PowerPC :: Replacing Bottom Case Of IBook G3

Aug 18, 2006

I went through all the steps to change the optical drive on an old 500 MHz iBook G3, but am unable to attach the bottom case. The problem is the two long (20mm) screws near the back of the computer -- each apparently has to insert into something that looks like a gold-colored nut with serrated edges, like gears, otherwise the screws just rotate in place and don't "lock up." I'll attach a picture, but my only digital camera until I borrow one from a friend is my cell phone, so the pic won't be too good. The gold pieces fell out during the disassembly process and I can't figure out where they now go.

MacBook Pro :: Replacing The Bottom Case - Get Exact Part Number?

Jul 29, 2009

I am needing to replace the bottom case of my late 2006 MBP. It has a large dent in it that is causing some problems. My question is, do I need to get the exact part number listed on the bottom of my laptop (A1211) or can I get a bottom from any pre-unibody MBP i.e. A1260? Also, has anyone ever replaced this part? How difficult is it? I have experience working on laptops, I've just never taken a mac this much apart.

PowerPC :: Replacing Case On G5?

Dec 19, 2010

So recently I found a cheap powermac G5 on ebay and won the deal and all, but when the computer arrived it was horribly dented. It was packed with on piece of under a 1/2" Styrofoam. In the end I got a full refund for the computer and the seller just said that I could keep it if I want it. So I wanted the thing on my desk so I went ahead and bought another case for it. Now here's the question, has anyone done this or knows how to do this? I want to keep all of the internals inside for it not to become a month or so long project in my spare time. I am not sure on a tool that would let me get up into the edges. If you want to see some video of the unboxing of the case and at the end some footage of the dented one and how bad it is go here.

PowerPC :: DIY Replacing DC-in Board On Ibook G4

May 10, 2009

After spending a lot of time troubleshooting and researching to figure out what's wrong with my ibook I concluded to about 90% certainty that I need to replace the DC-in board. I ordered and received a replacement - and the necessary screwdrivers, etc - from ifixit, only now I find myself just staring at the laptop like I'm about to perform open heart surgery.

My questions are:

Is doing this myself high risk for someone who has never so much as seen the inside of a computer?

Roughly how long should this take me to do? I don't want to start it without some sense of the time commitment involved because I'd rather do it all in one sitting.

And lastly, from what I've seen in guides/tutorials it looks as though there's some prying involved in removing the casing and I'm wondering just how much finesse is required in closing it back up. Does it snap back in easily?

MacBook :: How Hard Is It To Change The Top Case And Bottom Case On One Of The Older Macbooks??

Oct 26, 2009

I was wanting to know how hard it is to change top and bottom case and keyboard area? I would like to know that if anything was to happen to my soon to have macbook I could change it. Also this on the older macbooks. And if I have Apple to change it how much would it cost? And yes I know that they should replace keyboard case area for free because of the defunct cracking issue.

PowerPC :: Replacing IBook G4 Power Cord

Jul 23, 2010

The cord on the 45w power brick for my iBook G4 has frayed and is no longer usable. I am considering removing the jack from the iBook cord and splicing it onto a 45w yo-yo-style cord (originally used with a 1400) that I have. Are there any issues associated with this of which I should be aware? I want to resolve my problem, but do not want to break my computer in the process, of course.

PowerPC :: Replacing Power Supply Board On IBook 12" G4

Dec 16, 2008

I've been lurking for the last 12 months but haven't posted until now. Does anyone know if it's possible to purchase a new PCB and lead for the power input. My youngest kid pulled my mac off the sofa and it landed right on the input which knackered up the lead forcing me to buy a cheap chinese job. I've taken the cover off and pulled out the small PCB to inspect it and it did have a cracked solder. I fixed that but the connection is still very fussy, I can't move the mac much or it will switch off (dead battery too). While I'd love to go out and buy a brand new macbook I simply can't afford it right now so patching up this one is my only choice. It needs ram, new battery, proper lead and power supply PCB. All easy to find except the PCB.

PowerPC :: Replacing Logic Board On 933MHz IBook G4 (14")

Jul 17, 2009

I have an old iBook G4 with a dead logic board, everything works fine for about 10-15 minutes, then the display stops responding. The hard drive continues to spin, processor still chugs, etc. I'm going to leave it running iTunes in a few minutes and when it freezes, hit the space bar to see if the actual machine still responds. (In which case I would be sure that it's the video card, or some cable in that area.)

My question: I'm looking on eBay for replacement logic boards, and I'm wondering how specific/universal they are. Obviously, it needs to come from a 14" iBook, but does it matter what processor speed? Eg. Will a board from a 1.2GHz iBook work? I have the iFixIt guide, and I'm not too worried about wrecking the thing, so it's just a matter of making sure I get the right part. (How about this one: Linkety ?)

PowerPC :: Accessing IBook Drive In External Case

Jun 9, 2007

So a friends girlfriend tossed, as in threw, her older ibook g4. You ask why? Well she was mad at it so she punched the screen and it cracked, so she gave it a quick toss because the screen cracked. So I get to be the one to try to salvage the harddrive. I have the ibook torn apart, my macbook, a macmini and an external usb IDE harddrive enclosure at my disposal.

So I tried to target it through my macbook by holding down T and booting up the ibook. Hard drive clicks and spins, but nothing mounts on my macbook. So I bought an external USB for the ibook harddrive. My macbook won't see it when connected. So does this mean a bad drive? Do the older drives have to be connected by firewire?

MacBook :: Replacing The Bottom Cover

Jun 22, 2009

My girlfriend's MacBook has some deep scratches on the bottom that a polish kit would not fix. I wanted to buy a new bottom cover and replace it for her. I have found quite a few on eBay, but I am not sure on which model will fit. She has the new white NVIDIA MacBook. I assume that because the motherboard is different, would she need a case specific for the NVIDIA model, or will an older Core 2 Duo case work all the same?

MacBook :: How Many Times Do They Fix A Cracked Top Case Before Replacing The Machine

Jul 26, 2010

i've had my top case replaced three times already and it's broke again. it only takes a day or two to get it replaced at my local authorised repair centre, but is it worth ringing apple and trying to get the machine replaced? i mean, there's no point in replacing the machine with the same model because it'll just happen again, but i can't imagine apple giving out one of the new machines though.

for reference its a 2.2GHz white macbook bought in november 2007 and the top case was replaced the first time around jan/feb 2008, and then twice in 2010. obviously the applecare runs out in november of this year so want to get this sorted out asap.

MacBook Pro :: Does Replacing The Bottom Plate Of The Body Cost?

Jun 15, 2012

I am wondering if anyone knows what Apple charges to have the bottom plate of the MacBook Pro replaced. When I was at a store, an employee told me that it "might cost, like, uh, forty bucks," in a way that made me think he was just pulling that price out of his you-know-what. After searching eBay for that part and finding no auctions for less than $100, I assumed that Apple would charge something more like that.

It's really irritating that in order to replace two of my footpads, I must replace the whole bottom plate of the body. Apple is really trying to get people to buy the service plan, and then a new laptop when that runs out. Great for the environment. The whole unrepairable Retina Display MacBook debacle is just more proof of that.

Mac Pro :: Replacing Sata Wires For Bottom Hard Disk Drive Bay

Jan 5, 2009

I have a 2005 G5 and my Bottom bay HD wires are busted. I need to obviously buy new ones but the problem is I can't figure out where the wires go, I can find the smaller wire, but not the bigger power wire (i think its the power). When I open up the G5 it looks like the big wire goes behind the board (and I really dont want to take the whole thing apart!). Does anyone have a picture explaining where all the wires go in a 2005 G5. I have goggled it, but just internal pics and simple explanations come up, I am looking for something more complicated so I know where the bottom bay wires go to.If anyone has switched out the wires before please let me know, cause this is nuts. They make everything else in the G5 easy to do but this. ( This all happened because I shipped it and the wires snapped on my bottom drive)

MacBook :: Lid Wont Flush With Bottom Case

Nov 18, 2009

So I bought a refurb nvidia White MacBook a couple weeks ago and one of the problems I have noticed is that the screen is not flush with the bottom case when closed. The problem is worse on the right side than the left (near the indicator light).

I know that with refurbs you risk getting a slightly less than perfect computer. However, I don't want this problem to get worse. When I first got it I didn't really care but now I'm thinking of the future and of the "what if it gets worse" scenario where I take it in and they think I physically damaged it by accident.

MacBook :: Quite A Lot Of Hairline Cracks Around The Speakers On The Bottom Case?

Dec 20, 2010

I have a mid 2009 macbook (nvidia 9400 version) and i have recently noticed that there is quite a lot of hairline cracks around the speakers on the bottom case, and the screen bezel has actually split at the bottom, and the last couple of weeks the screen has been creaking, i originally thought the creaking might be related to the cracks but it seems to be coming from the actual screen its self.

I know that apple repair out of warranty for cracks on the palm rest, but that area of my macbook is in perfect condition so i'm not sure where i stand here, how much would it cost to have all the casing replaced e.t.c do you think?

Will apple help me even though I have no applecare? This seems like a manufacturer's defect to me, but i was hoping macrumors' collective knowledge would have a scenario or someone has been through this before. I'm getting pics ASAP!

The bottom half of the case (section with USB ports, bottom of the MacBook etc) still has cracks in it and clearly hasn't been replaced. PowerPC :: Cracked Lcd - Replacing PB G4 12" LCD?

Jul 24, 2006

So what I thought would be a quick fix on my PB 12" Aluminum (867Mhz) has given me days of frustration. After I cracked the LCD on my PB G4 12" Alluminum (Model A1010), I tried find my way around shelling out $350 for a new lcd. The original LCD was a Samsung LTN121XJ-L01. After surfing Ebay for a while, I mangaged to find a completely new Samsung LTN121XJ-L02, which is essentially the same LCD with a different suffix (L02 instead of L01). I assumed that this would not matter at all since the LCDs are identical, but after swapping out the old cracked LCD for the new one I was completely bummed to see that new LCD dead at birth. I get no response from the LCD, unless I hook up the backlight wires of the new LCD to the old inveter and then connect the LCD flexcable to the old, broken LCD. When I do this, the backlight functions and the new LCD turns grey with no image. I've already reset the PMU, PRAM and NVRAM. I don't know what else I can do. Is this LCD completely incompatible with the old one? I don't see why it wouldn't be.
