We just installed Lion Server on a 2008 xserve.Everything work fine, but when it's time for TM to make a new backup (every hour) it just don't start.We need to start it mannualy. TM keeps the scheduling for the next hour but when it's come again it doesn't want to start!

I just noticed that Time Machine in Snow Leopard seems to think that 12:55 AM (or 00:55 in 24-hour format) should read '24:55'.
I just thought I'd share this slightly odd bug with you.
It does not start the backup process when scheduled time passed.
symptoms:
1.Example: TM says Next Backup: Today, 10:21 AM, the backup did not start, the time changed to the next bacup schedule time 11:20. No other message. When I look at the log, there are no activity at all.
2. I can request a backup "Backup Now", it backs up normaly. It updates the time for the next schedule backup.
3. For some unknow reason the TM may do a backup and schedule the next backup, but when the time due for the next backup, it will not start the job, it just reschedule the next back up time.
4. The TM disk icon will not stay as the blue time machine icon. It switch to the regular yellow disk icon.
Over the past week i have been having big problems with my Time Machine backup drive. My backup drive is an Iomega Helium 500GB partioned as HFS+ Journaled.
I usually backup every two days so i plugged into my macbook pro on wednesday night. I left it for about 15 minutes and came back expecting the backup to be done. Instead I found it was deleting old backups? I thought this was odd as the drive had 150 or so GB free and i only had a few for songs and documents since my last backup on monday. After another 15 minutes i returned to find it was backing up 120GB! I had no idea where it had come up with that insane amount of data. so i checked my mac's hard drive space to find i had 236GB free just like it has been around that for a few weeks. I let it back up and unplugged it later that night. I forgot to backup on friday so i plugged it in this morning. It was deleting old backups again and backing up a further 140GB!
I have now come to the conclusion that i should wipe the drive and start again.
How can I do this?
My Time Machine will not start at all (for restoring). No errors in the Console. I tried reinstalled it with Pacifist. I repaired the permissions. I tried delete all prefs (as I don't know the exact plist for this app.) and caches.
It's working when I log in to another account.

I cannot enter the time machine when I press the time machine icon. I press and nothing happens, so I'm not sure even if it is backing up at this point. When i go to my Tme Capsule it has the folder there for back-ups and the most recent, but no access from the icon.

View 24 Replies View RelatedMy roommate just lost his data, so I realized I needed to back up. I plugged in an external hard drive (it was an internal that we put into casing bought from OWC, if that matters). I wasn't thinking about Time Machine but it displayed a message, so I said yes, backup onto the hard drive. Then while it was backing up I was just reading a document, the machine crashed. I swiveled my desk to get something and this caused the external hard drive to fall, for a second it was dangling from the USB. (I'm not sure if that's relevant but.)
I first restart (held down the power button), since nothing was happening. At that point the hard drive was making a weird rhythmic clicking sound. Then it wouldn't start up! I tried this twice. Blank gray screen. I reset the PRAM (was that a bad idea?) and when it started again, I get a folder icon with a blinking question mark, over a gray background. Then I freaked out because this was what happened to my roommate, so I haven't touched the computer since.
What could have gone wrong? What to do now? (Local help centers only open on Monday..) Is it worth it to take a train for an hour to go to an apple store right now?
How do I proceed to delete the time machine files in time capsule and start all over again to backup?

View 17 Replies View RelatedSo my MBP 13" 2.26ghz worked up until the firmware update was installed, and then everything froze up and it took about 15 minutes to boot up, 5 minutes to shut down. So i called apple, and after a 1 hour phone call, they told me that i could get it replaced. I live an hours drive from the nearest apple store, and will have to drive up there to get it replaced, do you think i could ask for some kind of compensation for my problems, and having to drive 4 hours (2 to buy it the first time, 2 more to get it replace) to take care of the problem.
Do you think I could ask for the 2.53ghz model, or an apple/itunes gift card. or Should i even ask for anything, i mean i paid 1200 for this computer, and after 3 hours of owning it is not useable, and now i have to spend all this time trying to get it replaced.
I have had my Mac for about 4 months now and I have noticed that it does not announce the time on the hour anymore. I have the option set in Date and Time, but it does not work. I just did an Archive and Install today, so it is not the system.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy new MBP has 5 hours of battery when doing light web browsing at medium brightness. Only 2-3 hours when playing low res youtube clips, and 6:45 hours with all apps and wifi turned off and screen brightness at minimum.
When I first turned on the MBP I charged it to 100% and then discharged it down to 0. Is this battery life normal? What happened to 8-9 hours with wifi and web browsing? I can't even get 7 hours with everything off!

imagine having an address book with several thousand entries. Imagine you have to send an announcement for a meeting to a group of about two hundred people roughly once a month. That group evolves: sometimes people drop out, sometimes new people join. The way I currently handle this is that I search in my "Sent" history for past instances of this email, then copy and paste the email addresses into a new message body, then go through my Inbox to search for requests from new people to be added and add them to the recipient list, then search my Inbox for people who want to be removed and take their emails out of the copied-pasted recipient list from last month, then finally get to write the new email body and send it out. Takes about 15 minutes of my time each time I do it just to get the email ready, about a minute to write the body.
So I thought it's time to create a group that I can over time subtract and add to, but is there a simpler way to do this than go through my several thousand addresses long address book and find the addresses of folks that have been recipients in the past (which would roughly take me an hour to do)? Wouldn't it be logical for Mail to simply allow me to establish a new group, than drag and drop the email addresses from past recipient lists into that group (which would take roughly 5 seconds)?

I have a MacBook Air and a Time Capsule - both from november 2011.Using Time Machine is givning me som problems.It works fine for some days, an is backing up as planned.But at least 5 times since I got the Time Capsule, Time Machine is asking to make a full Backup, and when I look in Time Machine, it says that there is no "old backup". It has been runing since november 2011.When I start a new backup, as it ask for, it takes at least 24 hours to finish - some times even longer.Is this normal? If not, what do I do?

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.Â
During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).Â
It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?
I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

I have updated to 10.7.4, and now Time Machine does not work on my Time Capsule. I have erased all backups using the Airport Utility. When I try to run Time Machine, the disk is mounted, files are calculated, backup starts, then stops, and no backup is done. Also, no error messages.Â
View 2 Replies View Relatedhave a MacBook Pro 15" 10.7.4 which isn't working with TimeMachine any more When starting a backup, Time Machine tells me to backup 112kB (for example) .... an running and running, and after a short time "2kB from 112kB" ... and runnig and running and then "5kb from 112kB" and so on. The progress status is updating very slowly.Â
The weired thing is: the ".inProgress" file on the external hard drive (tried FireWire and USB connection) is growing to 85GB (the total used space on the hard drive) while Time machine status tells me it has saved some kB. And every backup is running in that way. Instead of backing up only the difference, all files where backuped - although the status is displaying a few 100kB - which should be the right size to backup.Â

So had to be something with the System itself.
I have bought this Mac six moths ago. Now for unknown reason, it crashes when it starts booting. Before it crashes, it shows the Apple logo, then it shows the Apple logo with a loading bar. I guess it try's to restore the system... I don't know. But when the loading bar starts loading, the computer crashes.

Lot of problems are there but major problems is startup time it takes 3 minutes to start. Leopart used to start in seconds. Battery life has been decreased.Â
