MacBook :: Move Data From Old Drive Including The Operating System Lion?
May 28, 2012
I'm buying a brand new hardrive for my 13inch macbook, but need to know the best way to move data from my old drive including the operating system Lion
just bought a new hard drive from OWC 500 GB 7200rpm, want to install it in my 15in unibody macbook pro june 2009. Bought the kit that came w/ the inclosure so i can turn my old drive into an external.
Here's my question is there a way i can move all my data to my new hard drive before putting it into the computer, so once its in its ready to go? I don't have the leopard disc w/ me. I left it at home and didn't bring it back to school w/ me.
Alright, so my hard drive died a week ago and I bought a new one. I am positive that I have installed it correctly. But when I run the install discs, after I choose english as the language, it says "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer". I am using the install discs that my macbook came with. I have tried following many online tutorials that involve partitioning and formatting but I can't seem to get it to work.
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17 Inch with 750 GB of space on its hard drive. About a month and half ago I bought a 3 TB Time Capsule and I know that Time Capsule, together with Time Machine, basically takes periodic snapshots of your hard drive and will rearrange/clean/delete files on your hard drive. What I want to know is that since I'm about to run out of space on the internal hard drive can I move a good chunk of the data into the Time Capsule and free up that data on internal hard drive. Videos take up about 75% of my MacBook Pro's hard drive so video's are my biggest problem. If I can't do this with the Time Capsule I guess that's a con of the Time Capsule/Time Machine.Â

y question is : should I try to reinstall the entire operating system on to the g drive and boot from and use that as the main drive, or should I just learn how to configure all my programs to save to the g-drive. I have tons of dvds with video and data on them because I ran out of space long ago and so I am finally going to have some space so I am excited about having the g drive.I ask these questions because I have read in the past that the internal mac mini drives actually slow down the system, however I dont know if this is still true, I know the bus speed is faster etc in the new ones
Im planing on buying a 27" iMac with the quad i7. I was wondering if it would be possible to replaced the superdrive with an intel ssd for the operating system. Has anybody done this yet on a previous generation imac and how did it work out.
I have downloaded Lion OS 10.7.XX trhough App Store. When I tried re installing the OS it failed after the bootup due to the Hard drive error. Now it is recommending me to format the Harddrive then re install the OS. I'd like to go back to my previous us so that I back up my data prior to formatting the hard drive. How can I boot from my previos operating system that was installed on the device?
my system preferences froze on me a couple weeks ago while i was trying to change my screen saver. i've forced quit the program and computer, but when i boot back up, and reopen system preferences it opens up where it froze in the backgrounds settings. yesterday i shot down to see my buddy at future shop and he tried a few things and nothing changed. he called apple and they said this issue has come up a few times now. they recomended to delete a few uneeded files in the program or reinstalling the operating system. we deleted the files and nothing happened. so he told me how to reinstall the OS. i said goodbye because he left for cuba today. now i have time to do the reinstall and dont remember how he said to do this.
I just picked up a Powermac G5, 2.3 Ghz. model and was wondering if it supports the newer Apple operating systems? I believe it has 10.4 installed right now but would like something a little more updated if possible.
I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdriveÂ
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.
i mean seriously, if they are going to put notes, reminders, and imessage they might as well put i books on their, what if someone doesnt have an ipad and wants a textbook on their laptop for a class? or if they just dont have an ipad..
i need to install windows operating system on my apple as the programs i require for work only work on windows and i was wondering should i get windows 7 or wait until windows 8 comes out not sure whats the best thing to do other options was to buy a cheaper laptop but i wont really use the mac then if i do Â
i got me a new MAC after 10 years of windows. now i'm in the ****** situation that i can not even move a simple jpeg from my MACto a Harddrive. it says : `this item could not be moved because '' Motive '' cannot be modefied. In the old days this was an easy thing to do , move a jpeg from my PC to a connected Harddrive. now with that brandnew mac i can do nothin. does anyone else encounter such a thing and maybe solve it ??
A few days ago, the Apple Store gave me a free "upgrade" on my MacBook Pro, from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3. However, Apple's gift has turned into a nightmare for me. I'm far too busy with work deadlines to have time for the 10.7.3 learning curve at the moment. Instead, I just want to go back to the pleasingly predictable 10.6.8. Therefore, I'm going to back up all my data onto an external hard drive, then completely erase the internal hard drive, and just start again, with a clean install of 10.6.8.
However, in order to do that, I first need to retrieve a 200 GB folder from the Trash. The folder which is in the Trash has NOT been deleted. Instead, it's just sitting in the Trash, waiting to be deleted. However, when I attempt to drag the 200 GB folder out of the Trash, and put it back on the Desktop, 10.7.3 starts copying the entire folder, instead of what 10.6.8 would have done, which would have simply moved the folder onto the Desktop without copying it.
In plain English, all I want to do is MOVE a 200 GB folder out of the Trash, onto the desktop, without copying the folder. Simple in 10.6.8. An apparent impossibility in 10.7.3. I've tried holding the Command key down while dragging the folder out of the Trash, but that doesn't work. Any workaround, which would apply to the entire hard drive, plus all external hard drives, even if it has to be a Command Line which I type into Terminal, that would be brilliant.
Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. 4 GB RAM
I currently have a 2007 Mac Pro (intel). I hope soon to buy one of the latest 2009 Mac Pros. My question is: Can I move my existing system drive (10.6.2) to my new mac? Will the 2009 Mac Pro boot from it? I know this would not work on a windows machine as chip specific drivers get added at install time, but I was hoping I could get away with it with a Mac.
My new Hex Mac Pro is arriving on Sept 21 (ordered it on the 17th and shipped out within 3 hours!). My problem is how to setup my new Mac pro. My current set up is as follows
1. System Disk-with data on it. 2. Photos 3. Music 4. Partitioned disk-used for backup and the 2nd partition contains Windows 7 using Bootcamp.
With my new Mac pro I will be using an SSD installed in my optical Bay and will have 4 2tb hard drives. On the SSD I only want to have OSX and my applications with the data on another disk. My questions are:
1. What is the best way to transfer my present system disk to my new SSD without transferring the data? 2. What is the best way to transfer the other drives to the new drives? 3. Is there a way to connect both machines and transfer it that way, using Carbon Copy Cloner or some other method? 4. Will I be able to transfer Window 7/bootcamp through this method? 5. Am I better off just biting the bullet and reinstalling all apps and making a new partition and reinstalling Windows7/Bootcamp?
Sorry for the length of this thread but I am trying to avoid spending a week setting up my new Mac Pro. I appreciate any thoughts and strategy you might have.
I've had my Macbook for just a month now. When I first got it, I wasn't able to move any files to my Western Digital External (that works with my previous blackbook) and my other external. It says The item '(item name)' could not be moved because 'System' (or other folder name) cannot be modified. iWork 09 and Virtual Dj don't work either. I want to reformat the hdd, but I can't do that until I backup everything, which I can't do. I tried the second solution "Type this, followed by Return: sh /etc/rc" and my Mac said could not find this directory.
so i want to install a new operating system on my macbook will that set everything back to original settings and make it run like it was new again? cause its kinda slow nowa days.
