Power Mac G5 :: Will Not Boot - Fans Run High Only?
Nov 3, 2007My back up 1.6 ghz G5 power mac is misbehaving. I moved the system to another room and when I went to boot up, the only response I got was the fans running at normal speed - and then they started to slowly creep up to a very high speed. No hard drive activity, no monitor activity. I swapped out the memory for the original factory mem - same problem - reset the switch... nothing.

MacBook :: System Will Not Power On But Fans Spin
Aug 17, 2009I got a new macbook black that is not covered under warranty, the magsafe fried on it and it used to boot up but not charge the battery or show any signs of power from the magsafe so then I bought a new magsafe that connects to the logic board and replaced it and when I plugged the power adapter in it tried to turn on right away and then the fan spinned and the sleep light light up then it shut off right away and I didn't smell nothing from the macbook or logic board. The battery now charges and the light on the magsafe adapter lights up so I tried to turn it back on and it doesn't the same thing turns on and then right off just the fan spins and then the hdds spin lasts for like a sec or two. I tried to turn it on with the battery out and with just the battery in nothing swapped the RAM same thing went from two 1 gig sticks to 2 256mb sticks and then tried another two 2gig sticks same thing then I tried a different hdd and have the same thing happen? What I need to do to get this working and yes I tried a google search and every1 ended up taking it to apple and I cannot do that.

Jun 25, 2010My PCI bay fan is running at full speed no matter what. The temperature sensor reads correctly in OS X, so I don't think it's a bad sensor.
Is there any way to set the fan speed manually, say in openfirmware?
It's a 1.8 DP June '04; I've ran ASD 2.5.8 to calibrate and test the mobo, which passed.

Power Mac G5 :: Overheating In Idle Mode - Fans Blow Harder
Nov 6, 2007I have a G5 dual 2gig and in idle mode it seems to a be slightly overheating as my fans start to blow harder and I get my mouse sticking I am running the latest version of Tiger with 3.5gigs of ram I did post in the IDvD, Logic Pro, and the Final cut pro forums the impact of an upgrade of 8gig of ram on my system whether my apps would run better and the system as a whole.
But I have not been able to get any feed back on this that was clear and I was asked to try here on this forum so here I am. I deeply love my G5 and what it can do I am just wondering if it is working at its most optimum I do regularly do my house keeping i.e. repairing permission and occasionally using Tech tool Pro to look over the system but nothing out of the ordinary jumps out. I have a screen shot of my activity monitor and cpu monitor but I do not know how to attach it.

Power Mac G5 :: Loud Wild Fans - Hang Ups And Hard Reset
Dec 7, 2007I have a DP 2.7 G5 Tower and lately I come into my office to find it with dark screens (dual monitor setup), and I am unable to in any way control it by the mouse or keyboard. I imagine it's "hung?" The fans are on full blast and it sounds like it's planning to take off at any moment. I've awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of it and it's in that same state. What to do? I restart it at the power button. I then have to run Disk Utility to verify all the disks and RAID setups.
Anyway, I read about the coolant leaks issues. I started running a temperature monitoring program for the past few months, and its been doing about the same type of pattern since I started monitoring it. Doesn't appear to be unusual. Everything appears to be working fairly well, except for this issue. System is OS X.4.11, and checks out fine with Disk Utility. So far the hard reboots haven't done any damage to my disks, but it worries me greatly. Also the "liquid cooled" aspect worries me greatly.

Mar 24, 2012I was out of town so this description was second hand but the computer has been running a little weird for a while. When I have too many apps open or on a website that has a lot going on...the computer starts revving up until I quit out of everything and let it slow down. I guess while I was gone, this happened but nobody quit out the apps and it eventually turned the screen black. When I tried restarting it sounds like the computer is working but the screen is black so I can't see if it is booting up or not. I took the monitor into the apple store yesterday and it started up right away for them. It's a cinema 23" I think.

Power Mac :: Mac Pro No Boot Sound, Black Screen And Loud Fans
May 25, 2012I've had problems with my Mac for a while now. First of all, it indicated ram problems with 2 beeps. I later fixed this by moving and changing around modules. It was solved, but now a new problem. The Mac seems to turn on, making its iconic sound for startup, but the screen remains black. After about a half to one minute, the fans go crazy and I have to shut it off. I've tried a few things like holding shift or alt, but that doesn't work as it doesn't even display a white screen.
I need to know what to do and I don't really have the time to buy new parts right now. I'm really a windows based pc fixer by the way so I'm new to fixing macs.

Hardware :: Power Mac G5 Will Not Wake From Sleep / Fans Blowing Full Blast
Oct 9, 2005I just bought a new dual 2.0 ghz power mac G5 about 2 weeks ago. I set everything up and dowloaded all the updates for everything, and then about a week into using it the problem started. I left for work and when I got home that evening after the computer had been asleep all day, it sounded like the computer was taking off from a runway. It would not respond at all to the keyboard or mouse so I had to shut it down by holding the power button on the front of the unit and then start it back up. I called tech support but they had me turn the option off that puts the harddrive to sleep when possible and then turn off my screensaver. Well it was fine again for about a week and then it happened agin yesterday, not once but twice. I looked on apple discussion boards and there is alot of this happening. Well I took one guy's advice that seemed to know what he was talking about. I restarted holding the command-option-o-f keys down, then prompted the computer to reset the v-ram, and two other things he suggested to reset that I cannot remember. Then I restarted, trashed the energy saver prefs and ran a repair disk permissions task inside OSX. Well that is where I am now, and it has not done it again, but I am still trying to find out what exactly is going on here. I just spent $2000 on a machine and it appears messed up and Mac has no answer.

Mac Mini :: Video Performance Highly Disappointing
Apr 21, 2009After reading some of the threads here with people being very happy with their minis, I decided to head down to the Apple store and give it a go. I used each of the computers (a Mac mini, Mac Pro, and iMac) for about 10 minutes (which seems like forever when you are in a crowded retail store) doing things I would normally be doing at home. The iMac was fine, as expected. It handled just about everything with satisfactory speed, even thought it was the base 24" model with no fancy processors or graphics.

The Mac Mini though was quite disappointing. To render a 1 minute video in iMovie it took around 4 minutes. The Mac Pro did the job on the same exact movie (sample file found on every display computer) in about 45 seconds. Another big difference was apparent, while the movies were rendering, the Mac Pro was completely responsive and I was able to load iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Safari, and iTunes. Each opened up within seconds, and each interface was running smoothly as if nothing was happening in the background (granted for a short period as the movie finished rendering quickly).............
Power Mac G5 :: 1st Kernel Panic, Then Repeated Freezing?
Oct 12, 2007I have a G5 tower and randomy since last night my computer did that whole kernel panic thing then i restarted... sometimes it didnt boot up the computer just sat there. Other times it loaded and the computer would work for sometimes 5 to 30 mins before freezing again. What do you think it is?

Nov 24, 2007I run a dual 2 GHz G5 PPC (OS 10.4.10) - for the past 4-5 months I've been getting freeze ups for no apparent reason. These nearly always happen around the same time in the evening (around 11 pm) - although not every evening - probably 2/3 times a week. They can happen whether there is any activity on the computer or not. There is never anything on the console log at the time of the freeze up. I'm putting off an archive and install - though I've tried everything else - Disk First aid, Disk Warrior, permissions, fsck, cache cleaning, font checking, Memcheck, re-booting in safe mode, re-applying combo update, resetting the PRAM etc. - I've even tried replacing my secondary hard drive. I've also tried watching the Activity monitor around the problem time - unfortunately this is when it decides not to happen.
The Mac appears to run ok during the day (usually on by 7.30am) One other slightly odd thing is that sometimes at boot up a warning screen will appear and vanish in a 'nanosecond' - I think it could be the device removal warning -though nothing apart from my two internal drives may be connected. I also get this in the start up log 'family specific matching fails' on a number of usb items. Hope someone can help I'm running out of ideas.

Dec 29, 2007I have a problem with my G5 freezing and it is preceded with by loud fan noise. I was wondering if the hard drive could be the problem? It had the problem with 10.4 as well as 10.5. It happens at startup most of the time and eventually lets me get up and running and stops being a problem.

Aug 19, 2008I recently purchased a new 2.8 GHz iMac. I know that AVCHD is highly processor intensive but surely I should be able to play back Full HD video on a brand new computer! Using Toast Titanium 9 to play the files I'm getting ~20 fps on a 30 fps stream! Editing is not an issue because Final Cut/Apple Intermediate Codec take care of playback but I want to be able to archive the unedited AVCHD and that means I need to be able to view the raw files later. My CPU averages ~25% idle while playing back the video. Does that mean the video card is the bottleneck?

MacBook Pro :: Fans Suddenly Making Wierd Noises / Fans Are Hitting Something?
Jul 27, 2009the other day i wake up and open my macbook pro and immediately heard the fan making noises ive never heard it make before. i checked istat pro. the fans were going at 2000rpm. this is when i started to get concerned since i would never hear the fans at that speed before. the difference was day and night. it sounds like the one or both of the fans are hitting something. i always hear the noise when i start up or wake up from sleep and after a while (30 minutes to an hour) it usually goes away but has come back once without me turning off or putting the computer to sleep. its a refurbished less than a little more than a month ago. im hoping its just some dirt that made it through keyboard and will eventually go away because i dont want to send my machine in to get manhandled by apple repair. has anyone had something like this happen before?

They do it on the leviathan 17", and now on the top spec 15" (or lower spec if you BTO) albeit at a cost of 120 notes. But no 13". Can anyone provide even a semi-rational (i.e. practical) explanation as to why not, or is just the worst side of Apple we're seeing here?

MacBook Pro :: Fans Always At 4k?
Mar 17, 2010So lately I've noticed my Macbook Pro to be quite noisy. According to iStat menus, the fans seems to always be running at 4,000 RPM, even if I am just staring at my desktop, with nothing open.
They speed up normally when the CPU is under load, but they never go lower than 4k.
I tried using SMCFancontrol to restore the default settings, but they still run fast. I even reset the SMC the other day hoping that would fix it, but it didn't.
I've checked activity monitor and used a few terminal commands to check for any processes that are causing high cpu load or anything weird, but I haven't found anything.

Feb 15, 2008My OWC RAM is working just fine, but I am growing increasingly concerned about the temperatures at which it runs. I have the 3.0 (120W) MacBook 2008 with 18 Gb RAM (4x4Gb + 2x1Gb apple stock). The RAM in memory module A2 & B2 is getting up to 80 Celsius without even much of a workout on the RAM. What's more, the MacPro fans are not increasing - right now the hottest module is at 76 Celsius and fans haven't increased at all (see screenshot below).
I have installed SMC fan control, which I understand is supposed to set the minimum fan speed, which I have set at 730 because my RAM was running hot even without any workout. How concerned should I be about this? Is this a) a defect in my mac pro b) a design flaw c) a problem with OWC memory, or d) is everything OK and I'm making a mountain out of a molehill?

So my question is, where would I actually spray the compressed air without opening the chassis? I'm scared to use it on the keyboard because I've heard keys popping off that way, and wondering if I spray into the vent below the screen, I would just blow the dust deeper into the computer...

Aug 22, 2009My Unibody 17" MacBook Pro (10.5.8) Is having a few issues that I cant figure out how to deal with.
I got this laptop I think in April. And a few weeks ago I noticed the a loud humming noise that wasnt there before. It seems, after finially looking into this problem, that my fans are running at full speed from the second I hit the power button, right until the machine shuts off. I installed istat and it says the fans are running at about 5700 rpm. I guess the good news is that It doesnt ever get warm. Although this fan noise is kinda annoying and Im worried it will burn out the fans before their time.
Also some time later I realized that the backlight on the keyboard didn't work and I couldn't get it to turn on manually. As well as the auto brightness adjust for the screen stopped working.
I have installed labtick and the keys do light up with that program (although I liked it when apple did it auto for me)
I read some threads here and really thought I had it with the reset the SMC. But to no avail. I also tried resetting the PRAM, which also didn't help.
I'm not sure If any of these problems are related or If this is just the most bunk MacBook Ive ever bought.
MacBook Pro :: Fans Won't Go Under 3500 Rpm Even With SMC
Oct 6, 2009I have the new unibody 17 MBP 3.06. The unit doesn't get hot and I love it, but my fans run at a constant 3300-3500 rpm (istat and SMC fan control). The lowest setting on SMC is 1000 rpm I wanted it to run around 2000, but when I set it up the fans rev down then 1 second after revving down to the slower speed run right back to 3500 area. Is this normal? I thought SMC was to override the apple settings. Just 2700 rpm's makes a sound difference on my MBP. I was in a rush and forgot to mention that I just added SMC. I have had the computer for a month now and istat pro had it at 3500 rpm since I have gotten it and that is just surfing the net and at an idle. Since installing SMC Fan control didn't fix it I am wondering if I should take it in to an apple store or not?
