Intel Mac :: Connection Failed To Networked Drive
Mar 28, 2012
I've been having a connection issue for a while where some days I can connect to our networked drive just fine and some days it fails and gives me the connection failed window. The shared drive is hard connected to an imac and I connect to it via the shared items or apple + k with the ip address. When the connection fails they both stop working.

My company uses a network drive attached to our router. I can connect to the drive fine, but only after a fresh reboot. If I turn on off the MBP or hibernate it, when it boots back up it tells me it can't find the network drive. Trying to reconnect to the network or turning airport on and off doesn't work. I have a mac mini that i never shut off that never loses connection, only the laptops.

why I get this message when trying to burn photos on to high quality discs."The burn to the SuperDrive drive failed. The disc drive didn’t respond properly and can’t recover or retry." I have just managed to burn some others photos perfectly fine.

I have an iMac made in mid 2007. It is an Intel Duo Core processor. The hard drive has failed. Apple says I can use an external drive to run it. I have a installation disk for Snow Leopard. How can I install Snow Leopard onto the external disk given that the computer is unusable?

What happens when 3 people try to access different partitions at the same time on my 2 TB drive that is connected to the Airport Extreme? I'm assuming with only 1 arm something would get messed up. Example: watching Iron Man 2 from the hard drive with apple TV and then my wife starts going through photos on her MBP, then my iMac starts doing its time machine business.

I have a (newly) mixed network - Mac OS X 10.3 and Win XP Pro. I have two internal hard drives in each machine. After downloading SharePoint I was able to see the second Mac HD from the XP machine. I can't for the life of me find any reference to accessing the D: drive on the XP machine from the Mac box. It seems to me that using "Finder->Go->"connect to server" forces you to log on as a user and then only gives you access to user level and below. In other words you can't get to "My Computer" to access other drives. Links don't appear to work so I can't set a shortcut (tried the "nethood" folder under the user account but they are only links and didn't get me anywhere). I have all sharing turned on. Can access the user folder no problem. Just can't get to upper level resources.

I recently received an iMac as a "gift"... turns out it has some problems. I am unable to reinstall the default OS (Mountain Lion) because I have yet to be able to partition the HDD correctly. The error I keep getting is:Â Partition failed with the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed. At this point, the default Macintosh HD isn't showing, so it must of been erased/deleted.Â

I have created a image of my macbook pro (2006), on a DL-R disk. (This was so that I can restore my mac without having to do any updates or having to download and install programs) However, the person who made the image for me is no longer available and as such I have no way to use the DL-R disk. Apparently the macbook pro 2006 cannot read DL-R disks. I know that apple has a networked optical drive feature for the macbook Air. Would I be able to use this feature on my macbook pro?

Here's my setup: I have three Macs and one PC sharing a wireless network with a Belkin N+ router and a 2 TB external HD shared via the router. The HD is formatted in NTFS as a legacy of originally being mostly used with the PC (and the router will only read NTFS.) I've installed NTFS-3G to be able to read and write to the drive from the Macs. Everything works dandy.
My question: I'd like to be able to restrict access to one of the folders on the HD somehow; either to just one of the Macs, or via password. I have no clue where to start with this.

I will now have four MacBook Airs in my house (me, my wife, two kids) and would like to setup a SIMPLE way to back up all of them to a networked drive that I could connect to my Airport Extreme. Having read the horror stories about the Time Machine, I'm looking for a different solution if it's out there. Since both my kids and my wife are not too tech savy when it comes to this, I'd like something as simple as a networked drive where I can direct Time Machine to perform it's backups from each of their computers. Â
Is there a good solution that's close to plug and play to do this? I've looked at some different NAS drives online, but each seem to have different quirks to their setup.

i have a small mac office with a PPC G5 and an intel G5 as my two main boxes. I currently work from a very slow raid network box - no screen, just a networked hard drive really. problem is that it is really slow working live form it. Everything is fine when I copy files to my machine first then work on it.
I can't do this as I'm in the graphics field, and all my links, pics, blah blah are on the server - linking to things like InDesign etc.i need to upgrade in here and add a new machine, but not sure on which way in terms of software for my old G5.The PPC G5 is to become my server (its got to be better than my current network server). As per software tho, because its a non-intel G5, i read that i cannot upgrade to latest software. I'm currently running 10.4.11.
Do I, or, Should I, or for what reasons - would I upgrade to a 'server' software, rather than leave it as its current tiger 10.4.11 software (non software)basically, are there major security, network, etc features of the server OSX over non-server OSX?

Since it's clear now that my Win 7 machine will never again run iTunes properly. I'm reduced to using my MBA for all my iTunes needs. My music collection is huge, of course (whose isn't?) but that's no problem because it exists on a networked drive and my MBA has no issues playing from it. However, both my iPhone and iPad are 64GB and I need to back them up.
I can't use the Cloud, of course, because it's not big enough (it's not just music or I'd subscribe to the music service on my iPad it's mostly other data which takes up 50GB or more). I can't back them up to my SSD because there's not enough room. So I really want them to backup to the same networked drive I'm using for my music. Except I don't see a way to do that in iTunes.

I've recently set up a new home network. I keep getting the following error, which is my computer trying to connect to an IP address from my former network (an external hard drive that was set up as a shared server): Connection failed
The server "192.168.1.66" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again. The only button option is "OK." The error pops up repeatedly. The external drive does not appear in my list of shared servers. Since this IP address is no longer valid and never will be again, how can I make this error go away?

I'm working on a friend's MPB and when ever I try to connect to it from mine (I created the network from my MPB which is almost identical to his), His MPB shows up in finder, but it always says "Connecting..." and then "Connection Failed". Sharing is enabled on his MPB and the firewall is disabled. I have been through everything that I can think of to try and fix this, short of re-installing Leopard. His MBP came with Leopard pre-installed, so there is no need to worry about the upgrade messing things up. I have checked from a MacBook and that one cannot connect either, but both connect to mine with no problems.

I have a Drobo external drive array connected by firewire to my primary home computer - a Mac Pro. the last year I've backed up two Macbook Pros (mine and my wife's) to this Drobo using Time Machine (The Mac Pro is always on and the laptops backup through the home network, through the Map Pro, to the Drobo). I recently did a fresh reinstall of Lion to all 3 computers. Now for some reason Time Machine can't kick the backup off. It gives me a "Can't backup - the backup drive us not available," or something like that.
A couple of key points:
* Through the primary computer, I have opened read/write file sharing permissions for all drives, including the FW connected Drobo
* From the laptops, I can see and read/write to the Drobo through Finder
* Through Time Machine preferences, I can select the Drobo as a backup destination - it's only when I kick off the backup that I run into the error.
* If I create a test admin account to try, I get the same problem when trying to back up.
* As a safegard, I have run a manual backup successfully to a separate external drive (mobile g-drive)

Lately, my MacBook's been popping-up window after boot that says, "Connection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time." I don't know what server my Mac is trying to connect to. How/where can I look to see what's trying to connect, and to shut it off from trying at boot?

I have been using both messenger 7.0.2 and the beta version of 8 for some time. I have recently upgraded both to Snow Leopard, and changed my ISP to TPG (Australian ISP). Ever since, when I attempt to connect to messenger (either version) it says the connection failed as I am not connected to the internet. My internet works fine so I am at a loss as to what the problem is.

We recently installed a mac pro running serverX 10.5.6.(2x3.2 Quad Core Intel Xeon, 16GB 800 MHZ.) I was able to connect to the server from my imac (leopard) and use ARD (V3.2.2) with no problems. Now, since I had shutdown the server for about a week I started it up the other day I am now unable to access it thru our network. On my IMac I try to access using ARD the server lists: "Access Denied". Using GO-Connect to Server I get the message "Connection Failed The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP and your network connection and try again."
I can ping the IP address from my imac. The server is able to access the internet, so I know it's not my network. I have used Disk Utility (on the server) and reset the permissions. After hours on Apple's site and googling I am at a loss. I'm thinking it has something to do with access permissions or something got tweaked at startup (no startup progs in Accts login window) after I turned the unit off for over a week.

I have a desktop Mac that I used Migration Assistant to transfer my user setting etc. prior to selling my MacBook. All works well, except that everytime I try to print a document it pauses while looking for a shared network volume for a while before coming back saying "Connection Failed to MacBook". I deleted all printers and resent printers from preferences to add them back manually and repaired permissions however the problem is still happening everytime I try to print a document. Its as though its looking for the old MacBook.

My family owns 2 MacBooks plus XP desk top and Vista laptop. Wireless setup is provided with an older linksys a/b/g router and Comcast Cable Modem. The 2 MacBooks have frequent problems printing to the Brother 5250 DN printer, with connect fails. I have to reset the IP addresss frequently to get the printers to work with the wireless side of the network. The Windows OS PC's don't experience this problem. I am at a loss as to why the Macs have this IP problems.

In the last week I have been getting a persistent warning on my desktop: "Connection Failed. This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally." Sometimes there will be 5 or 6 of these warnings to be cleared from the desktop. All my drives are mounted correctly (2 internal 1 external USB drive) and there are no other file servers set up on my network. My machine is 400MHz PowerPC G4 700 MB SDRam running 10.4.11.

I have five Macs in the house, all of which can see each other on the local wireless network...but...for some weird reason, none but when they try to connect, I get Connection Failed after several minutes of silence.
When I click Connect As... in hopes of getting a login screen, nothing happens at all. Nada. Zilch. Zip.
The sharing settings on the MacBook are identical to the ones on the other five. Of course, the MacBook can connect the other direction to everyone, including my brand spankin new MBP.
Any clues, oh wise ones? Im stumped. What is it about getting into a simple MacBook that has two G4s and two MBPs scratching their heads?
