OS X :: Unable To Work With Networked Optical Drive

Dec 23, 2009

I have created a image of my macbook pro (2006), on a DL-R disk. (This was so that I can restore my mac without having to do any updates or having to download and install programs) However, the person who made the image for me is no longer available and as such I have no way to use the DL-R disk. Apparently the macbook pro 2006 cannot read DL-R disks. I know that apple has a networked optical drive feature for the macbook Air. Would I be able to use this feature on my macbook pro?

Hardware :: Unable To Work With Optical Drive / Can't Pick Cd

Dec 17, 2007

When ripping CD's with my new iMac 20", occasionally a CD will start to initialize then it will disappear from the desktop. I can eject the CD using Disk Utility or even using the hard-button on the Mac keyboard but other than that it is as though the CD is not there. Then, when I put the CD back in again all is well and it comes right up. I have never had this problem with the same CD twice in a row.

Also the drive seems really picky - iTunes will hang when trying to rip a CD that is at all "well used" (OK I don't take care of my CD's as well as I should but they work fine in my Windows machines).

Hardware :: Won't Work With Optical Drive Or Hard Drive Failure

Mar 12, 2010

We have i-Mac 20" with built in i-sight Power PC, one of last ones I think before the intel. We have had a few problems before with it powering down and going to sleep. Used to hoover dust out and that seemed to fix it.

Now it won't start at all. I have tried all the PRAM and various commands to re set various things but none of these work. We had a wireless keyboard and I have just tried a wired one but I do not think either are connecting as the tab key light does not come on, which it does when I tested the wired on on my lap top.

When it died it crashed with a cd in drive. I have removed this and replaced it with the mac install disk to try and run the disk check but the optical drive is not starting at all either.

All that happens on start up is the sleep light comes on, then after a few moments fan starts to whirl. I can't hear the hard drive - have tried to rock hard drive to get it to spin but nothing.

Just wondering whether worth trying to replace optical drive or is this being controlled by hard drive - hence its not working nor hard drive. is there any way to recover data if it is the hard drive that is dead? anything else I can try and replace to fix it? could I use an external optical drive connected via USB to start?
I have tried to firewire but not joy their either!

Mac Pro :: Optical Drive Won't Work Only For Some DVDs

Dec 14, 2010

Ok so i have an early 2008 Mac Pro, that has been reformatted couple days ago. So when i install my softwares again and i realized some of the DVDs can't be read anymore, the drive just makes a certain sound every 5 secs or so and eventually it just ejects by itself. Now the weird part and the thing i just don't get is why it's only like that for certain DVDs.

For example, i was installing Ableton Suite 8 again, and there are 4 discs. For some reason disc 2-4 work but the Disc 1 doesn't read at all. And i know it's not a problem with the DVDs cause they work on my macbook pro and even my PC. And i tried to burn a copy of that disc 1 into a blank DVD and tried to run that to install and it worked, so it can't be any data issues or whatever with the DVD.

Is this a firmware issue? if so how do i fix this? I thought at first it could just be because i reformatted my mac recently and then this all happened. But i've reformatted my mac several times before and never had this problem. Or this is optical drive just laming out and its time to buy a new one?

But then again why does it work for some DVDs and not for others? It's just BUGGING me ALL DAY.

oh and the drive model is:

Sony NEC optiarc AD-7170A

Mac Pro :: Won't Work With Second Optical Drive / Can't Eject

Dec 27, 2006

Are there any specifics I should know about the second drive bay? I'm planning on buying just a really fast CD-ROM drive to put in there - can I get any ole' one? I noticed that the Apple drive does not have a faceplate - does this mean I have to remove the faceplate from whatever drive I get? Are there drives available that already have no faceplate?

I never used Mac OS X with more than one optical drive - how does opening a drive work? Does the eject button open both drives? One at a time?

MacBook Air :: Won't Work / With Or Without Optical Drive

Mar 16, 2009

My next Mac will be a laptop, and I will NEVER need the Macbook pro's power. I just web-surf and listen to music mostly. I only use the optical drive to watch dvds. But I have a separate player for my much larger TV now. So for say 99 percent of the time, an optical drive would be unnecessary. But I would buy apple's separate optical drive; which I think is a good idea. On my present computer, a first generation Mac Mini, the DVD drive is obviously obsolete now, especially when it comes to Blu-Ray. But what if a like in 2 years a new optical format comes out, or at least a much faster version? If I had a Macbook I would be stuck, never being able to upgrade the internal drive. If the Macbook's optical drive was easily upgradable, then this would be a no brainer.

Aug 10, 2010

I have a 3 year old 24" iMac (see sig). I recently discovered the optical drive is not working any more. It won't accept any discs and just spits them out. Two questions:

-I assume the drive can be replaced somewhere like the Apple Store. Does anyone know about how much that would cost?

-Are there any alternatives to replacing the internal drive, like buying an external desktop optical drive? If so, what's a good one to get?

Intel Mac :: Internal Optical Drive For (late 2006) Won't Work

May 19, 2012

The internal optical drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846) for my Intel iMac (late 2006) stop working after listening to a music CD. I inserted another music CD and the drive will try to read the CD, but after awhile, it would eject the CD. I inserted the last music CD I listened to and it did the same thing. Then I inserted several other data cds into the drive resulting in the same problem.

Mac Mini :: (Fall 2010) Optical DVD Drive Doesn't Work?

May 26, 2012

I purchased this spring of 2011 and only used the drive to install the software. I had lots of other problems with kernel issues and was in and out of the Genius Store like a hen on an egg, but now I am trying to use the DVD drive and it doesn't work. It doesn't recognize any applications to open it, not Toast, not Disk Utility, and it has a hard time recognizing music CDs also. Not only does it not recognize it on the desktop, it simply spits the disk out. I purchased new DVD-RW and tried to write an .iso image to the DVD, and it won't work. Sad fact is that this is now past the warranty and I am stuck with this. The Mac Mini 2010 version was expensive, and the only reason I bought it was because of the drive because I didn't have one.

MacBook :: Unable To Recognize Newly Installed Optical Drive

Jun 24, 2009

So, I have a 13" white MacBook that is about three years old. Recently, the Combo Drive stopped reading CD-Rs (possibly all discs in general, but I only ever use it to burn CDs, so I wouldn't have ever known), so I decided to try to install a new Super Drive myself.

Following a guide on [URL], I installed the new drive, but when I turned my computer back on, it was not recognizing the drive at all. System Profiler was saying "This system does not contain any ATA devices. If you have any ATA devices installed, check that they are connected and powered on." I was then able to reinstall my old Combo Drive, which my computer recognized immediately. Thinking that I may have just not connected something tightly the first time, I tried a second time. Same thing happened.

So, my question is, is there anything I may be missing or does this definitely mean the drive is defective? I just want to make sure I'm not sending back a functional drive before I go ahead and do so.

OS X :: Windows D Drive Not Shown On Networked PC

Mar 2, 2009

I have a (newly) mixed network - Mac OS X 10.3 and Win XP Pro. I have two internal hard drives in each machine. After downloading SharePoint I was able to see the second Mac HD from the XP machine. I can't for the life of me find any reference to accessing the D: drive on the XP machine from the Mac box. It seems to me that using "Finder->Go->"connect to server" forces you to log on as a user and then only gives you access to user level and below. In other words you can't get to "My Computer" to access other drives. Links don't appear to work so I can't set a shortcut (tried the "nethood" folder under the user account but they are only links and didn't get me anywhere). I have all sharing turned on. Can access the user folder no problem. Just can't get to upper level resources.

OS X :: Locking Folders On A Networked Hard Drive?

May 22, 2010

Here's my setup: I have three Macs and one PC sharing a wireless network with a Belkin N+ router and a 2 TB external HD shared via the router. The HD is formatted in NTFS as a legacy of originally being mostly used with the PC (and the router will only read NTFS.) I've installed NTFS-3G to be able to read and write to the drive from the Macs. Everything works dandy.

My question: I'd like to be able to restrict access to one of the folders on the HD somehow; either to just one of the Macs, or via password. I have no clue where to start with this.

MacBook Air :: Backup Multiple To A Networked Drive?

Feb 23, 2012

I will now have four MacBook Airs in my house (me, my wife, two kids) and would like to setup a SIMPLE way to back up all of them to a networked drive that I could connect to my Airport Extreme. Having read the horror stories about the Time Machine, I'm looking for a different solution if it's out there. Since both my kids and my wife are not too tech savy when it comes to this, I'd like something as simple as a networked drive where I can direct Time Machine to perform it's backups from each of their computers.

Is there a good solution that's close to plug and play to do this? I've looked at some different NAS drives online, but each seem to have different quirks to their setup.

OS X :: Networked Hard Drive Is Slow Working Live From It?

Mar 29, 2010

i have a small mac office with a PPC G5 and an intel G5 as my two main boxes. I currently work from a very slow raid network box - no screen, just a networked hard drive really. problem is that it is really slow working live form it. Everything is fine when I copy files to my machine first then work on it.

I can't do this as I'm in the graphics field, and all my links, pics, blah blah are on the server - linking to things like InDesign etc.i need to upgrade in here and add a new machine, but not sure on which way in terms of software for my old G5.The PPC G5 is to become my server (its got to be better than my current network server). As per software tho, because its a non-intel G5, i read that i cannot upgrade to latest software. I'm currently running 10.4.11.

Do I, or, Should I, or for what reasons - would I upgrade to a 'server' software, rather than leave it as its current tiger 10.4.11 software (non software)basically, are there major security, network, etc features of the server OSX over non-server OSX?

MacBook Air :: How To Backup IPad And IPhone To Networked Drive

May 12, 2012

Since it's clear now that my Win 7 machine will never again run iTunes properly. I'm reduced to using my MBA for all my iTunes needs. My music collection is huge, of course (whose isn't?) but that's no problem because it exists on a networked drive and my MBA has no issues playing from it. However, both my iPhone and iPad are 64GB and I need to back them up.

I can't use the Cloud, of course, because it's not big enough (it's not just music or I'd subscribe to the music service on my iPad it's mostly other data which takes up 50GB or more). I can't back them up to my SSD because there's not enough room. So I really want them to backup to the same networked drive I'm using for my music. Except I don't see a way to do that in iTunes.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Can't Find Drive Connected To Other Networked Mac

Feb 5, 2012

I have a Drobo external drive array connected by firewire to my primary home computer - a Mac Pro. the last year I've backed up two Macbook Pros (mine and my wife's) to this Drobo using Time Machine (The Mac Pro is always on and the laptops backup through the home network, through the Map Pro, to the Drobo). I recently did a fresh reinstall of Lion to all 3 computers.  Now for some reason Time Machine can't kick the backup off.  It gives me a "Can't backup - the backup drive us not available," or something like that.

A couple of key points:

* Through the primary computer, I have opened read/write file sharing permissions for all drives, including the FW connected Drobo

* From the laptops, I can see and read/write to the Drobo through Finder

* Through Time Machine preferences, I can select the Drobo as a backup destination -  it's only when I kick off the backup that I run into the error.

* If I create a test admin account to try, I get the same problem when trying to back up.

* As a safegard, I have run a manual backup successfully to a separate external drive (mobile g-drive)
