Usually when I shut down the system using the software "shut down" command, the system shuts down. Lately, I have had to use the shut down button which resuts in an improper shut down when I restart the computer. So, there is a software glitch. Is there anyway to correct this?

I was wondering about this the other day. XP kinda sucks but Vista seems even worse. Would Microsoft consider scrapping Win32 code and just jump on Unix or something like Apple did? And just why did Apple do what it did? What made them switch between proprietary OS code (up through 'X' was it?) and jump to Unix?

When I tried re installing the OS it failed after the bootup due to the Hard drive error. Now it is recommending me to format the Harddrive then re install the OS. my system preferences froze on me a couple weeks ago while i was trying to change my screen saver. i've forced quit the program and computer, but when i boot back up, and reopen system preferences it opens up where it froze in the backgrounds settings. yesterday i shot down to see my buddy at future shop and he tried a few things and nothing changed. he called apple and they said this issue has come up a few times now. they recomended to delete a few uneeded files in the program or reinstalling the operating system. we deleted the files and nothing happened. so he told me how to reinstall the OS. i said goodbye because he left for cuba today. now i have time to do the reinstall and dont remember how he said to do this.

I have a mirrored drive door G4 [dual 1.25 GHz] with 10.2.8. The newest browser I can run is Firefox 2.0.0.20. That browser will not successfully run some sites. Monster.com, for example.

I have been told I could upgrade this G4 to 10.4. Supposedly that would allow me to run a current browser. I don't know if that is true, it is just something I was told.
I have multiple fears about making such an upgrade. First, where would you get the discs to do that, and how could you get any patches or upgrades that were created subsequent to its introduction?
Second, would all my software listed above work with 10.4?
I imagine I would need to make up an external drive that completely mirrored my current setup, in case it went wrong and I had to go back to what I have.
My need is to have a computer I can use to look for jobs effectively. Monster.com won't even let me log in with this browser. I consider buying some used machine with a current browser to use for my job search, but hate to waste the money.
Do the experienced and knowledgeable here have some advice for me? Is there a safe way to make some changes on this machine and retain my current array of software?
As soon as I get a job I will spend the money [I currently have saved] to buy a new Intel Mac. I just don't want to let that money go while I am unemployed. I have been for three months and have not gotten so much as a single interview.
I upgraded my mac, to the latest version of the OS. Half way through the update, the power went, and my whole system, is messed up.
I thought, its ok, ill re install it from the disk, ill only lose software that i have installed, all my data is backed up, its fine. After 1 hour of installing mac OSX.5 the loaded, fine... but a few problems.
The software that came on the mac, is not there now.

My question, if i use the disks that came with my mac, can i have the software back on OSX.4 and then upgrade it like when OSX.5 came out? Would i have hte software back?

I've done this sort of thing before with other Macs by simply reinstalling the the start up disk - but this is where the problem lies - the disk that came with the Mac is only for OS 10.4.10 (Tiger) and the Mac is currently running OS 10.5.6 (Leopard) and I don't really want to downgrade (the weird thing is the Mac came with Leopard from the factory so I don't know whey it wasn't supplied with the disk). So is there any way I can delete everything else off the Mac (files, programs - AND MOST IMPORTANTLY change the "home file" name) with out loosing Leopard?

Is Fusion the best way to go, or should I get Parallels? (I haven't opened the Fusion software yet.)

I have an acoustic guitar, attached to my Mac Mini (Lion 10.7.3) via a guitar pickup by a jack to audio input, with output to external speakers. System prefs are 'Audio line in port' and 'headphone port' - the only choices - but it doesn't even 'see' the input - there's no response from the input volume bit. I can play itunes, dvds, cds through the external speakers, but not hear anything attached via the audio input. I tried through garageband, and set the audio according to instructions, but even with 'hear playing while recording' set, I can't hear it.Â
I had been able to hear the guitar through the speakers before I (unfortunately!) had to reinstall Lion. This may be part of the problem: I forgot (yes, I know - daft!) to install Snow Leopard first. However, I do have it on another partition, which seems to be sufficient as in all other respects Lion so far is working fine.
I'm trying out 10.7 for the first time (was using 10.6). I notice that in Finder, when I do shift-apple-F, to Find files by name, it doesn't seem to be searching system files like it did on 10.6. Is this configurable - how do I make it search and show me EVERY file on the disk matching criteria? I did a terminal command to show "hidden files" and now the Desktop has .localized and .SD_Store files (which I didn't want to see necessarily) but this hasn't seemed to help me find files below /Library and so on.

But when I open Applescript and try to save a script in the "Save As" window, it rejects any filename I give it. I copied and pasted an Apple script for toggling my sound output from Line Out to Headphones. So when I chose "Headphones" as the file name in the "Save As" window I keep getting this error message: "The document "Untitled" could not be saved as "Headphones". But it doesn't matter what name I give the applescript file, I keep getting this: The document "Untitled" could not be saved as "............"Â
