OS X :: Way To Open A Binary File In A System

Dec 7, 2008

sent me a text document in binary format (the name of the document is "Viewdoc" -- no extension) which opens fine when I'm at work, on a Windows machine, but at home on my Mac it gets opened in Quicktime, but all it will show me is the very first page; I can't get it to scroll down past that. I tried opening it in Word but it just looks like gibberish.

IMac :: Cannot Open / Read WMV Files

Apr 6, 2009

I get these WMV files from time-to-time from a friend and I cannot open them. I took sometime and browsed around on the Web and found some great information plenty going on about how wonderful they are on PC"s but very little with regard to converting and or opening and playing these Windows based files in the OSX environment. Any suggestions on a viewer or converter that I can use with my iMAC, that runs transparent? And, that doesn't take an instrument rating to install and run.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Open File As Not Read-Only

Dec 8, 2014

Everytime I've opened an Excel  (Microsoft for Mac 2011) file today it opens as read-only, and the only way I can save changes is by changing the name of the file, which I don't want to do. I did not have this problem last week when working with the same file. I hit command-I  -- I'm listed as read & write and then it said Staff (it's just me -- read-only) -- I just switched it to read & write& did the same for Everyone. Yet it still opened (from the Finder) as Read-Only. P

OS X :: Key Hexadecimal / Binary Values Directly Into Memory Bytes?

Jul 3, 2008

A pc person was bashing mac and he was telling me that mac cannot "key hexadecimal or binary values directly into memory bytes". What exactly does this mean? I just finished my second year of college majoring in Computer Information Systems and I have never run across anything like this before. I am not quite sure what the term means and I was hoping somebody could give me some information on it, a google search did not turn up anything. For the record, he has no idea what it means either, he was just repeating something he had read on an anti-mac site.

PowerPC :: Intel Versus G5 With Universal Binary Applications

Nov 28, 2007

Do Universal Binary applications (Adobe Illustrator CS3) run quicker on Intel than on Power PC if the machines were similary spec'd maybe due to better architecture etc. E.g. a "G5 PPC 2.0Ghz" vs "iMac C2D 2.0ghz". I'm looking for real world application use rather than benchmarks. Wondering if it is better to go second user on a G5 or splash out on a new iMac/MacPro?

OS X :: SL Binary Versus Base 10 Disk Space Algorithm

Nov 17, 2009

So now that SL has been out for a while and 10.6.2 has been released, I'd like to revisit the the base 10 vs. binary issue and see people's opinion of this now. At first I didn't care, but as time went on and I started using various applications that provided information on hard drive space (omnidisksweeper, idisk, etc) I found it rather confusing and aggravating, so much so, I used that script file that was provided here. I also use other OSs that rightly use binary to computer free disk space and when mounting my HFS+ drives, the free space reported is different enough to bug me.

Software :: Transferring Data - Cannot Execute Binary File

All of my accounting for the past 10 years are in Quick Books 6.0. I have to transfer everything to Quick Books 2009. I backed Quick Books 6.0 onto a jump drive. I have upgraded my old computer with OS 9.2.2 to a imac with OS 10.5.6. When I attempt to transfer the data from my jump drive, I receive the following message:
Backup: cannot execute binary file
It also says under "kind": unix executable file
I called Intuit and they could not help, they said it was a Mac problem. I called Mac, they said it was an Intuit problem.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Files In Read Only?

Apr 3, 2012

I've just upgraded to a new Mac Mini which has OSX Lion, Version 10.7.3. I don't use the admin login for security reasons, I'm using a separate user login. When I want to modify a document (delete a document/folder or move a document into a folder) I have to type in the admin login every time. I've looked in the Get Info window of some, and the Sharing and Permissions all say Read Only.

Why are all my files Read Only? Is there a way to make everything in my login Read and Write without manually changing them all individually?

MacBook Pro :: How To Read .asl Files

May 16, 2012

I'm working on an iMac, OS 10.5.8. My log folder is full of asl files. I'm not a program-savvy person and need plain language. I've gotten as far as to put the many log files into a temp folder on my desktop. Now I see instructions to "read them at my leisure" but can't find out how to read these files to determine what's causing the rapid multiplication. How do I "read" these logs to determine where the problem lies?

I would like to be able to open up AFP on the Users folder (it is by default), but here comes my concern. Some of the users will have their sites hosted in their user Sites folders, including some PHP config files, potentially containing mysql login information, etc. Accessing the site through the web is no problem, as Apache w/ PHP will never show content of the PHP code, however AFP will!
