PowerPC :: Emergency Disk Remove For G4 - Reformat Computer Without Disk?

Sep 8, 2006

So i put the OSX disk in (10.3) and when i make it boot from the disk the mac logo pops up then it shifts a quarter inch to the right and freezes. I then tried booting it normally and pressed the install button now it boots off the CD automatically with the same result and can't be turned off. Is there an emergency disk remove thing for a powerbook G4? And is there a way to reformat my computer without the disk?

I want to create a minimal recovery boot disk for SL. I've followed how-to's on creating one for 10.4 and 10.5, but so far it I couldn't get it to work with 10.6. If you have successfully done this, or can point me to a pre-made image or how-to.

OS X :: Trying To Reformat Macbook From Install Disk?

Apr 23, 2010

I have a 13" white macbook with leopard on it that I got about 2 years ago. Anyway, the other day I was cleaning stuff I didn't need anymore off it and I somehow accidentally moved the "library" folder that's in the "system" folder in to the trash. I tried removing it but it wouldn't let me, then my mac froze and I restarted and it just showed the Apple logo while flashing an anti-logo and a folder with a question mark on it. I took it to the Genius bar and the guy asked me if I had my files backed up and I said no, but he told me a way I could back them up on my girlfriend's mac using a fire cable and then just reformat it myself. So I bought the cable and put the files on my girflriend's mac. However, now when I'm trying to reformat it from the installer disk, it doesn't seem to be working. It shows the Apple logo and the loading gear underneath and then it switches to that anti-logo (circle with slash through it) and the loading gear continues. I let it run like this all night but still no change. I tried resetting the PRAM and other things. I've held C and held D to run a hardware test and it says there are no problems. I've held Alt/Opt and it recognizes the disk but it doesn't seem to load anything from it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Migration From Disk To Disk On The Same Computer?

Jun 21, 2012

I have a Mac Pro early 2009.  On the original start up disk (1 TB) I have Snow Leopard.  I have a 2 TB disk also installed on the same machine.  I want to upgrade the machine to Lion and have everything end up on the 2 TB disk as the start up disk.  I was then planning on reformatting the original start up disk and use it for Windows 7 in Boot Camp.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Turn Off Encryption And Reformat Disk

Jun 19, 2012

OS-X Lion I now have two useless FW800 external disk drives because I cannot turn off encryption and reformat the disk. (30 years ago, in DOS, this was called a "low level format".)I think I need to use Terminal commands diskutil eraseDisk or diskutil partitionDisk but nether of those commands work. Apparently, I cannot format the command correctly or diskutil cannot remove an encrypted partition.

OS X Mavericks :: Unable To Repair Or Unmount Disk To Reformat

Jun 20, 2014

I have a Macbook pro 17" (2011) running Mavericks with a Crucial 960Gb SSD and a 750Gb WDC in the optical bay. My ssd is divided into 710 Gb to OS X and 182 Gb to Windows 7 Bootcamp. All was well until the other day when the OS X partition failed to boot. I got the grey screen and the very slow progress bar which after 15  minutes powered the machine off. The Bootcamp partion continues to work without issues. I booted from an install disk and ran disk utility. The OS X partition appears greyed out on the left panel. I attempt a repair disk and after a 15  minute delay it says it is unable to repair the last action being "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required". Its all backed up regularly on time machine but when I boot an install usb and attempt to restore from time machine, the OSX disk does not appear as an option. I go back into disk utility and attemp to erase/repartition the disk to start a new install but it refuses to unmount. I appear to be running out of options,

OS X Mavericks :: How To Reformat Single Partition Without Reformatting Entire Disk

Aug 22, 2014

Is it possible to reformat a single partition of a disk w/o reformatting the entire disk?Or must one reformat the entire disk? In DU, If I click on the volume/partition in question, I do NOT get the tab “Partition.”  If I click on the disk, not just the volume/partition in question , then I do get the tab “Partition.” Also, does using DU to secure erase a volume by overwriting with 0s, cause a format issue? OS X :: Computer Seemed To Be Overloading From The Applications And Performed A Emergency Shut Down?

Nov 12, 2009

I was doing software update today when all of a sudden my computer seemed to be overloading from the apps I was running prior...After 10 minutes of "Circle of Death" I performed a emergency shut down. (Probably not the best idea) Afterwards I restarted and was stuck on the main loading screen, (Apple with grey swirling circle) I left this for about 20 minutes came back to check on it and nothing had happened, several restarts with no new conclusion.I popped in the startup disk and ran a diagnostic on it with everything coming back fine...What the heck do I do now?
