I have a problem...my 12" Powerbook G4 doesn't start up properly at the moment. I turn it on, I can hear the chime, and the screen goes grey but then does nothing...I've tried holding down C while starting up too, but still nothing happens, just the grey screen.
View 5 RepliesMy G4 powerbook has been saying recently that the start up disk is full, so i tried to empty some stuff off it. But not long after this when i tried booting it up the normal happens at first ie the t'ing' start up sound and the apple sign with the little timer going round but it does nothing else, it just carries on going round. I have tried re setting it and looked on help sites like this to try and override it etc but nothing seems to work!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a sort of beat up 1.5GHz 12" PowerBook G4, top of the line, and it arrived today. It boots up normally when the apple appears, then it shows the blue screen and then the mouse turns into a spinning wheel. Also, when I move the cursor, a second cursor from the same spot stays in the top-left corner. The PowerBook will only work normally as a headless server (powers on, lid closed), unless booted in safe mode. Another issue is the screen. The seller said there were lines going up and down the screen, but it varies depending on what is displayed on the screen. If the screen is grey or in target-disk mode, they do not appear, but on the 10.5 standard desktop pic, it changes pattern. The lines can be seen here: [URL]
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with my PowerBook G4. It wouldn't turn on at all before, so I installed another motherboard. Now it will power on, but it only shows this folder icon that blinks. I'm a complete n00b to macs. If this were a PC I would of fixed it by now. I need some help. I've tried the installation disk, but when I hold down the C key, it takes longer, but it just shows that folder again. When I hold down the Option key, it only gives me a reload button, and an arrow button, but no boot up options. Do you think it could be a problem with this other used motherboard? Or is it that I just didn't put it in right? I've double checked all the hardware, and it seems to be all connected. The keyboard lights up, and the trackpad works, and it makes the boot-up sound.
View 8 Replies View RelatedIt just started getting really hot quickly for about a week before it didn't turn on. I would have it tilted so that its not flat, hoping that it would give it more air but it didn't do anything. I don't even need to do much to get it really hot. And I shut it off every night, so it should get to reset itself. I haven't done anything different that I haven't before. Any fixes please!? Also what's really weird is that it gets hotter and hotter even when it is off and not even plugged in.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'
The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.
Here's the rundown: my uncle gave me a pristine Powerbook G4 Titanium edition. Good computer, 15.5" screen, definitely worth keeping. He wiped the thing clean before giving it to me. The problem is the internal CD drive is super flaky and won't take an bootable CD well. It took my Tiger bootable once or twice and bonked out during the installation. Now, I can't get anything. BUT, I have a nice external firewire 400 CD/DVD drive. I hit option and can see the disc, but the PB won't take it. Also, of course I hit C on startup to try and load from the CD. Hasn't taken since the first few tries.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSome days ago i finally added a Powerbook g4 to my Mac collection and since then ive been trying to fix this computer without any results. The Powerbook had the battery dead at first and i had to replace it with a new one i had. Now the problem/weird thing is that the computer detects the battery but it doesnt charge. It has about 18% of the charge and when i try to boot up all i hear is like a fan sound and nothing more, no boot up sound and no image on the screen.
If i boot up using the power cable thats when i see the 18% of the battery icon, but as soon as i take out the power cord, the image goes black although the computer still makes sounds as if it was on. Does it have any solution? PS: ive tried to reset the PMU,changed the pRam for a new one, reset the Nvram.
i dropped my powerbook and now it doesn't work. i charged it and tried powering it on but nothing happened. however i connected my ipod and it got charged.
View 10 Replies View RelatedA friend was just given a PowerBook G4 in perfect condition (seemingly). It has just been sitting on a shelf for several years and worked fine before it was shelved.
Now when she plugs it in, the orange light on the cord lights up orange, but when she tries to boot the machine, nothing happens. I mean nothing.
Is there something simple that this could be? Wondering if there is a little battery inside that is needed that could have gone dead over the years of idle sitting, or something like that. I just don't know PowerBooks very well.

A couple of days ago started to occasionally make a clank clank noise and getting stacked on the spinning colour circle, only manual restart would do it.
Thought it might be the hard disk as it is a bit old and i never replaced anything on it, shacked it and a noise of something loose would happen, so i thought of opening it up and see if i could reattach anything loose....anyway i started unscrewing following instructions, couldn't get memory out...every screw seems different and so i gave up, put it all back together, praying that the screws are all in their right places and hey, now it wont even start, not a loose sound when shaken though, but not a bip not a light, black screen, nothing...only sign of life is the green light under the num block key and the capitals arrow also starts light
I put my PowerBook to sleep and left home with it about an hour ago. I just opened it and it woke up but the screen was black. I turned it off and back on. The white screen with the apple and progress wheel came on for a normal period of time, but then the screen went all white and there were several uneven horizontal lines across the middle and froze there. I forced a restart and the same thing happened but this time I got the semi transparent window that says need to restart. I did that and I got the same screen without the message.

What has happened to my Powerbook????! I don't have applecare but I imagine I will be calling Apple this morning unless someone can help here

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I've got my mothers aluminium 12" Powerbook here because there were some troubles with it, it was freezing, made strange clicking noises on the left side (like 20 times every time she tried to restart) and eventually wouldn't start up anymore. So I guess there must be something wrong with the harddrive .
What is the best strategy to try to save as much data as possible? I have the original OS X 10.3.4 installation disks, I have an external hard drive to write the users data folder to. Do I just slide in the install disk while starting up (I mean I can't slide in the disk while it's off can I?) and will I be able to attach the external drive in order to copy the files?
I received an old powerbook from a friend today and i plugged it all in and everything and the power adapter in the back and the ring lit up orange but when i went to turn it on nothing happened at all i didnt hear anything inside, it just didnt turn on. i really want to find the problem and/or fix it up.... I dont want to part with it as i need an extra laptop...
View 10 Replies View RelatedI went to turn on my Powerbook G4 (Aluminum 1.67GHz Low Res) today and when I plugged it in, I noticied a kind of crackling or popping noise. I unplugged the power adapter and tried again. I knew that my battery was dying before this (could only get about 30 min on a charge). But now I cannot start my Powerbook. Whenever I plug in my power adaptor, there is no green/orange light. However, when I take the battery out, I hear the Powerbook trying to start up (hard drive spin). But then there is nothing but my fans on full blast! They will not stop and there is nothing on the screen. I left it there for a good 5 min and nothing changed!
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, recently (as of thursday or so) my PBG4 has been making weird buzzing noises, usually only when it was working hard (or watching things online). Eventually, as it got closer to the weekend, the noise started to get louder whenever it would come on, so I'd just turn off my computer for an hour or so and let it cool. Finally, today, I turn it off again and now whenever I turn it back on, all I get is the gray start up screen, sans spinner. Sometimes I even get a little folder with the mac face on it. What's wrong?

Yesterday my computer randomly went to sleep and wouldn't wake up. I forced it to shut down and then tried rebooting it. It started up, but went to sleep before even getting to the login screen. I have searched the internet, this website, and the apple support site to try and fix the problem.
I have tried resetting the PMU (although I don't know if I did that correctly), leaving it to rest without any battery or AC power hooked up to it, and the CMD + ALT + P + R reset all to no avail.
It seems like the general outcome for random sleep problems hasn't been too good,
I am leaving for a week long trip and many parts of it will not be able to run the computer off of the powercord, which is a problem because I get about 40mins of wordprocessing use out of it when I run the battery alone. Can someone explain what the significance of these levels are for my Powerbook G4 15'' (Alm) 1.25GHz, namely the cycle count and full charge/remaining capacity?

I just realized that the Unobody MacBook (later 08) does not close properly. It's kind of hard to move the lid (compared to my UMBP) and the magnet is not strong enough to keep it closed.

I recently received an Intel SSD 80GB 2.5" for my MacBook (Alu MacBook 13"; the MacBook specific area is pretty dry as far as SSDs go). While it is quite fast and I am content with the speed, one anomaly has arisen. I was walking upstairs with my MacBook closed in hand and embraced to my chest when I heard a rattling noise coming from the sleeping machine. I opened it up to see that the SSD has about 1/2 to 1 inch of movement horizontally and about 1/2 inch vertically. When I put in the new drive I made sure to screw in the bracket nearest to the logicboard (but I later realized that the SSD does not have the nubs the old HDD did and therefore it does little in the way of securing the SSD). I looked at this video on information about how to install the SSD, but as far as I know, I have done everything that he has.
Am I correct in assuming that this is normal? This is my first installation of a new hard drive of any means into a laptop.
Lion won't start up properly,it goes to grey screen asking for my name and password..starts up but only a few things will work! and when I reduce say email or safari it staggers and I have no sound! Well just installed XP on my boot camp partition. Here is my issue:1. The trackpad doesn't seem to be working properly. It's showing under device manager fine but the 2 finger right-click option isn't working. 2. Is the keyboard supposed to be backlit in XP?3. View 5 Replies View RelatedI own both an iMac and a MacBook.Lately I've been trying to use [URL] and while the website does work, it displays totally wrong on my iMac ?I looked at all I could think of (not a newbie, but not savvy enough to go look in the coding to look for errors there).The one section from the site which displays correctly is one without a menu on both right and left. It's a blog. Here's a clue, I guess. I tried with both Safari 5.1.6 and Firefox 13.0, with the exact same result. But on my Macbook it displays perfect! I am using Firefox 12.0 on it. So I downgraded to Firefox 12.0 on the iMac... no success.Of course I also cleared the cache, closed the browser, and the computer... no luck.I then removed all plugins, since it was the only remaining difference...I thought it could be a difference in display... altough I couldn't see how... I changed it from 1920x1080 to the ones similar to my Macbook's (1280x1024 and 1280x720)... Of course it was the same, just more blurry. It doesn't make sense and I hate it when it doesn't make sense!Of course I hate it even more that I can't use that website on my iMac!!! (or with a lot of hassle).Â

I've been using a Moshi ClearGuard KB protector for a while but haven't been happy with the fact that it gets cloudy over time and requires frequent cleaning to restore. I bought the Marware keyboard protector shown here because it looks nice and shouldn't have the same issue with clouding. My only issue with it is that it doesn't fit properly over the enter and shift keys, so the wording on the protector itself is not lined up with the wording on the key below. Does anyone else own this protector? Does yours have the same issue? I'm trying to figure out whether mine is defective or if it's a design flaw.
