PowerPC :: Ibook With Bad Video Chip?
Jan 13, 2008I got this computer off my brother who tried to fix the video problem but was unsuccessful. I would like to set this computer up as a storage/media server.
1. How do I change some the preferences with-out the monitor. (I have ARD and I would like to set it up on this computer.)
I tried to install a ARD client package through TDM but it does not seem to work. ARD does not see the computer on my network so I connected the ibook to my Macbook Pro via ethernet cable and ARD saw it but was unable to connect it.
PowerPC :: IBook G3 Video Chip Not Working?
Apr 18, 2008I have read about this issue before, and I know it is a major problem with this model iBook. When I turn on my iBook nothing shows on the display, just sound, and when it does work, there is just a fuzzy picture. Pressing on the area where the video chip is(left armrest) fixes the issue, but only if I hold it.
Someone said to put something in the case to apply pressure to the video chip, and this worked, but only for a little while before the same thing started happening again. What I need is some repair place that will fix this for cheap, also maybe "clean up" my iBook a bit, it's kind of dirty, missing the bottom bumpers, and missing some screws. What do you think it would cost to get this fixed and cleaned up?

I've seen the "Install Leopard on Unsupported Macs Guide", but you need a DVD burner for that I don't have one Also I would rather not go through all that Terminal stuff to do it.

Jan 25, 2010I was wondering what is the max memory that I can put on my iBook G4. My G4 (12 inch) has 128 MB DDR SDRAM soldered in place and has a 800 MHz PowerPC G4 Processor. I was wondering what is the most memory I could install and what is recommended? Also I am only running Mac OS X Version 10.4.11. Is it possible for me to update to 10.5 or higher? Sometimes when running videos on google video or youtube it gets choppy and lags what fixes this problem. A message pops up about quicktime not up to date but I try and do a software update and it says that my software is up to date could this be because of the older software?

PowerPC :: IBook - Available Memory Expansion Slots
Aug 4, 2007The other day, I put more ram into 2 12-inch ibooks - my own 1.0 ghz, and my wife's 1.33 ghz (Yes, I know she has the faster machine. It means I'm the next to upgrade). Anyway, this is the first time I had opened them up at all and I saw something that confused me: I know that ibooks have only one available expansion slot for ram. That's what I saw on mine. But on my wife's, it looked like there was a second slot lower down, just below where I installed the ram, but missing the clips to hold the ram in place.
Is this in fact a second ram expansion slot, or is it just the shape of it that makes it appear to be one, or is it a second slot that is somehow unsupported or unable to be used? My guess is that it's just the shape of the hardware, and it only appears to be a second ram slot, but isn't really. But wouldn't it be sweet if there was in fact another usable slot in the ibook?

Mar 8, 2008Can you add memory to an iBook G4. And can the new AirPort extreme card be installed in the same computer. It has an AirPort Extreme but I don't think its the newest one.

Feb 26, 2009I have a 1.33gh 14" ibook that Im selling so Im trying to reinstall leopard. so I put in the disk load it up everything is fine until it actually starts installing.. it gets about 10-20% and the says Install failed could not validate "Essentials" package. then I tried again and let it check the disc prior to installing and it tells me to clean disk from scatches and dust. i noticed there were a couple small scratches on the disk so i got another install disk but when i try to put it in, the ibook just spits it back out after a few seconds and i cannot load the installer with the new disk

I'm purchasing OSX panther complete installion discs because I want to update it and add more memory. Nov 9, 2008I have an iBook G4 1.33 14". The computer all the sudden wont boot anymore and the file/smiley blinks. I tried the Apple Hardware Test CD and got the Invalid Memory Access Error:%SRRO: 00032ed8 %SRR1: 0003030
I tried to boot from the startup CD and once the CD kicked in the screen froze, and other times it says the computer needs to be restated.I removed the ram under the keyboard and still got the same error. I also Zapped the PRAM, Reset the PMU and still no luck.Any suggestions? I love this Mac and currently can't go out and buy a new one.
PowerPC :: Installing Tiger On G3 IBook
Oct 20, 2007I have a G3 iBook, 600MHz, 2 USB slots, 1 firewire slot, DVD ROM/CDRW with 640Mb. I bought a Tiger DVD which on the front says: "Mac OS X Tiger. Includes Xcode 2. Install DVD. Version 10.4.6." It came as new, inside a Mac OS X box (no grey installation discs - just 1 black DVD). But...it won't install on my iBook. In fact, it won't even mount on my desktop! I've tried holding "C" on startup but that won't help. Incidentally, I can't repair permissions (I just get "No valid packages (-9997)") but that seems to be the only thing going on with my Mac! Any ideas to get this show on the road?

Sep 12, 2008i attempted to install leopard with firewire through my mac mini, yet it get to the install menu and says: leopard cannot be installed on this machine. it is the two leopard discs that came with my mac mini intel c2d. I also have a powermac g3 i could run firewire out of if necessary. I dont know if it is the discs because i used the restore disc from a powermac g4 to upgrade this ibook to tiger.

Jul 20, 2006My RAM I ordered for my iBook 1.42ghz came in today. I'm trying to install it, but I can't seem to get the brackets to snap. I can get it in so it feels pretty secure, but only the bracket on the left side (when viewing from the USB-port side of the iBook) is clicking in place.

Aug 15, 2007so my boss' ibook g3 just broke, he brought it to apple and they said it needs a new hard drive and were going to charge him something like 400 dollars to replace it. He decided not to do it because it's so old. (not sure how old, but it's a white g3 with a cd tray). Anyway, i told him i should be able to do it. I've found directions online on ifixit and stuff but need a few more questions answered.
1. Will any 2.5 inch hard drive fit? I think i'm going for 5400 rpms because i don't want it to get too hot and he wants 80 gb. how is this one? [URL]
2. How will i run the os once it is installed? Do i need to installl 10.0 first and then move up? Can i install from the cd or do i need to do it from another computer via target disk mode?
3. ifixit suggests i get a "spudger" which i guess it a plastic anti static toothpic type thing to remove hard to get parts. Definitely needed or no? I have a set of small screw drivers that i've used for my powerbook that i thik should be fine.
4. Any tips at all you wanna throw at me.

The game will let you start to install and then at the end it will stop and tell you errors are found. It makes you then start over. the kids games are dual pc/mac. min reqm't is OS X 10.3.2 or later.

Jan 16, 2009I bought an ibook a little while ago because I wanted a small, simple notebook and I love my home iMac. I found one for a good price on eBay and when it arrived everything seemed ok. I wanted to re-install the OS and set everything to my specifications because I was having a little trouble with some of the apps. Anyway, I went through the lengthy re-install and just as it finished counting down the seconds to completion, it shut down. I thought it might be in sleep mode because the little white light was on, so I hit a key and the light went off but nothing happened. Nothing on the screen, no HD noise, nothing. I'm at a loss because I really don't know much at all about hardware or software, which is why I liked the user-friendly Mac so much. The only thing that tells me it's getting power is the little green light at the power connector. I tried a PMU reset (there's no reset button on my model so it was a button combo of shift-ctrl-option-power I think) but that didn't do anything.

Jul 21, 2010I am pretty new to mac so a little unsure about the issue at hand. I bought an ibook without an OS installed. So I put in a setup CD but cant get it to load by holding C. This initially made me question the CD. But I then realised I wasn't able to eject it by holding fn and f12. Also the caps light wouldn't toggle on and off when I hit it, though I am unsure if this light works when there is no OS installed. My question is: is the keyboard not working?

Jul 4, 20103yr old black MacBook has bad memory slot. Will not boot with chip installed. Tried swapping chips and slot 1 or 2 and its the slot. So at least computer works. What are the odds 2nd slot will fail? Is that rare? Is it just a bad solder connection on main board for memory terminal? Or some tiny hidden board trace or other hard to find component?

May 29, 2009i didnt have much to do a couple days ago so i thought i'd install Cheetah on my iBook G4, turned out to be harder than i thought. For some reason it doesnt boot any os prior to Tiger, so I installed Tiger and copied an image of the Tiger OS with the OS 9.2 (i think you have to have it on the system to install prior OS's). So i did that and when i pop the Cheetah cd in it loads and opens OS 9.2 but then it says: "This Application Does Not Run In The Classic Environment - To Install Mac OS X, start up your computer from the Mac OS X CD." Which i did but still doesnt load. I still have an old PowerBook G3 and installed Cheetah on it, then i removed its hd, and created a new sparse image from it. Then i booted up Tiger on the ibook g4 and restored from the image, all went fine, i selected the correct boot device and even repaired permissions but still it doesnt want to boot up Cheetah on the iBook!

Dec 8, 2009I had the brilliant idea of trying a clean install of OS X on my circa 2002 iBook. I had Tiger on there, but the iBook was quite sluggish and I was getting frustrated with the performance of the iBook on the only thing that I wanted it to use it for: the internet. So I thought that if I wiped the hard drive and installed OS X again, I could benefit from erasing an accumulation of junk on the iBook. (One thing to note is that the hard drive is actually from a clamshell iBook. The hard drive stopped working a few years ago, and I spent a weekend replacing the drive)
The combo drive has long since stopped working on the iBook, so I hooked up the iBook to my MacBook via firewire and erased the hard drive. But like an idiot I installed 10.5 instead of 10.4 and now the iBook only returns the folder with the question mark. I have not had any luck (either before the ill advised OS X install or before) with doing a remote install. I have the original disks that came with the iBook (10.1), but when I try to install them using the MacBook's drive it just tells me that I can't install it on my MacBook, which is not what I want to do.

Feb 21, 2009My iBook G4 randomly locks up. No kernel panic message. It is as if there is a pause button that is getting pushed on the screen and when it locks up if it is playing music it plays about 1 second then repeats.it makes it take longer to lock up but it still locks up. I have tried bigger shims and that does not help. If I try to install Leopard on the iBook it doesn't even make it 25% before locking up.

Oct 5, 2008Love my 12" PB 1.5ghz. Running Leopard on it. But the memory cap of 1.25gb with 256gb soldered on to the board (and only one memory slot) bugs me. Especially since this is the same logic board that goes into the 12" iBooks last revision that have 512mb soldered on to their boards. (Their memory cap is 1.5gbs and it does make a difference, especially on the 1.42ghz iBooks).I just asked Gary Dailey of Daystar if they could solder a 1 gig chip on the board.. seems like a better "upgrade" than overclocking with Leopard's memory demands Will let MR know if this can be done. If so, i'm in.

Jun 23, 2009Someone I know wants to buy a used Mac pro G5. It has a speed of 1,8 Ghz. I think he's going to use it for music. (logic pro, adium). But he said he was going to use FCS as well. His question was if he could replace the G5 singlecore chip, with a G5 dualcore chip. And if that's possible, could somebody give me extra info about compatibility and such. For example, will it just boot without problems when you replaced it, or do you need to do extra things (drivers, reinstalling the os and such). The G5 will be used in the near future for HD video editing. Also, I know the new intel mac pro have graphic cards from nvidia and ati. But what graphic cards do the G5 towers have? are they good?

I know the slower chip is compatible so I'm just wondering about the difference in performance. I can get it at half the price of the normal, slightly faster chip.
