Power Mac G5 :: Can I Install A Radeon 9600 Pro?
Dec 15, 2007I picked up a new ATI Radeon 9600 Pro for my PowerMAC G5 D2.3 to run my 30" ACD.
I was going over the installation booklet and its all in PC lingo.

I recently purchased a 30" apple monitor to be used in tandem with my 23" cinema monitor. The card that was shipped with my G5 twin 2.5 GZ will not support the 30" as it lacks dual link dvi. Hence the 9600 pro for Mac & PC card. The problem is this...The screens light up at start up but the computer crashes before the boot sequence completes. I took the card to the apple service center where I bought it and it worked fine on both their G4 and G5 machines running Tiger. I cant make it work on mine in Tiger or Leopard.

I've just got a Radeon 9600 Pro PC/Mac edition, as the 9600XT that came with the G5 died on me last week. It's taken an age to get it working, I could only boot in safe mode, in the end I deleted all my existing ATI extensions, installed the ATI Displays 4.5.7 and it works. BUT ... (and it's a big but)... performance is VERY slow and System Profiler says Core Image and Quartz Extreme are not supported. If anyone's got any ideas I'd be most grateful.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm searching for upgrade video cards for my dual 533Mhz digital audio G4 PM. I've noticed that there are several sellers on eBay selling ATI Radeon 9600's and claim they work on PM G5's as well as PM G4's. [URL]. Could these cards just be stock Apple cards pulled from a G5 that happen to work in a G4, or are they altered or flashed PC cards that work on G5's and G4's. Is it common knowledge that you can pull a 9600 out of a stock G5 and use it in a G4?

I have bought a Radeon 4850 graphics card to play some games in Windows under boot camp. The card comes with a mini 6 pin power connector that connects to the graphics card and supplied lead has at the other end a 4 pin power connector to go into the computer's power supply by the looks of the diagram in the box. My question is do I need to connect this to the Mac Pro power supply? The ATI 2600 card in the machine doesn't look like it connects to another power supply.
If I do need to use this then I can only see two small power connectors on the motherboard near the fan, does anyone know anywhere in the UK that would sell a compatible power lead?
I recently posted a question regarding an Apple DVI-ADC converter/adapter. It appeared the adapter wasn't working until I found out my ATI Radeon X1900 G5 Mac Edition, (which I just installeld), isn't functioning properly. In this screen shot you'll see the resolution is stuck at one setting with no options:

And in this screen shot I was reminded about a problem with the data displayed in the system profile:[URL]However, the data/description error is not my main concern. I'm wondering if I need to download this driver to correct the card's malfunction?

I was keeping this card as a spare, (since they're rare as gold). BTW, when I put the stock OEM GeForce 6600LE 128MB PCIe back in, I was able to adjust the screen resolutions for both a 20" Cinema Display, and a 17" LCD Studio Display, and got the DVI-ADC adapter to work.Â
I would like to ask you people is there any chance that I can install Radeon HD 4850 512 MB into power mac g5 late 2005 ? actually this one :

I bought the family pack for Leopard. I installed Leopard on my G4 laptop fine. When I tried tried to install on my G5 I got a fail to install due to a source problem (?)In any event I restarted from the Tiger hard drive and it's totally screwed up my computer. It tries to start and I get initial Apple logo for about 2 seconds then it locks up and I get a bunch of computer code.

For the owners of a uMBP with switchable graphics, how often do you keep your 9600 GT on and what kind of tasks do you use the GPU for? I got the mid-ranged 15" model for the 9600 GT but I can't see myself using it until the release Starcraft II ... and even after I have my desktop with an HD 4870 1GB. Do any of you regret purchasing the model with the 9600 GT?
View 15 Replies View RelatedI also tried installing Windows to see if the 9600 would show up there, but I get a blank screen when booting the XP CD. I get the same blank screen when trying a Linux CD. Is this perhaps because the MBP is trying to use the 9600 but it's borked and not displaying anything.
View 8 Replies View RelatedBenchmarks say 9600 has about twice as much muscle as the 9400 right? So what kind of improvement are we talking about in real life. Especially gaming?
About twice as much frames per second in GPU intensive games like FPS? What about in SRPGs? Similar as well?
I got a MacBook Pro (2.66, has the 9600 graphics card with 256 vram), and I've been amazed by the battery life I get with the 9400. My question is, I don't notice any performance difference between the two graphics cards.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a late 2008 MBP with the two graphic cards. Something I noticed was that there was almost no noticeable between the two, even during tasks that would benefit from the 9600, like gaming. For example, to play the Mac Bioshock demo with no lag on max graphic settings, I had to lower the resolution to 1024 by 640 on the 9600. When I tried those same settings on the 9400, it was almost exactly the same performance.
Some I did notice was the under the 9600 stacks appeared much smoother, but scrolling up and down in any window (browser, finder, ect.) was extremely jerky. Under the 9400 scrolling is entirely smooth.
So I am going to be getting a refurb uMBP towards the end of the week and I am trying to decide between the 256mb and the 512mb versions of the 9600M. I will be using it mostly for surfing, blogging, programming, photoshop and gaming. Obviously the gaming is what really poses the question.
I plan to play things like WoW, Aion, L4D2, Borderlands, CoD:MW2, Batman Arkham Asylum, and the like. Obviously this will be done in windows via boot camp.
I purchased a 15" Mac Book pro a little less than 1 year ago. Right after getting it I changed the video to the 9600 and haven't changed it since. I tried switching it back to the 9400 last night and only got a black screen. If I do a hard shutdown and restart the system comes back up on the 9600 and runs fine. If I try switching back to the 9400 the same thing happens again (black screen). Obviously the 9400 worked fine when the system was purchased but hasn't been used since then so I don't know at what point the problem initially started. From what I've read, there are problems with some of the NVIDIA chips but it normally affects the higher GPU because of heat, not the lower one.

View 16 Replies View RelatedAre there any improvements using the 9600 over the 9400 when using photoshop or illustrator? I always use the 9400 on my mbp, with the 9600 the fans start to spin really soon, it's so annoying trying to focus on your work with this thing blowing like an airbus.

i can see linux as a thumbnail picture, which i can select, and the cd loads all necessary drivers to memory etc.then the boot shell screen appears, explaining me to press return key, or choose other option. i did choose pressing the return key. mac is reading the cd, until a few seconds later a black screen appears and nothing happens!.i also tried live install.it could be a graphics driver problem ? ( the graphics card is, i think, a geforce 5500 fx ultra 128mb agp). the mac did work perfect before i got it, with osx and apps, every thing was ok, but my friend gave me this with a clean install, no osx. from this, experience i can see, that the mac cpu, dvdrom, motherboard and, memory / graphics card is working perfect.i am in doubt about the hardddisk, shouldn't the led on the front case blink, meaning it reading from the hard-disk ?.later on i will try the hdd and dvdrom to try different jumper position, and try another linux distro, eventually i should be able get this mac up and running! otherwise i have to get another old mac g5, which i have to pay alot, properly?. hope not. apple wants 100£ for a leopard dvd. they must be kidding!. I have a Power Mac G4 with dual 1.25GHz Power PC G4 processor with 2Gb SDRAM.I am on OS X 10.5.8.Three questions:
1) Can I go to 10.6 or higher?
2) If I change the processor out to an Intel, can I go higher?
3) Is there any upgrades that would allow me to put a later OS X version on it, and if there is, is it worth upgrading?
I know it's old, but it works fine, and this is my first Mac (I've had it for 1 year - It was given to me), and I am breaking myself slowly from the PC
