My trusty G5 dual tower 1.8 is competent, but slow for HD video rendering. Would the new Mini be a significant upgrade for me? I have a great monitor and keyboard already. I can't see much difference between the Mini and standard Imac, beside the slower internal drive. If I use an external firewire drive for capturing, would this no longer be an issue?
View 4 RepliesWhat is the best use/purpose for the Mac Mini? My wife's G4 (Granite) Tower is ancient and slow and freezes up frequently so it's time to get another computer. I have a 5 year old MacBook Pro sitting unused after I bought a 2.13GHz MacBook Air . I am contemplating buying a Mac Mini or an 11 inch AirBook. The Macbook Air would give some flexibility to the household by being portable. She does only basic stuff, nothing fancy, so anything will be better than what she's using now. (At some point in the future, I may give my son the Airbook for college and get a new one for me, but that's not what I want to do now.)So my question to the community would be what do you recommend?
1) Reformat and use the 5 year old MacBook Pro (free)
2) Mac Mini? ($599) (I have an external monitor, keyboard and an external Mac Disk Drive so no need to buy them.)
3) MacBookAir 11 inch ($1100)
4) iMac ($1200) (I think this is overkill for her.)
I bought leopard family pack to update the operating system on my intel macbook and g4 733 tower, the problem being that my tower does not have a dvd drive. Is there anyway to use the macbook as an external dvd drive to install leopard which is currently running 10.3.9?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Pro (Intel) and have 2 empty hard drive slots. I have an external 2TB hard drive that I would like to take out of it's case and install into the tower. Can I do this without ruining the external drives? Here is my concern: I own an ACOMDATA 2TB drive, Model DHD2000UFAB-72. It is actually 2 hard drives inside. Is there something in the external case that or motherboard inside the external case that helps them run together as one? If I put each one inside a separate slot in my tower will it work?

But he said he was going to use FCS as well. His question was if he could replace the G5 singlecore chip, with a G5 dualcore chip. And if that's possible, could somebody give me extra info about compatibility and such. For example, will it just boot without problems when you replaced it, or do you need to do extra things (drivers, reinstalling the os and such). The G5 will be used in the near future for HD video editing. Also, I know the new intel mac pro have graphic cards from nvidia and ati. But what graphic cards do the G5 towers have? are they good?
View 17 Replies View RelatedMy computer crashed yesterday, and when I reboot, it took forever to restart, then crashed a couple more times. I tried a disk repair from the install CD disk utilities, but after an hour or so, it said disk couldn't repair (I think it repaired things like the B-tree and directories). Now it takes 10mins+ to boot, and apps that used to launch right away, take a long time. There's a lag as I type this in now. It's a dual 2ghz PowerPC G5, 3gigs of ram, running on tiger 10.4.11.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI just got a brand new Mac Mini 2,26 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 gig RAM, and it's hooked up to my tv with a mini-DVI adapter. Snow Leopard installed. I noticed right away that the screen looks really sluggish, with screen tearing and laggy video performance. Playing videos in Plex for instance there is a lot of screen tear and I had to set the display to 720p to get it decent, and even then it's rough, even on SD videos! So I ran Xbench, and got a remarkable slow score on OpenGL; 43. My MacBook Pro running with the 9400M card got 97.
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy old mini reached the capacity of its hard drive 500gb. So I bought a new mini with dual hard drives a 256ssd and 750gb std drive. When I tried to migrate my info and settings I received the message "disk full". I realized that there was no choice for selecting which hard drive stores what info. I wanted my operating system and settings on the SSD and the iPhoto and iTunes libraries stored on the larger HD. I tried using target disk mode which allowed me to see both hard drives and I transferred my settings except for these large iTunes and iPhoto libraries to my new mini.
However when I opened iTunes it was blank, no music movies or playlists. I realize iTunes match will bring these back, but my fear is that when I sync my iPhone iPad or touch it will force me to erase these devices and I will have to re do everything, move my app icons around, re input all my app settings etc. what can I do to transfer all my iTunes settings to my new dual drive Mac? What is the proper way to do this? will I have to start new each time I get a new Mac because of the dual drive situation?

Have a new Mac Mini, using an external drive but I can't get it to show up in finder. It's a Lacie 1TB Porsche design HDD, using a USB connection directly into the mini. I tried it at first by connecting to an open usb on my cinema display..no good. Also no good when connected directly into the mini.

After reading through several pages of post's on here I am still at a stand still on upgrading my original macpro 2.66ghz quad core. The reason I am upgrading the stock card is I cant handle the grainy look on my photos after using my same moniter with my new macbook pro. Also I am going to be using my bootcamp vista side to play bluray and hd dvds. I recently purchased the new buffalo dual external drive but the images are blury and after a hd video test my graphics card failed misserably. Can someone point me in the right direction. I want to spend around 275-300 shipped. My lcd display supports hdmi and all recent standards.

I have spent no less than 14 hours on the phone with Linksys, can't get through to Western Digital, and Applecare tells me they don't work with PC hardware.
I just got a new 2010 mini to use for some web development, as well as a media streamer for my tv. I want to be able to stream standard and HD mkv/h.264 video from either the internal HD, external HD, or my server.
Obviously, the internal HD should work well...my question is, would it be faster to stream from an external HD or my server? The server and mini are wired into the network via Gbit ethernet, and the external would be USB (or it could be FW800 if that would make a difference).I'm going to use Plex as the front-end.
I am having a problem configuring my mac to display a movie on a tv.
I am using the Dynex mini-DVI to video component. I plugged the component into my mac and the extension cable to the tv.
Once the mac was on, the only thng the tv did was display static.
I tried searching through the display options to reset the resolution and and refresh rate, but was unsuccessful.
The tv I am trying to set up is a Sony 40" HDtv.
I have a Powermac Dual G5 @2.0ghz, with 8gbs of ram, and 2 1tb drives running the latest version of 10.5. The problem I have is that I have 4 LCD monitors that I was using with my PC. I swapped that out with my mac, and while I am no novice, I didnt take into account that I cant just put any AGP and PCI video card into the system. What I need to know is if I can use two PCI video cards both with Dual Monitor outputs, and if so, which cards should I buy, and where? I found some video cards on ebay that are PCI, and it is quartz extreme compatible, but I am unable to use it with the AGP card already installed. The person selling the cards was unable to answer whether or not two of those cards could be used together. I only have about 75 per card to spend. Please help, I cant go on using this awesome machine with only one 19inch LCD. and I cant afford to buy new monitors
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.
I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.
Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.
I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?
I updated my G3 today to 10.3 finally and everything was working great until I updated software to 10.3.9 now my wireless isn't detecting any signals while it was working before the update. I'm thinking a driver was broken any ideas. It's a linksys wireless adapter I do believe.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHave a MDD that always needs the surge protector shut off then back on to start it.I had installed a Western Digital 750GB drive in it.It has Tiger on it with all of my docs and pictures etc.Have been scared of using the MDD and bought an Early 2009 Mini to replace it.The mini only has a 120GB drive (and 4GB RAM) and I don't want it to get filled up.It had Leopard and I upgraded it to Snow Leopard.Some of my Tiger software can't be upgraded to SL, so I'd need to use the MDD drive to access it.Can the HD be used as an external drive and booted from the Mini with Firewire in order to use Tiger? Currently, I'm using a USB drive with the Mini to save docs and pics on, but it's getting to be a pain because some stuff isn't on it and have to change USB drives.
As others have said, the Mini blows the doors off the MDD!I maxed out the MDD to 2GB of RAM and thought it was fast. The Mini's runs circles around it!

Have used off the shelf dvd copy in the past on pc's but dvd's too easy to scratch, unusable. Will Imovie work or do I need something stronger to get job done? Money no object. I have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.
Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

I am transferring my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and it is agonizingly slow.
I am attempting to make room on our iMac so am moving our 193 GB iPhoto library to our Seagate 2TB external hard drive. The drive is brand new AND is formated properly as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the current copy estimate is for it be completed in over 80 hours. I dont beleive the drive is broken as data is continuing to be transferred and not completely hung up.
When I transfer other folders/files the process is much much faster. Problem only seems to be with iPhoto library that I have found.
