I have a powerbook G4 with a broken screen that I recently got from a friend. It works with an external monitor but when I put in the restore disk the laptop tries to use the laptop screen. How can I get it to output to the external monitor when I put the recovery disk in so I can reinstall OSX?
View 3 RepliesSo I recently decided to attempt to revive my "broken" macbook. The two major problems with it is 1. There is zero battery life. I mean if I unplug it it dies. 2. The disc drive simply does not work. It will accept discs but will not read them. The other major problem is that vista is the only operating system on the computer, because I used to use it as a ventrilo server, and as a WoW server for about a week. Now, i'm wondering, is there any way to install leopard not from a disc, but from a hard drive? I have a legitimate copy of leopard and am really annoyed right now because I would like to take the computer in for repairs but cannot do so because of vista.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a friend who has a powerbook g4 (black keyboard) that was sold to him for very cheap, unfortunately the screen was torn off the base of the computer. Its in perfect running condition but he cant take it anywhere because the screen needs to be supported against a wall as it cant stand on its own. Is there any inexpensive way to fix the screen and restick back to the base of the laptop and if the only way to go is get a professional to do it, how much would it cost him to get it fix. He got the computer for 50 bucks so having the computer work perfectly even if he has to spend at most 300 dollars would be great.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi had my laptop on the floor in front of the recliner i was sitting it, i took the remote that i had put on the chair and fumbled it as i took it off of the chair. It fell about 2.5 feet straight onto my laptop and hit the screen. It bounced off of the the case in-between the hinge and the screen and then hit the screen about 2.5 inches up from the bottom. It made a crack from where it hit all the way to the top corner going at about a 45 degree angle to the left. Then the cat ran out of the room when i started cursing about my fumbling. There aren't any dead pixels some how, but it does have several cracks. Is there a plastic shield before the LCD layer? if anybody has a spare 14" ibook LCD screen from a 1.42GHz i book, i have money if you don't need it. Its not under warranty by the way.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy wife accidentaly dropped our ibook with the screen open. It landed on the corner of the screen, and the right hinge cracked a bit.It still close, but not perfect. It also seems that the hinge get worse every time I open and close it, so I left it open.happened a couople of weeks ago, and the machine it self runs perfect (or so it seems, no trouble since)I took it to my local Apple center and they said the hinge is a part of the screen, so to fix it they?ll have to change the screen. This is very expensive, especially due to the fact that it still works perfectly.The guy added that they MIGHT be able to improvise and just glue (or whatever) the hinge What do youthink are the chances that they can fix it without changing the screen?

I can get it for a good price and I would love to have it to replace my ibook. I don't know the specs for sure but I am positive I think it's the DVI version since it has the keyboard that looks like the ibooks(same placement for the keyboard release latches).The guy said it worked fine on an external monitor but just recently he said it won't boot now and it now makes a high-pitched whining sound. Anyone know what that is? I'd like to use it as a headless mac until I locate a new screen for it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to re-install leopard on my G5 with no success. I boot the machine up start the installation wizard from my desktop, it says that the wizard will continue after re-starting, and then proceeds to reboot.
However on booting my PM always ejects the CD, does anybody know how I can turn this off, as at the minute it's just restarting and booting back to my desktop each time.
got an IBook with its original install disks. OS 9.2. It has Linux on it now and works ok with that. I want Mac OS back on it but when I try to install it tells me that it can't find the hard drive. So thinking that I might have the wrong disks, ( i got it used so not positive 9.2 is correct) I got OS 10 and it does the same thing. When I get to the part that it asks 'where' do you want to install it show no disks at all except the CD drive.
Any Ideas what I need to do? As I said the disks are there and functioning because Linux is installed and works. Is there some type of Utility that I need to run to put a Mac partition back on it? That's my only idea that I can think of. If so what and where can I get it?
I've decided to reinstall OS X on my powerbook, but I'm having trouble. I can't partition or erase using disk utility from the cd. It says it's trying but it just sits there. When I try to do a erase and install, it stays at "preparing the disk".
View 3 Replies View RelatedI decided I wanted to use the 1TB HD that's in my brand new Mac Pro in my late 2005 Power Mac G5. I installed the HD and started up the Power Mac. I was planning to insert the OS X disk and have to reinstall the operating system.
But it booted up fine and seems to be working perfectly. I thought I would have needed to reinstall OS X since the hardware/specs are completely different (especially the processor Intel V PowerPC). I thought it would be having some kind of Mac Pro in Power Mac body freak-out!
Is that not the case? Can I go ahead and use this sucker without any dramas? I've read iMovie 09 isn't compatible with PowerPC. Will all the other system and iLife 09 software work OK?
I have an old G5 I'm giving away and I don't have the install disc for it. I was wondering if there was a way of formatting the hard drive and not reinstalling OS X straight away, but if someone inserts the disc when booting it up they can reinstall it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I got a BW 350 new back in 1999 and immediately OCed. I tried OCing it to 450 and it didn't work. I tried 400mHz and everything worked fine, its been that way ever since.
The BW has served me very well and I have since maxed the RAM and put a Radeon 7000 GPU into it and was using it as a TV media computer. It was working ok/good and so I thought I'd try to OC it again to 450 to see if I could get it working and squeeze a bit more juice out of it. God what a stupid idea.
It wouldn't work at 450 so I set it back to 400, it wouldn't work!!! Even back at 350 it won't work. God I can't believe I did this. I don't have the original block of jumpers that came with the computer (I know what box its in, but just can't find it).
Would replacing all the jumpers give it a chance at life again?
i have the new unibody white macbook. And sometimes when i am viewing pictures, there is a spot on the pic that looks like the screen would be broken (sorry i dont know how to explain this). This happens alot on almost every site sometimes though. Here is an example If you guys could please help me on this it would be great. You can see in the bottom pic what is wrong and it can look much worse on other pics like a bunch of little squares too.
View 12 Replies View RelatedIts been going for a while now and finally the right channel of audio has fully cut out from the headphone jack. This is a huge bummer. I mean the laptops 3 years old so its not to bad. I mean its taken a beating over the years. Its just that I use it to listen to music and audio out for watching dvds, so its no good for that anymore. I have an external audio card but thats no good for when I am mobile and I use the laptop all over the place. Is there a way to fix this or would it need a whole logic board replacement? Can I use a audio card that fits into those card slots on the left hand side of the Powerbook. What are those cards called again?

Anyway, I was thinking about upgrading the airport card in my powerbook to extreme, so I pulled out the battery and flipped the latch to find that the plastic tab to pull it out is missing. I sense a pain to get it out now, I haven't tried, though. Any tips on how to get the card out of its compartment without bending the aluminum etc? Also, there is a tiny nip in the little cable that plugs into the back of the card, I can't tell how bad it is, the WiFi works but doesn't that cable connect the card to the antennas on the top of the LCD on the system or worse.. to the logic board?

Obviously the ac adapter is screwed and needs replacing but short of pulling out the offending pin from the inside of the connector, would I have to replace the power supply? How complicated is this? I know the "Using imac as external monitor" topic has been adressed in previous posts and it apparently can't be done. But this is slightly different.
I have this Imac G5 24" that is currently out of order. (won't detect hard drives when powered on 90% of the time and when it does i am experiencing ridiculous lag and random shutdowns...not to mention crazy overheating)
I sent it to tech support and after changing the hard drive, power supply etc.. and still not seeing any improvement i just stopped sinking money in repairs and got a new imac.
So now i just have this useless imac laying around and i figured i might as well try and recycle it into a secondary monitor.. I don't mind hacking it open since i have nothing to lose. I was just wondering if it could be done and if so would it be very complicated? I would rather pay a few hundred dollars in wires and IT than buy a cheap external monitor since its already a decent quality monitor and it matches the new imac

View 12 Replies View Relatedso I was doing the ironing and watching a movie on my macbook and when I was done and clearing stuff up the ironing board thing kinda folded in half and my laptop dropped to the floor with a loud thud (onto a wooden floorboard)Basically the screen looks like when you break a glass window but it hasn't fallen apart, you just see loads of cracks at the point of impact...I have an apple care thing, but will this be covered under the guarantee or something? View 2 Replies View RelatedMy iBook has had a broken hard drive for a while now. I have tried loading a Linux live cd on it, but it's mostly useless because of having no storage. I want to be able to use it on the go. Is it possible that i could use a linux live usb, such as damn small linux, and use the memory on said flash drive instead of a hard drive? How would I go about doing this if I could. Keep in mind that it wont bother me that I won't have much storage space. I really only want to use it for web browsing on the go.
