I was just using my powerbook G4 12" when it "clicked", the screen went black and it will not respond. the power cable light is on, and I've tried another battery, but it does not turn on! the little light on the latch button that glows usually, is not on. What has happened to my Powerbook????! I don't have applecare but I imagine I will be calling Apple this morning unless someone can help here

A couple of days ago started to occasionally make a clank clank noise and getting stacked on the spinning colour circle, only manual restart would do it.
Thought it might be the hard disk as it is a bit old and i never replaced anything on it, shacked it and a noise of something loose would happen, so i thought of opening it up and see if i could reattach anything loose....anyway i started unscrewing following instructions, couldn't get memory out...every screw seems different and so i gave up, put it all back together, praying that the screws are all in their right places and hey, now it wont even start, not a loose sound when shaken though, but not a bip not a light, black screen, nothing...only sign of life is the green light under the num block key and the capitals arrow also starts light
I've got an older 15" powerbook running Mac OS X 10.3.9 (i think). Lately my computer screen randomly turns itself off, the whole think going black, like it was asleep or off, but the computer keeps running just fine. Like i might have itunes playing or be burning a disc and that goes on just fine. The computer itself stays running. What I've been doing is putting the computer to sleep by closing the notebook, letting it rest for a few seconds and turning it back on by opening it back out. This fixes the problem for anywhere from 5 seconds to indefinitely, until it happens again. Lately its been happening more. The computer is 4 years old, but the model itself, probably 5.

Powers on, checks combo drive, gongs, no flickering or lighting on screen, period.
Tried a PRAM reset several times but it NEVER gongs a second time. I tried booting to Open Firmware and typing mac-boot, blind, but nothing. The keyboard clearly works, as the caps lock light works.
The hard drive spins up, the fans run at normal speeds, so everything else is clearly functional.
I bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'
The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.
recently my powerbook g4 has been doing some funny things. ..--Sometimes it won't turn on when pressing the button but eventually it will. --The computer would not book up earlier and would just stay on a white screen, like the white screen you normally get when booting but without the apple logo.--When my computer eventually booted it worked for a couple of mins and then the screen went a tinted black colour and a box came up in the middle of the screen saying i need to reboot (the box had a power logo for the background)--Then i rebooted and as i was rebooting a black screen came up with lots of writing in white. A bit like on a windows pc.

I turned it on one morning, and a black screen appears with the following message:

I have the Software Install Restore Discs 1 & 2.
When I insert Disc 1, I hold down the C key, and the info pops up beautifully. I get really happy at this point. The steps it shows me are as follows:

Select Destination
Installation
I am able to get up to the "Select Destination" portion, where it asks me to "Select a destination volume to install the Mac OS X software"
However, there is nothing listed, so I cannot move on to the next step.
So I've got my mothers aluminium 12" Powerbook here because there were some troubles with it, it was freezing, made strange clicking noises on the left side (like 20 times every time she tried to restart) and eventually wouldn't start up anymore. So I guess there must be something wrong with the harddrive .
What is the best strategy to try to save as much data as possible? I have the original OS X 10.3.4 installation disks, I have an external hard drive to write the users data folder to. Do I just slide in the install disk while starting up (I mean I can't slide in the disk while it's off can I?) and will I be able to attach the external drive in order to copy the files?
I received an old powerbook from a friend today and i plugged it all in and everything and the power adapter in the back and the ring lit up orange but when i went to turn it on nothing happened at all i didnt hear anything inside, it just didnt turn on. i really want to find the problem and/or fix it up.... I dont want to part with it as i need an extra laptop...
View 10 Replies View RelatedI put my PowerBook to sleep and left home with it about an hour ago. I just opened it and it woke up but the screen was black. I turned it off and back on. The white screen with the apple and progress wheel came on for a normal period of time, but then the screen went all white and there were several uneven horizontal lines across the middle and froze there. I forced a restart and the same thing happened but this time I got the semi transparent window that says need to restart. I did that and I got the same screen without the message.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOn my Mac Pro i have windows XP on hard drive number 2. I went to boot to it today after installing a program and nothing happens. The monitors are receiving information but there just a black screen.
Not sure what i should do considering that i can still access the drive and files from the MAC Side. I can also get to the boot screen to select safe mode but that also does nothing.
It is a early 09 Mac Pro...i have been using the computer this way since last April. Cant figure out what happened.
So, recently (as of thursday or so) my PBG4 has been making weird buzzing noises, usually only when it was working hard (or watching things online). Eventually, as it got closer to the weekend, the noise started to get louder whenever it would come on, so I'd just turn off my computer for an hour or so and let it cool. Finally, today, I turn it off again and now whenever I turn it back on, all I get is the gray start up screen, sans spinner. Sometimes I even get a little folder with the mac face on it. What's wrong?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am currently experiencing problems booting up my imac 17-inch, 1.6GHz (2004 model I think). When I hit the power button the machine starts but the screen rmains black and after about 3 mins of this, the fan goes into overdrive! The only way I can turn the computer on at the moment is to remove the casing and use the on switch located inside the the machine, although this is no guarantee it will work, sometimes it does but the majority of times it will be the same black screen as before. All I am waiting to hear is the part in the top corner (hard drive~?) to click into gear and then it's fine, and the machine seems to work perfectly. But this is not a solution and I fear it is only a matter of time before the machine just explodes altogether
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just bought a powerbook, and I'm trying to get it to turn on. It doesn't have a hard drive, so obviously it won't be able to get it to boot. I just want to be able to get to the flashing folder. When I press the power button, the computer does nothing, not even the fan spins. The only indication I have that it is on is the caps lock light turns on. I've tried resetting the pram, but the screen stays blank and does nothing. I don't have any ram modules in it, so it shouldn't be a ram problem.

When I put my ear to the case I can hear a faint noise.

So I've got a powerbook G4, thats 8 days past its warranty. Conveniently, it now won't turn on. It won't wont boot from CD. If I turn it on, I get a gray screen that usually just turns my computer back off, if thats not the case I get a screen that shows the finder icon and a question mark and then turns off.
All it will do is boot into open firmware mode. Currently the install disc is inside of it and I've tried booting the cd using "cd:, bxi" and "dir hd", and it can't open both. Does anyone know how to wipe the HD, and start the installer using firmware? Otherwise, I think I'll have to take out the harddrive and plug it into an external case and then wipe it.
I load the OS, get to my desktop and i don't see any clock, wireless or battery. it soon went to blue screen, then back. now it is changing between 2 shades of blue.

View 20 Replies View RelatedI've got a friend with a 17" PowerBook G4 that's suddenly started displaying a vertical strip of black lines about 2" wide. Any idea what's causing the problem? I've seen plenty of pictures of PowerBooks with pixel-wide strips of a single color, but none that show black lines. Something else to note is that the problem area is displaying a shadow of the previous window that was there (ghosting).
He's tried all the usual, from rebooting to rubbing the problem area to pressing the metal strip above the keyboard to try and reseat the ribbon cable.
My MAC powerbook was working fine yesterday! I shut it down last night and when I tried to boot it up this morning I get: the booting "sound" and the grey screen after which the screen turns to black and in the top left-hand corner
View 3 Replies View RelatedI gave my Powerbook 15" G4 screen a wipe and after rebooting it has gone very dark. There is still an image there but I need a torch to see it. I've tried the brightness controls and rebooting several times but it is still the same. Is there anything else I can try before taking it to a Mac repairer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHere's the rundown: my uncle gave me a pristine Powerbook G4 Titanium edition. Good computer, 15.5" screen, definitely worth keeping. He wiped the thing clean before giving it to me. The problem is the internal CD drive is super flaky and won't take an bootable CD well. It took my Tiger bootable once or twice and bonked out during the installation. Now, I can't get anything. BUT, I have a nice external firewire 400 CD/DVD drive. I hit option and can see the disc, but the PB won't take it. Also, of course I hit C on startup to try and load from the CD. Hasn't taken since the first few tries.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA friend was just given a PowerBook G4 in perfect condition (seemingly). It has just been sitting on a shelf for several years and worked fine before it was shelved.
Now when she plugs it in, the orange light on the cord lights up orange, but when she tries to boot the machine, nothing happens. I mean nothing.
Is there something simple that this could be? Wondering if there is a little battery inside that is needed that could have gone dead over the years of idle sitting, or something like that. I just don't know PowerBooks very well.

But not long after this when i tried booting it up the normal happens at first ie the t'ing' start up sound and the apple sign with the little timer going round but it does nothing else, it just carries on going round. I have tried re setting it and looked on help sites like this to try and override it etc but nothing seems to work!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI went to turn on my Powerbook G4 (Aluminum 1.67GHz Low Res) today and when I plugged it in, I noticied a kind of crackling or popping noise. I unplugged the power adapter and tried again. I knew that my battery was dying before this (could only get about 30 min on a charge). But now I cannot start my Powerbook. Whenever I plug in my power adaptor, there is no green/orange light. However, when I take the battery out, I hear the Powerbook trying to start up (hard drive spin). But then there is nothing but my fans on full blast! They will not stop and there is nothing on the screen. I left it there for a good 5 min and nothing changed!
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my computer up in the morning everything else starts normally. First the light comes on on the front of the computer and on the bottom of the monitor, then the start up tone rings and the computer is fully running. But my monitor is black and I do not get the apple picture or nothing on the screen. I thought my monitor was going out, but we have another work station the same and I switched the monitors (same 27" cinema screen as mine). I can actually use the other computer and network into my computer and fully use everything on my computer. But my monitor is black (no display)! I have contacted MAC and have reset the PMU button many times and sometimes this works, but most of the time it does not. I just keep restarting the computer and finally it will start up normally with the display and everything.

We just get a new mac air. We were trying netflix video, and the browser did not response. Now It get a black screen and can't start.
I tried to press power button, etc, but nothing works.
We are rather new to Mac world. What are the things I could try?
BTW, the Mac air comes with a power supply only. There is no DVD drive or thing like that. How do I re-install OS if I need to?
After searching the mac forums for a while, it seems like no one else has experienced this problem. All similar problems with black screens occurred during Windows installation, not once it had been installed.
Here's my problem:
I installed boot camp just fine, no problems. Hold option key on startup, and I get 2 options: Macintosh HD and Windows. When I selected Windows for the first few days, it would load up, no problem, and I would be able to run Windows XP.
However, all of a sudden (i.e. didn't download or install anything on either partition that would mess things up) when I select the Windows partition at start up, it goes to a black screen (I don't even see the windows startup logo), and stays like that until I hit the power button on my mac pro tower.
I'm not sure if it matters, but during this black screen process, my keyboard is non responsive.
