OS X Mavericks :: How To Reformat Single Partition Without Reformatting Entire Disk

Is it possible to reformat a single partition of a disk w/o reformatting the entire disk?Or must one reformat the entire disk? In DU, If I click on the volume/partition in question, I do NOT get the tab “Partition.” If I click on the disk, not just the volume/partition in question , then I do get the tab “Partition.” Also, does using DU to secure erase a volume by overwriting with 0s, cause a format issue? Got my first MacBook Pro about 2 months ago and I have been enjoying it to full effect, installing programs such as logic studio and photoshop cs5 on it. Recently, however, I decided that I would like to access some of my windows based programs when I am on the road and don't have my desktop pc with me. So I bought a fresh copy of 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate and sat at my macbook, put the disc in and then loaded up Boot Camp. I went through the menu options, decided that I wanted a 50GB partition, leaving my Mac OS drive at 182 GB with 83GB to spare. However, when I started partitioning, after about a minute it stopped and this error message appeared: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.".
I tried cleaning all my temporary files and deleting some files in my downloads that were quite large and I restarted my machine. The problem persisted. Is there a solution to this problem that does not involve doing all this rubbish with a fresh install of Mac OS? I don't have any method of backup apart from a couple of 4GB flash drives..

As soon as I start the Bootcamp assistant I get this message on the screen that asks for download of the windows support files - ie right at the start.The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

I have a Macbook pro 17" (2011) running Mavericks with a Crucial 960Gb SSD and a 750Gb WDC in the optical bay. My ssd is divided into 710 Gb to OS X and 182 Gb to Windows 7 Bootcamp. All was well until the other day when the OS X partition failed to boot. I got the grey screen and the very slow progress bar which after 15 minutes powered the machine off. The Bootcamp partion continues to work without issues. I booted from an install disk and ran disk utility. The OS X partition appears greyed out on the left panel. I attempt a repair disk and after a 15 minute delay it says it is unable to repair the last action being "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required". Its all backed up regularly on time machine but when I boot an install usb and attempt to restore from time machine, the OSX disk does not appear as an option. I go back into disk utility and attemp to erase/repartition the disk to start a new install but it refuses to unmount. I appear to be running out of options,

I am trying to sell my laptop and recently did a 7-pass erase on the 128GB SSD in my MBA on Snow Leopard.
All went well, including the OS install. When I look at the disc size it shows it at just under 122GB.
What happened to the other 7GB? How can I be sure I'm not leaving any personal information on it that may be retrieved?

I decided I want to make my Mac HD one whole partition again but I don't know how to do it. I had tried using boot camp, but it was giving me an error. So I cloned my HD and now I've booted into the clone and am wondering how I can delete everything on the Mac HD and reformat it into just one partition. I tried searching but couldn't find it.

I've got a Mac Pro (early 2008 edition) and I installed Windows 7 via boot camp. I no longer use the OSX on the main partition because I boot OSX on this computer from an external drive.
I would like to format the main partition (where my old OSX is) so I can use it for file storage from both OSX and Windows, but I'm afraid I might screw up the boot capabilities by doing so. Can anyone confirm that my Windows 7 boot camp partition will still boot successfully after formatting my old OSX partition to FAT32 (or whatever makes the most sense)?

I've always just read them, but I need specific help this time! I have a 1st generation 13" white macbook with 2gb of ram and a 2ghz processor. I upgraded my internal hard drive to a 500 gb hard drive, and when I did that - for some reason, the default partitioning table was an apple partition. Now that I'm trying to install Snow Leopard, it says I need a guid partitioning table. I've cloned everything to an external drive, and I'm ready to reformat the partition table of my internal hdd to guid, but disk utility can't unmount the disk.

A while back i decided to get bootcamp up and running on my macbook. that's all and good except i made it a 20gig partition, which is good for practically nothing. i would like to increase it to 50 gigs or so and my computer wont let me do that. So i've decided to go with a back up on a 500GB western Digital Elements and start over new.

Despite reading several post saying its not supported by Apple, i decided to give a try on installing Win7 on my MP 1,1 and stumbled through some unexpected problems. First I used BootCamp3 and split one of my HDs into winBC partition/Mac partition, then restarted Windows 7 install. I stumbled into the first problem which was the installer, after reformating the BC partition, displayed an error code, 0x80300024, a hard drive problem error in fact. The solution to this was quite simple, the BCpartition was on drive#4in slot #4, i had to move this drive to slot#2, then the installation runned smoothly. When rebooting and starting Windows for the first time (finishing the installation), I saw the Windows animated logo then the screen went black and hanged and lead to a BSOD. The message is 0x00000116, a graphic problem. I tried booting in safe mode but it says I need to let Windows 7 installation finish before booting safe mode and since i cannot finish it, beacause of that BSOD... So its a no go for now. I ran into instructions 'Instead, restart and press a key to boot from the Windows 7 disc when prompted. Rather than running the installation again, choose the little option at the bottom to Repair your computer. Decline any suggestions that pop up until you see a list of options with Command Prompt at the bottom. Choose that option. At the Command Prompt, type DEL C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERSATIKMDAG.SYS to delete the default ATI driver, then close the window and reboot. This time, Windows should successfully initialise a more appropriate display driver, allowing you into the desktop.'at [URL:...]These instructions are for the BC problems on the Imac, not the MacPro. However i ran into the same problems, so i tried the same solution. Unfortunately, the Dos command does not work. I feel the installation is close at hand, and very possible, we'll see later for the Bootcamp xtensions, Has anyone stumbled upon the same problem/ or has a remedy?

I have a 320GB internal drive on my Intel Mac Mini. I tried to make a windows partition using Boot Camp. After I dragged the slider to select the partition size (100GB) and hit 'next' it didn't work. A message came up and basically said it failed. I don't remember what the message was exactly, something like "Verification failed. Some files could not be moved." But now, my Mini thinks it only has a 220GB drive. I open Disk Utility and I tried to reformat but it will only go to 220GB. It seems I lost the other 100GB.

I would like to reformat my previously partitioned startup drive into a single partition. (G4 dual 533 running OS 10.4.11) I have carbon-cloned the startup drive contents to an external fire-wire drive which I hope to re-transfer back after reformatting my original drive into a single partition. I have designated the fire-wire drive to be the new startup disc.

I have a 3 TB disk that I used for video files that I now want to use for backup. So I wanted to erase and partition the drive to wipe it clean. So after going into Disk Utility and "trying" to erase and partition the drive, it now only shows the drive and no volumes.I cannot create or partition volumes. I tried verifying and repairing the disc but that didn't do anything. The only buttons available are Verify, Info and Burn. What do I do to use the drive again?

I have a 10 GB encrypted disk image on my macbook (type OS Extended (journaled)). I've pretty much filled up the space so I want to resize. I go into disk utility with the disk unmounted and 'Resized' it to 20GB. Then I mount it and go into the Partition tab. I drag the corner all the way down to fill up the space and hit Apply. It goes through the motions without error but it does not actually extend the partition to the resize. On the right next it then says something to the effect that the disk is read only and cannot resize the partition. The write status is read/write until I click apple....then it switches to 'Unmounted, read-only'.

I wish to change partition scheme, sizes, in an external drive. All the partitions are MacOS extended (Journaled) and they map, according to the layout in Disk Utility, as follows: Partion 1, 2, 3,4 where 1 is at the top and 4, the bottom. I want to make partition 2 larger, so I decreased partition 1 by half. Now the layout is 1 a, 1b, 2,3,4., where 1b is now free space. Disk Utility will not allow me to increase the size of partition 2 by dragging the corner. Which of the following options (if any) will allow me to increase the size of partition 2, without erasing the data, using Disk Utility:Select partition 2 and manually writing a new value in the size box, equal to the present partition’s size plus the free space?If I delete partition 1 completely, will I then be able to increase the size of partition 2?If I delete partitions 1, 3, and 4, will I then be allowed to increase the size of partion 2?Is there another option?
(Actually, partition 3 is an eDrive, a data recovery utility created by TechTool Pro 7, so I don’t really know how it’s formatted.)

Did a fresh Bootcamp install of Windows 7 on my MBA running 10.9.4, switched back and forth a few times and now the BOOTCAMP partition doesn't show up in the left pane in Finder. I hopped into Disk Utility to see what was going on and it was there, just not mounted, so I clicked mount, was told it couldn't be mounted, and it suggested I run first aid on it. I clicked Verify, nothing useful to me, then Repair, and got quite a lot of feedback that I do not understand, and then after that it was still unmountable.
I tried to copy everything it said into a pastebin because it was very long with lots of starting and stopping and counting percents inbetween, but it was over 500kb and that's the limit for free users on pastebin, so here's a trimmed version. [URL] .... I tried booting into Windows after that, and it jumped into System Repair. Apparently, according to Windows, my Boot Manager is missing or corrupt... and since I still can't access it from the Mac side of things, I thought I'd just wipe the partition in BootCamp Utility and start over.
Except instead, I get this error: "Your disk could not be restored to a single partition.An error occurred while restoring the disk to a single partition."
Disk Utility let me wipe it but I still can't mount it, either, again suggesting I run first aid on it (this does nothing). I can't boot into the Mac's Recovery mode either. It just jumps straight to Internet Recovery. When I hold option upon boot, all three partitions show up (Mac, Recovery, Windows), but when I click the recovery one it loads for a bit and then the laptop just instantly shuts off.... Have I corrupted my internal harddrive perchance?

So i put the OSX disk in (10.3) and when i make it boot from the disk the mac logo pops up then it shifts a quarter inch to the right and freezes. I then tried booting it normally and pressed the install button now it boots off the CD automatically with the same result and can't be turned off. Is there an emergency disk remove thing for a powerbook G4? And is there a way to reformat my computer without the disk?

So I have an external firewire drive I use for all my Time Machine backups in OS X. It's formatted in the typical Mac journaled format or whatever it is. I have 2 partitions, one with my Time Machine backup. I booted in Windows 7, and intended to reformat the other partition to work with Windows, but it didn't want to let me change that partition, though it did recognize it as an OS X format.

I have an early 2006 iMac with the notorious GPU issues so after replacing it with a new Mac Mini it's time to sell the iMac for parts. I'm trying to reformat the hard drive with no success - I boot off of the original Mac OS X 10.4.4 CD, launch Disk Utility, but whenever I try to erase the disk or delete the partition the program freezes. I've even tried using GParted Live! CD to delete the partition and the same thing happens - whenever I assess it, it locks GParted as well! Funny thing is, I can still boot off of the hard drive just fine.I should mention that the hard drive has 10.5.8 installed - perhaps there's an incompatibility between Disk Utility 10.4 and the installed OS?

I wiped out my hfs+ partition (don't ask me how, suffice it to say that me, the computer nerd, made a STUPID mistake). I have my Tiger install disc. I need SOME way (possibly from a Windows partition?) to format only a SINGLE partition to hfs+ (I already have the unallocated space ready to be formatted) without losing any other data, as I no longer have a way to re-install Windows if I wipe it out, and I need Windows (I just don't want to ONLY have Windows!)

Disk Utility Crashed whilst creating a Partition, and I now have ~100GB missing, which was the amount I had allocated to the new partition.
The new partition didn't get created, and I now have 100GB missing from the Hard drive. I have a 1TB hard drive, and when I go to Disk Utility, it says: Capacity : 999.35 GB (999,345,127,424 Bytes)Available : 586.1 GB (586,103,844,864 Bytes)Used : 310.52 GB (310,524,317,696 Bytes)
Which adds up to about ~900GB.
I tried Repairing Disk in Disk Utility, booting into Recovery Mode and Repairing Disk there, but neither made a difference.

I've been trying to install xp pro sp2 using boot camp on a macbook 2.2Ghz. It does the initial setup where i reformat the xp partition in fat32 and then when it goes to boot into the xp installer it says: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>system32hal.dll. please re-install a copy of the above file.

My MacBook Air (running Mavericks) was acting up a tad so I ran Disk Utilities. Basically I got told that repairs were needed but that they couldn't be fixed. DU told me to backup what I could and reformat the HD.
What's the best way to do this? Will restoring from a Time Machine back up bring back whatever issue was there to begin with? Same question for a SuperDuper clone. If I copy across the Music, Photos etc folders to an external disk and just copy them back over once the reformat and OSS X install is done will this mess up any of the music or photo libraries or indexing (I know iPhoto and iTunes have their own special waif managing individual photos etc).
