OS X :: Looking For Bootable DVDs
Feb 18, 2010
I'm wondering if a mac can boot from a DVD if only the installation file is there (nothing else). Can a iMac boot from a .dmg installation file (if you hold down c on start up)? Also is a .toast extension a bootable file on the mac?

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.
I tried converting it in the terminal with:
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.
I tried the terminal command:
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.
I tried the terminal command:
cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I just recently purchased a Macbook, and I created a bootable backup of the system. The macbook boots from the backup, but when I try to boot from the backup on our G5 and also our Powerbook G4 it will not work. The G5 does not even see the bootable partitions I created, and the G4 sees them, but when I select the partition to boot from, the computer just restarts and boots from the Powerbook hardrive. We are having to send the Macbook back for some small power issues, and we need a bootable backup of this sytem that works. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the Macbook is an intel based computer and the Powerbook G4 is not? Also, the macbook is running Snow Leopard, and the Powerbook is on Tiger.

Been searching online for an easy way to copy DVDs to the hard drive so they can be watched without the external DVD player needed for the MacBook Air.I've converted the DVD to a .DMG file using the disk utility tool and then mounted it...but cant figure out how to make it actually execute inside of QuickTime...

I purchased an app online, and seeing as they had an option to download the app, I downloaded it. (I do believe I still have available to me the option of the cd to be shipped, but I'm not sure) Now I need to use it in a way that requires it to be booted off a cd... The software downloaded was in a disk image format. Are there any specific instructions/steps I need to take in order to ensure that I produce a bootable cd? I'd hate to waste a perfectly good CD-R by a stupid mistake of making it non-bootable.

I am trying to figure out what the best way is to create a bootable DVD frm a DMG file?
Upon first purchasing Leopard 10.5 way back when it came out, I decided to back up the disk on my computer by creating a Disk Image. Turns out it was a good move because now that I need the disc, it seems to have picked up a big scratch on it's surface, and it simply refuses to mount at this point...
I can use either Toast or Disk Utility to accomplish this task (or the terminal if absolutely necessary, but I would really prefer using one of the GUIs I've just mentioned). I was hoping someone would be gracious enough to provide me with instructions on what would be the best way to create a bootable DVD from this DMG file.

I would like to make my usb memory bootable. Is it any way to get the drive to show up in startup items in sys.prefs? I have tried with fdisk, hdiutil and diskutil but have not been able to select my drive. I thought it was going to happen with fdisk. Typing fdisk /dev/disk1 gives me this.

I used a program called carbon copy cloner to make a clone of my father's mac book pro onto an external hd usb. I already erased the laptop so I can't go back too it for another copy so I'm stuck.
Anyhow, all the data copied over nicely. However it said it will make the drive bootable. But it does not. I partitioned GUID so it should boot cuz intel macs can boot usb if partitioned GUID. But it won't boot on the macbook pro intel or my mac mini intel. Both core duo (not 2 duo). And I can't reinstall because the dvd is 10.5.0 and we have 10.5.8 on the external.
Unless there is a way to remove 5.8 and go back to zero but I don't hink so. I did Disk first aid and it says the drive is fine. It is brand new. And it won't let me verify or repair permissions. Don't know what to do.

I tried to install ubuntu with bootcamp on a different hard drive. Something happened and now when I turn on my computer it says no bootable devices. It doesn't even see my OSX hard drive. I tried booting up my computer and holding down option. It doesn't work. I have a wireless microsoft keyboard. Is it not letting me hold down option because the computer finds the wrieless keyboard to late. Some one said u have to hold down the option key before the mac sounds happens. The keyboard lights don't come on till after that. Should I get a USB keyboard? I have to press the start button on the keyboard to act as the option key when I'm in osx. Would the computer know that the start key is the option key on boot up?

Been searching for the answer to this question, so far to no avail. How can I create a bootable disk with Disk Utility on it? I need to run Disk Utility to repair my main startup disk on my G5 tower, which is running tiger 10.4.11. I do not have access to the original system installation disks for this computer. I also have an early Intel Dual Core tower running Tiger 10.4.11. That machine has Toast Titanium version 8.0.1. Also no access to the system installation disks.

When I first got Leopard I restored an image onto my new hdd before I used it as a time machine drive. Does anyone know what will happen if I restore an image of snow leopard onto it and uncheck the erase drive option? Will I just have a bootable time machine drive w/ SL or will I mess up my TM backups?

I've recently bought a used macbook air 2010 model and i've been trying to bootcamp windows 7 onto it. as you know the air doesn't have an optical drive so i have a windows 7 iso mounted on a usb drive.
note that this is my first time using osx.
the steps i've taken so far are as follows:
-Run Boot Camp Assistant
-Downloaded latest Windows support software onto a separate usb stick.
-Set up the desired partitions
The windows 7 usb drive is plugged in and when i click "install", it says the installer cannot be found. I've searched online for solutions but none succeeded.
Info:MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Most of the time my G5 has difficulies starting up from the original installation-dvd provided with this computer. The drive is the standard Apple delivered LG/Hitachi GWA 4165B, seldom used and normally functioning well. The disk shows up on the desktop, but choosing the dvd as the boot drive in system preferences or using the C-key only results in a very short flash of the wellknown "question-mark system folder" and a startup from the hard drive: after a restart with the option key pressed even the boot manager cannot find a bootable optical disk at all.
The problem might be connected to my observation that the computer sometimes looses contact with the ATA/ATAPI-bus; suddenly I cannot open the drawer anymore and system info reports that no optical drive was found. In this situation restarting doesn't help; I have to shut down the computer completely and after restart all is well again for as long as maybe the whole day or a view hours.GeForce 6600 LE

Anyone know how to create a msdos bootable cd [that an imac can read]? I can create the cd in a working windows environment. I have found many dead end links online thus far.

I have recently added an SSD drive to my system and cloned the original main drive. As I make use of bootcamp deleted the bootcamp partition from the original drive and plan to use it just as a data disk (it already has my data on it). Disk A:Mac OSWindows 7 (in bootcamp)Disk B:Mac Data diskThe trouble is I am now being presented with 3 disk options on start-up as both the SSD and the original disk OS X instances are showing (as well as the Windows). How do I stop the original disk being bootable? I have taken a look at fdisk and diskutil which both show that the original disk has the bootable flag set - but I have no idea how to remove the setting.

When I start the Mac the text "No bootable device, insert boot disk than press any key". Is it because I tried to install XP? If I put xp in my superdrive it starts the installing guide but I've tried to delete this partition.
