I installed Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) on to my iPod. I tried booting on my Power Mac, which I used to install OS X, but no video. It won't even boot to X on my MacBook! What should I do?
I recently bought a firewire 800 dual 1.42 GHz G4 power mac, which didn't have a hard drive or memory. I bought some memory from OWC and I threw a hard drive in it. When I press the power button I hear the startup sound however there is no video on the monitor. I'm trying to figure out whether it's a bad motherboard, video card, or if it could possibly be something else like the power supply. I have reset the PMU to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to figure out which component is bad?
can I boot from my HP iPod via firewire on a 2007 imac or an i7 MBP? in other words, do early iPods play nice w/ intel macs via firewire? the reason I ask is because I'm tempted by OWC's 40GB SSD sale and want to try SSD's without the risk that comes w/ surgery (save for the old iPod).
I have found that by plugging in my Apogee Duet firewire audio interface and ONLY WHEN AppleFWAudio was loaded there was a 10c CPU raise that was making my MBP (late 2008) hot!I wanted to monitor the power that was required for Duet to run and to see if the temperature rise was due to that, so:With Apogee drivers uninstalled (just to be sure its not their drivers related, which is notMBP on battery power with System Profiler opened (to monitor the mA required by the computer from System Profiler -> Power)
I am going to have to put the install disk in, however at the moment I have the apple care cd in the mac - but the eject button on the keyboard does nothing - is there another way I can get the disk out? I just get stuck on the 'flashing question mark' stage.
My G5 Power Mac Dual 2.0 run well. But I want to start the system from the dvd. Every time I try it, the mac crashed by starting up. On the screen you read. please start again.... If the Systems runs from Hard disc it runs perfect. And you insert the DVD, there is no problem. I tried two different System DVDs 10.4 and one 10.3. All run normal, but when I boot from it them the Mac crash every time. The same when I boot with "alt" and change to dvd start.
Can't get back to my desk top. All I have is a black screen with white text starting Darwin bsd. Have tried a safe reboot but after grey then normal blue screen when loading, this disappears and I get back to the black screen again.
I have a great G5 Dual Processor, and would like to add a PCI-X card to give me more Firewire connections. I have been all over the internet and made a lot of phone calls, but no one seems to have a clue as to where such a beast may be found. If not, are there any work-arounds?

I want to add a second external drive, either 500 GB or 750 GB. It would be partitioned into one partition for cloning, and the other for TimeMachine when I upgrade to Leopard. Currently my external drives are all Firewire. Would there be any significant advantage for me to buy a SATA controller card for my G5 and then go to eSATA rather than Firewire? One online dealer I contacted said that the speed advantage for the SATA for my uses would be minimal, but the possible headaches of eSATA over Firewire could be signifcant. I"m conisedering the 750 GB LaCie d2 Quadra drive.

3 times in the last week, my 400 & 800 firewire ports are not working. I am using a firewire hub with several external drives. I unplug everything, reboot and then they work. anyone know what is going on?
Both my firewire ports are not working. No signal or connection with external hard drive or video camera. Firewire does not appear under Network Status and is grayed out under Network Port Configurations.
I have a MBP intel that I made a clone off via superduper on my portable firewire hd. I'm trying to get my power mac g5 to boot off of the clone via the portable hd.I've tried checking Startup Disk within the sys pref area but it does not list the portable hd there, although, I am able to see the hd on the desktop (add, del, move files etc)so the portable hd is working fine.I've also tried booting up holding down the Option key but it doesn't work, I think it is because I am using a wireless logitech pc keyboard (no i dont have any other keyboard to use unfortunately).I did a search and apple said to make sure that I update my firmware? Not sure where to find that specific firmware to make this work.
When I plug in a DV camera to the 400 firewire buss and go to system profile/firewire, the DV camera doesn't show up.....but, when I turn the firewire hard drives off (pull their power) thus disconnecting them from the 800 firewire buss, the DV camera shows up....
If I have my firewire external drives connected to the 800 firewire port, and the DV camera connected to the 400 firewire port sometimes (not often) the the dv camera works, most of the time it doesn't..The only way I can get the dv camera to work is to disconnect the firewire hard drives from the computer then all is good in the land of "MAC)..
I am going to buy a new 17" MacBook Pro soon and I've been doing research on how to customize it when I get it. I want to install my own SLC SSD as the internal drive because it's cheaper and has a longer life expectancy. Because of the limited capacity of SSDs these days, I am also going to be getting an external HDD to keep all my data that would not benefit greatly from SSD speeds, as well as for backups of everything on the internal SSD.
I wanted this external HDD to meet three criteria:1TB capacity7200rpm speed2.5" size, so that I can use it without needing to plug it into a power socket There aren't many options to choose from that meet those requirements. In fact, I only found one candidate, the “Seagate Constellation.2”. It looks like a good set of specs and Seagate is a reputable hard disk maker I've read, so I'm just about ready to buy one. My only point of concern is whether it can be powered and operated solely over FireWire, or if I would have to use a power adapter.
So my question is, can the 17" MBP (Late 2011) supply enough watts/volts/amps over FireWire 800 in order to power this Seagate disk? (Sorry for rambling too much) I have looked at the spec sheet and read up on IEEE 1394, i.e. FireWire, and I wasn't able to come up with a definitive answer, and I'm not even confident about how these electronics operate (specifically if the watt/volt/ampere requirements have to be met precisely or if they can go over or under a little, or a lot). I hope someone helps me out here.
Now here are the relevant specs, from the ST91000640NS product page: 12V start max current0.85A5V start max current0.51AAverage idle power2.95WAverage operating power5.43W According to Wikipedia's article on IEEE 1394, FireWire can supply a maximum of 45W and 30V. Apple's FireWire Ports Specifications article says: Input voltage range8 to 33 VInput power0.3 WOutput voltage range12 V to 30 V (varies by product)Output powerminimum of 7 W per port The disk will be put in an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Mini enclosure, by the way.
I have had an intermittent problem. Every so often (once a month), my iPhone will not connect to my computer, it does not charge, nor does it show up in iTunes. I checked out 3 different cables, and none work (cable problem eliminated), I tried 3 different iPods, none charged or showed up (iPhone and iPod problem eliminated). I tried both the front and the rear USB ports and nothing ever happens. As far as I recall, this problem just cures itself after a few days. Any idea what I need to have repaired to stop this maddening problem?

The firewire port on the front of my machine is bad. I can't transfer any kind of data using it. The port on the back as well as all USB ports work fine. Would this need a complete motherboard replacement? Would it even be worth doing? Could I build a dual processing machine or buy one cheaper?
I have to get a external drive for backup with Time Machine. Everyone says to get Firewire I guess because its faster...but.Do you need to use the power cord for those? I know some USB drives you can only use the USB cable and it powers it which is handy because I move the drive a lot and I hate connecting two cables....do firewire drives need both cables?
I have a WD Terabyte drive that I have used for over a year with no problems. A couple of days ago my roommate went to use it and disconnected the drive from my computer without ejecting it first. He used it with his PC and disconnected it without "safely removing" it from his computer and now it will not mount to my desktop of been seen by PC. Disk Utility sees the device but I get an error when I try to repair the disk or verify the disk. It gives me an "error on exit" message. I really need the 700GB of info on that drive. Don't know what to do next.
Someone switched off the power to my iMac the other day. Since I've rebooted:a] System Profiler shows no awareness of FireWire ("Unable to list FireWire devices" in red) b] Every boot takes about five minutes, 3+ of which seems to be spent waiting for a response from the FireWire socket (the logs show a 3-minute gap followed by a line that goes something like this:"/usr/lib/exec/hidd: Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet") c] if it's idle long enough to go to sleep, it goes into a kernel panic (the last line in the log before the panic says"kernel[0]: IOPMSlotsMacRISC4::determineSleepSupport has canSleep true")b] looks connected to a], but I can't see any connection with c] (apart from the reference to IO).

I have an old macbook that has all my songs on, as well as my iPod. I have recently got an iMa which currently has no music on, how would I transfer the music from the iPod to the new iMac, or alternatively from the old Macbook to the iMac?
Just upgraded to the iPhone OS 3.0 on my 1st gen iPod Touch and when I turn the volume up whilst it's in the iPod Hi-Fi, the volume dips when I've finished turning it up... When I push the volume up again the volume slider on the iPod touch then moves down to where it dipped.it's quite hard to explain! Basically, when I turn the volume up to 50%, the sound dips to 25%.... the slider still shows 50% until I press the volume up button and it would move the slider to 25%. (If I wanted to play my music at 50% I would have to turn it up to 75% and wait for it to dip to 50%!)I have reset the iPod touch and restored it but the problem still exists. OS 1.0 and 2.0 didn't have this problem. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a solution?
i just got a new mac and didnt want to migrate everything so that i could keep this new mac "clean" of my old stuff however im having a hell of a time transfering ical and address book over! Most importantly i got a new ipodtouch also and im wondering if anyone know how to transfer the stickie notes from my old ipod to new ipod?
I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!
I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?
I googled it and it didn't help out as much. I have this Shure Mic and it has MIDI input and would like to have some kind of adapter to firewire. I know there is an USB adapter, but i would like to use firewire. It can be firewire 400 or 800. I like to record some songs for GarageBand.
