I just upgraded my hard drive in my macbook pro to the 500 GIG western digital 7200 rpm drive. Now it seems like my systems is a bit slower that when the 200 gig drive was in it.
View 9 RepliesI've been using a LaCie Quadra 2TB Hard drive for a little over a month now.
I've been noticing in that time that whenever I have the HD mounted my system seems to run slower in that it has lots of sporadic hang ups. I get the spinning beachball in all sorts of programs from Safari to Microsoft Word.
I am of course assuming the Hard drive is to blame, so I was wondering:
Can running an external hard drive (for use with Time Machine and general storage) slow a system down (in particular applications)?
The hard drive is a 7200rpm drive and its connected via firewire 800 if that is of any importance.
Do Macs get slower as you fill the Hard Drive like PCs? The reason I?m asking this question is because I just transferred 40gb of files from my external hard drive (to use this HD with time machine) to my computer so I ended up with 80gb in my MacBook and I?m afraid that this will affect the performance since the HD is only 160gb. This usually happens with PCs.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter owning my Imac for about 12 months or more now I've noticed lately that it has become much much slower. I expected it to slow down just like all computers once you have used up a fair bit of memory space but I haven't used up much at all. I've tried to avoid using up too much space on my Mac by using an external storage drive but I'm wondering if that has the opposite effect? I've got the usual apps that help the Mac to run efficiently and I've followed various threads that show how to optimize the mac so I'm assuming there isn't all that much tweaking left to do... could be wrong though. A long time ago (i'm not sure what got into me) but I downloaded the apple developer software, I don't intend on using it but i don't what the correct names of the apps are and I don't want to uninstall the wrong stuff. I have tested the speed of my Mac with and without the external memory drive but didn't find much difference, but perhaps my tests weren't entirely accurate.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi just installed a new 2nd, (750 gb) hard drive into my g5 because my first 250gb is nearly full. I'm trying to launch logic but the file is way to big. It wont let me install this program from my new, second hard drive because the message i get is that it supposed to launch from the primary or running hard drive. Can anyone tell me how i can make my second hard drive my new primary hard drive? I got the .dmg for my leapord osx. but not the originals anymore. can anybody help me with this. i'm pretty sure it's simple, i just don't know how to do this.

I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.
What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.
Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?
There's speculation that it's L2 cache is bigger than the 3mb used on the slower mac mini core2duo's.

It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.

View 1 Replies View RelatedPut snow leopard on my 15" MacBook Pro 2.2ghz core 2 duo, 2ghz ram, 128mb video ram computer (purchased in late 2007 right after Leopard came out). The computer was running great on Leopard, no hitches whatsoever. Put snow leopard on it, expecting to experience performance boosts, cool new features (LOL), and just all in all a more stable computer. Got none of these.
Everything on the computer runs slower than before. Noticeably. Battery life is significantly less than before as well.
Anyone else experience these same issues on their Macbook?
So I have 2 USB Ports on my Mac. I use both of them and I am looking to get a Mic for recording youtube stuff. I use one for my wireless mouse, and I use the other for an external hard drive because the amout of space on my Mac is no-where near enough for what I am going to use up.
I am just wondering if there is a way I can either:
1. Get more USB ports (if its possible)
2. Hook up my mouse to a Thunderbolt port (again if that is possible)
or 3. Hook up my External Hard-Drive to the thunderbolt port.

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

I assumed it was because it was in a Windows format, so booted Windows, but it then turned out it wasn't formatted at all. What is the easiest way to make this an HFS+ (the Mac OS extended format), and how do I do it as I can't see it anywhere on the Mac (including Disk Utility)?

I recently bought a 500GB 7200rpm drive, so when the new machine arrived I just swapped out the stock drive with my 500GB. The 500GB has a relatively fresh install of Snow Leopard. Everything is running pretty well, although I feel like I'm seeing a little more sluggishness in some apps (Aperture, for one) than I expected. It's pretty impressive that an OSX boot disk can boot any mac, but I wonder if there's anything I ought to do�preference files I should delete, for example�to make sure that the OS and the new mac are in sync.

I upgraded it from 250GB to a 500GB 7200RPM WD Scorpio Black. However the noise was definitely noticeable for me and I have changed it back to the 250 5400RPM GB Seagate Momentus. Sucks to have lost the money
Now the thing is I need 500 GB and I want it to be a internal hard disk. I was thinking about buying 500 GB 5400RPM Scorpio Blue or a Seagate 5400RPM Momentus. Not decided yet(any recommendation?).
The problem is though I want to begin using my system. I want to install programs etc. Is there an easy way to copy the whole system to the new hard drive when it arrives?

It won't boot off the system DVD.
It does power up, but all I get is the gray screen with the flashing question mark.

I'm not sure what is causing it....Is there a log that will show me any memory leaks or at least what was using up the most memory/CPU at the time it freezes? a lot of times it freezes awhile after the screensaver kicks in.
