OS X :: Unable To Remove Time Machine Partition / This Startup Disk Is Not Supported

Sep 22, 2010

I had my hard drive partitioned via bootcamp to run windows vista. I use software at work that isn't supported by Mac (it is now, but our version is old and it costs 10k to upgrade yada yada yada). One night I was playing around with the time machine feature (had the macbook for three years now never touched it, wish i hadn't) and accidentally told the time machine to use the partition made by bootcamp for windows to back up my mac. Well this messed everything up. Now that partition is gone (windows) and that volume is now called time machine backups. I have used some threads in here to try and remove that and nothing seems to work (most of the threads are from 2007 to 2008).

What I need help with is removing that time machine volume so that I can run bootcamp again to reinstall windows. When I attempt to run bootcamp right now it says "This startup disk is not supported." When I restart and hold option only the mac hd is available to choose. I also use(d) VMware Fusion to run Windows.

Intel Mac :: Remove 360 Controller Daemon From Startup Items

Does anyone know how to remove 360 Controller Driver Daemon from the Startup Items on an iMac? I downloaded this so I could use an Xbox 360 wireless controller for Onlive but since downloading this I get a conflicting driver error when I load up Onlive. I thought I'd deleted this from my mac but I can still see this sitting in System Information/ Software/ Startup Items but I can't remove from here. It does not display in my System Preferences to allow me to remove from the Startup Items?

Software :: Temporary Files Re-appeared After Deleting - Startup Disk Full

Dec 23, 2007

I keep getting the "Startup Disk is almost full" error message even though I know I had plenty of available memory. After searching the forums here, I downloaded Cocktail and cleared the caches, logs, and temporary files. I made hidden files visible, and I found in /private/var/tmp tons of files have been written taking up every bit of available space, even after running Cocktail's chron. A sample filename is 476deede776c8. I deleted these files, rebooted my computer, and I had the space back. BUT, this morning, when I started up, the memory disappeared again and these type of files were again gobbling up my disk space.

I booted from the system install disk to run disk utility. It says my hard disk is fine, but I can't repair permissions. Something about no packets or invalid packets.

I just went through the motions again with Cocktail and deleted the over 5Gb of temporary files, and so far, so good, but what can I do to stop this from continuing to happen?

These problems started after trying to download some printer drivers from HP's website, which was so slow I halted the downloads and cancelled them. I tried installing the one driver that downloaded, and onto a different user than the root system, as per HP's recommendation. This meant I had to use the system install disk to reset my passwords because my password wasn't working. I don't know if any of these actions caused the problem, are part of the problem, or are a separate problem. I can't afford to spend an hour a day, 2 or 3 times a day, erasing these pesky files so I can use my boot drive. Any advice, specific directions, and/or explanations are desperately needed.

I am running Mac OS 10.3.9 on a PowerMac G4 450Mhz, 800Mb RAM. I was using Firefox when the problems started.

Intel Mac :: HD Missing On Startup Disk

May 24, 2012

I didn't just lose my harddrive. My 2007 iMac with Leopard froze up yesterday and it looks like I need a new hard-drive.But I thought I'd try to follow the support info to reboot it with the startup disk so that I could try to backup the files.I inserted the disk, pressed C on startup, and worked my way to disk utilities.I clicked on the Macintosh HD on the left side and clicked "repair disk." and after a couple minutes I got an error message saying that the repair failed.Ok, so then I stopped, but then noticed that the "Macintosh HD" on the left side is now in grey color print. And when I click on it, it looks like there is 0 bytes on it.Did I just lose my entire hard-drive?? Please tell me that there is some hope. I was having problems with backing up my info onto my WD Mybook through TimeMachine, so it's been over a year since that was last done. I am merely trying to retrieve files from the last year from my hard-drive before I have a new one installed. I'm dropping off the computer in the morning with an Apple 3rd party consultant to try and retrieve what he can from my hard-drive. I just want to know if I just made things worse.

Intel Mac :: Its Not Seeing Firewire Startup Disk

Jun 17, 2012

Ive made an OS bootable super duper backup of my white intel imac (late 2006) 10.6.8 onto a WD My Book Studio 2TB (GUID partioned)  and although the drive appears to be running fine from the OS its not being seen as a startup drive when connected via usb or firewire (with an 800 to 400 adapter) after holding down the option key at startup. I tested the startup drive capability on a newer imac running 10.7.4 and it shows up as a viable startup drive when holding option at boot up and plugged in via firewire.

why the older imac might not be picking up the drive at bootup with option key pressed?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Clearing Hidden Backup Files From Startup Disk, Time Machine?

Apr 9, 2012

Moved all my movies audio etc and stored on external HDD, but as I have lion and time machine it saved a local back up so that when time machine was synced it didn't miss anything.Seems sensible, so next step was to sync time machine, expecting that the local back up would disappear when it shifted to TM. It didn't...why in gods green earth is the local back up there even though TM connected the whole time and up to date?  I've restarted, loaded all updates and verified disk. How do I get to the "it just works" part without having to Delete this double up (32GB "backups") via terminal etc....
