I have purchase a new mini and want to transfer programs from my older MacPro before recycling it. Problem is, it's 4 yrs old and I have run upgrades via downloads and no longer have discs - but then again the new mini doesn't have an optical drive.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently had to upgrade the graphics card in my Mac Pro, however it won't boot up because the OS isn't update which is what is required. I have a G5 which I have put the MacPro hard drive into so that I could boot it up, update the software and put it back in the MacPro. The G5 recognises the hard drive when it is acting as a 2nd Hard drive to the G5's original but it doesn't show it as a startup option. I have tried having just the MacPro drive in the G5 without the original hardrive but then it doesn't boot at all. Both are running 10.5 and I can't understand it won't find it.
I have tried it the other way around, the G5 hard drive in the MacPro and it works fine and when I put the MacPro hard drive in as second Hard Drive it shows up as an option for startup but doesn't work as it isn't uptodate.
1) Can I take my secondary drive in my Powermac G5 and install it into my forthcoming Mac Pro ? Or is the SATA interface different on the new machines.
2) Ordering extra memory from Crucial to save $, what's the situation with 'fans' and things on the memory. I'm confused, totally. Does the mac pro's require additional heat cooling on the memory, does the memory from crucial come with this, is it easy to install like the powermac or am I going to be left floundering like a fish out of water....

View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm having a beast of a time trying to get 10.6 to install on an older mac mini.... The installation proceeds in the usual way - but after about 15 minutes the installation stalls with some sage words to the effect that 'installation failed because support files cannot be copied' - or something to that effect.
I'm thinking one of a number of things could be wrong:
1) The dvd drive is dodgy
2) the SL dvd is dodgy
3) the hard drive is dodgy
My question is this. Does anybody have any idea of what to try ? - I'm thinking along the lines of a minimal SL install, reformat the drive, partition the drive, anything to try and get the minimal set of files on there.... can I try and make a disk image or something ?
Incidentally, when I go to 'customize' the install (uncheck the printer, languages, X11 etc.) - I'm left with the 'greyed out ' Essential system software which shows a size of 8Gb..... but I recently did the same thing on a Macbook and the Essential system files for SL came to a mere 3.5 Gb.... Any idea why this install to the Mac Mini is 8Gb
I've got a big CRT TV that I'd like to connect my new MacBook Pro to occasionally in order to play videos. So what's the easiest/best/cheapest way to do this? Mini Display to DVI to ??? ? Something else? I don't expect much in the way of quality, but it would be nice if it weren't terrible.

I just picked up my new 13 inch 2.26 GHz macbook today and am really happy. But i have a few basic questions and all since i am a new mac user coming from a pc. 1- I have a 500GB western digital elite harddrive that i used to back up all the data from my pc. Now some of these files are over 8GB large. I am confused as to how i can transfer over files. I have heard about different file formats but i am very confused by each. I would love if the hardrive could be used for both mac and pc tho. Does anyone have any insight to this. 2- Are there any free programs i should download. I already have coconut battery, adium, istat pro and iwork.

On my home pc the mail account is not synching up and it appears to be in a continuous recycling mode. I am unable to send any messages. Incoming mail is being received from my other accounts. I am also having problems with my id to y cox account. The system is asking for credentials again I enter them but for some reason it is not working.
So my question is if I can't get it to stop- How can I delete the mail account and then re-state it?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen you get a new OSX machine it asks if you want to transfer everything over from another machine, then you connect the firewire or whichever cable it tells you, and it does the rest.
I am replacing my Mini with a Mini Server (1TB), and on boot it asks if I want to transfer data from another "Server". I was hoping I could transfer from OSX to OSX Server since it's the same OSX just more options are added, I would understand it it didn't go in the other direction.
It gives me a blank window with Transfer Your Server at the top and says to select the volume to transfer from (none listed). It doesn't say how I would connect or select the machine from which to select the volume. Is there any easy way to transfer my programs and files over, or not, between non-server and a server version? I could manually share the HD on the Mini and drag over program and file folders etc. if there is no automatic way.

- apps
- user work/personal data
There is a big external (SATA, RAID1) HD that receives the Time Machine backups... (and contains user files, pictures, ...).
Question:
- Is there a way (eg via Time Machine) to save the whole system HD on the external drive
- Then boot (from? Lion comes from Apple Store)
- And recover everything - apps and settings... - from the external drive?

I'll be fitting my new 09 mac mini internal hard drive hopefully tonight. I want to copy all the information (programs etc) onto my new hard drive before I install it. Whats the best way of going about this? I already have an external caddy, so am I right in thinking I can put the new hard drive into that, connect it up to my mini, format it, install osx, and use migration assistant, or I vaguely remember something called 'cloner' or something similar to that name to copy all the data? That when all the info is copied I can take out the stock hard drive, remove the new drive from the external caddy and place it into the mac mini? Then it should boot up fine?

And, for a little while I've been using a MBP for the same task but I find condition the battery every so often to be a right pain in the rear, especially since it's not my main laptop and it's cells are constantly pumped full most of the time, thus constantly connected to the wall outlet
