View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a friend that was using her Mac SE original from 1990 or so up until year 2004, at which time I insisted she get hooked up on an iMac g3 333mhz -- and I tried to get her an Apple Tech out to NC where she is to put a new hd in that old machine and some memory.
Well she's been running 9.2.2 and now it's time to go to Panther on an iBook 500mhz that I've upgraded with new hd and memory etc.
But I don't have the original set up guide. Yes, I downloaded a "users manual" off Apple but I need the basic booklet that came with the original machine -- or a download of it.
Anyone got one? Also anyone got a good Panther tutorial for someone who barely knows how to use OS9?
I'm a PC guy (unfortunately), and I wanted to get my wife (graphic designer) a Mac present for our 3 year wedding anniversary (maybe a bad choice). As a cheep axx i looked on eBay for best deals... and happen to stumble upon an old G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) Dual 500MHz tower. I understand that is a old model, but the budget constrains gave me a no better choice... $300-400. For the first Apple it is a start.To make it up i got her a 23" Cinema Display.My dilemma as you see is the old vs new technology. I have not yet received the merchandise, but as i read I'm up for a surprise.
1. Do i need a power adapter for the display?
2. Do i need a ADC converter (or something like it)?
3. What (cheep) Graphic card will be a plausible fit to avoid conversions?
4. Will that card work with my motherboard (if there is one inside lol)

Someone I know wants to buy a used Mac pro G5. It has a speed of 1,8 Ghz. I think he's going to use it for music. (logic pro, adium). But he said he was going to use FCS as well. His question was if he could replace the G5 singlecore chip, with a G5 dualcore chip. And if that's possible, could somebody give me extra info about compatibility and such. For example, will it just boot without problems when you replaced it, or do you need to do extra things (drivers, reinstalling the os and such). The G5 will be used in the near future for HD video editing. Also, I know the new intel mac pro have graphic cards from nvidia and ati. But what graphic cards do the G5 towers have? are they good?
View 17 Replies View RelatedAll this talk of 8800GT's on the Mac Pros is putting me in the mood for upgrading the 64mb ATI 9600 in my stock PM g5 dual 2 GHz.I have an old Formac Oxygen ADC monitor (used as one screen of my dual head system) but the ADC connector on the graphics card seems to be dead, and everytime I plug the monitor in to the port, the Mac just keeps 'tripping' out and won't power up - almost like something is shorting out.As a result, I'm stuck to using just the DVI port (1 screen is so limiting after being used to 2!!), connected to an ancient VGA monitor. I really miss having a dual screen set-up, and this is another reason why I would like to upgrade the card. would be good to still be able to use my ADC monitor, but I guess only the older, low spec cards had these, and I'm probably gonna have to ditch the monitor and get a couple of DVI screens.

hi all. i bought an ibook g3 500 with a dvd-rom on ebay recently, and just got it yesterday, and noticed something weird. for some reason it doesn't read cd's. when i put a cd in, the tray pops open a few seconds later. is that normal? dvd's work just fine. i would think that a dvd-rom would be able to read cd's. no?

I just picked up at the swap meet a Qwicksilver Model No.M849 PNG4 1GHZ DP/2M CACHE/512MB SDRAM? 80GB HD DVD-R/CDRW/Nv17 DUAL/56k MDM/GIGE it is missing the HD from under the superdrive can I just plug in the HD from my Sawtooth and run her? She still has the HD in the bottom its a 80 gig IBM Deskstar. When I opened my Sawtooth I found that there is a Seagate Cheetah model#*ST118202LW* Its not even plugged in!!! How many gigs is it and can i run it for more space? I have three 512 cards for memory. Can I use the video card from the sawtooth to run a second monitor? If this all works whats the newest operating system I can run? As soon as I get the money I am going to swap the processor and bring her up to speed. I already put RAM and HDD but the computing power is just not enough. What I want to do is go into OpenFirmware and speed up the cpu and possibly the bus, I remember doing so on my sawtooth but I can't find the code plus that was a G4 and now I have a G3. I also found this page [URL] that shows how to mechanicaly overclock up to 1GHZ but I want to be able to do it non physical if possible. I know this isn't the hot topic now a days but maybe some of you will remember what they used to do and feel some nostalgia(is that a propper word?).

View 6 Replies View RelatedToday I was planning to build in a second harddrive into my old G4 tower. So I did this. But after installing the system won't boot anymore from the OS X Tiger partition. I have tried all sorts of jumper settings, from slave to master to cable select. All without success.
When I boot from the Tiger installation CD diskutility does not even recognize my original master drive nor does it recognize the new slave drive. I even tried to boot from an old OS9 disk to initialize the disk. I tried formatting it in another machine to HFS Journaled, no success in booting mounting the disk whatsoever.
I recently added some extra RAM's but i doubt these are the problem since my machine DOES boot without having the new disk installed in the system.
It is a 60GB Maxtor drive, so it is within the maximum amount of GB's possible for these older machines.

Just installed one of the original airport cards in this machine, and though all indications are that it is working correctly, it doesn't see the USR wireless router sitting 10 feet from it. No networks show up in the dropdown list, and manually adding does nothing. Encryption is a simple MAC filter (this card has already been added), and SSID is broadcast. Did I get a bad card? System profiler seems to think it's fine.
It's an original airport card.
Computer's a G3 400 Mhz iMac.
A G3 300 Mhz iBook with original airport card is having no troubles.
Firmware of Airport card is 9.52
Firware of router is up to date.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have read about this issue before, and I know it is a major problem with this model iBook. When I turn on my iBook nothing shows on the display, just sound, and when it does work, there is just a fuzzy picture. Pressing on the area where the video chip is(left armrest) fixes the issue, but only if I hold it.
Someone said to put something in the case to apply pressure to the video chip, and this worked, but only for a little while before the same thing started happening again. What I need is some repair place that will fix this for cheap, also maybe "clean up" my iBook a bit, it's kind of dirty, missing the bottom bumpers, and missing some screws. What do you think it would cost to get this fixed and cleaned up?
My iBook G4 randomly locks up. No kernel panic message. It is as if there is a pause button that is getting pushed on the screen and when it locks up if it is playing music it plays about 1 second then repeats.it makes it take longer to lock up but it still locks up. I have tried bigger shims and that does not help. If I try to install Leopard on the iBook it doesn't even make it 25% before locking up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLove my 12" PB 1.5ghz. Running Leopard on it. But the memory cap of 1.25gb with 256gb soldered on to the board (and only one memory slot) bugs me. Especially since this is the same logic board that goes into the 12" iBooks last revision that have 512mb soldered on to their boards. (Their memory cap is 1.5gbs and it does make a difference, especially on the 1.42ghz iBooks).I just asked Gary Dailey of Daystar if they could solder a 1 gig chip on the board.. seems like a better "upgrade" than overclocking with Leopard's memory demands Will let MR know if this can be done. If so, i'm in.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just set up an old G4 Mac Mini with a 1.5 GHz PPC chip and 64 MB VRAM as an HTPC with the intent to use it to watch Hulu and ABC.com and other sites where you can stream TV shows online. However, Hulu is very very choppy. The audio's fine but the video is pretty disappointing. In full screen it's really just a series of still pictures. I know Flash on the mini is supposed to not be that great, but is there anything I can do?
Is there any way to change the video settings of the g4 or of the TV to improve the streaming video playback? I'm playing it on a 40" Samsung LCD connected via DVI--> HDMI.
I'm booting off an external firewire drive through Firewire 400 and my concern is that perhaps this is the problem - the slowdown is not coming from the processor or the VRAM but rather from the Firewire. Can anyone with a similar setup let me know if this works for them. Is there anyway to speed up the I/O between the G4 and the Firewire drive? it's a LaCie 250GB D2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface.
According to the Activity Monitor, Safari's using 72% of the CPU to play from Hulu. According to Hulu's support page, the Mac Mini meets the system requirements. I'm just trying to watch the SD videos, not the HD. I have Flash 10 and Safari 3.1.2.
My former, babied, 400mhz overclocked by Daystar to 550mhz Titanium Powerbook has a fried logic board. Can I put a the old low resolution Tibook screen on a 1ghz Tibook body with a higher resolution screen?

I picked up some MDDs(dual 1.25 & FW800 1ghz) with bad power supplies and eying up another MDD(Dual 867) which is working. Will the dual 1.25 and single 1ghz processor daughter card work on the previous model? I know the System clock is different and heard about removing a resister on the first gens to 167mhz FSB. I will also try and transplant the PSU too to check to see if my 2 MDDs fully work or not.

I use dual Apple LED 27" monitors.I'm about to order the 5870 graphics card upgrade from Apple, but before I do, is it possible to run TWO 5870 graphics cards? I am running into conflicting information and trying to get a definitive answer. If yes, do I need additional power cables and if so, which ones?
Alternatively, I've read the 5970 card is essentially two 5870 GPUs on one chip.Will this be a better solution?I also want the cards to be drop and play ready/natively supported. As I rely on this computer for business, I'm not interested in continually chasing down third-party drivers.
