Clearly there must be a way to do this, right? Can I install off an external hard drive? Off a USB drive? Share my macbook pro's DVD drive somehow? If the hard drive on the mac mini is completely reformatted and I plug it into the USB port on the external hard drive which I partition and install the Leopard DMG would it be able to boot off of it?
View 9 RepliesI am having an issue with a G5 my buddy just gave to me. The computer had been working fine for him, he recently got a new iMac. Anyways, we wiped the hard drive and I took it to my place to do a clean install with 10.4. Upon start-up I get a screen with a folder icon that flashes between a question mark and the mac face. I have tried holding down C upon boot, no success. Dual CPU powermac G5, bought in 2003 or 04 (he thinks 2003). Do not have original installation disk. Have retail copy of 10.4 If I hold down the option key when powering on. On the screen appears a mouse icon which I can move, as well as two icons. A circular arrow in a box, and a right-pointing arrow in a box.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo my optical drive in my MBP will read single layer DVDs but not dual layers. I am currently running 10.5 and my end goal is to have 10.6 (snow leopard) on my MBP with a clean install. Problem is, my purchased copy of 10.6 can't be read by my MBP. Here is my thought process: 1st Option: Use the Remote Install OSX application to use another drive on my network. So I boot up the program on other macs in my house, restart my MBP while holding down the option key. Yet, my airport network never shows up on the white apple loading screen (just Macintosh HD). So I can't get the remote drive stuff to work.
2nd Option: Use an external HDD. Problem is is that I didn't know you have to have a blank partition for this. I have a 1TB WD External HDD with 18gigs free, but in order to make a partition, I would have to erase the drive first (am I correct on this?) I can't lose this data, and I don't have another external HDD. So is my only other HDD option to buy like a USB 16gig thumb drive (or really really cheap external), partition it with snow leopard dmg on it, and install with that?
Hi, I have a macbook with a broken DVD drive (one out of twenty problems I have had with this computer ), and was wondering if it is possible to install leopard without the internal DVD drive? I cannot really afford to replace the slot loading drive atm, nor buy an external usb drive.

Macbook running 10.4.11; busted DVD drive
PC running Win7 w/ Firewire port
Snow Leopard install disc
I'd like to get Remote Disc running on my laptop and install over the network (using my Win7 PC). I've done the terminal hack which is supposed to enable Remote Disc on MacBooks. However, Remote disc doesn't show up in my finder (not sure that 10.4.11 has a place for it to show). Does Remote disc work with Tiger-Macbooks? Or do you need Leopard? If Remote Disc won't work, can a Win7 PC install Snow Leopard via firewire to a Mac? If possible, I'd like to avoid buying an external DVD drive, as it appears Remote Disc will work in Snow Leopard. Don't have a firewire cable on me but I could buy one -- just want to be sure it will work before I waste the money.
I purchased an external harddrive to back up my entire student drive. The drive had to be formatted to be compatible with a Mac, and I did this with the customer support over the phone. Used basic copy and paste methods to put my information on the ehd. I triple checked to make sure it stayed there, by properly ejecting drive and plugging it back in. Had my mbPro wiped clean entirely, reloaded Leopard, and am now left with just basic applications and files. Plug in the ehd, and it shares the exact same information as my current wiped-clean drive. I made it as an exact replica of my information filled mac, and it is now an exact replica of my empty mac. All documents, music, photos, applications, etc. GONE. This information was valuable to me beyond words, and I need it back. Does TimeMachine have anything to do with this? I have never used this application, but upon plugging in my ehd, it asked for SOMETHING (which I don't remember).

I'm in a pretty big mess right now. I was using boot camp with lion and Windows 7 no problem and I wanted to edit the sizes of the partions. It didnt go so well and I ended up losing both operating systems. Now the big problem is when I boot up from the recovery partion I cannot do any sort of formating from the disk utility, it always give me some sort of error. When I try to install lion via web there is no partion that I can Install it to. I can install Windows no problem from a USB drive whcih I have done already. When managing the disk in windows I see 2 of the windows partions, the mac recovery partion, and an 80 GB partition that I can format but I cannot do anything else with. I dont have any images or recovery devices other than the recovery partition.how to get the drive back to mac format so I can re install lion.

I'm using a iMac PowerPC G5 that I've received from my brother. He gave it to me with a fresh install of Leopard on it, but he unfortunately no longer has the disc that came with the computer that he also used to format it before handing it to me. With that said, I ordered a new internal hard drive. Naturally, I'll need to re-install Leopard, but I don't have an install disc anywhere. How is this going to be possible? Or will it not be? Do I have to buy a new Leopard install disc? If so where and how much?

With all other installs (applications, games, etc...) my hard drive will show up and that's what I'll click on, but here nothing shows up except my iPod that was plugged in. As a note, it worked on my other computers, but is not working on my G5.

It's just for emergency purposes, so if trackpad gestures are missing or something, no big deal. I just want a DiskWarrior drive I can use on all my Intel Macs--especially the Air with no DVD drive. (I know I could install OS X using the Air itself--but wireless installation would be slow. Better to install OS X quickly on my iMac via USB.)

They initially suggested that I get to keep the hardrive from the machine, but now they are insinuating that I have to send in the entire machine. I have lots of data on the drive including unprotected bank details and other sensitive information.
I somehow need to wipe this clean by monday when I need to send it off. Problem is I have no idea how to do this, the machine won't boot, all I have is a imac, I don't even have a fire wire cable that is compatible between the two machines so I can't start it in target disk mode. I refuse to send it to them with my data on it so my last resort will be to destroy the drive itself (although how I do this without causing structural damage is beyond me).
my MacBook harddrive stopped working last week. I took it to a Mac Certified guy, but he was unable to recover any of the applications or files on the drive. This is the second drive in two years. The first one I was able to find a guy who recovered everything and put it onto disks. I tried those on the new harddrive, and the iPhoto application and files are not opening. Is there any way to recover the stuff on the second hard drive?

I thought I bought the right one but my MBA wasn't able to recognize the new HD. This new HD is a generic Samsung while the original was the one with the apple () printed on the label. View 4 Replies View RelatedSo my hard drive just broke. Like a fool I accidently dropped it this morning and this means it cant be booted. I've tried everything I could find on reviving the thing but nothing has worked. However, after leaving it on the grey Apple booting screen for a good hour or so it finally managed to get to the desktop but was still going slowly. My macbook is able to boot of my external hard drive and I've checked the RAM and it's fine, which leaves me to believe that it's a problem with the hard drive itself.
Now the issue is that my external hard drive is only 160GB and my internal (now broken) one is 500GB with around 300GB of stuff on it (yes I do need it) and I don't want to have to lose it all. So is there any way of getting my currently broken hard drive and putting its data onto a new one? My idea is to take it out, install the new one and use the broken was as an external and do it like that.
How can I do this? I have an iMac G3 @ 333Mhz with a broken CD Drive. I have a retail panther box with all of the disks. I have a MBP if that helps. Do I need to buy a new drive?

Our old Toshiba External Hard drive has failed ( approximately 3 years old ). It powers on and the blue light comes on, but the fans don't spin and you can't see it in the finder or on my computer ( we tried on both PC and Mac ).

Everything worked fine for about two weeks until the contact area between my power cord and the computer started to smoke. I've no longer been able to turn on my computer. I've had strange issues with my non-warrantied MacBook--including having to replace the battery four times over my three years of owning it and twice having to replace my power adapter (as it literally caught fire twice).
I've since given up on the MacBook Pro and purchased a new cheap laptop. However, I've got lots of important files on that brand new hard drive I put into my laptop. As I'm assuming the hard drive itself is still functional, I want to know how I could remove it and obtain my data. Do any of you know what sort of chassis I could purchase in order to essentially use my MacBook Pro's hard drive as an external drive to obtain these files?
