Software :: IBook Not Mounting A Networked Volume?

Jul 21, 2009

I have a G4 macMini running 10.5 and an iBook G4 running 10.4, both are connected through the same router. I'm trying to use the mini as a file server so I'd like to mount the mini and USB external drive attached to the mini when the iBook starts up. Using Finder->connect to server I can access and mount both drives without any problems. I've then dragged the drives into the login items for the account on the iBook I want them mounted on. When I load the iBook I get the 'server not responding or is not operational, check the IP address.'? It will mount then through finder->connect to server straight afterwards though?

Applications :: TrueCrypt - Mounting And Writing To A Hidden Volume In Leopard

May 13, 2009

I realize the answer to this question may be pretty obvious to some, but I've read the TrueCrypt user manual, and I've searched these forums, TrueCrypt's forums, and google for the answer to my question but I still can't figure this out...

I've created an encrypted file container with a hidden volume using the setup wizard. After completing the wizard, I can't figure out how to properly write data to the hidden volume.

PowerPC :: Pump Up The Volume On IBook?

Aug 8, 2006

I love my iBook, however, the low audio volume leaves me holding my iBook to my face to hear the audio (or using headphones). I have maxed the normal volume and the sound output volume under system preferences. I also increased the volume through the quicktime controls when I was watching the keynote last night. It wasn't loud enough to enjoy from more than 1 or 2 ft away.

Question: Is there anyway to increase the volume on my iBook other that the ways mentioned above? (I know the iBooks speakers are lousy and the sound depends on the source.)

I am not trying to rock out. I just want to hear Steve. . . . without having to buy external speakers.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 - Volume And Brightness Stopped Working?

Aug 13, 2009

Up until recently, F1 - F5 have been Brightness and Volume controls, as they have been since I got the thing. I go to use the Volume, and it doesn't work. I then try the Brightness, and it doesn't work. F6 - F12 all work just fine, which leads me to believe that iBook had a brain fart.

My volume balance has always altered itself. Balancing itself out of one speaker left or right as it so chooses. I know it's smart, but now it's just screwing with me. Settings go and change on their own, dock icons have switched, but this one has stumped me. How do I get those hardware function keys back to doing what they're there to do?

Also, I tried it with an App called Rowmote, that lets you control your Mac from your iPhone, with Apple Remote-like control, and the volume won't change using that either. Another symptom is that sometimes it makes clicking sounds, as if it were changing slowly and glitchy (which it did click sometimes anyhow) when using the Volume slider in the menu bar.

No, the options in System Preferences is not checked to use them as FN. Any ideas?

PowerPC :: Sound Volume Becomes Uneven - IBook Internal Speaker

Feb 22, 2008

I have a small issue on my iBook (G4) that's been driving me a bit crazy lately. I noticed a few months ago that when I selected a song/video on iTunes to play, I would get uneven volume output on my two internal speakers. I tried restarting iTunes, restarting the computer, etc. to no avail. In addition, sometimes this problem would not arise for a few days, and then suddenly start up again.

I then dug up the program Audio MIDI Setup and saw that the sliders were uneven . Once I slid them back together, I thought I had solved my problem. Nope! It came back, and I even saw that if I opened up Audio MIDI Setup right after the computer turned on, the sliders would be skewed even before opening iTunes or Safari or some other program that used audio.

I've come accustomed to manually balancing the volume output, but the irregularity of this problem occurring frustrates me. Attached is a screenshot of Audio MIDI Setup with the issue--note the Audio Output sliders.

PowerPC :: Ibook Not Working Fine / Unable To Find Boot Volume And Freezes Sometime

May 23, 2009

OS X :: One WD 2Tb External HD Networked With Two OS?

Mar 26, 2010

I just bought a Belkin WIFI router that has a network storage USB port on it. I just bought a WD 2Tb mybook external drive and hooked it in to the back of the router and installed the necessary software on my Dell laptop (XP) as well as the MBP running Leopard. I'm assuming I need to partition the drive using disk utilities because the Mac needs it to be formatted especially for it and XP needs to see a FAT file system. I guess I'm wondering if I can do it and what pitfalls I should expect. Does anyone have a step-by-step for this kind of setup? Do I need to format the Windoz partition with the Windoz 'puter? Just to be clear, I intend to use the drive for backing up both computers and for general storage of each of the two computers. Should I create four partitions? Is it possible to partition a partition after formatting the other partition to FAT32 or whatever?

OS X :: Networked Non Postscript HP 4V On Leopard

Nov 10, 2008

I have an older non postscript HP 4V on a Jet Direct, ethernet connection with a static ip address. It works fine with my Toshiba running windows xp. It ran on my wife's ibook and her MacBook, prior to a recent hard drive failure. Now I can't get it configured properly on my new MacBook or my wife's repaired one. I can ping it and a file sent to it spits out pages of garbage. I've tried using the "Generic Postscript" driver, the 4V postscript driver and the Gutenprint driver. All combinations using JetDirect Socket, IPP and LPD. If it hadn't worked on OS X previously I would suspect that it won't work, but I know it does.

Or if its possible a folder that links direct to an external HDD? The admin mac is running 10.6.2.

Applications :: Control ITunes Volume (not System Volume) From Apple Aluminum Keyboard?

Oct 20, 2009

I have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).

OS X :: Volume Opens The Window For Expose And Does Not Control Volume Monitor Brightness?

Mar 9, 2010

Recently, my newer (last year) iMac probably running 10.5 started speaking and wont shut up... there is no obvious way to turn it off. I usually figure problems out myself but there are no system preferences that effect it. I even changed the voice in preferences as a test and it is still the same guy reading everything clicked in all applications except when I am in system preferences so far. Usually when I run into a dead end like this there is some mystery key command that works... anyone know?I also noticed that some of the top line (f) keys are not doing what they are supposed to any longer as well... volume up opens the window for expose & spaces it looks like and does not control the volume monitor brightness controls are not working either... I went to the key and mouse preferences and set the key strokes to default and still the same.

OS X :: Windows D Drive Not Shown On Networked PC

Mar 2, 2009

I have a (newly) mixed network - Mac OS X 10.3 and Win XP Pro. I have two internal hard drives in each machine. After downloading SharePoint I was able to see the second Mac HD from the XP machine. I can't for the life of me find any reference to accessing the D: drive on the XP machine from the Mac box. It seems to me that using "Finder->Go->"connect to server" forces you to log on as a user and then only gives you access to user level and below. In other words you can't get to "My Computer" to access other drives. Links don't appear to work so I can't set a shortcut (tried the "nethood" folder under the user account but they are only links and didn't get me anywhere). I have all sharing turned on. Can access the user folder no problem. Just can't get to upper level resources.

Mac Pro :: Can't Print To Ethernet Networked Printer

Feb 6, 2012

Today, for some reason I can't print to our networked printer, a Kyocera FS-6950DN laser. All I am getting now is a 'Network host is busy, will retry in 10/15 secs' and the job just holds.

So, what have I tried. To eleminate any printer issues I have successful managed to print direct from my MacBook (also running OSX 10.6.8) without a problem. So the printer seems fine. However, if a connect directly (again via a single ethernet cable) to my MacPro it won't print. I have deleted the printer and created a new one. Actually, I have done this several times. When I go to create a new printer I can see the printer listed a a bonjour printer. I select it, then I use 'generic postcript'.  I can choose the my printer here, but I seem to remember that this was a problem when I set it up originally and I was advised to use the generic option. I click add and that used to work. But not now. I have checked that the printer has a static ip address and it does. I have also tried adding the printer as an IP printer and adding the IP address etc maually, but again this doesn't work. I've tried this both with LPD set or IPP set. I get the same busy error message.

Trawling the net I have noticed lots of people with Kyocera print issues relating to the latest OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 update. Although having succesfully printed from my MacBook that would suggest that 10.6.8 isn't the issue in my case.

I should also say that I have done the usual... repaired the permissions and reset the PRAM etc. I have ping tested the connection from my MacPro and there is a response from the printer. It's just not finding the printer when I send the job to print?

OS X Mavericks :: Spotlight Search On Networked Mac?

Jun 30, 2014

Does Mavericks Mac's use the 'spotlight index' of this shared, networked, Snow Leopard Mac, or when we search it, it's just searching the actual file structure?

I'm having issues with searching this networked Mac (some files not being found and then a on later search they appear), and I don't know whether a rebuilding of the spotlight index on the networked Mac is a relevant troubleshooting step.

OS X :: New HD Not Showing Up In Disk Utility - This Volume Is The Startup Volume And Cannot Be Erased

Aug 10, 2009

I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :

"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"

So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.

OS X Mavericks :: Restore Volume Of Third Partition To Macintosh HD Volume

Aug 23, 2014

I recently decided to increase the volume of my bootcamp disk, which I had done in the past using a method which ultimately made the disk unrecognizable. This time around I used Winclone to create an image of my bootcamp disk. I was not sure exactly how Winclone worked and to be safe I decided to keep the Bootcamp disk I had, and I created a third partition of a larger volume to which I restored the bootcamp image. Everything worked fine obviously, and the image was restored correctly to the new larger volume. The dilemma is I had two bootcamp disks, so I erased the smaller volume because I no longer needed it. Currently I am trying to restore this empty space within the main disk to the Macintosh HD. Disk util looks like:

I know I can just create a backup of the macintosh HD, another image of the bootcamp disk, and format the disk and start over, but I am hoping there is an easier way to go about this; considering there has been a method engineered such that I can just drag that corner of the mac HD and voila I have instantly more storage after applying, it seems viable that there is something that can be done rather than formatting my disk, unless the necessity for that of course was overlooked.

OS X :: Locking Folders On A Networked Hard Drive?

May 22, 2010

The HD is formatted in NTFS as a legacy of originally being mostly used with the PC (and the router will only read NTFS.) I've installed NTFS-3G to be able to read and write to the drive from the Macs. Everything works dandy.

My question: I'd like to be able to restrict access to one of the folders on the HD somehow; either to just one of the Macs, or via password. I have no clue where to start with this.

MacBook Air :: Backup Multiple To A Networked Drive?

Feb 23, 2012

I will now have four MacBook Airs in my house (me, my wife, two kids) and would like to setup a SIMPLE way to back up all of them to a networked drive that I could connect to my Airport Extreme. Having read the horror stories about the Time Machine, I'm looking for a different solution if it's out there. Since both my kids and my wife are not too tech savy when it comes to this, I'd like something as simple as a networked drive where I can direct Time Machine to perform it's backups from each of their computers.

Is there a good solution that's close to plug and play to do this? I've looked at some different NAS drives online, but each seem to have different quirks to their setup.

OS X :: Networked Hard Drive Is Slow Working Live From It?

Mar 29, 2010

i have a small mac office with a PPC G5 and an intel G5 as my two main boxes. I currently work from a very slow raid network box - no screen, just a networked hard drive really. problem is that it is really slow working live form it. Everything is fine when I copy files to my machine first then work on it.

I can't do this as I'm in the graphics field, and all my links, pics, blah blah are on the server - linking to things like InDesign etc.i need to upgrade in here and add a new machine, but not sure on which way in terms of software for my old G5.The PPC G5 is to become my server (its got to be better than my current network server). As per software tho, because its a non-intel G5, i read that i cannot upgrade to latest software. I'm currently running 10.4.11.

Do I, or, Should I, or for what reasons - would I upgrade to a 'server' software, rather than leave it as its current tiger 10.4.11 software (non software)basically, are there major security, network, etc features of the server OSX over non-server OSX?
