I have a g4 1.5 powerbook that I use everyday.Today I went to turn it on and all I am getting on the start up is the Apple symbol and the hourglass circle that just keeps spinning. I am pretty sure the hard disc is the problem. Bc, I can't hear it spinning.

So, recently (as of thursday or so) my PBG4 has been making weird buzzing noises, usually only when it was working hard (or watching things online). Eventually, as it got closer to the weekend, the noise started to get louder whenever it would come on, so I'd just turn off my computer for an hour or so and let it cool. Finally, today, I turn it off again and now whenever I turn it back on, all I get is the gray start up screen, sans spinner. Sometimes I even get a little folder with the mac face on it. What's wrong?

But ever since switching over to this new battery, my computer has had issues starting up. A grey screen fades into white and the Apple logo never appears. The computer will just stay like that for hours. A friend suggested turning the power off and back on, holding apple+ctrl+P+R, which worked. However, the next time I turned my computer on, the screen stayed white again, without an Apple logo. Can you tell me what the deal is? Should I bother reporting this to Apple? Is this permanent damage I'm going to have to go thru everytime I start me laptop? Any way to fix it? Thanks.

A friend of mine brought over his 14" iBook G4, 1.33GHz, 60GB HDD and 1.25 GB RAM. The problem with it is that upon start-up, the grey screen with the apple/turning gear comes up, then after a few moments a blue screen will appear, though no box showing the start-up process. I've run a few basic diagnostics on this, including the lovely disk utility (which did nothing), I've run fsck, zapped the PRAM, etc, no success as of yet. At one point, I received a screen with alternating folders, one showing the smiley mac face, the other folder with a flashing "?". I cannot replicate this for the life of me. I have attempted to acquire files via TDM, though am not able to see the hard drive despite using 2 different laptops. Possibly the firewire cable itself is spent, though it's brand new! Here is where I become increasingly frustrated: I ask my friend for the boot disks as the ones for my own 12" iBook don't work (for whatever reason). He tells me that he loaded Leopard this summer (currently running 10.5.2, no updates loaded since), then proceeds to bring over boot discs for a MacBook...:headdesk: To begin with, it seemed like the HDD was fried, however, after running disk utility (and not hearing any negative sounds), it does appear that the HDD is fine. I'm thinking a kernel panic, though not sure how to resolve these.
View 11 Replies View RelatedEvery time I restart my macbook it will take me to a blue screen and the mouse pointer will be in the top left hand corner of the screen. It will not start in safe mode. I've done the "fsck -f" I don't have a the snow leopard disk any longer, but I can of course obtain another if it is the only way to fix this problem. I'm at college, the disk is at home 8 hours away..and I want on my computer now. Sorry for my lack of intelligence concerning this issue as well as the OSX as a whole, this is my first Mac and I love it!

I started the Apple Hardware Diagnose and it hangs in the middle! the Apple Authorized shop/repair people told me (after the tried to fix it) it is mostly the Logic Board
Can it be the RAM or the CPUs? my mac is out of warranty and the cost to fix it is crazy! so I was thinking I can buy the parts and replace it my self.
I was trying to install Windows XP Pro, but for some reason the it wasn't showing another HDD to install Windows on. So I quit the install, and restarted my computer. Now all that happens is the normal grey screen appears (with no Apple logo), then it goes to a black screen and has the blinking cursor (Kinda like DOS).
View 14 Replies View RelatedOK, so I did something truly stupid. I managed to splash water on my macbook. I hit a small cup of water (about 2 oz) with the end of the computer with the CD drive. It immediately shut off. The next day, I set it outside to dry in the sun and by midday, all was well. It functioned just as it always had. This continued through last night. This morning, when powering on, all I got was a white screen (no tone). After doing powering up while holding command-alt-r-t (a sequence I found on a help board), it will now make the tone, but maintains the white screen. I am slowly accepting that I am an idiot and the computer is probably a loss. Multiple internet searches have suggested it is either the logic board or the hard drive (at the very least). Any ideas?
My dad is a computer programmer, but does not use macs. He looked at it and just shook his head. I am very non-computer savvy (I know how to turn it on). He did say if it is the logic board I should be able to retrieve all of my (non backed up) files on the hard drive. He said he really doesn't think that it is the hard drive.I also am learning that it will probably be cheaper to replace than to repair. However, I am willing to try anything which might help.
there is a small chip behind the glass of my 27" imac. It's about the size of a small crumb or the eye of a small needle. It's hard to see, but it's definitely there. Today is my last day to get the imac replaced or repaired. I have a feeling if I bring it in that they will see there's no reason to swap out the entire imac, and if there is I would have to wait awhile because it's a custom high end one so they don't have the specsI'm worried if they swap the glass that it's just some 19 year old kid that does it and he won't be careful with the screen and will get dust, finger prints, etc. on the glass making it worse.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis morning, I synced my iPod with my MacBook and upon completion and permission to disconnect the device, I pulled out the USB cord. At that point the computer instantly turned itself off, and when I hit the power button, I could hear the system trying to start up, but the screen remained black and the sleep light glowed continuously. I unplugged the charger, took out the battery and put it back in, and tried all the troubleshooting tips under the Apple Support guide with no success. I also discovered that when I closed the laptop while it was "on," it would seem to boot up a little more before returning to the black screen. I left it alone for a few hours, and when I tried again to turn it on, it booted up normally and as I was searching for updates, it shut down again as it had earlier.
Does anyone have anything for me to try? I don't want to have to take it into a shop because I can just barely afford to, but I need this computer! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :-)
I was working on this machine 3 hours back. Thereafter I put the machine on standby mode. Now when i try to start the laptop, the icon for password does not appear. Instead a mouse curser sign and a circle [like freezing] appears on the screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedFirst Mac Attack, must say I like working on these things, I'm working on a friends late 2004 ibook g4 that seems to boot up fine, but with lines across screen exactly like this one found in google images. Most of the info I've come across seems to point to a logic board failure, but also have seen posts relating to LCD failure. wondering if any here have encountered this and what eventually found was problem. This ibook is litterally on the verge of just being replaced anyway. I'm only working on it because It's a first, and believe the education is valuable.

Hi all, I have two Powerbook G4 laptops. Both have very similar problems. When I try to start up, the grey screen with the apple and spinning wheel appears, but I can't get beyond that. If I walk away for an hour, when I come back there will still be a grey screen with apple and spinning wheel.
I admit I know little about this sort of thing, so I began poking around online for solutions. I tried Tech Tool Deluxe. Inserted the disk and held down "C," but again it never progressed beyond the grey screen with apple and spinning wheel. Most frustrating. Is there any other way of running the disk with the laptop?
Entering the terminal yielded slightly different results on each machine.

I tried plugging both latops into my desktop in target mode. In both cases the target icon appeared on the laptop screen but the hard drive icon never appeared on the desktop screen. I would love to at least retrieve a few files off each machine, if nothing else.
so i go to turn my imac on tonight and it makes the normal noise when it always turns on but the screen stays blank(light blue)....after about 2 minutes this little picture of a folder with a question mark shows up in the middle of the screen. it keeps making this clicking noise as well. ive tried unplugging everything and restarting it here is a pic of what the thing that pop ups looks like [URL]
View 8 Replies View RelatedWe just installed Lion Server on a 2008 xserve.Everything work fine, but when it's time for TM to make a new backup (every hour) it just don't start.We need to start it mannualy. TM keeps the scheduling for the next hour but when it's come again it doesn't want to start!

So my MBP 13" 2.26ghz worked up until the firmware update was installed, and then everything froze up and it took about 15 minutes to boot up, 5 minutes to shut down. So i called apple, and after a 1 hour phone call, they told me that i could get it replaced. I live an hours drive from the nearest apple store, and will have to drive up there to get it replaced, do you think i could ask for some kind of compensation for my problems, and having to drive 4 hours (2 to buy it the first time, 2 more to get it replace) to take care of the problem.
Do you think I could ask for the 2.53ghz model, or an apple/itunes gift card. or Should i even ask for anything, i mean i paid 1200 for this computer, and after 3 hours of owning it is not useable, and now i have to spend all this time trying to get it replaced.
Today I ran the safari update on my MBA (snow leopard). After that MBA won't start I see a white screen with the apple symbol and the sort of turning clock symbol (not the beachball) turning . after some time a horizontal line appears to be filled in , but it won't fill in \(only for a sixth) The apple symbol remains on srceen for ever but no next screen did already do several restarts no success. what else can I try ?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am looking at purchasing an Ibook G4 but the description of the item includes this:"When you switch it on it begins to load up i.e. the blue screen with the Apple logo, but then the screen goes black or flickers. Said friend has kindly wiped the hard drive for me so now when you switch it on it makes the �opening� noise then you get a blue screen with alternating �?� and the Finder logo."
I have a feeling this may have been a temporary fault with the screen connector being loose and possibly damaged.But i assume the alternating "?" and the "finder logo" is simply a lack of OS?
just installed 10.5.6 on their last gen. iBook.She left the iBook plugged in to the mains and came back to find that the iBook was alternating between the grey Apple screen and a light blue desktop screen where she could see the cursor. Sometimes it would also switch to a blue screen without a cursor.
I've tried holding shift during startup - no effect.
I've tried rebooting NVRAM - no effect.
When i start the computer and the grey screen comes up with the apple logo etc., a grey "loading" bar has started appearing in the bottom of the screen. Takes a few minutes for it to go away. In the meantime the computer gets very hot and the fans are up to 6000 rpm. Then the os starts up, and I cannot download anything, due to the fact that it thinks my harddrive is full, though i have more than 100 gb of free space.I cant even download the 10.6.2 now due to the harddrive appears to be full

Today i powered up my iBook G4, after a long time of waiting for the blue bar on the start up screen to reach the end, it became stuck once it had reached the end, i left it for a hour or so on this screen, and it hasn't got past it, i did a hardware test, and everything is fine, although it took about 8 minutes to complete the 'memory' test, so i'm thinking it could be a RAM problem ?, what do you guys think ?
EDIT: Just used disk utility and apparently there is a problem with the disk, that it can't fix, so i'm gonna have to reinstall OSX
I just started my iBook g4 up and after the initial grey screen with the spinning thing and apple logo, it just stays at the blue screen straight after that. I have left it for ages and it is still there and I have tried several times now. Does anyone know what the problem is and how I could fix it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy MacBook Pro won't boot past the white startup screen with the Apple logo. After doing some trouble shooting my best guess is that the issue is either an issue with the logic board or the hard drive, but I am no expert so I may not be right. Here is what I have tried so far. I have done all these steps multiple times and the results have varied, but here are my most recent results:
1) First off, there are no peripherals connected so that is already ruled out as the cause.
2) When I try starting up in safe mode (holding shift while starting), the Apple logo, spinning wheel and progress bar appear. The progress bar fills about a third of the way then stops. I have left it for quite a long time and it still stays at a third of the way.
3) When running a safe boot (holding shift+command+v at startup) it gives me a " SATA WARNING: Enable auto-activate failed" message, and then eventually times out. Here is the full message:
4) Resetting the PRAM (holding option+command+p+r at startup) does the second chime but only results in the flashing folder icon with the question mark.
5) I tried booting up the computer in single user mode (holding command+s at startup) and running fsck -fy, it again gives me a "SATA WARNING: Enable auto-activate failed", then eventually times out. Here is the full message:
6) I tried booting in recovery mode (holding option while starting). When I do this I do not get the OSX utilities screen. Instead I get a white screen, sometimes my hard drive shows up on the screen, sometimes it does not.
If i boot in recovery mode with my osx install disc inserted the disc appears. If I select the hard drive we are just back to the apple logo and spinning wheel. If I select the install disc it goes to the apple logo/spinning wheel again, sometimes it allows me to start running the install, but then when it gets to the step where you select the hard drive to run the install on, no hard drives appear.
So that's where I'm at. I do not care about losing any data because luckily I backed up this machine right before this started happening.
