MacBook :: How To Install Tiger With Broken CD R/RW

Nov 10, 2010

I have a 2006 macbook with Leopard. I need to use the garage band that came with my original Tiger installation discs. The problem is that my CD R/RW is broken and will not read any CD.

I read some tutorials to boot from a flash drive, but need to read from the optical drive in the same machine.

I need to make a flash drive with a bootable tiger from my PC.

MacBook :: Install OS With RAM Slot Broken

Feb 8, 2010

I am trying to set up an old macbook as a server and I am having a few problems getting the macbook to perform properly.

I know that one of the RAM slots are broken, should that effect the system if their is no RAM in that slot?

I get the occasional read/write error suggesting that their might be something wrong with the hard drive not sure what to do about that. I have zeroed out the HD twice as I herd that that figures out what memory blocks are still writable but it was of no help.

There is definitely something wrong and I need to test everything to make sure that it's working. I am running memtest as I speak. Is there anything I can do to check the performance of my HD?

The main problem I am having is that if I use software update, or try to install Snow Leopard the macbook reboots and sticks on the blue screen with a mouse. I have to reinstall the OS to get it to work again... this has happened a few times now. This also happens if I install a hardware demanding program such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and reboot.

MacBook Air :: Battery Broken During SSD Install?

Feb 17, 2010

Installation was easy, I used the ifixit guide. But - and I am still slapping myself for it - I broke the battery during installation.

Following the ifixit guide I removed the battery to have more room for the installation of the SSD. The battery came off very easily, but unfortunately with the socket from the motherboard still attached.

I have tried to reinstall it, but apparently the contact is to loose. It does not stick to the motherboard and I am wondering how Apple attached it in the first place.

My Macbook Air still works on AC - and the Runcore is a breeze - but it will not recognize the battery. That means my svelte MBA is no chained to my desk.

OS X :: Fresh Leopard Install On Macbook With Broken Dvd Drive?

Jun 30, 2009

Hi, I have a macbook with a broken DVD drive (one out of twenty problems I have had with this computer ), and was wondering if it is possible to install leopard without the internal DVD drive? I cannot really afford to replace the slot loading drive atm, nor buy an external usb drive.

Is it possible for me to connect my laptop to my friends iMac running 10.3, and using his computer as an external drive to install leopard?

MacBook :: Install Snow Leopard With Broken Combo Drive

May 16, 2010

I've been searching but I can't find anywhere where my specific problem is answered. Short version: Does Remote Disc work in Tiger (10.4.11)? Long version: I have the following:

Macbook running 10.4.11; busted DVD drive
PC running Win7 w/ Firewire port
Snow Leopard install disc

I'd like to get Remote Disc running on my laptop and install over the network (using my Win7 PC). I've done the terminal hack which is supposed to enable Remote Disc on MacBooks. However, Remote disc doesn't show up in my finder (not sure that 10.4.11 has a place for it to show). Does Remote disc work with Tiger-Macbooks? Or do you need Leopard? If Remote Disc won't work, can a Win7 PC install Snow Leopard via firewire to a Mac? If possible, I'd like to avoid buying an external DVD drive, as it appears Remote Disc will work in Snow Leopard. Don't have a firewire cable on me but I could buy one -- just want to be sure it will work before I waste the money.

This computer is fully capable of using leopard, plenty of HD space. And it the reason it gives for not installing is: Newer version of this software/program, already exists. OS X :: MacBook Won't Boot Tiger From Its Install Disk?

Dec 27, 2009

I was excited to get my hands on our family's 'family' copy of Snow Leopard to install on my MacBook running Tiger 10.4.11... I'd checked out tutorials on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loFUyDjCbK8) on how to clean install Snow leopard onto a blank hard disk, and was all set to bring my OS up to date...

I inserted the Snow Leopard DVD and restarted and immediately held down the 'c' key and then... 3 minutes or so of the loading icon ticking later and the DVD was rejected and I only had one button to click on, 'Macintosh HD' to start up from.

After re-trying several times I thought it was because I was trying to do it with Snow Leopard on my MacBook running Tiger so I tried restarting this time with disk 1 of the Tiger DVD. This was rejected too!

So currently I am not able to wipe my hard disk as far as I know because I can't get to this screen to start the process (unless it's possible to do from within Tiger and if it is then I'm just worried that if I wipe it and I can't restart from the DVDs then I'll be in even bigger trouble).

Has anyone encountered problems like these and does anyone know of a solution? I've never had any problems with my DVD drive in the past which leads me to suspect it's not because of that.

MacBook :: Re-install Tiger After Leopard Upgrade Failed

Mar 16, 2009

I tried installing Leopard on my iBook G4 and it did not succeed. Now, my computer has a half-installed upgraded OS that doesn't work. I was told at the Apple Store that my computer would run better with Tiger anyway since my processor is not up to snuff to handle Leopard (my iBook is from Jan 2006) and that I should erase the hard disk and re-install Tiger.

So now I'm trying to reinstall Tiger but when I insert the disk, start up the computer holding down the C key, the start stalls at the apple logo gray screen with the little cog spinning around. Nothing happens after that.

OS X :: Install Snow Leopard With Broken Optical Drive In MBP?

Sep 27, 2010

So my optical drive in my MBP will read single layer DVDs but not dual layers. I am currently running 10.5 and my end goal is to have 10.6 (snow leopard) on my MBP with a clean install. Problem is, my purchased copy of 10.6 can't be read by my MBP. Here is my thought process: 1st Option: Use the Remote Install OSX application to use another drive on my network. So I boot up the program on other macs in my house, restart my MBP while holding down the option key. Yet, my airport network never shows up on the white apple loading screen (just Macintosh HD). So I can't get the remote drive stuff to work.

2nd Option: Use an external HDD. Problem is is that I didn't know you have to have a blank partition for this. I have a 1TB WD External HDD with 18gigs free, but in order to make a partition, I would have to erase the drive first (am I correct on this?) I can't lose this data, and I don't have another external HDD. So is my only other HDD option to buy like a USB 16gig thumb drive (or really really cheap external), partition it with snow leopard dmg on it, and install with that?

Software :: Snow Leopard Install Crashed On MBP With Broken Superdrive

Sep 23, 2010

So, I have an old Mac Book Pro (circa 2006) that had become sluggish and old, so I wanted to completely reformat it and use it purely for Logic Mainstage.

The superdrive stopped working about a year and a half ago, so I wirelessly (a not so great idea, I now realise) connected to my iMacs superdrive and began installing Snow Leopard. However, the install crashed 3/4 of the way through and now the MBP shuts itself down after spending around 5 minutes on the grey apple/spinning disc logo on startup.

It seems like a lost cause but is there any way to fix this?

PowerPC :: Cannot Install Tiger On G4

Mar 10, 2009

I just obtained a PowerPC G4 Tower, but there was no hard drive in it. Because of this, I put in an older 20 gb hard drive I had just laying around. It is from an old Windows PC I had, but I don't know if thats a problem or not. Anyways, when I try to boot from the Tiger disc, nothing happens. I have tried holding down C when I turn the mac on, but that doesn't help at all. I just always get the mac icon with a question mark in the middle of the screen. I am just wondering, is this anything to do with the PC hard drive I put in the mac? Or is there something else that I am doing wrong? I just want Tiger to be installed on the computer.

However when I run Disk Utility the only option I have for formatting the partitions is MS-DOS or free space. No Mac OS X formats are offered. If I run a 10.5 Install disk I am offered the options in Disk Utility to use Mac OS X HDD formatting. Any one have any idea what I need to do to get DU in Tiger to format the HDD in Mac OS X format? BTW, the HDD's in the unit are pre-formatted in Windows NTFS if that makes a difference. I just want to make sure Tiger supports Mac OS X format before doing anything else.

Software :: Cannot Install Mac OS X Tiger

Oct 6, 2010

So I have a few ibooks at the time I didn't have actual copy of mac os x and needed to erase the HD so I hooked 2 of them up by firewire cable in target disk mode. I was able to erase that way except I don't know if messed anything up there are 2 spaces in disk utility that will something like 37.0 fujitsu and then underneath it would say Macintosh HD well I wrote zeros to both took about 25 minutes then I get a copy of mac os a few days later try to drag the source mac os x tiger into destination the one that says fujitsu 37.0gb (by the way I'm doing this all with external monitor cause they have cracked screens). I shut the ibook off then power it on by itself it will start the installer for tiger and ask what volume I want to install it on and the picture of the harddrive that you are supposed to click isn't coming up I can't select anything it's blank. If the harddrive is bad then why would I be able to copy the source mac os x tiger onto it ? but won't let me install on the HD.
