my work has recently switched from macs to p.cs anyhow they have recently posted some older macs and laptops in a free draw. my name came up against a 2002 white ibook g3, below are the specs as listed by my company:

my question is how/can i upgrade the o.s to a higher level (currently at osx 10.2) & what is the realistic o.s i can get to whilst still working to a realistic level.?? would i need more ram/memory?? its in pretty good nick generally and would be a shame not to make the best out of it.
Can I upgrade my ibook 10.2.8 OS X to a higher version? If so how? If not, better to get a new computer? I was trying to install a broadband modem but requires OS of 10.3 or higher.
I'm not computer savvy but can understand enough to get by, as long as it's plain English. I want to be able to use my laptop to access the internet, anywhere & anytime.
I am operating Mac osx 10.5.8 why it wont upgrade when Iclick for software updates?

I'm going out this week to buy Snow Leopard and I've never in my life upgraded an operating system before because usually by the time a new OS comes out I need a new computer anyway. However, that was when I was a Windows user. Now, I'm using a Macbook Pro that I've had since December of 2006 and it's still running like a champ, but I would like to have all the latest features that come with Snow Leopard. My questions are as follows:Is there anything special I need to do prior to installing the new OS? Should I do a clean install? If so, are there any special files I should back up outside of my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and my documents?

Ever since upgrading to OSX 10.7.4, Safari has been very slow loading websites that normally are very fast. When I open Safari or load a page I get the spinning ball for as long as fifteen seconds. This is especially problematic when I initially open Safari in the morning after my iMac has been asleep for several hours.

I have downloaded Lion OS 10.7.XX trhough App Store. When I tried re installing the OS it failed after the bootup due to the Hard drive error. Now it is recommending me to format the Harddrive then re install the OS. I'd like to go back to my previous us so that I back up my data prior to formatting the hard drive. How can I boot from my previos operating system that was installed on the device?

my system preferences froze on me a couple weeks ago while i was trying to change my screen saver. i've forced quit the program and computer, but when i boot back up, and reopen system preferences it opens up where it froze in the backgrounds settings. yesterday i shot down to see my buddy at future shop and he tried a few things and nothing changed. he called apple and they said this issue has come up a few times now. they recomended to delete a few uneeded files in the program or reinstalling the operating system. we deleted the files and nothing happened. so he told me how to reinstall the OS. i said goodbye because he left for cuba today. now i have time to do the reinstall and dont remember how he said to do this.

There's speculation that it's L2 cache is bigger than the 3mb used on the slower mac mini core2duo's.

View 18 Replies View RelatedI've been using a LaCie Quadra 2TB Hard drive for a little over a month now.
I've been noticing in that time that whenever I have the HD mounted my system seems to run slower in that it has lots of sporadic hang ups. I get the spinning beachball in all sorts of programs from Safari to Microsoft Word.
I am of course assuming the Hard drive is to blame, so I was wondering:
Can running an external hard drive (for use with Time Machine and general storage) slow a system down (in particular applications)?
The hard drive is a 7200rpm drive and its connected via firewire 800 if that is of any importance.
I copied a lot of information to my friend's mid-2010 MBP, about 80GB of data. Used iChat - transfer took about three hours but it got there. Before the transfer her laptop was very quick - didn't have much installed, plenty of free space. After the transfer, the laptop still have a lot of free space (>100GB) but is very slow. Before the laptop would take maybe 1 minute to boot up.. now it's over three. She experiences bouncing beach balls when loading applications.

A while back I "upgraded" to Yosemite and noticed my system ran slower and some web pages wouldn't load. I had Mountain Lion with less issues and less pinwheels. I went to YO to improve the slow loading but I now feel it is worse.
Should I return to ML or work out issues with YO? I've talked with a AppleRep a month back and did a PRAM reset and disc repair..My modem and router have been replaced without any notice in improvement.

I am running OS 10.5.8 with Windows XP dual boot on my MacBook that I purchased in late 2008.Can I easily upgrade to Lion at this point without having to reinstall the Windows XP/dual boot etc?

I have a mirrored drive door G4 [dual 1.25 GHz] with 10.2.8. The newest browser I can run is Firefox 2.0.0.20. That browser will not successfully run some sites. Monster.com, for example.
I am unemployed just now and cannot afford to spend money on a new Intel machine. I have critical need of being able to run what I have here now:
Photoshop CS [no number suffix]
InDesign 3.0.1
Microsoft office X, 10.1.6
Filemaker pro 6 [although I do also own 7]
Text Soap 3
Roxio Toast 5.2.1
I have been told I could upgrade this G4 to 10.4. Supposedly that would allow me to run a current browser. I don't know if that is true, it is just something I was told.
I have multiple fears about making such an upgrade. First, where would you get the discs to do that, and how could you get any patches or upgrades that were created subsequent to its introduction?
Second, would all my software listed above work with 10.4?
I imagine I would need to make up an external drive that completely mirrored my current setup, in case it went wrong and I had to go back to what I have.
My need is to have a computer I can use to look for jobs effectively. Monster.com won't even let me log in with this browser. I consider buying some used machine with a current browser to use for my job search, but hate to waste the money.
Do the experienced and knowledgeable here have some advice for me? Is there a safe way to make some changes on this machine and retain my current array of software?
As soon as I get a job I will spend the money [I currently have saved] to buy a new Intel Mac. I just don't want to let that money go while I am unemployed. I have been for three months and have not gotten so much as a single interview.
I upgraded my mac, to the latest version of the OS. Half way through the update, the power went, and my whole system, is messed up.
I thought, its ok, ill re install it from the disk, ill only lose software that i have installed, all my data is backed up, its fine. After 1 hour of installing mac OSX.5 the loaded, fine... but a few problems.
The software that came on the mac, is not there now.
My mac keeps restarting my Airport.
My question, if i use the disks that came with my mac, can i have the software back on OSX.4 and then upgrade it like when OSX.5 came out? Would i have hte software back?
