PowerPC :: Powerbook Freezing During Startup / Unable To Eject Inserted Cd
Nov 6, 2010
Hi, just wondering if anyone could give me some diagnostic tips with a very unhappy powerbook. Ive tried the Apple support pages, but they didnt do the job so I thought Id look for some helpful experts I will be immensely grateful if you could help me figure out whats wrong.
Its a G4 Power book, running OS 10.4. It suddenly froze on me one day, so I held down the power button to reboot and it hasnt worked since. One thing that I guess could be relevant is that it was pretty much out of disc space it had flashed up the warning a few times in recent days and I was in progress of doing a clean up when it went.
What Ive tried so far:
Normal power up:
Result: Chime, apple logo and spinning logo appear. Stays that way for 4 mins, until screen goes darker grey and You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button. message appears.
Safe boot (with progress status) power up holding shift-command-v:
Result: Chime, apple logo appears, nothing else. Stays like this for ~30 mins until I give up and power down.Reseting PRAM and NVRAM power up holding command-option-p-r
Result: Chime, then restarts and second chime, then does exactly the same as the normal power up.
Next step recommended by the Apple Support site is to start directly from the OSX installation disc but my powerbook already has a CD inserted which I am unable to eject.
Any tips how can I eject? Could the safe reboot take more than 30 mins (bearing in mind it didnt give me any progress indication)? Anything else I should try?

I bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'
The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.

So I've got my mothers aluminium 12" Powerbook here because there were some troubles with it, it was freezing, made strange clicking noises on the left side (like 20 times every time she tried to restart) and eventually wouldn't start up anymore. So I guess there must be something wrong with the harddrive .
What is the best strategy to try to save as much data as possible? I have the original OS X 10.3.4 installation disks, I have an external hard drive to write the users data folder to. Do I just slide in the install disk while starting up (I mean I can't slide in the disk while it's off can I?) and will I be able to attach the external drive in order to copy the files?

So a while back my HD died in my 12" 1.5ghz PowerBook G4. It's been like 2 months and I decided to run the apple hardware test again and to see if I could erase the drive at all before I sell it for parts.
So I put in the OS X CD and held down C. Nothing happens, the screen doesn't even go to the white apple screen or anything. I also tried the good old CD eject button but that didn't work either.
So I restart and hold down the mouse button- nothing happens.
I reset the PMU- the Open Firmware screen comes up and I try ejecting through open firmware but it said something like the device could not be ejected. It will also not let me boot from the CD. The CD drive sounds fine.
I am so confused
1) Why won't my disk eject
2) How can I get it out

I loaded a CD-Rom with some pictures from our kids photo session and it never showed up on the desktop. Now I try to use the eject button and nothing happens. Is there a way to "Force eject" or some equivalent? Odd thing is that when I open iDVD it says that my computer is not equipped with a superdrive. So it sounds as though my drive is not working.

I have a seriously annoying problem. I recently bought a Sony Ericsson w200i which arrived in the mail today. Cheerfully i connected it to my Powerbook using the included USB-cable which promtly brought up a 'you need to restart your computer'-screen in a few different languages. I can only remember having seen that screen once before in the 2 years i've had the Powerbook and then it was an exception but with the W200 it happens every damn time. Basically i'm just throwing this one out here because i can't find any info on this anywhere on the internet including these forums and Sony Ericssons support(i've mailed them but no response so far). I did find one thread where a poster says he simply connects it like i do but i don't know if he's got an intel or ppc.
My computer: Powerbook G4 1.67 ghz with OSX 10.4.2.

When i turn on my G4 i get past the grey apple screen, then when it gets to the startup screen(blue background with the white box with Mac OS X written and the progress meter bar below), the meter bar fills up slowly then when full, it just stays on that screen with the meter still full(with the usual flowing blue bar style).

It goes to a gray screen without an apple logo.I've tried putting it in Target disk mode (to get my files off). But it won't mount on my desktop. Also tried resseting the pram as apple's troubleshooting suggested. nothing differen

Just got a Pioneer 216-R DVD Burner. It worked great, extremely fast and fully functional. But when I pressed eject button it said I inserted a blank DVD(which I didn't) it asks what I want to open it with. What am I doing wrong? Or what's wrong with the DVD drive?!

to make a long story short, my first gen 17" G4 PB had its trackpad/power button cable severed a year ago, forcing me to remove the battery and memory door each time I need to start up. It's been kernel panicking a lot in the last few months, but always restarts fine. Tonight, on startup, it could not find the HD, and the logo shifted from happy mac to question mark and back. Is my HD toast? I know the comp is totally doomed and will be getting a new MBP when they come out (if they come out...), but I had wanted to keep the Powerbook in order to do a firewire transfer of files to the new MBP I get. Can this be fixed? Can the HD be mounted in an enclosure?

The sound on my 17" G4 Powerbook does not seem to be working any longer. I know there are some similar threads but I think my problem is slightly different because I get sound on startup (the startup chime) then when Leopard loads it seems to be dead.
When I press the volume keys (F4/F5) I see the volume indicator increase/decrease but I do not hear an alert sound.
When I go into System Preferences/Sound, "Internal Speakers" is grayed out under "Sound effects" but "Internal Speakers" shows up under the Output tab.
When I plug in headphones, I get no sound.
I've tried resetting the PRAM and open firmware.
I've tried creating a new user and the new user also has no sound.
I've tried repairing permissions, running disk warrior while booted from another drive, and a disk repair in disk utility, as well as fsck-fy and also clearing the cache files with applejack.
I am runnign Leopard on this machine, version 10.5.6.
I though it was a fried/disconnected sound card or a logic board issue until I realized that the startup chime was playing just fine.
Also, whenever I press the volume keys, I get the following error in system.log

I have a PowerBook G4 that I'm primarily using for audio editing and sound engineering. I would like to get multiple displays going on my laptop to make editing easier. I have heard that the TripleHead2Go won't work with a Powerbook, but I read a blog of someone actually getting it to work. Has anyone gotten this to work, or know anything about this. Here is a link to that blog.

Anyone have suggestions? I have a single 1.8ghz g5, 1gb ram, 10.4.10. I have a maxtor OneTouch III USB 2.0 200gb drive attached to it.
I can not seem to eject/unmount this drive. Every time i hook it up I just have to end up pulling the USB plug or turning the drive off suddenly to get it to "eject" but then i get the improper device removal error/warning message.
I have tried dragging to trash, I have tried apple E (which is what I usually do to any device) and I have tried going into disk utility and ejecting/unmounting from there as well. no dice.

I just bought a powerbook, and I'm trying to get it to turn on. It doesn't have a hard drive, so obviously it won't be able to get it to boot. I just want to be able to get to the flashing folder. When I press the power button, the computer does nothing, not even the fan spins. The only indication I have that it is on is the caps lock light turns on. I've tried resetting the pram, but the screen stays blank and does nothing. I don't have any ram modules in it, so it shouldn't be a ram problem.

So I've got a powerbook G4, thats 8 days past its warranty. Conveniently, it now won't turn on. It won't wont boot from CD. If I turn it on, I get a gray screen that usually just turns my computer back off, if thats not the case I get a screen that shows the finder icon and a question mark and then turns off.
All it will do is boot into open firmware mode. Currently the install disc is inside of it and I've tried booting the cd using "cd:, bxi" and "dir hd", and it can't open both. Does anyone know how to wipe the HD, and start the installer using firmware? Otherwise, I think I'll have to take out the harddrive and plug it into an external case and then wipe it.

i've had a Macbook for a couple years and I have some knowledge of OS X but this one has stumped me.My friend called me tonight and she told me on her new iMac that in the finder window, after clicking on Macintosh HD, the eject button was missing that should be next to the device. This apparently happened earlier today with a CD and happened when she called me with an External HDD.
She was however able to eject the stuff by either dragging it to the trash or doing "Open Apple" + E, key shortcut. I'm stumped on this because she was till able to eject the HDD or CD with the previous methods but the Finder, "eject" button for the devices was missing.

I bought a new Macbook Pro 15-in. late 2008 model battery on March 26th, 2012, but a month later I was never able to turn on my Mac again while using that battery.
-The battery is unable to charge and my Mac is unable to run without a battery pack inserted.
-The LED light on the charger keeps a constant green light, but the Mac will not turn on. Also, checking the battery, by pressing the silver button, it states that the battery pack only has a few "juice" in it left.
I'm now currently using my old Battery, and everything seems to be working just fine.Throughout the time of having the new battery, I always avoided overcharging it. Only 2 times where I fell asleep and it overcharged. I never continuously charged it, I only charged it when it was less than 10% of battery left. Although I wait to charge it only when it reaches below 10%, my mac becomes inactive for a few days. That's about all the information I can give from what I know. I'm unable to check the specs of the battery because the mac will not start. I'm really worried about what went wrong because it hasn't even been a month yet, and the battery died on me.
Info:
MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I am running OS 8.6 and have installed the iomega ware for classic on it (I believe the driver is 6.2.3). The drive will power on when I insert the drive. The drive is recognized by the Iomega Tools but will not recognize when a disk is inserted. The drive does not even try to spin up when a disk is inserted. Iomega tools says no disk is inserted. The only way to eject the disk is to put a paperclip in the "emergency eject" hole.

I am leaving for a week long trip and many parts of it will not be able to run the computer off of the powercord, which is a problem because I get about 40mins of wordprocessing use out of it when I run the battery alone. Can someone explain what the significance of these levels are for my Powerbook G4 15'' (Alm) 1.25GHz, namely the cycle count and full charge/remaining capacity?

My first gen Mac Pro has a seemingly strange issue, whereby when the Mac Pro starts up and begins booting into OSX (Just as the Apple logo appears) Both dvd drives eject. To resolve this I have checked the jumpers on the back of the drives and have tried:
-Both on Cable Select
-Top drive on Master and then bottom drive on Slave.
It happens every time the mac starts up. My computer stats should be below.
Mac Pro 2x2.6ghz Dual core intel.
3Gb Ram
1Tb Hard drive
8800GTS Graphics
Version OSX = 10.5.6
