Intel Mac :: New 21" Monitor For Old Mac Mini?
Apr 1, 2012At present my computer is an old PPC eMac with OS X 10.4.11. I want to buy an up-to-date 21" iMac. (I can't afford either the cost or the space for a 27" one.) But I have a mass of software and of files (a host of articles, etc., in that old warhorse, AppleWorks, for instance, and the scores of my musical compositions in an old version of Finale) which, for reasons it would be tedious to go into here, I cannot update so that they would work in the iMac.Â
If I buy the iMac, I want, for reasons of space, to get rid of my present eMac. But I have the offer of an old PPC Mac Mini with the same OS as my present eMac, to which I could transfer the contents of my present eMac hard disk. If I were to do that, I would want to use the new iMac as a monitor for the Mini. On the face of it, this cannot be achieved with the 21" iMac (only with the 27" iMac).Â
Is there any software or other adaptor-device that would permit this? I have looked at the EyeTV website, and it looks to me as if that is not what I would need.

Mar 24, 2012Does anyone know how to remove a foreign object from the DVD/CD disk drive. I've accidently put a digital camera card in this drive and can't get it out. It won't eject because it doesn't recognise it. I've tried putting a DVD in to see if it would eject with that put it just ejects the DVD.

Jul 2, 2012By mistake I now have two Skype volumes on my hard disk. As soon as I click on the icon on my desktop the 'Trash' is changed to an eject icon. Trying different methods all result in some message preventing the delete option. I also have similar difficulties deleting a downloaded GraphicsConverter app.

Mar 23, 2012With my 'old' Intel iMac using a Display Port adapter, my 24" LG Monitor would be detected correctly and worked first time. With my new 2011 iMac 27 using a genuine Apple mini DisplayPort adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port, this same monitor now shows up as a generic VGA monitor and the range of resolutions is severely reduced - basically it looks terrible. I've tried disconnecting the cable, reconnecting, using the second Thunderbolt, changing resolutions, detecting displays, showing displays in the menu bar. All with no success.

MacBook :: Can't Make Monitor On Mini Display Port Primary Monitor?
Aug 18, 2010I have a fresh install of Windows XP, service pack 2 on a boot camp partition on my macbook (13" first gen aluminum case) and a Apple LED Cinema Display attached to the mini display port.
I can't seem to make the Cinema Display the primary display (the "Use this device as the primary monitor" checkbox is always greyed out in the Display Property Settings tab). I also can't shut the macbook lid and continue to use it closed (with kb, mouse and monitor attached) like I would when booting OSX.
Is there some other way to make the Cinema Display the primary monitor, so I can leave the macbook closed when booting into Windows?
Software :: Intel Mac Mini Won't See External For Start Up Disk?
Sep 4, 2009I have a new Leopard Mac Mini that I was hoping to be able to use to run 10.3.9 and 10.4.11 systems off my external.
I made sure to format the external (with 2 partitions) as GUID before I copied the older OS's onto it. But when I go to choose one as start up disk, the Mini won't give me either of them as an option.
Is this a basic conflict between old OS and new Intel architecture, or is there hope for me?

Sep 8, 2006So i put the OSX disk in (10.3) and when i make it boot from the disk the mac logo pops up then it shifts a quarter inch to the right and freezes. I then tried booting it normally and pressed the install button now it boots off the CD automatically with the same result and can't be turned off. Is there an emergency disk remove thing for a powerbook G4? And is there a way to reformat my computer without the disk?

Jun 23, 2010The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable).The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results.The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

Feb 23, 2009Just bought a Samsung 2333SW Monitor and plugged it into my Mac Mini. The screen looks like the monitor was dropped (psychedelic) when the desktop is displayed. It worked fine on my 17" Samsung monitor, but not the 23".
I exchanged the monitor, and its not the monitor. I was told its the driver on the Mac. I cannot find any driver online for my Mini through Apple, or even at the Samsung sites.

Aside from apple.com tutorials and playing around a few times at my local BestBuy I know very little about using them (or any computer for that matter). Between this forum, available books, and ease of use I figure it'll all work out. I do have a couple of specific questions and would greatly appreciate some advice.For me I have to go mini because I have an eye disease, and some other eye related issues that make me extremely sensitive to the LED backlit glossy displays that the imac and macbooks use. Even when dimmed. So I have no choice if I am to own a mac now, it's mac mini or nothing.

Dec 15, 2009I am getting an i7 iMac in the near future (ordered yesterday, won't arrive til Jan. 3rd ) And I am getting it stock with just the 4gigs of ram, and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, but I probably will at some point when prices come down. Anyway, I use photoshop some (not a power user or anything but I use it for some stuff) and I was wondering if you could use a mini sd card as a scratch disk, and if you can, is it a good idea? Thoughts/opinions/comments.
On to my HD question: should I pay apple to upgrade my HD to the 2TB drive? I think I will definitely fill up the 1TB so I'd like the extra space, but would prefer to buy the drive from ifixit or owc or something to save some cash, but the thought of having to remove the huge glass screen with suction cups and disconnecion the LCD seems a little daunting so I was wondering if I should just save myself the hassle and get the upgrade done by mac (it'd be $225 instead of $250 because I get the student discount) Of course I'd lose out on the 1TB HD that I could later stick in to an external HD enclosure, so its a pretty big hit in terms of cash.
From watching the teardown on ifixit changing he HD looks like it could be a little tricky, but I'd like some input from you guys. I am pretty tech savy (former PC user so I've replaced a lot of components like ram, video cards, HDs, ec cetera) but getting past the wall of glass is daunting, but I may just be hyping it up, so I wanted some input.
Third and finally, I got the wired keyboard because I wanted a # pad but I just found out my old Logitech G13 has mac drivers so I was thinking of switching to the wireless one just so I could have a wireless mouse + keyboard for when I want to watch a movie or something from further away, though ideally I think I'd prefer a keyboard with a built in track pad or track ball, but I don't really want to fork out the cash for it now. So is there any advantage of the wired numeric apple keyboard compared to the Logitech one? I can still control media, I have a remote, and it can do expose and screens and all that good stuff. But as always I wanted to make sure I wasn't over looking anything.

May 26, 2012My mac mini will not eject the cd. I partitioned the drive in order to install windows (cuz portions of our system are not Mac compatible). When I inserted the windows CD and rebooted, the mini only boots to a prompt but will not accept any commands from any input devices (none, zip, zero, nada, zilch). I need to be able to remove the CD that is now stuck without the use of external devices or figure out how to get the machine to recognize a command (external keyboard inputs are not working or recognized).

Feb 29, 2012This is a Mac Mini operating on OS 10.58. I have a CD in the combo drive, and it apparently has something recorded on it. I think this CD had started to be burned and I stopped it. The computer indicates that this CD is not blank. The result is that it will not eject, even after several attempts using the small eject arrow at the top of the desktop, the use of apple-E, and after repeated efforts with a complete shutdown -- still the disk is stuck in the drive. I suspect that it's in a loop situation, where it tries to run the CD with not effect, but it also cannot eject it.Â
I notice a small black square, appearing to be black plastic, at the far right end of the CD/DVD player slot at the top of the Mac Mini. In the old days there was such a hole into which one could stick a straight wire, like a heavy duty straightened paper clip, and it would physically eject a stuck disk. Is there such a thing on this Mac Mini?Â

Mac Mini :: IPad As A Monitor For "headless" Mini?
Jun 15, 2010With the announcement of the new Mini's, I'm considering selling my MBP and ATV and replacing them with a new Mini and iPad.
My wife already has an iPad so it would be great to solely control the Mini with our iPads but do you new a keyboard and mouse for initial installation or at any point after? It really would be a waste of money to have to buy them just to get the thing running.
Is there an app out there that can act a full BT keyboard if need be? Rowmote looks pretty sweet for day-to-day use.
That said, I don't think the Mini would get much use, the iPads would be our main net/mail/cal/etc companions, the Mini would simply be the mothership, holding all our music, videos, etc. I still need a full computer for all my photo and home movie editing, otherwise I'd consider a beaten up old powerbook or iBook.
Also, what would be the advantage of getting OSX Server? If it helps, we have no other computers in the house, only 2 iPhones and 2 iPads (potentially).

Oct 29, 2009When I download a program or application, can I drag the disk image to the trash and eject the installer. This is an incredibly noob question, I know.
I just always end up with these random duplicate files and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
