Software :: ILife Not Fully Compatible With PowerPC Macs?
Feb 4, 2009
Apple is slowly dropping PowerPC compatibility with its latest software releases as evidenced by a major new feature of iLife '09 that will function only on Intel-based Macs.
Ars Technica points out that GarageBand's Learn to Play, a new section within the music-making software that serves as a digital instructor for a user learning a new instrument, is not officially supported for Macs still running on PowerPC processors.
System requirements found on the Apple Store website say, in fine print, "GarageBand Learn to Play requires an Intel-based Mac with a dual-core processor or better."
When iLife '09 was first announced at last month's Macworld, the system requirements included "a Power PC G5 or 867 MHz or faster PowerPC G4" without mentioning any incompatible individual features.
Learn to Play also offers Artist Lessons from a Lesson Store built into GarageBand where artists teach fans how to play their hit songs on certain instruments for $4.99 each lesson.
Chief executive Steve Jobs confirmed the switch from PowerPC to Intel in June 2005, targeting the end of 2007 for the transition to be completed.
Mac OS X Leopard excluded slower PowerPC-based Macs with a cutoff set at 800 MHz G4 or faster.
Official documentation from Apple gives clues that PowerPC Macs very well may be left out completely when Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is released sometime during the first half of this year. Developer copies distributed at WWDC last year included a requirements PDF that listed "an Intel processor" as the minimum necessary to run the software.
Adding further weight to that possibility, people familiar with the ongoing development of Leopard have previously told AppleInsider that Snow Leopard would in all likelihood exclude support for PowerPC processors.[ View this article at [URL] ]

I'm about to throw my HP Colorsmart C6180 out the window. The problems are mostly with the HP software, and my inability to get it to work with OSX 10.5.6 on my Mac Pro. Does anyone want to suggest a replacement that has all in one capabilities and actually is compatible with my computer?

I have a Epson Stylus C45 printer USB and It is not fully compatible with Mac OS X 4.4 specially ref. printing preferences, so I have searched over the internet and found a driver. I am able to choose only Standard, for example. Is there any other driver better than CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc1?

They are going to make something from ground up. Guess what that means? Apple iOS and Mac OS will be combined into one OS. So, it will most likely require new hardware. Are all of mac buyers going to be screwed in a year from now on? I doubt it will be 100% compatible

Guys, do you think the new iMacs/mac Minis/macbooks will be backwards compatible with 10.5 Leopard or only Snow Leopard compatible..... since they will undoubtedly ship with Snow Leopard 10.6 only?

G4 won't fully boot, we turned it off for the day, came in the next morning hit the power button and waited while it booted. It got held up at internet services, we unplugged it from the network restarted. It would boot all the way up so you could see the desktop wallpaper but then the black "you need to restart" screen would pop up.

I switched when the Mac Mini came out, so seeing this iBook from 2001 is pretty interesting.
Anyways, he's having problems with the LCD that when he opens it all the way the LCD turns off. Any ideas for DIY fix? He also wants to know if he can add Wi-Fi?

So I already placed my order for my new iMAC. I have a MacBook (2006) with iLife 08.
My question is: When I get to transfer my MacBook info into my new iMAC, will i encounter any problems with my iLife files being that I have iLife 08, and the new iMac's come with iLife 09? The Time Machine transfer won't bring the new iMac software back to 08 will it?
Just want to be sure before I set this up.

They threw away some 512MB memory sticks today (off old useless machines they're pulling apart for computer classes) and I'm wondering which Macs can use them? I'm aware that they won't work on anything past G4s and not G3s, but which models?

I am considering purhcasing iLife 09 to upgrade from iLife 08 that came pre-installed on my early-2008 MacBook Pro, as I like the new iPhoto features, (the iLife app I use most frequently out of the entire bundle), but I was wondering if by doing so there is a chance I may lose any files.
For those that did the same 08 to 09 upgrade, did you lose an individual photos from your library, albums altogether, events, slideshows, etc.?
For those that didn't lose them directly in iLife/iPhoto, what about on the HDD itself, and vice versa?

I'm basically in the same boat as this person in that I need to upgrade from OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5. In my case, I need to upgrade a Mac-mini and two iMacs.
I'm scouring the web for legal copies of OS X 10.5 I can purchase and I've been finding upgrade DVDs being sold in addition to full install DVDs. Both sets of DVDs are official Apple DVDs.
My question: could I use an 10.5 upgrade DVD to do the upgrade or must I use a 10.5 full install DVD? I do realize there is a difference between a 10.5 update DVD vs an upgrade DVD and I'm asking about a 10.5 upgrade DVD..

long time reader, first time poster. I know this topic has been beaten to death - but I've read all the post and have not found an answer for my question.
If you have iLife 08 installed and just installed a new copy of iLife 09 - does the following happen?
1. iLife 08 gets removed.
2. All Data from iPhoto 08, iMovie 08, iDVD etc, gets transferred to the new application.
3. No Importing is required to move any of the data over the new version of the software. It just works as if you didn't even have iLife 08 in the first place.

Documentation included with copies of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard distributed during Apple's developer conference this week confirm that the next-generation operating system does not presently support Macs with PowerPC processors. LogicielMac.com has published a screen capture of the PDF-based requirements document included on the Snow Leopard disc that provides a rundown of the system's requirements.
The documentation states that in order to install Snow Leopard, developers must have a Mac computer with "an Intel processor" and at least 512MB of RAM, though additional memory is recommended for development purposes. The findings confirm an AppleInsider report from last September, which cited people familiar with the ongoing development of Leopard as saying that Mac OS X 10.6 would in all likelihood exclude support for PowerPC processors. According to the Snow Leopard documentation, the new system will also require an Apple-supplied video card, 9GB of hard disk space, and either an internal, external or shared DVD drive. I'm looking to use a webcam for my Powerbook G4. I have an EyeToy usb camera but I can't seem to get that to work for any of my programs such as iMovie 09 and other iLife applications. I either want to know where I can get a camera that will work with this computer (That isn't very expensive) or how I can get my eye toy to work with everything.

I've been given a PowerBook G3. I'm not sure which version it is or anything. But its a PowerBook G3 because it says on the screen. How do I find out exactly what machine I've been given and what wireless card to have a look for. I wouldn't mind spending a couple of quid on ebay for an old second hand airport card just for fun really. Its got os9 on atm. I've got an old osx10.1 disk somewhere I might try and update it a little.

I have two Macs right now - an iBook and a new MacBook. I bought two Kingston 1GB RAM slots and put them in my MacBook and they're working great. Now I have two 512MB RAM slots that I'm not using.
My iBook has one free slot, so my question is this: can the RAM I took from the MacBook work in the iBook? I don't have the iBook around for the time being (it's at a friend's place), so I can't check it myself.
I'm going to sell the iBook, so I thought it would be nice if it had some more memory.

I was just using my laptop, and I got up for a few minutes, and then heard a weird crunch. I came back to see a quarter-size black spot with at least 3 cracks in it. There are also vertical lines, and a white section at the bottom. Is this a normal thing, or is my iBook trying to kill me or something? Also, I bought a G3 ibook a few days ago, but it hasn't came in yet. Does anyone know if its lcd will be compatible? Right now, I just hope the G3 ibook comes tomorrow because I am going on vacation and have a science project to work on. Also, if the G3 lcd won't work, then what will? [URL]...
