Software :: G5 Not Recognizing DVDs

Mar 2, 2009

I have a G5 PowerMac. Recently, it stopped reading DVDs. CDs mount and burn okay. I've tried data DVDs that work fine on other Macs and commercial movies. Without fail, I get the "not recognizable" message. After researching the problem online, I opted to purchase a new superdrive. It's now installed, but the problem persists. I am running OS 10.5.6. Perhaps this problem started after updating my system. Not sure about that.

It's amazing how many posts there are regarding this problem. But, no one seems to have a definitive answer. Suggestions include: cleaning the drive, replacing the drive, zapping the PRAM (I've done this), and running Disk Warrior (don't currently own it).

Software :: MacBook Pro Not Recognizing DVDs

Aug 9, 2009

I own a MacBook Pro, around a year old, which is not recognising any video DVDs I insert. After putting them in, the computer makes the usual motions and sounds, but after a few seconds spits the disk out again. The disk isn't mounted on the desktop during this time, and DVD player does not launch automatically. I have tried opening DVD player myself while the computer is trying to find the disk, but there is still no result.

My MacBook has previously recognised these same disks, up to a few weeks ago when I found I might need to insert the disk two or three times before it played. CDs are still recognised by the computer (and iTunes, as well as mounting on the desktop), as are DVD-ROMs. I have tried many different DVDs, all of which play in my other Macs and DVD players.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mac Mini Stopped Recognizing Blank DVDs?

I purchased a Mac Mini about 2 months ago and was making DVD backups with a Samsung SE-S084D external drive. The first ones went OK, but now the system suddenly stopped recognizing blank DVDs... the drive reads all other discs unless the ones that are blank. It keeps saying The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

MacBook Pro :: MBP Not Recognizing USB Mic

Dec 31, 2010

I'm trying to use a Blue Snowball USB microphone to record in Garage Band (run on Mac OSX Snow Leopard). However, Garageband is not recognizing the Snowball when I go to Preferences.

In addition my mac is not recognizing the snowball when I go under sound within system preferences.

The power light is illuminated on the Snowball. I tried the Blue on my friend's mac computer and it also did not recognize the mic.

PowerPC :: G4 Not Recognizing New Ram

Sep 1, 2008

I bought a powermac G4 from ebay awhile back but just recently got it up and running. So far i am liking it and decided i wanted more ram then the 384MB it was sent with. So i looked on ebay to find ram, i purchased this ram right here. [URL] I bought 3x512mb and none of the sticks are recognized in any of the 3 slots. I'm thinking the problem is that the ram is high density, can any give me their opinion on it. Also, with pc's there is a way to get to a bios screen, do macs have anything similar to that? Besides the boot selection screen? I forgot to mention, the mac i own is a powermac g4 single 533MHz cpu.

OS X :: MBP Not Recognizing Workgroup

Jun 30, 2009

I recently purchased a 15" MBP which is replacing an old PB G4. I used the PB at home and at the office and it performed brilliantly. I thought the transition to the new MBP would be seamless and it has been, save for one major issue. I cannot connect to my office server. In the past I simply brought my PB in, connected the ethernet cable in, clicked on "Network" and my office servers would appear in the Finder. When I tried the same thing with the MBP, I clicked on (my name)'s MacBook Pro>Network only to see a small icon of an Airport Extreme Base.

When I clicked on this it pointed me back to my HDD at my home which is plugged into the AEBS. That's all well and good and I love the ability to read my HDD at home from my desk at work but that's all that clicking on "Network" makes available to me. I have tried manually connecting though Finder>Connect to Server>Browse to no avail. Has Leopard made this so simple that I am overlooking a simple step or is it so complicated now that I need to bring in the IT professionals?

OS X :: Burn / Rip DVDs On Mac

Mar 2, 2009

I'm new to using the Mac. I currently have the Macbook Pro as well as the 24" iMac. I have been trying and trying to burn some CDs and well as DVDs but have no idea how to do it. Could someone lead me to a link or give me directions on how to do it please? I usually use Nero on my PC, but would hate to go back n forth for this operation. Also, I rip alot of my DVDs as a back up as well as to watch them on my HD player. Normally I would use DVD Shrink on my PC. Am I able to do the same on Mac or do I need an additional software?

MacBook Pro :: Won't Rip Any DVDs

Nov 10, 2009

Just got a brand new uMBP (mid 2009); came with 10.6.2; migrated all my stuff from a backup of my old computer (which was running 10.5). Every program seems to run great, except that I cannot get Mactheripper (or Ripit) to rip any DVD. (My old Mid-2008 MBP, running 10.5 had no issues.) MTR opens, seems to do a rip in a very small amount of time, say 3 min when it should take 30, but says bad sectors, all that. I "reinstalled libraries," and it still failed. FWIW, Ripit fails with the burn after a few seconds. This is on more than one disc, for both MTR and Ripit, which tells me this might be about my system. The Superdrive plays DVDs fine, btw. Is there a pref file I need to trash, or something like that which might "reset" something to allow my drive to rip anything? Is this an issue with Snow Leopard? Something else in the system?

OS X :: Using VLC To Rip DVDs - Rip Top Menu?

Jan 31, 2010

I have recently downloaded VLC to rip DVDs onto my mac so that I can put them into my video library for easy use. I am aware of the numerous threads on this site but cant seem to find a solution to my problem: I am following the instructions offered on this site but cant get past the opening menu screen that you always get on DVDs [scene selection, extras etc etc]. The instructions suggest that I need to select the 2nd or 3rd title to rectify this, try playing it as a test before ripping away. However, it doesn't seem to matter which title or chapter I select on the VLC options I only ever manage to rip the top menu??

PowerPC :: IBook G4 1.42 Not Recognizing New Ram

Dec 26, 2006

I've already RMA'd the first 1gb stick back to Crucial, and now I'm on the second. Sometimes the system boots, sometimes it hangs at a blank screen until I hold the power button down long enough to turn it off. But when I CAN actually get up and running, "About This Mac" reports that I only have the onboard 512mb. System Profiler says my singular expansion slot as empty! Yes, I've tried re-seating it-- many times. To no avail. I'm also positive the module is as far into the slot as it can go. And I find it hard to believe that Crucial would send me two faulty sticks in a row. Unfortunately, due to my built-in 512mb, I can't boot off the Crucial ram alone.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Not Recognizing RAM

Jan 7, 2007

I pulled a 256mb stick out of the girlfriend's dead PC laptop and it fits in my 14" iBook G4 and when I originally put it in, "About this Mac" said I had 768mb, meaning it recognized the new RAM, now its about three weeks later and "About this Mac" says its 512mb again. So, I pulled the RAM out, put it back in, it recognized it for about a day and now its back to saying 512mb.I know when you buy RAM new, it comes with a CD(usually) to scan your computer, so is that the problem and if so, is there a download of the software online?

What is weird is that when it only had the 512 stick in there, it seemed faster then with just the other 3 sticks. Is it just saying the wrong number?

PowerPC :: 12" G4 Not Recognizing New Hdd?

May 15, 2008

I just replaced the original 20gb Toshiba HD in my 12" white G4 iBook (1.2gHz, 1.25gb RAM) with a new Western Digital 80gb Scorpio drive. No real issues with the swap, except the new harddrive apparently isn't being recognized. Don't see it in either the Disk Utility or System Profiler, but I can sure hear it spinning after power-up. I know it needs to be formatted, but how is that possible without being able to access it with the Disk Utility?

So, what's my next step? Anything I can try without taking the whole damn thing apart again and checking things with the old harddrive? BTW, only trouble with the old drive was its size. I've been running Leopard on it for several months.

OS X :: IMovie Not Recognizing DVD Format

I'm trying (desperately!) to copy a section of a DVD. it is approximately 1h30mins long, but I only need 10mins for a work project. I am having real trouble doing this. I am new to Mac and so am probably doing something wrong. I'll run through what I've done so far:

1-Ripped the dvd to a m4v format and put it on my desktop
2-Opened iMovie and tried to import the file
3-The file is visible, but is grey and unable to be selected
4-Clicked the file on my desktop to preview it, it automatically opened in iTunes-I don't know if that is normal or not

The file is able to be played in Quicktime.

OS X :: Web Browsers Not Recognizing Internet

Jun 13, 2009

Neither Safari (v4) nor Firefox can connect to the internet. However, my internet connection is fine, and iTunes is currently downloading a video podcast no problem, in fact I can see under Activity Monitor that it's downloading at 110KB/sec, which is blazing fast for where I live (Indonesia). I can also get email no problem. And the other weird thing, is that I can use Safari for Windows no problem on my Windows side (through Parallels), which I'm using right now.

I did recently update to Safari 4, but up to now I've had no problems. And the fact that I can't use Firefox either leads me to believe it's not just a Safari problem. The only thing I can think is my ISP has recently been updating their system, and I have had some issues recently connecting, but right now my internet connection is otherwise great. Does this have something to do with DNS servers or something? Why can I use Windows browsers on my Mac no problem (through Parallels on Windows XP) but not Apple browsers? I'm on OS 10.5.7 FYI.

Hardware :: G4 Not Recognizing USB Printer

When I "Add Printer" (via Print and Fax preferences, or from any print dialog), I cannot find any option for USB printers (it is not on the Canon IJ Network, it is not a Bluetooth printer, etc. it is plugged directly into the computer)

I know for a fact that I have the driver, and that the printer works, because I have printed using this printer via a network, back before my Mac Mini (into which the printer has always been plugged) died. I have also verified that the USB cable and my USB ports are in working order. And yes, the printer is turned on.

OS X :: Why Mac Desktop Not Recognizing HP Printer

Mar 10, 2010

I have a HP Photosmart C4680 and my mac does not recognize this printer when its plugged in i cant add it to my list of printers. Turned the printer back on let it load and then I re-connected the USB cord & after I did this my mac would recognize the printer and let me add it to the computer under the print & fax settings.

Then the printer went offline again after printing several things and now doing the whole power cycle thing proves to be ineffective. Now I am stuck with a printer that will scan but wont print. How can I get my mac to recognize the printer again? I even tried running the hp installer dmg file but when i get to the 3rd or 4th step it tells me that it cant find a printer.
