Power Mac G5 :: Audio Capture (cassette Tape) And Convert To MP3
Oct 5, 2007
I've been doing some searching and can't find any threads regarding capturing audio (cassette tape) to a mac. Wanted to rip some old school tunes from some tapes and convert to MP3. I connected an old tape deck to my G5 via ADS Pyro A/V Link (RCA audio input to Pyro, firewire connection out to G5), that doesn't seem to work. I've also tried connecting to my iMic USB, but that's not picking up any audio either. I've tried using QT audio recording, iMovie, FCP, and Analogue Ripper with no luck. They recognize the Pyro and iMic, but not picking up audio.
Information:
G5 Dual 1.8Ghz (Q37), 4.5GB ram, Pioneer 112D burner (internal)
Mac OS X (10.4.10)
320GB + 500GB SATA HDDs, Radeon 9600 Pro Mac 256MB, LaCie firewire burner (ext)

I have: FCP X 10.1.3
Hi 8 tapes and camera
VHS and SVHS tapes and camera
JVC GY-DV5000U camera and mini DV tapes
Firewire cable
Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter
These tapes and cameras are unsupported in FCP X 10.1.3.
How can I capture (import) the video tape segments onto my Mac OS X version 10.9.4 so that I can edit the video in FCP? Are there special procedures or products that are needed?
Info:
iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

When I'm trying to capture on my iMac using FCP7 through a Canon XL1 I get this message: "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape". Now I know it's not the tape as when I use my iBook to capture (fcp5) it's fine. I know I could use the iBook but I've been having problems with it in other forms so I can't rely on that working forwver and once/when it dies, I'll be stuck. I've tried all the usuals: rebooting, different cam to transfer, different cables, re-instaling FCP and I'm still scratching my head.

I have an old 4-track tape recorder with 4 outputs, which I would like to connect to a Mac and import all 4 tracks at once to GarageBand for editing. I've seen USB adapters that have two RCA inputs, and am thinking that if I purchased and connected 2 of these adapters, I would be able to run them simultaneously.

The audio and video are out of sync after importing to FCP 10.1 from my mini DV tape source. The audio and video are in sync coming out of the tape deck but they are out of sync by over a second in FCP. How to correct this?

I want to convert some video files (specifically swf in this case) to audio files so I can listen on my iPod. I looked everywhere and can't find some free software that does that. There are tons that have trial periods with lots of limitations (like it won't convert anything larger than a 5k size file) so I don't want those because I won't know if the thing works well unless I pay for it. I'm not opposed to paying for a converter IF I know it works awesome on a Mac.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" - Model A1226 (Santa Rosa, circa 2007). I need to replace my right fan. AppleCare just expired (of course). But replacing the fan should be pretty easy, I think.
The only question is about the tape securing the fan to the heatsink. On the old fan it looks like electrical tape, but on the "sticky" side, it looks like there is a bit of copper (?) in the middle.
So my assumption is that regular old electrical tape is not appropriate, but some special kind of electrical tape. What type of tape is that?

Can anyone offer advice on how to capture streaming audio with VLC?
Preferably in mp3 format, but ogg would be ok, too.
I've tried just about every configuration option I can find, but although the stream plays (RealAudio), VLC fails to capture it.
BTW - the VLC site says that if VLC can play it, it can capture. It's a shame it doesn't go on to say how (well, other than via come pretty hair-raising command line stuff that I really don't think applies to what I'm trying to get).

I have recently been asked to help set up a "TV studio" for a church. It is basically a project designed to turn the church pulpit into a working TV studio where weekly sermons can be streamed onto the web, or even played on local public access TV channels, for those tech savvy partitioners that can't make it to regular sermons. The budget for equipment is very generous, and the church has expressed a preference for using mac computers for everything from initial sound and video capture, production editing, and streaming to the web and/or local TV stations.
Equipment they already have is the typical stuff you might find in a modern church, eg. 4 mics on and around the pulpit, a fairly new sound board (not sure how many channels, but at least 10 or more), some old mini-dv camcorders, etc. I'm starting from scratch here. This is an equipment and software question, but I'm posting on the software forum because they have already decided on a mac computer. It is just a question of whether an iMac or a Mac Pro tower will be used.

I have found that by plugging in my Apogee Duet firewire audio interface and ONLY WHEN AppleFWAudio was loaded there was a 10c CPU raise that was making my MBP (late 2008) hot!I wanted to monitor the power that was required for Duet to run and to see if the temperature rise was due to that, so:With Apogee drivers uninstalled (just to be sure its not their drivers related, which is notMBP on battery power with System Profiler opened (to monitor the mA required by the computer from System Profiler -> Power)

I would like to convert at least some of my thousands of hours to audio tapes to CD's. It would be a blessing if I could do something about the sound quality, compile songs, etc. I've downloaded the version of "Audacity" that matches my PowerPC G4, and it seems like it will do a lot of what I want. Now, the question is, how do I get a signal from my tape deck that my Mac will recognize? Will it be enough to simply use a RCA/USB connector, or do I need some kind of converter? I notice, btw, that I do not have an "audio input" jack, which might have answered my question.

I am working on a project where I am having my wife's grandmother telling her life story into a digital audio recorder which creates WMA audio files that play fine in QuickTime with Flip4Mac installed. I want to have these files transcribed into text. She speaks clearly so I think a speech-to-text program may do the job for the most part and do some manual touch up afterward. Can anyone recommend what I should use for this job? The only program I know of is MacDictate/MacSpeech. That's $150+ so that's out of the question. Is their anything out there that works and won't break the bank?

I am wondering if someone could PLEASE recommend a good FREE program that can convert my .wav file to a .mp3 file. I've downloaded 3 programs, and none have worked.
I also need to find a way to make an audio loop. However, Garageband won't take my .WAV file which means I still need to convert the file. Once its done converting it should take it though right?

I still have the same G4 Digital Audio which came used but with a clean OS, which I managed to up grade to reach the 10.4.11. Its works great and I love it. I can only imagine using a real Mac Pro 2012. The software is legacy and It will not support the QuarkExpress9 for example. So what if I found and upgraded to the 10.5.8 or the max OS my G4 can handle? Is it worth it?
