I have a question which I am quite unsure. I am shopping for a HDD drive (Western Digital My Book 3 TB) and was told that it cannot be reformatted to be compatible with TIme Machine.
I would like to verify if it is true.

So i put the OSX disk in (10.3) and when i make it boot from the disk the mac logo pops up then it shifts a quarter inch to the right and freezes. I then tried booting it normally and pressed the install button now it boots off the CD automatically with the same result and can't be turned off. Is there an emergency disk remove thing for a powerbook G4? And is there a way to reformat my computer without the disk?

I set up a 32g partition for windows xp pro. Loaded the disk and formated the partition to FAT. Hold option at startup and load windows. Upon loading windows i get the following message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." I have tried leaving the xp disk in, I have tried taking it out before loading windows and putting it in afterwords, nothing works. I can not eject disk while in windows.

I have a 13" white macbook with leopard on it that I got about 2 years ago. Anyway, the other day I was cleaning stuff I didn't need anymore off it and I somehow accidentally moved the "library" folder that's in the "system" folder in to the trash. I tried removing it but it wouldn't let me, then my mac froze and I restarted and it just showed the Apple logo while flashing an anti-logo and a folder with a question mark on it. I took it to the Genius bar and the guy asked me if I had my files backed up and I said no, but he told me a way I could back them up on my girlfriend's mac using a fire cable and then just reformat it myself. So I bought the cable and put the files on my girflriend's mac. However, now when I'm trying to reformat it from the installer disk, it doesn't seem to be working. It shows the Apple logo and the loading gear underneath and then it switches to that anti-logo (circle with slash through it) and the loading gear continues. I let it run like this all night but still no change. I tried resetting the PRAM and other things. I've held C and held D to run a hardware test and it says there are no problems. I've held Alt/Opt and it recognizes the disk but it doesn't seem to load anything from it.

Disk Utility will not work because the faulty partition prevents unmounting of the disk.

OS-X Lion I now have two useless FW800 external disk drives because I cannot turn off encryption and reformat the disk. (30 years ago, in DOS, this was called a "low level format".)I think I need to use Terminal commands diskutil eraseDisk or diskutil partitionDisk but nether of those commands work. Apparently, I cannot format the command correctly or diskutil cannot remove an encrypted partition.

Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I have a Macbook pro 17" (2011) running Mavericks with a Crucial 960Gb SSD and a 750Gb WDC in the optical bay. My ssd is divided into 710 Gb to OS X and 182 Gb to Windows 7 Bootcamp. All was well until the other day when the OS X partition failed to boot. I got the grey screen and the very slow progress bar which after 15 minutes powered the machine off. The Bootcamp partion continues to work without issues. I booted from an install disk and ran disk utility. The OS X partition appears greyed out on the left panel. I attempt a repair disk and after a 15 minute delay it says it is unable to repair the last action being "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required". Its all backed up regularly on time machine but when I boot an install usb and attempt to restore from time machine, the OSX disk does not appear as an option. I go back into disk utility and attemp to erase/repartition the disk to start a new install but it refuses to unmount. I appear to be running out of options,

I recently bought a macbook pro and am making the transition from a pc to mac. It's all gone well so far, but I'm not sure what to do with my music. I currently have about 200 gb of music on my external hard drive (connected to my pc.) The internal hard drive on my pc does not have space to accomodate the files on my external.
I do not have the "Copy files to iTunes music folder" currently enabled because my internal doesn't have space. (And I like having the original music files in a separate location as I have over 30,000 songs). I don't know how to transfer my external and music to my macbook, since I will have to reformat the drive (which would erase everything on it, therefore I somehow have to make a backup either on my mac or on my pc. but what to do about the iTunes .xml file and iTunes folder on the internal pc drive??).

Is it possible to reformat a single partition of a disk w/o reformatting the entire disk?Or must one reformat the entire disk? In DU, If I click on the volume/partition in question, I do NOT get the tab “Partition.” If I click on the disk, not just the volume/partition in question , then I do get the tab “Partition.” Also, does using DU to secure erase a volume by overwriting with 0s, cause a format issue? Some details on my other post:Create a bootable clone using Disk Utility

I am trying to bootcamp win7 on my iMac (2010), it's saying there's an error, and that I need to reformat the HDD first, then try to bootcamp. So if I understand it correctly, I need to backup my OSx, then reformat using diskutil? Then partition, and install OSx, then when that is all set, install the windows, right?

So I have an external firewire drive I use for all my Time Machine backups in OS X. It's formatted in the typical Mac journaled format or whatever it is. I have 2 partitions, one with my Time Machine backup. I booted in Windows 7, and intended to reformat the other partition to work with Windows, but it didn't want to let me change that partition, though it did recognize it as an OS X format.

I recently tried to install a back-up copy of Leopard onto a USB hard drive, as a precautionary measure if my drive ever did die. I had partitioned my drive into 3. One for the Leopard Boot (Mac OS Extended Journaled), one for Apps (Mac OS Extended Journaled) and one for files (FAT 32).
The installation pooped out on me, probably due to the amount of free space available.
Earlier this week, I decided to reformat the drive into 1 partition. Unfortunately I ran into a spot of bother....

I plan on buying a new MBP this week and I am going to sell my old macbook to a friend of a friend. I seemed to have misplaced my Snow Leopard discs somewhere and was wondering if I could use the new disks with my new computer to reformat my drive? If not, are there any other options short of paying $30 to re-buy SL for this machine?

On my vista / xp machines, I have several external hard drives, Seagate, WD, HP, and 1 enclosure kit which contains some old internal hard drive.I don't really need all these drives on my VISTA/XP machines, as I'm trying to migrate to MAC.
I mostly use my mac for photos & creating home movies. So backing up the priceless pictures of my kids is critical.Do I really need to buy a MAC based external hard drive? or can i simply reformat one of my old drives to use on my mac. I know macs have their own file system (as pc's have fat32&ntfs).
Will apple time machine work with a generic re-formatted external hard drive.I also notice their are fewer choices for MAC ready external hard drives ...less specials than PC based externals.

How do you reformat a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.3) 2011s Hard drive? I already backed up all the files I wanted to save. But since I have the new Macbook pro 2011 (only a few months since I got it) it didn't come with an installation disc, but instead already came with all the applications. I'm wondering how to reformat the hard drive so it wipes out everything and I can start fresh and what would happen to all the applications?

I have a 1 TB Lacie external drive. it was originally formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted). It also might have been formatted as a bootable drive, but I am not certain. Today I mounted the drive, entered the decrypt key and want to re-format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I am using Disk Utility to do this. When I click on Erase within Disk Utility, I get this error: I am using Mac OS X Mavericks. how to fix this so that I can re-format the drive?

I've never done anything but plug a HD in and get right to work. Now that I've got an Apple, I'm a total nervous Nellie.I just got a WD external hard drive that is FAT32. I understand that the Mac can read/write this format. Would you recommend that I change it to HFS+ or should I leave well enough alone?

I have since attached it to my PC, but do not know how to erase/reformat on a PC (I'm a Mac user that only uses my PC for running specific programs). How can I erase this hard drive and reformat it?
