OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Power PC Apps Crash On Startup In OS 10.5.8 Leopard

Apr 1, 2012

I've been reading a great deal in this forum regarding the issue in the subject line of this post.  But it all has to do with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  My 10.5.8 on my system has not been updated in any way for a while.  So how is it that in the last couple of weeks all of my Power PC apps still on board, are going through this crash on start up routine. If I select 'relaunch' from the dialogue window that pops up upon the intial crash, the app will run fairly normally.  This can't be about a security update like with Snow Leopard.

OS X :: Apps Freezing - Can't Force Quit

Jul 28, 2008

I have a Mac Pro with 10.5.4 (Intel 2.66 Dual-Core -- 5GB ram) installed. Things have been running smoothly for a long time, but recently I've had a few kernel panics, which seem to have gone away, but now it's very common for applications to freeze, and I can't unfreeze them by force-quitting--I have to power the G5 down by holding the power button.

OS X :: System Apps Keep Freezing And Other Weird Stuff?

Jan 25, 2009

I've been experiencing some weird problems on my Mac Pro for the last few days. It's a Xeon quad 2.8, 6GB memory and running 10.5.6, never had any problems with it before. So the problems I'm having is that some system applications becomes unresponsive (freeze and fun beach ball spinning). In most cases I'm not able to force quit the frozen apps either. Also, in the dock it says "Application Not Responding" when I right click on them (like it should), but when I check the "Force Quit Applications" window there is no such text (there should be some red text after the application name if I'm not mistaken).

These are the apps that has frozen the last few days: System preferences, Disk Utility, System Profiler, Software Update, the main menu has also frozen at times.

When I try to shut down the Mac Pro it quits all the applications as usual, but then just stops and shows the wallpaper and nothing else (so I have to use the power button on Mac Pro itself to completely shut it down. When I want to put my Mac to sleep it takes way longer than usual as well. Today after I had been away for a while I came back to see the screen saver active, but in my Energy settings I've set it to shut down the displays before the screen saver would activate so I have no idea why the screen saver was on...

I have locked my System Preferences (with the little lock in the lower left) but when I click on the lock it just says "Authorizing..." next to it and System Preferences freezes (no password window pops up).

I'm lost. I can't for the life of me figure out what could be wrong. I've used Repaired Permissions without any luck. (There was some error messages, but now I can't even open up Disk Utility again without it freezing directly at start up.)

All I can think about is that something I've installed would have messed something up, not sure. The last days I've installed: Grammarian Pro X (trial), iWork '09 (retail) and Handbreak. (and I've updated other software like Adium, but I doubt that's the problem)

ITunes :: Keeps Freezing On Startup?

Apr 24, 2012

A few days ago, my itunes began freezing shortly after startup. It would take forever to get through the "checking library" phase and then once it fully opened it would freeze. This may coincide with it beginning to download some itunes-u content in qeue, but i can't keep it running long enough to get into the store to cancel the downloads, if that's what it is. updating the software but everytime i try it says "software is up to date", even though it was just told me that one is available. I've tried removing and reinstalling and have got nowhere. I may have actually made it angrier. I have over 109 days of music that I can't listen to and and an iphone I can't add/remove files from.

But lately, my Mac is crashing repeatedly when I attempt to use iTunes or iBooks, both also the latest releases.  Syncing with either iTunes or iBooks is nearly impossible.  No disk repair or verification errors.  I am thinking that there is some rogue software glitch that has me.  I am thinking that I need to do a factory reset followed by a time machine data recovery.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard And Trackpad Freezing Upon Startup

Jul 2, 2010

Ever since I installed mouse drivers for my logitech MX510 from driverscollections.com, I've been experiencing problems with my mbp. First of all, it takes about 3 minutes to boot up (white/grey apple screen), secondly, upon finishing bootup, the keyboard and trackpad have become virtually useless for awhile (about twenty minutes or longer). Only USB keyboards and mice work during this useless phase. I noticed this only happens when I boot up my laptop. It's the latest MBP 2.4 ghz, 4gb ram and I've had this for about two months.

MacBook Pro :: Keeps Freezing Up - Shows Black Screen On Startup

Mar 12, 2012

Recently my Mac has been extremely unstable. It keeps freezing up and hanging for no reason. Initially a 3 beep would sound off, I ran some tests like the apple hardware one and realised that one of the rams was bad. I bought 2 new sticks of ram and replaced it. Following which, the mac still freezes up and a 3 beep alarm sounded off again.

Currently, I'm trying to turn it on, no 3 beep signal is sounding off but the Mac either keeps freezing and showing a highly pixelated screen or a black screen surfaces. There is some sound coming off from the laptop as well. Each time I switch on the system, it just shows a black screen with no display.

The Mac is a 15'' 2.66 MHz i7 which was manufactured in the mid 2010s.
The 2 new sticks of ram are Strontium 1066Mhz 4Gb x 2 sticks.
In the initial stages: kernel panics were common as well.

PowerPC :: Powerbook Freezing During Startup / Unable To Eject Inserted Cd

Nov 6, 2010

Hi, just wondering if anyone could give me some diagnostic tips with a very unhappy powerbook. Ive tried the Apple support pages, but they didnt do the job so I thought Id look for some helpful experts I will be immensely grateful if you could help me figure out whats wrong.

Its a G4 Power book, running OS 10.4. It suddenly froze on me one day, so I held down the power button to reboot and it hasnt worked since. One thing that I guess could be relevant is that it was pretty much out of disc space it had flashed up the warning a few times in recent days and I was in progress of doing a clean up when it went.

What Ive tried so far:

Normal power up:

Result: Chime, apple logo and spinning logo appear. Stays that way for 4 mins, until screen goes darker grey and You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button. message appears.

Safe boot (with progress status) power up holding shift-command-v:

Result: Chime, apple logo appears, nothing else. Stays like this for ~30 mins until I give up and power down.Reseting PRAM and NVRAM power up holding command-option-p-r

Result: Chime, then restarts and second chime, then does exactly the same as the normal power up.

Next step recommended by the Apple Support site is to start directly from the OSX installation disc but my powerbook already has a CD inserted which I am unable to eject.

Any tips how can I eject? Could the safe reboot take more than 30 mins (bearing in mind it didnt give me any progress indication)? Anything else I should try?

Power Mac G5 :: Intermittent System Freezing Around Same Time

Nov 24, 2007

I run a dual 2 GHz G5 PPC (OS 10.4.10) - for the past 4-5 months I've been getting freeze ups for no apparent reason. These nearly always happen around the same time in the evening (around 11 pm) - although not every evening - probably 2/3 times a week. They can happen whether there is any activity on the computer or not. There is never anything on the console log at the time of the freeze up. I'm putting off an archive and install - though I've tried everything else - Disk First aid, Disk Warrior, permissions, fsck, cache cleaning, font checking, Memcheck, re-booting in safe mode, re-applying combo update, resetting the PRAM etc. - I've even tried replacing my secondary hard drive. I've also tried watching the Activity monitor around the problem time - unfortunately this is when it decides not to happen.

The Mac appears to run ok during the day (usually on by 7.30am) One other slightly odd thing is that sometimes at boot up a warning screen will appear and vanish in a 'nanosecond' - I think it could be the device removal warning -though nothing apart from my two internal drives may be connected. I also get this in the start up log 'family specific matching fails' on a number of usb items. Hope someone can help I'm running out of ideas.

I am looking for a way to delay the startup of the items in my "Login Items" and Startup items/LaunchDaemons. I have Lingon which helps to easily manage startup but there isn't any option to delay the startup of the app.

Is there any settings in OSX or a 3rd party app that can achieve this?

OS X :: Apps That Start On Startup / Login Without My Permission

Aug 7, 2009

How do I stop intrusive apps from running at startup/login? I checked both libraries > StartupItems and System > StartupItems.

Long version + rambling:

So there is this intrusive app that I installed, and it keeps adding a folder in my Documents folder. Everytime I delete it, it comes back on startup.

I thought it would be much easier to find the file responsible for starting this app on startup, but I was disappointed. But I'm betting it's not as difficult as searching the Windows registry.

Anyway, it's not among the 'login' items, and I searched the main Library, and my User Library, and even the System's 'startup' folders, and found nothing. So what's the deal?

Before you make any accusations, the app I'm using is Parallels, and yeah, there's probably some preference I could change to stop it from doing that, but I would like to do this manually, and learn more about how OS X works. I want to stop the app from running without my permission when I log in. (I'm stubborn, and want to show this app who's boss around here!)

I'm thankful that in OS X, apps are much less intrusive than Windows ones, and they're only intrusive when I give them my password, from my experience at least. Am I right? But goodness I hate how intrusiveness followed me here from Windows. It would have been a deal breaker, had I known how many files (hidden or otherwise) it was going to scatter across my tidy Mac.

MacBook Pro :: SSD Speedy For Startup And Launching Apps

Apr 22, 2010

I am buying a new MBP as soon as I can make up my mind which one. I will be using Photoshop and Lightroom for my photo editing. I know a SSD is speedy for start up and launching apps. Does it also increase the speed at which the apps like Photoshop actually run once they are launched? I'm thinking about buying the base 2.4GHz and adding 4BGB and a 160GB SSD drive. I like the small 13" form factor. It will easily fit into my camera back pack. I'm thinking a SSD would be faster for quick field editing photo's helping to make up for the slower CPU. This would be for the field. I'm waiting for the new MP to come out. That machine would be for my "heavy lifting" work flow at home.

OS X Mavericks :: Slow Startup And Apps Switching

Jun 20, 2014

I'm verifying such an annoying problem, mostly at startup that appears to solve automatically after OS Mavericks is running.

Sometimes my iMac boot until the login windows in 45 seconds which is very good, but most of times I have to wait 30-40 minutes for the login windows to appears

and everything is running so slowly then.

Using the following command in Terminal:

syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -efsyslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef

This is the result:
