I've got a friend that was using her Mac SE original from 1990 or so up until year 2004, at which time I insisted she get hooked up on an iMac g3 333mhz -- and I tried to get her an Apple Tech out to NC where she is to put a new hd in that old machine and some memory.
Well she's been running 9.2.2 and now it's time to go to Panther on an iBook 500mhz that I've upgraded with new hd and memory etc.
But I don't have the original set up guide. Yes, I downloaded a "users manual" off Apple but I need the basic booklet that came with the original machine -- or a download of it.
Anyone got one? Also anyone got a good Panther tutorial for someone who barely knows how to use OS9?
I want to do this to increase the speed of my sawtooth. I think that the dual 500mhz was the last apple processor that is compatible with the sawtooth because they both run on 100mhz busses, correct?
I found one on craigslist for $15 but want to make sure it will work, or if I do get it and try to install it I want to make sure I don't break my computer.
hi all. i bought an ibook g3 500 with a dvd-rom on ebay recently, and just got it yesterday, and noticed something weird. for some reason it doesn't read cd's. when i put a cd in, the tray pops open a few seconds later. is that normal? dvd's work just fine. i would think that a dvd-rom would be able to read cd's. no?
I'm a PC guy (unfortunately), and I wanted to get my wife (graphic designer) a Mac present for our 3 year wedding anniversary (maybe a bad choice). As a cheep axx i looked on eBay for best deals... and happen to stumble upon an old G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) Dual 500MHz tower. I understand that is a old model, but the budget constrains gave me a no better choice... $300-400. For the first Apple it is a start.To make it up i got her a 23" Cinema Display.My dilemma as you see is the old vs new technology. I have not yet received the merchandise, but as i read I'm up for a surprise.
1. Do i need a power adapter for the display? 2. Do i need a ADC converter (or something like it)? 3. What (cheep) Graphic card will be a plausible fit to avoid conversions? 4. Will that card work with my motherboard (if there is one inside lol)

I would like to use the machine to do powerpoints at our church. I want to use the internal monitor and an external monitor (projector) to do the powerpoints. I want it to work like the my iBook with the screen spanning hack installed.
if not then i will probably end up using a g3 desktop instead.
my home-country local MAC forum cannot resolve. The thing is,that I did a bit of overclocking on my G3 DUAL USB 500MHZ IBOOK.I overclocked FSB bus to 100MHZ and CPU speed to 600MHZ.But after that,my IBOOK wouldn't recognize internal HDD.Laptop itself works just fine, it boots from OSX Panther CD and so on,but OSX install JUST WON'T SHOW ME ANY HARD DRIVE WHERE TO INSTALL ITSELF ON TO.As you know... CD and HDD are connected via the same cable to the motherboard and CD works fine.I thought that maybe the part of the cable which was connected to the hdd was broken,so I changed the hole cable.Nothing happened,everything was still the same.I have tested HDD in other computer and it works fine.Also I have tried 2 different HDD-s in Ibook- still the same.I have also tried to reset everything I can> power managment reset (through that button) and reset via functsion+option+p+r (on keyboard...or smth. like that) My smartness has run out.What shall I do?
I should mention that if I don't but any OS cd into the CD-DRIVE,then I get flashing folder with question-mark on my screen.
Anyway,I think that the problem might be related to hdd partitions.I deleted my original OSX partition right after I got overclocked laptop back (because OSX install didn't recognized it) and then changed HDD-s partition to FAT32.(I thought that maybe OSX partition had been damaged during the overclocking process) But maybe the problem was still the cable (right in the beginning) and now OSX install wouldn't recognize my hdd, because it's in FAT32 format? Other thing what makes me think about that: as I told,if there is no CD in CD-DRIVE IBook shows blinking question mark with a folder on its screen.But yesterday I managed to delete hdd's FAT32 partition and replace it with HSF+. (in other laptop and in Windows XP) And when I but that hdd with HSF+ back to my IBOOK one change occured.Now, if it is turned on without OSX CD in it's CD-DRIVE, it shows on screen at first big globe and after a while blinking question mark with a folder.Therefore I assume,that the problem cannot be in hardware,because if I changed HDD partion type, then something else also changed?? Anyway OSX install still didn't show any HDD. What I have to do?? Could FSB upgrade be the key to that problem? (I don't want to believe it,because I read,that if overclocked,IBOOK would work fine, or it would crash- nothing related to the hdd.)
I'm finally upgrading my iBook, but I'm slightly confused on which type of RAM to buy. According to my System profiler, I would need SO-DIMM SDRAM type with PC133 speed. I can find the SO-DIMM SDRAM, but the speeds are not matching (PC2700 and PC5300).
I did a thread search and could find lots of instances of an ibook not seeing or using the battery, but I seem to have the opposite problem. I have an ibook g3 700mhz (dual usb). It will only boot and run off the battery. It will not boot or run if it is only plugged in (dead battery or no battery = no running or booting). When plugged into a 45W white charger (that works on other ibooks of the same ilk), it will be green without battery and orange when the battery is in. It will not charge a battery. I've tried:
two other dc-in boards and cables known to work in other ibooks two different batteries (that charge in another machine) PMU reset (the light on the charger changes to green for 3 seconds, seemingly indicating the reset was done correctly)
for fun I put in a hard drive that worked in another machine and added ram that works in another machine all to no avail. What the heck is going on?
I bought an iBook G3 (all white_ from someone and the charger if messed up and will not work. It will work once in a blue moon and turn orange for half an hour. As such, no iBook usage except for ten minutes X_X. I would really like to get a new charger so I can give to my mum. if those new things they sell in CompUSA for mac laptops will work?
I installed more ram in my ibook g3 dual usb today and when i put the keyboard back in the middle of the keyboard between f5 and f6 the numlock light is poking up in the air. It buckling right their , is that normal?
I have an iBook G3 Dual USB with 256MB of RAM currently (128 on LB, and 128 in the user accessible slot under the keyboard). I bought a 512MB chip on eBay that meets the exact specs of the required RAM (512MB PC133 SDRAM SODIMM 3.3V) but when I insert it into the RAM slot and turn on the iBook, it says in About This Mac that I only have 128MB of RAM. what I can do, or is the chip possibly not compatible with Apple?
I have been viewing the forums for the past few months and have finally joined MacRumors as I have purchased an ibook G3 (first mac). I love it to death, it is so portable and even runs like a champ considering it is almost 4 years old. The ibook has a 800MHZ G3 processor along with maxed out ram at 640MB. Anyway I am planing on buying an TV before school starts up again and would like to encode my dvds to h.264. I was wondering if my computer can handle this task. BTW I would need to buy a dvd drive for my computer along with an external HDD. My other option is to buy a friends Powermac G4 with dual 1GHZ processors(he is selling it at $250) it already has a dvd drive and two 200GB HDD so that will save me ~ 150. As I am new to macs and would like to know if the Powermac will significantly make a difference in encoding times or should I just stick with my ibook and save the $100?
What would cause a Ibook to just randomly make the fans run so high that it sounds like a vacuum or an xbox 360. All the sound is comming from the back port by the lcd screen.

I had the brilliant idea of trying a clean install of OS X on my circa 2002 iBook. I had Tiger on there, but the iBook was quite sluggish and I was getting frustrated with the performance of the iBook on the only thing that I wanted it to use it for: the internet. So I thought that if I wiped the hard drive and installed OS X again, I could benefit from erasing an accumulation of junk on the iBook. (One thing to note is that the hard drive is actually from a clamshell iBook. The hard drive stopped working a few years ago, and I spent a weekend replacing the drive)
The combo drive has long since stopped working on the iBook, so I hooked up the iBook to my MacBook via firewire and erased the hard drive. But like an idiot I installed 10.5 instead of 10.4 and now the iBook only returns the folder with the question mark. I have not had any luck (either before the ill advised OS X install or before) with doing a remote install. I have the original disks that came with the iBook (10.1), but when I try to install them using the MacBook's drive it just tells me that I can't install it on my MacBook, which is not what I want to do.

I am looking at my 24 inch LED and wondering how one might configure a dual monitor setup with two of these. The single cable is too short for any arrangement but CPU directly behind the monitors. Not enough length to get both to the floor under my desk or with the CPU to the side of one.
how to setup dual monitors. I have a 2009 Mac Pro with a ATI Radeon HD 4870. I dont see the options in the Display settings. Also I I get nothing on the second monitor?
I�m looking to setup another monitor for my 07-08 iMac, I have tried searching and googling for an answer but don�t seem to have had much luck, so I have got a few questions.
1. Is my iMac even able to support dual monitors?
2. If so how would I go about this?
3. Will just any monitor work or has to be a certain type?
I am looking to run a dual monitor setup with my mac mini. Can someone point me in the right direction on what is needed (if anything). Both monitors are brand new, but neither have hdmi.
I have been running my macbook pro open, with a single monitor running beside it. I have come to the conclusion that I would benefit from two large monitors while working at home.
I know I need to buy the dualhead2go DP edition, but what Im not sure about is the cables I need to hook up to my monitors. I haven't yet decided what two monitors I am going to hook up to it, although they will be exactly the same and have HDMI connections.
What I am planning on doing is Getting the Dual Head 2 go, along with 2 DisplayPort to HDMI converters, and 2 HDMI cables, Correct me if Im wrong, but this should work?
Also, If anyone is currently using a dual head to go, how is the performance? I wont be doing any gaming, so that is not an issue, but for day to day tasks I assume everything will run fine? Im running the 330 in my 15' MBP.
Since I'm experiencing some issues with my current setup (4870+GT120) I'd like to hear if the new cards work on 10.6.5 with at least two displays connected to it, and one of them in portrait mode. Ideally someone with three screens connected to a single card and two of them in portrait (on the DP outputs).
I need a bit of insight as to how to maximize the performance (and if there is any) with dual display setups on both my MP1,1 and 5,1.
First off, MP 5,1. Currently I'm running a 30" ACD off a DVI and 23" of a MDP to DVI on a 5870. The 30" is my main work display - the 23" is pretty much running trivial things, like browsers, finder, iTunes, etc. Since VRAM is being split between the two displays, would I benefit from installing a second video card to just run the 23" monitor and dedicate the 5870 to just run the 30" ACD? If yes, what should I use? I have an old 7300, but If there's anything better out there that's non cable powered, I'll get it. Also, there are times (rarely) when I need to run Windows 7-64bit to do some 3d CAD work - would having video cards from different vendors (hence different drivers) cause W7 to go nuts (conflicts, etc)? I can live with just the 30" on W7. I want to get get the most out of 5870 and 30" ACD while not running into conflicts under OS X by introducing another video card.
Second, MP 1,1. It's windows 7 64-bit machine only. I have OS X installed, but since I use it for work I never boot into it. It's running a 27" display (1920x1200) on DVI and 23" (1680X1050) on MDP to DVI adapter. Again, the bigger display is my work area, and the smaller one runs browsers, outlook, etc. I do 3d CAD work, so more VRAM I dedicate to my main display, better it is. So back to my original question...what are my options? I do have that 7300 hanging around, but, again, I'm not so thrilled on mixing video card vendors and drivers. Should I just get some sort of low grade Windows based ATI Radeon card (don't care much of OS X on that machine).
Just ordered a 17" MBP and am looking to use a dual monitor setup with an HPw22. I've tried to do some research on my own but am still unsure about what adapter I should go with as this is my first time attempting to run a dual monitor setup. I was just wondering what someone who is a bit more knowledgeable about this would recommend getting adapter wise. Can I go with either the Mini DisplayPort to VGA or Mini DisplayPort to DVI since my monitor has both? Is their an advantage to one over the other?
I have a new 2010 MBP and I'd like to hook up two external monitors to it, more specifically, two ASUS VW246H 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitors. Either via HDMI or DVI connections. I've found various usb monitor adapters, but i've read that many can't quite 'keep up' and I really can't seem to find a solid solution out there. So does anyone have a dual monitor setup they currently use, if so, what are you using to connect the mini display port to both external monitors.
