MacBook :: Install OS With RAM Slot Broken
Feb 8, 2010
I am trying to set up an old macbook as a server and I am having a few problems getting the macbook to perform properly.
I know that one of the RAM slots are broken, should that effect the system if their is no RAM in that slot?
I get the occasional read/write error suggesting that their might be something wrong with the hard drive not sure what to do about that. I have zeroed out the HD twice as I herd that that figures out what memory blocks are still writable but it was of no help.
There is definitely something wrong and I need to test everything to make sure that it's working. I am running memtest as I speak. Is there anything I can do to check the performance of my HD?
The main problem I am having is that if I use software update, or try to install Snow Leopard the macbook reboots and sticks on the blue screen with a mouse. I have to reinstall the OS to get it to work again... this has happened a few times now. This also happens if I install a hardware demanding program such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and reboot.

I have an imac g3 slot loading that came with a CD in it. It sounds pretty bad when trying to eject and finally a bit came out and I could grab it. Is there a way to investigate or repair or replace?

I have a 2006 Macbook with a "Core Duo" processor. When I got it, one of the RAM slots was busted, so I put a 1gb stick in the working one to add a little speed. My question is, since the maximum RAM in this model macbook is 2gb, would it be possible to install a single 2gb stick into the working slot?

I have a 2006 macbook with Leopard. I need to use the garage band that came with my original Tiger installation discs. The problem is that my CD R/RW is broken and will not read any CD.
I read some tutorials to boot from a flash drive, but need to read from the optical drive in the same machine.
I need to make a flash drive with a bootable tiger from my PC.

Installation was easy, I used the ifixit guide. But - and I am still slapping myself for it - I broke the battery during installation.
Following the ifixit guide I removed the battery to have more room for the installation of the SSD. The battery came off very easily, but unfortunately with the socket from the motherboard still attached.
I have tried to reinstall it, but apparently the contact is to loose. It does not stick to the motherboard and I am wondering how Apple attached it in the first place.
My Macbook Air still works on AC - and the Runcore is a breeze - but it will not recognize the battery. That means my svelte MBA is no chained to my desk.

Hi, I have a macbook with a broken DVD drive (one out of twenty problems I have had with this computer ), and was wondering if it is possible to install leopard without the internal DVD drive? I cannot really afford to replace the slot loading drive atm, nor buy an external usb drive.
Is it possible for me to connect my laptop to my friends iMac running 10.3, and using his computer as an external drive to install leopard?

I've been searching but I can't find anywhere where my specific problem is answered. Short version: Does Remote Disc work in Tiger (10.4.11)? Long version: I have the following:
Macbook running 10.4.11; busted DVD drive
PC running Win7 w/ Firewire port
Snow Leopard install disc
I'd like to get Remote Disc running on my laptop and install over the network (using my Win7 PC). I've done the terminal hack which is supposed to enable Remote Disc on MacBooks. However, Remote disc doesn't show up in my finder (not sure that 10.4.11 has a place for it to show). Does Remote disc work with Tiger-Macbooks? Or do you need Leopard? If Remote Disc won't work, can a Win7 PC install Snow Leopard via firewire to a Mac? If possible, I'd like to avoid buying an external DVD drive, as it appears Remote Disc will work in Snow Leopard. Don't have a firewire cable on me but I could buy one -- just want to be sure it will work before I waste the money.

My old macbook has a broken optical drive inside it. The one that came with it has quit working and the genius at the genius bar said it needed to be replaced. The genius said to get an external one online so I bought the Amazon basics external dvd drive. How to install it and get it to work.

I have a mid-2007 white MacBook/with 2 GB Ram.Upgraded op system recently all the way to OS.7.3!Is it possible to install 4 GB of Ram---add 2 GB to each slot for a total of 4GB? Performance w/Lion is annoyingly slow. Mac Genius Bar suggested replacing the hard drive....so now I have a and new 160G hard drive. But the Lion is still slower than my attention span can stand! Genius Bar said more RAM would help the performance and speed problem----but advised that this model is not capable of supporting 4 GB.is it? What else can be done? Can not afford a newer MacBook now.Should I just uninstall Lion?

i have 10.2 install discs 1 & 2 can i use an ibook to be a slave and put the install cds in that? mainly, the guy's problem im trying to fix is that his daughter deleted the utilities folder from the iMac g3 running 10.2.8. i want to upgrade him to 10.4 of which i have the disc install DVD. what would be the easiest way to do this seeing the cd drive on the iMac G3 is busted, i have install discs 1 & 2 for 10.2 jaguar and the install dvd for 10.4 tiger? and his daughter erased the utilities folder on the iMac g3 with 10.2.8 on it. I can use his ibook with functional dvd-rom drive as a slave right?

I would like to set up a mac pro using Slots 1 & 2 for RME ADAT digital audio cards and move the graphics card (geforce GT 120 512mb) to slot 3 or 4 so that I can maximize slot speeds for multiple audio playback via logic. Is this possible?

So my optical drive in my MBP will read single layer DVDs but not dual layers. I am currently running 10.5 and my end goal is to have 10.6 (snow leopard) on my MBP with a clean install. Problem is, my purchased copy of 10.6 can't be read by my MBP. Here is my thought process: 1st Option: Use the Remote Install OSX application to use another drive on my network. So I boot up the program on other macs in my house, restart my MBP while holding down the option key. Yet, my airport network never shows up on the white apple loading screen (just Macintosh HD). So I can't get the remote drive stuff to work.
2nd Option: Use an external HDD. Problem is is that I didn't know you have to have a blank partition for this. I have a 1TB WD External HDD with 18gigs free, but in order to make a partition, I would have to erase the drive first (am I correct on this?) I can't lose this data, and I don't have another external HDD. So is my only other HDD option to buy like a USB 16gig thumb drive (or really really cheap external), partition it with snow leopard dmg on it, and install with that?

I have cracked my OS X 10.6.4 install disk, (which, it seems to mean that my iLife application disk wont work either). Is there any way to get a replacement? I don't always live near internet access, so Lion isn't really an option.

So, I have an old Mac Book Pro (circa 2006) that had become sluggish and old, so I wanted to completely reformat it and use it purely for Logic Mainstage.
The superdrive stopped working about a year and a half ago, so I wirelessly (a not so great idea, I now realise) connected to my iMacs superdrive and began installing Snow Leopard. However, the install crashed 3/4 of the way through and now the MBP shuts itself down after spending around 5 minutes on the grey apple/spinning disc logo on startup.
It seems like a lost cause but is there any way to fix this?

Clearly there must be a way to do this, right? Can I install off an external hard drive? Off a USB drive? Share my macbook pro's DVD drive somehow? If the hard drive on the mac mini is completely reformatted and I plug it into the USB port on the external hard drive which I partition and install the Leopard DMG would it be able to boot off of it?

So i finally figured out what has been causing all of my kernel panics. Either the brackets or the notches that are holding the second ram stick in place have become faulty. The second ram stick permanently stays in the upright position, and if i do manage to get it parallel to everything, it can jump up at a moments notice if I do something with my computer. This is clearly a manufacturer's defect, but i dont have any warranty left. So i was wondering if any of you guys know where i can get a new ram slot since it doesnt seem to be like it is soldered to the logic board. I had 4gb, now im running on one 2gb stick, and basically the computer is nearly unusable in its current state.

I put in a DVD movie I just bought, and when I insert it it just try's to run but eventually gets ejected.
