PowerPC :: Post Clone Fails To Become Bootable
Dec 6, 2010
I own a PowerMac G4, 1.25GHz. It came with no OS (donated by my local college to my high school and eventually given to me for my services in fixing this and the other 6 PowerMacs, and the 7 iMac G5s), so my IT teacher and I copied OS X 10.4.11 from one like it. That is currently my primary OS. We read online while thinking about upgrading his and mine Apple PCs to 10.5 Leopard, about the system requirements. They all line up [URL]:
- A Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or Power PC G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor
- 512 MB memory or more
- A DVD drive for installation
- 9 GB of available disk space or more
With a 1.25GHz PPC, 2Gb of RAM, and an 80Gb Seagate IDE HDD, I'm all set up, right? On Friday, before the end of the day, I copied OS X 10.5.7 Leopard from an iMac G5 w/ G5 iSight (late 2006 model). We plugged it into his iMac G5, runs like a charm. Plug it into the "test" G4 (exactly like mine, but only one Seagate 80Gb IDE HDD), and it took a while, but it booted. So today, I copied it to my blank Seagate 80Gb, assuming that it would boot like the LaCie External HDD did (yes, that worked too).
It finishes copying, I reboot, hold option, punch in the lock code, and Low AND Behold... No Seagate. Mac OS X 10.4.11. But no Mac OS X 10.5.7. Okay. So I boot back to Tiger and recopy. Try to open a couple programs, they work (Office 2008 Word, Dreamweaver CS3, and iTunes 9.2). No problem. Open System Preferences, choose Leopard as the initial boot device, reboot. Mac starts up, and I get the screen with the little folder that alternates between the question mark and the Finder icon.

I have a mirrored drive door G4 [dual 1.25 GHz] with 10.2.8. I would like to make a bootable clone of this drive on an external hard drive, to use in case this computer fails somehow.I know there is software available to do that. Are there any particular mistakes a person could make in doing this that someone here can identify and explain how to avoid?

I have an old G4 system with Pro Tools recording software and related Plug-Ins installed and running flawlessly. Bad news is that the drive is about 9 yrs old and I want to make a backup before selling it to someone so they can have a bootable backup drive instead of having to re-install the whole system if the internal drive craps out.
The OS is 9.2.2. It is not classic and has no version of OS X on it t all.
How do I make a bootable clone of the whole system discs, apps an all, to an external firewire drive?

I have been a user of SuperDuper! for some time and understand the process of making a bootable clone of my startup drive. The other day, my bootable backup drive crashed. It was an Iomega that had been partitioned and worked fine as a bootable backup until the drive itself failed. The Iomega was a Firewire 400 drive.
When I bought a replacement, I bought a Western Digital FW 800/400, USB 2, eSata connection system. 1 TB. I partitioned it and created a bootable clone with the latest version of SuperDuper! The operation went smoothly until I tried to actually boot from the newly created clone. I could select the clone from the Startup Disk panel, but my Mac refuses to boot from it. It looks, then says, "Hmmm! I think I'll start up from the internal drive." I have another WD FW 400, USB 2.0 drive and it is bootable as well as a LaCie FW 400 that I can make bootable. Only this one drive that has no specific FW 400 port will not boot. I tried it as FW 800, no dice. I connected with the adapter cable to the FW 400 port, no joy.
I can return this WD drive for exchange. My question is should I expect the same results if I exchange it for another drive of the same type? Or is there a chance that a new drive of the same type will work?
PowerMac, dual G5 2 Ghz, OS X 10.4.11. It has a FW 800 port as well as FW 400.

Tried to create a bootable clone using Disk Utility & got this:“Restore Failure, Recovery partition restores can only be done on GPT partition maps.”I may need to purchase Carbon Copy Cloner ($40) or Super Duper ($28).I had been using my free CCC v. 3.4.7 to make clones of OS X 10.6.8 but now I upgraded to OS X 10.9.4 & got message that CCC not compatible with Mavericks unless I buy the CCC v. 3.5.6.I read several places that DU can do back up clones same as CCC or SD!I launched DU from recovery system, selected Mac HD as source & my XHD as destination. Both are formatted Max OS Extended (Journaled)So, what am I doing wrong? Also, what advantages, if any, are there in using CCC or SD instead of the free DU?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), 4 GB RAM, Win XP Pro-Boot Camp

I used Super Duper to create a bootable clone on an external firewire drive.
When I restart my MBP holding down the option key I can choose the external drive. OSX (104.11) starts to load and then encounters a name and password popup. Entering the administrator name and password of the original drive fails. Only one account on the machine - still using the admin password originally chosen.

I am planning to buy a 500GB laptop harddrive, put it in an enclosure, and use CarbonCopyCloner to make a bootable clone of my Mac's internal 500GB Drive. This way, if there is a problem with my internal drive, I can just swap in the cloned drive and boot from that, never missing a step. However, I am wondering if this is a good strategy. What if something else fails on my mac like the motherboard - would I be able to boot my cloned drive on another mac?

I just recently purchased a Macbook, and I created a bootable backup of the system. The macbook boots from the backup, but when I try to boot from the backup on our G5 and also our Powerbook G4 it will not work. The G5 does not even see the bootable partitions I created, and the G4 sees them, but when I select the partition to boot from, the computer just restarts and boots from the Powerbook hardrive. We are having to send the Macbook back for some small power issues, and we need a bootable backup of this sytem that works. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the Macbook is an intel based computer and the Powerbook G4 is not? Also, the macbook is running Snow Leopard, and the Powerbook is on Tiger.

So I have a 1st Gen G5 1.8 Ghz imac. I had a bad power supply and got it fixed under Apple's warranty extension. Since I had it fixed it runs way warmer than it used to. The fans are also always on. Any idea on why this is and what can be done to fix it?

just wanted to see how these machines handle abuse. I don't plan on abusing mine, but I am thinking about giving my brother one, and he is careful, but sometimes slips. I know the aluminum bodies aren't that strong, I've bumped my 12" into my car door, and it got a dent. Now I'm very very careful with it. Anybody else got stories or pics?

I am getting an Ibook G3 from a friend and it is kinda old, I think the HD is about 20gb and i am sure it is running panther. I would at least like it to run tiger, that is what i have in my intel mac mini. Is there a way to clone the HD of my mini and maybe get a slightly bigger HD for the ibook and just use the clone from the mini in the ibook? I dont want to put much money into the ibook as far as buying the os and such because im sure it has or will get the gpu problem sooner or later. I just want to know if it is possible to do this task.

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.
I tried converting it in the terminal with:
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.
I tried the terminal command:
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.
I tried the terminal command:
cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I have a Macbook running on snow leopard and I wanna upgrade my internal hard drive as it is currently too small. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned my entire hard drive to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Now, I have that new internal hard drive from wester digital. What do I do with it? replace the current internal hard drive with the new harddrive and then how do I get the data from the external hard drive with my cloned data to the fresh western digital? Do I boot first from external hard drive etc? I am not sure what to do now?when I was given the option which hard drive to clone (or which part of the hard drive to clone) there was also the option to clone "Install Disk". I don't need to clone that, right?

So I was just there, using my computer, doing nothing out-of-the-ordinary. I decided to open up a program (Yahoo! Instant Messenger, I think it was) and the computer went nuts. I completely froze...nothing I tried worked. So I shut the computer down and tried rebooting it. It chimed and went to the white start-up screen with the apple...I let it sit for about ten minutes to let it restart. Still the white screen. I shut it down and tried it again. Same thing.
Is my computer dead? What might I be able to do to fix it? How much might it cost?

Got a Powerbook G4 with a "messed up" HD. Couldn't fix it, so got a firewire drive and ran a bunch of utilities from my newer intel iMac. Cloned the Powerbook's drive to a USB hard drive, did all repairs on the USB drive, formatted the Powerbook, cloned the USB drive BACK to the Powerbook, but it just gives me the flashing question mark when I try to boot.
What is REALLY weird is I can boot my iMac FROM THE CLONE ON THE USB DRIVE and it works fine.In Drive Genius the Powerbook drive (in TDM) shows as a single drive, but if I go to "Repartition" then it shows 3 smaller partitions on the drive; I believe they're called "Apple Free Space" or something like that (can't check right now, I'm running Repair on it AGAIN at the moment).
I feel like I'm missing something simple, like the machine just doesn't see one thing that tells it "Oh, yeah! There's an operating system on this drive!" I have tried partitioning from Drive Genius and Disk Utility. Have done clones back and forth with Drive Genius, Disk Utility, and Carbon Copy Cloner. Same results each time.

I have: Power PC G5 dual 2.3 w 10.4.11 os, Lost Internet connection. (ethernet cable direct to router), No known cause. Checked router, cable etc. All work fine w other computers etc. router does not "see/read" when cable connected to G5. I figured Ethernet card is dead. Can't afford new card figured I'd try: Net gear G54 wireless USB adapter, just to get back online. Downloaded driver for Mac etc. Went to System Prefernces to set up. Opened System Preferences then Network, Automatically this message drops down: "Your network settings have been changed by another application" When I click "ok" same message automatically drops back down. Cannot access "Network settings" at all.

I've had my 8 core mac pro for a bit over a year now, and it's been a great little box---til now. I live in a fairly humid climate, so I've always pretty much left electronic things on most of the time--they seem to like it. However, over Xmas, I took a trip, and turned all my gear off. When I returned, I pressed the button to start my mac pro---nothing, nada, like it was unplugged still. Being an OK troubleshooter, I started by making sure cables were ok etc. Did a search to find if anyone else had a problem. Then, I looked up how to reset the SMC. Up until the 8 core, there was a button. No more on the Mac Pro 8 core. They said unplug for 15 seconds to reset. No joy there. I had determined to take it to a shop, and decided to try one last time before I put it in, a couple of days later. Voila! It booted. Until the beginning of this week. While I was out, there was a short power failure, and it started the same thing.

Pre Snow Leopard I ran around 65~ processes
Post Snow Leopard, 63 processes
Take in account about 5-10 processes are my own. I thought SL removed a lot of useless processes. I will try a clean install and report back later.

Prior to installation, I made sure to backup my computer using Time Machine (several copies) and updated all pertinent software. I even made sure to repair/verify disks.
Installation went fairly smoothly with the exception of recovering my Itunes music library (which I eventually figured out).
Herein lies the issue. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I have a /library as well as a /library(from old mac). I'm not sure if this is pertinent to my current issue. There are a handful of apps that I simply cannot run anymore. I checked if these were compatible for 10.6 and apparent they are.
Ventrilo is a commonly used program which I can now only open via Terminal. With today's release of Steam, I downloaded the client only to see no response whatsoever when I click on it.

I'm at the point that I am finally needing to upgrade from my old 15" MBP (1,1), and will be jumping to a 13" MBP base model. I know Apple is currently running the promotion with the (up to) $199 MIR with an iPod purchase, but my trusty 160GB Classic is doing a marvelous job as is, so the iPod is relatively frivolous for me at the moment.
The question is whether or not there's a perk to buying now and just selling off an iPod brand new (aka bigger MBP discount), or if they run some different promotion after the current one lapses on the 7th that I might have an interest in. I'd scour my memory to recall if they do any other fall promotions (but it rarely remembers these sales, been nearly four years since I bought my last Mac), and searching has been fruitless (or I'm just using ill-formed queries). In any case, my purchase isn't terribly time-crucial (in the short term), but I'm certainly not waiting until Nov/Dec to pick one up. Does anyone recall if Apple traditionally does some other sort of promotion after the typical "rake in all the college students and give 'em free iPods to clean house" at the start of the school season?

Like Milton without his stapler, I am enduring quite a profound sense of loss, here.
My entire dashboard is literally filled with post-it notes. Or was. When I booted my computer, this morning, I discovered that about half of my notes were totally blank. Thinking a reboot might solve the problem and return to me my precious mini memoranda, I promptly restarted. Wrong move.
Having just booted up once more, I returned to my dashboard to find that only two of my yellow friends contained the precious knowledge they once possessed.

I wasn't sure where else to put this and I know people here have TimeMachine/backup experience. I don't know if this is true after every system software update, but after applying 10.5.6, Time Machine wants to backup 70GB worth of stuff. That's an additional 70GB worth of space taken up on my backup drive. I'm guess that that is all of the file differences because of the update? it so happens that I have a little over 71GB worth of stuff on my drive total. (What can I say, I leave a small footprint and archive a lot off disk). So it basically wants to back up my entire drive all over again. Is this normal? I could nuke the existing backup and just start fresh and not be concerned with losing anything.

When I take a screen shot, it automatically makes it save as a .PNG file with is too big to post on the web in most cases. I was wondering if there's a setting I can adjust to make it default save as a .JPEG image. Thank you!Edit; I thought I remembered being able to do such a thing in Tiger somewhere but now I am running Leopard and can't find anything.

The previous Wireless Alum. Keyboard was model MB167LL/A. The one on Apple's site is now MC184LL/A complete with wiped reviews (I think there is one now).
Is there anything different about it? Maybe an improved BT antenna to go with the theme of the other devices that were updated?
edit: someone beat me to it I suppose, but didn't state it was the wireless so I didn't see it at first. 2 batteries now I suppose.
