My 24" iMac's external LCD monitor is slow to "wake up". I initially thought it was Windows 7 running in a Parallels session but I tested it by not running Parallels at all and the problem still exists.

When the display dims after x minutes of inactivity, it takes 10-15 seconds after activity (mouse click, key press, etc.) for the screen to "un-dim". Same happens when trying to wake from the screen saver or sleep.Â
I have tried restarting as well as restarting w/PRAM reset. After the PRAM reset, the MBP would wake as usual for a little while, but then reverted back to the slow wake bug.Â

I'm hoping I can get some ideas and guidance on this. A few months ago I bought my wife a 17" MBP. At the time we had a D-Link DIR655 Wireless-N router and the MBP worked great with it. If I woke the machine from sleep the reconnection to the wireless network was pretty much instantaneous.
Unfortunately that router started to flake out and I replaced it with what is considered to be a top of the line router, Netgear WNDR3700. This router has a dual N band. One band is N only the other one is B/G/N. I have attached the MBP to both networks.
When the MBP wakes up it takes up to a minute for the wireless to be re-established. Weirdly it will reconnect to the SECOND of the two networks that are listed in priority order on the advanced wireless settings.If I remove either of the two networks and only have one listed, sometimes the MBP will take over a minute to eventually get reconnected.Does anyone have any thought on this? It's very frustrating and I haven't figured out why the reconnection is so slow with this very high end router. All my other wireless devices maintain their connection to the router very well with no drops or reconnects.
I need to extend my iMAC HD. I do not think I can open it and upgrade the HD inside. What I am think about is getting a Firewire 800 external HD. Does there a HD so I can connect it to MAC. it will fall sleep or turn off when Mac is power off and when MAC is power on(Firewire has power) then the HD will wake up auto.

The last couple of times I have woken my MBP up a box has popped up with a big red sign in the middle saying my external hard drive was removed unexpectedly and could have caused loss of data. I know this is not healthy and I would like to stop it doing this as soon as possible. It is connected via firewire 800 and is a western digital 250 gig my book pro if that makes any difference. I close the lid of my laptop with it still on and connected and everything is supposed to sleep. It used to work fine, I would open the lid and everything would wake up and I could do what I was doing before with no error messages and the hard drive would still be mounted on the desktop.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm on an early 2008 mac pro - used to be on a Powerbook G4. I have a 300 GB LaCie d2 Extreme external HD connected via firewire 800. Both are in 10.5.2. While on my powerbook, the drive behaved normally - fell asleep after no use, then awakened when I needed to access something. On my new mac pro, the drive behaves strangely. I only use it for backup, so it's only accessed once a day. The rest of the time I do not use it. When it's not in use, the drive sporadically wakes and sleeps. I've tried to pinpoint the cause to no avail.
I've tried all the usual suspects: browsing the forums, checking the "hard disk sleep" preference in energy saver, switching the firewire 800 cable with usb and firewire 400, watching activity monitor to see if there's a program accessing the drive (haven't found anything, but that doesn't mean it's not there). None of it works.
This started recently and is quite annoying. Like the title says, if I put my computer to sleep via apple menu/sleep while it is attached to my external monitor the computer will not "wake up". When I try to wake up the computer the sleep indicator stops pulsing and I can hear the hard drive start spinning. As a result I must force shut down the computer by holding the power button. The computer is fully charged so it is not a low battery issue. The external monitor is an 20" Apple Cinema Display, it is attached via Apple's DVI connector. Â
Unplugging the monitor dongle and replugging it in do not work. Pressing any assortment of keys does not bring the display back up. Â
I've tried resetting PRAM, disk permissions, and verifying the disk.Â

When I wake up the computer from sleep, it works on the main monitor, however the external display still has a black screen. I have to unplug the external monitor to get it to wake up. I tried unplugging thunderbolt and replugging it in which worked the first time, but same issue again not waking up.

When I have my macbook hooked up to external monitor it works great unitl I put it to sleep. Sometimes it kicks right up to the external monitor but the majority of the time it cant reconnect to the monitor. It just turns blue then off then blue likes its trying to figure out what to do eventually it says out of range. I then have to unplug the external monitor, wake up my mac with the screen open reconnect the monitor wait for it to pick up and then close it again and wah laaa it works.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new AppleTV set up in my entertainment center on the other side of my house from my office, where my MacBook Pro is. Currently I have my U-verse gateway(which has a wireless router built in) in my home theater. The AppleTV is wired into the gateway. The signal from the gateway does not reach my office so I was able to hack a linksys router into a repeater bridge (different SSID as my U-verse setup). This allows me to stream my iTunes library, which is stored on an external HD (1.5tb) connected to my Mac, to my Apple TV.

System properties -> Energy saver -> Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible is On Everything works perfect in case of local access.
Also in case library's drive sleeps, it takes just several seconds more in order to wake drive. But remote access works only in case the drive is waked somehow. I.e. if Home Sharing is enabled and drive sleeps I cannot get access to the content from remote iTunes or Apple TV.Â
I think it is a bug, remote access shall be not broken in case the drive is sleeping. Also it is known, some forums explain that you shall never put external drives in sleep mode in case this drive used for iTunes Home Sharing [URL]

I'm booting an iMac from an external hard drive. WoW is on that hard drive and I was wondering since WoW has a reputation of slowing down computers, if I play while on the external drive will it still degrade performance of the computer when it's booted off the internal hard drive? ANd if it does, how noticeable will it be?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a question about using an external USB hard drive. Currently I have a 1TB Western Digital "MyBook" attached to my 21.5" iMac. I am currently (and have been since I picked up this external drive) experiencing slow speeds on the drive. The slow speeds are primarily noticeable when (a) the drive has not been used for x minutes and needs to spin up, and (b) when I attempt to play music via iTunes or video via VLC directly from the USB drive. I've been copying the media to play from the USB drive to the iMac and playing it thus. Any ideas why the slow speeds are happening? Could there be a compatibility problem (i.e., USB HD is USB 1.x whereas iMac is USB 2?) or an incorrect setting (causing the slow access time for the HD?) Also any suggestions for upgrading the drive (SSD, FW)?

My work computer is a 15" MBP at 2.0 Ghz and I think a drop to 1.6 Ghz wouldn't be so bad if I could use a separate monitor and not see anymore of a performance drop.

I have been trying to figure this out all day and it has been driving me nuts. First of all I have a Macbook with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of RAM and am running Mac OS X Version 10.5.6. Also this is the last generation of the "white" macbook that came out in February I believe of last year.
My external HD is a 1TB Rock Mobile Disk. For some reason when I try to transfer files to or from the external HD to my Mac I am getting nowhere near the expected 480MB/s. I do use a Swiss Gear 4-port USB splitter. When I use the splitter I am getting a transfer rate of about 120MB/s and without it I am only getting about 300MB/s. This is of course if I am only trying to transfer one 800MB movie. If I attempt to transfer multiple seasons of television shows it will drop to as low as 40-50MB/s. Also, if I were to be transferring a single season of a TV show. The transfer speed is much faster to click and drag every episode from my HD to my Mac than it is to transfer the entire folder at once. The whole folder might take 25 minutes but one at a time it will only take about 5.
I am trying to use a WD Elements external HD formatted to Mac OS Extended, and the box says that the HD should have a USB 2.0 adapter, meaning it should transfer over 400 MB/s. Unfortunately for me, I've had many problems with this HD and it is now crawling at around 2.5MB/s, slower than 1.1 speeds. At the moment, it is at 750MB/93.51GB - About 21 hours. This is unexceptable, and I make HD videos, which are usually from 200 - 500 MB, and this would take AGES! I had no problems on my PC with this drive. Please help me! Should I format it to something else, get a new one, or something else? Please leave your suggestions below. Also, if you have an HD that works well, please leave it below,
P.S. All ports are free, except for the one with the HD in it. All that I have hooked up to my Late-2009 21.5" iMac is my wireless Apple keyboard, and my Magic Mouse. Nothing else hooked up to the computer AT ALL!
If I was to hook my MacBook Pro 13inch 4GB RAM, 250 HD to a monitor and use the Magic Mouse and Apple wireless keyboard would it slow the performance of my laptop?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little.
Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!

I am about to order a 1 TB external hard drive to store my photos and iTunes library on.
It will have Firewire 800, so will my iTunes access files on the external drive as fast if they were the internal drive? ( and will iPhoto do the same? )
I have my iTunes library on my 1TB external, and recently I have noticed that when I do stuff like changing the genre on songs that it takes a while to process. Anyone else having this problem? I have contacted WD and they said to try a new USB cable and then if that didn't work, to reformat it. So right now I am in the process of moving the 700gb to my imac so that i can try to reformat.

However, this problem has occurred only copying file from external to my MBP, the transfer rate is fine when copying files from MBP to external
Note : I've already repair the disk by using disk utilities, but it doesn't help me at all.
I have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.
Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

My trusty G5 dual tower 1.8 is competent, but slow for HD video rendering. Would the new Mini be a significant upgrade for me? I have a great monitor and keyboard already. I can't see much difference between the Mini and standard Imac, beside the slower internal drive. If I use an external firewire drive for capturing, would this no longer be an issue?

I am attempting to make room on our iMac so am moving our 193 GB iPhoto library to our Seagate 2TB external hard drive. The drive is brand new AND is formated properly as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the current copy estimate is for it be completed in over 80 hours. I dont beleive the drive is broken as data is continuing to be transferred and not completely hung up. Â
When I transfer other folders/files the process is much much faster. Problem only seems to be with iPhoto library that I have found. Â
