View 6 RepliesI love my PowerBook G3 Firewire (a.k.a. Pismo or 2000) but it isn't the zippiest computer ever. So as I find the pismo is more a collector's item than it is a regular laptop I have decided I'm going to try to sell it on eBay. It's got a 500MHz G3, 256MB RAM, 1MB L2 Cache, DVD drive, and an $80 hard drive I installed myself with 80GB. I hope to get about $350 for it? I have $120 in addition to what I'll get from the pismo.
eBay has dual core mac minis like new or in sealed box with 1GB RAM and everything for $450 and $475. I was first considering an iBook G4. I don't have another laptop to bring between my mom and dad's houses. The advantage of a laptop for me is keeping my data I need with me. I have a portable hard drive but the computers over at the other house aren't totally mine like the ones here. I could always upload everything to a .Mac account but then I couldn't access it from a windows computer? I guess what it comes down to is the iBook G4 being a computer with a big future ahead of it. If it will run the latest apps and stuff for the next 3-5 years without problems (I don't really do video/music editing, yet, but I am a power user) then I'd be happier with the iBook G4 and then my brand new custom built PC could do windows and osx86 when I finally get that going. If the iBook won't be then I should really just go with the mac mini instead because I'll need a good mac for the future.
I've been running on a "dual-oldies" setup -- G4 Mini for main/personal work, and G4 iBook as my mobile unit/business HD. I often Firewire them together so I can do business stuff with my main monitor and keyboard.
I finally decided that I don't mind an older/slower field unit (and I actually like the fact that if my laptop dies/gets stolen/falls off a bridge, I can just buy a "new" iBook for cheap as long as I have the data backed up elsewhere). But I really need to update the Mini to the latest model, because it just doesn't keep up with my multitasking needs anymore. Before I do, though, should I be worried about compatibility issues if I keep linking these two computers together as I've done in the past?
I know there are some issues with booting an intel from a PPC. What else should I keep in mind?
I am getting an Ibook G3 from a friend and it is kinda old, I think the HD is about 20gb and i am sure it is running panther. I would at least like it to run tiger, that is what i have in my intel mac mini. Is there a way to clone the HD of my mini and maybe get a slightly bigger HD for the ibook and just use the clone from the mini in the ibook? I dont want to put much money into the ibook as far as buying the os and such because im sure it has or will get the gpu problem sooner or later. I just want to know if it is possible to do this task.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an old Summer 2000 iMac DV SE running Tiger. Recently when I powered up the machine I saw the display flicker a bit then went dead. I also began to smell something burning from the rear ventilation ports. Now when I press the power button, it lights up for a brief moment then the burning smell returns.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am a Graphic/Web Designer. Currently I have a dual 867mhz G4 that doesn't cut it. I can go all out and bring the machine up to dual 1.42 G4, 2gb ram, Radeon 3850, etc etc... BUT Before I lay out the money for it, would it be worth going for a second hand intel mini? The gpu in them I know is terrible but that aside does anyone have experience of the performance between the two when running; Adobe Photoshop, In-Design, Illustrator and Dreamweaver CS3 as well as Inkscape and GIMP and occasionally Google Sketchup. I'm not bothered about noise etc, only the performance difference.

My Intel MacBook is in the shop, and I swapped out my hard drive before I sent it in and put it in a USB enclosure. I was able to boot my friend's MacBook Pro from the drive, but my G4 Mac Mini is not seeing it as an option (upon startup or otherwise). I can read files from it, but I really need to boot from the drive for some other things (cookies, passwords, and especially the ability to sync my iPod touch).
How do you change what programs open on start up?

I have purchase a new mini and want to transfer programs from my older MacPro before recycling it. Problem is, it's 4 yrs old and I have run upgrades via downloads and no longer have discs - but then again the new mini doesn't have an optical drive.

Have files going back to the 80's. Word Perfect, multimate and other formats. How do I open and use these files with the Lion operating system?

What I used to love about my Powerbook G4 is that it's pretty much silent, unless I happen to be burning something, or running several programs at once. However, this appears to be a thing of the past, as I've begun to notice that the fan is now permanently whizzing, and while it's not loud, it's anything but silent. This happens constantly, while I'm running minimal programs, and while my computer is sitting on my desk, not on any soft surfaces.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI purchased an old Emac 700mhz G4 with OS 10.3.2. from a local school for my kids. When I install programs EG: a kids game off CD it goes through the install wizard and installs no problem. But when i click on the program Icon to run the game, it wont run it. It seems like it trys to run it as the icon does one bounce down in the tool bar at the bottom of the screen but then it disappears and nothing happens. I really want to get it connected to my wireless network for my kids and it has no internal wireless card so I purchased a Netgear WG111V3 Wifi USB adapter. The same thing happened. It installed the program no worries but will not run the setup wizard to get it working? I click on the icon and same thing happens .. icon bounces once in the toolbar and then nothing?
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy parents have a really old eMac G4 that I am going to have to fix tomorrow. They don't have a word processing program so that is the main question I have. Are there any decent free word processing programs out there? The machine runs 10.3 and here are its specs:
Order no.M8577LL/A
Processor700MHz PowerPC G4
Memory384MB
Hard drive 40GB Ultra ATA
Optical driveCD-RW
Graphics supportNVIDIA GeForce2 MX with 32MB of DDR SDRAM
FireWireTwo ports
USBFive ports
VGA video mirroringYes
Modem56K
Ethernet10/100BASE-T
It used to have AppleWorks on it, but since I've reinstalled 10.3, it's no longer there. (I did a clean install.) Is there an option for it? NeoOffice has a 512mb Ram requirement that isn't going to be met by this machine. Also, the internet runs rather slow on it. They have a 1.5 megabit connection. Would it be better to run it under 10.2?
I completely rebuilt an old G4 Power Mac: Upgraded the system firmware. The problem is that applications like Itunes, Safari, etc, crash, they "Terminate Unexpectedly" after 5 mins or so. I have removed all PCI cards except the ATI Rage 128 Video card and it still happens. So, I have three thoughts:
1) The programs in 10.5 were written to run on Intel, and there is no hope.
2) Some piece of hardware in the G4 is causing the crashing.
3) The Rage 128 is the only original piece of hardware left....could the Rage firmware be causing the problem?
I don't have another MAC video card to try. Is there a way to upgrade the firmware in the Rage 128? I looked all over the net but could not find any.
After install of OSX Lion (from Snow Leopard). I receive every 10 seconds a message: "Cannot open program ExpressAccountsAgent, because PowerPC-programs are no longer supported". I deinstalled this program with Mackeeper, without result. The message shows every 10 seconds. Is it possible to block this message?

We are using a Imac 27" mid 2010, Mac OS Lion. When an email arrives while working in Quark or Photoshop (and other programs) we leave the program and go to mail to read it. On returning to either Quark or Photoshop etc the program has stopped responding requiring a force quit. Mail also seems to be running slower than usual.
