PowerPC :: IBook G4 Not Recognizing RAM
Jan 7, 2007
I pulled a 256mb stick out of the girlfriend's dead PC laptop and it fits in my 14" iBook G4 and when I originally put it in, "About this Mac" said I had 768mb, meaning it recognized the new RAM, now its about three weeks later and "About this Mac" says its 512mb again. So, I pulled the RAM out, put it back in, it recognized it for about a day and now its back to saying 512mb.I know when you buy RAM new, it comes with a CD(usually) to scan your computer, so is that the problem and if so, is there a download of the software online?

I've already RMA'd the first 1gb stick back to Crucial, and now I'm on the second. Sometimes the system boots, sometimes it hangs at a blank screen until I hold the power button down long enough to turn it off. But when I CAN actually get up and running, "About This Mac" reports that I only have the onboard 512mb. System Profiler says my singular expansion slot as empty! Yes, I've tried re-seating it-- many times. To no avail. I'm also positive the module is as far into the slot as it can go. And I find it hard to believe that Crucial would send me two faulty sticks in a row. Unfortunately, due to my built-in 512mb, I can't boot off the Crucial ram alone.

Well I have this problem on my iBook. At first I thought it was just my printer, but now I have it with my iPod. I plug anything in to the usb ports and it is connected by my ibook doesn't recognize anything I plugin. My iPod is sitting here on do not disconnect, but it doesn't show up on my desktop or in itunes. When I plug in my Epson printer and try to print, it wont connect to the printer, but the printer is on and the connection is good. They both work on any other computer in my house. I go into system profiler and when I click USB it just has the loading wheel going. That's all I get. The weird thing is that my mouse which is connected via the USB port does work.

I have an iBook G3 Dual USB with 256MB of RAM currently (128 on LB, and 128 in the user accessible slot under the keyboard). I bought a 512MB chip on eBay that meets the exact specs of the required RAM (512MB PC133 SDRAM SODIMM 3.3V) but when I insert it into the RAM slot and turn on the iBook, it says in About This Mac that I only have 128MB of RAM. what I can do, or is the chip possibly not compatible with Apple?

I have a iMac G5 with an Airport Extreme Card installed and an Airport Express Base Station. I have set a password on it and it is working fine on my G5.
I also have a G3 Clamshell iBook with OS 10.3 on it and an Airport card installed there. In my last home, it was able to connect to a default network without problem, but I have never been able to connect it to the same network as my G5. I enter the password and it says thet the password is not recognized. I have since moved into a new house and the only network that shows up is the one from my house (no default anymore and I can't get access to the internet.
I know the card is working since it picked up the default in my last place, but am wondering what I can do to get it to recognize the password. Should I reset the Airport Express. Do I need a more current version of OS X to run it than the OS 10.3 (I haven't updated the software as I just installed OS 10.3 from OS 10.2 last night and didn't have the connection to be able to do a software update - I could just plug it into the ethernet and do it if I need the update.
I don't want to leave it without a password. We are the only people right now in a new sub division but there will be people moving into the area soon that I don't want jacking my internet service.

I have a 366 G3 graphite iBook that was working fine in OS9 a few months ago. I took it out of the closet yesterday and installed 10.3. I did all the updates etc., and now the computer will not recognize the battery! There is a battery icon on top, but when the light is amber on the machine (charging) it says it is calculating how long it will take to charge. Once the light is green (charged) it says there is no battery. I take out the plug and the machine turns off. On top of that, the clock has to be reset everytime I unplug the machine. I don't get it, the battery was like new back in September - it would go for hours. Now it's like it's not even there!

Initially it would intermittently not recognize the RAM that was in the 2nd slot (not the on-board ram). Now it does not recognize the 2nd RAM slot at all. I know it's not the stick, as we've put different sticks in to test.

I have an snow iBook G3 that I use everyday as my machine for doing schoolwork etc., so it is a very critical machine. The battery doesn't hold a charge anymore, so I just plug it in. No big deal. However, just a few hours ago the iBook started to not recognize it was plugged in. The prong has always been bent a bit, I think, and it always worked (before MagSafe type). The charger is beat up at the cord going into the power brick from the wall outlet, but it has always worked too and it seems to be a problem with the prong going into the computer. I have to hold it a very certain way for it to even detect power. So, the machine has NO way to get any power. I was thinking about taking it in to the Apple store to see if they could still get me a non-magsafe charger, but what if its something different then the charger?
The specs are as follows:
12 inch iBook
PowerPC G3
500 mhz
128 gb RAM
I have a Vista laptop I can use until its fixed, but I'd rather not use Windows. No speical prgrams or anything, I just really like Mac OSX. I have files on the iBook, too.

I used this iPod (new) previously on my husbands PC. I recently purchased a refurbished iBook G4 and it works great with the exception of not recognizing my iPod! When I plug it in, it give me the error message: Disc Insertion - The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer. What does this mean? It has been a while since I've used a mac. I've tried restarting my iPod both off and on the mac with no change. I'm worried I'll lose all my music. Have also tried repairing and verifying with no results.

I bought a powermac G4 from ebay awhile back but just recently got it up and running. So far i am liking it and decided i wanted more ram then the 384MB it was sent with. So i looked on ebay to find ram, i purchased this ram right here. [URL] I bought 3x512mb and none of the sticks are recognized in any of the 3 slots. I'm thinking the problem is that the ram is high density, can any give me their opinion on it. Also, with pc's there is a way to get to a bios screen, do macs have anything similar to that? Besides the boot selection screen? I forgot to mention, the mac i own is a powermac g4 single 533MHz cpu.

I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.

When I installed it, system profiler keeps saying it's 256. I have a 128 and 2 64's in there. In the 4th slot I put the 512. I tried just putting it in (to make just 512) and it still said.
What is weird is that when it only had the 512 stick in there, it seemed faster then with just the other 3 sticks. Is it just saying the wrong number?

I just replaced the original 20gb Toshiba HD in my 12" white G4 iBook (1.2gHz, 1.25gb RAM) with a new Western Digital 80gb Scorpio drive. No real issues with the swap, except the new harddrive apparently isn't being recognized. Don't see it in either the Disk Utility or System Profiler, but I can sure hear it spinning after power-up. I know it needs to be formatted, but how is that possible without being able to access it with the Disk Utility?
So, what's my next step? Anything I can try without taking the whole damn thing apart again and checking things with the old harddrive? BTW, only trouble with the old drive was its size. I've been running Leopard on it for several months.

I have two USB harddrives and neither of them are recognized by my G4. One of them consistently requires two ports for power, so I'm not surprised that one isn't working. However, my backup drive (a Verbatim) should not need that and it is supposedly compatible with USB 1.1 ports. It shows up on a Macbook. I am also quite sure that the ports themselves are working.

My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.

I have a 12" PowerBook G4 that stopped recognizing the factory hard-drive some time back. I have a G4 iBook so I was not in a hurry to look into it. I removed the old hard-drive and replaced it with a Scorpio drive of 60GB. It still fails to recognize the hard-drive. If I run the Apple Care diagnostics it hangs at the start-up while 'scanning for volume' or something like that. t hangs for 15-minutes or more and never moves past. The CD-RW drive is fine as I can boot the machine into the OSX installer up to the point where it asks for a destination...at which point nothing is selectable. It is a 867MHz G4 PowerBook with 768MG RAM. This is a fantastic notebook and I would hate to see it remain in this state. Does anyone have any ideas? I replaced the IDE cable and hard-drive with all new Mac OEM parts (except the HD) and reset the PRAM or PMU or what ever it is called...with no results.

My powermac G5 has been off for a week while I was moving apartments. When I plugged it in again the external harddrives (four in all) that were daisy chained through the two firewire ports aren't being recognized anymore. I thought it was a bad cord or insufficient power but nothing worked. When I finally got around to looking at the System Profiler and check Firewire it said, "Unable to list firewire devices". I admit that I'm at a loss and I have no idea how to troubleshoot this.

Right now I have a G3 iBook (900 MHz, 640 MB RAM, Combodrive, 40 GB HDD). I'm looking at a G4 iBook (1.2 GHz, 768 MB RAM, Superdrive, 60 GB HDD).
How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?

So, I'll spare you guys the details, haha, but I am stuck trying to decide between getting an iMac Intel or a MacBook Pro for my home use computer. What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?

It just came to my mind that at some storage place of mine, I have an old special edition (grey) iBook that i bought in 1999, if I remember correctly. Can't look it up right now, but I think it had one USB port, one ethernet port, a CD-ROM drive, and it was running OS9.
Is anyone of you still using old iBooks, and what for? Would a version (which?) of OS X run, or would you suggest staying with OS9? Kind of sad to have it just laying around - it was amazing, back in the days.

I had my iBook G4 a few years ago, and since I was about eleven when I had it, I'm not sure I always took the best care of it, but it's always worked pretty much fine up until about a week ago. It's started shutting down randomly. It also sometimes randomly goes to sleep in the middle of things. In particular, it doesn't seem to like starting up, or the internet, especially if I'm on youtube. I've tried a PMU reset, as it worked once before when my laptop wouldn't start up, but it hasn't worked properly. It's worked from anywhere from a minute from the time I start up again, to about a day or two at most, but it always seems to shut down again.
I really don't know what else to do with it... and I don't understand how computers work at all.
