OS X Mavericks :: Make Messages App Show Names And Pictures By Default In Groups
Jun 25, 2014
Is there any way to make the Messages app show names and pictures by default in groups? It's kind of annoying to have to set that every time. I'm hoping Yosemite may add this option.
Messages keeps switching the conversation view from "Show Names and Pictures" to just "Show Pictures". This is in the menu under: View > Messages > Show Names and Pictures. I have to change it multiple times a day, including every time I open the app from a closed state.
This is very confusing in group iMessage conversations where all the iMessages are coming from the same grey silhouette icon. The issue is only happening on my Mac mini. It's not happening on my MacBook Air. Both are running Mavericks 10.9.3...So I keep changing the setting here, but it somehow just switches back to Show Pictures only:
Originally, notifications from Messages.app would show the contact name sending the message. I'm not sure what caused it to stop, but now all notifications show up as the phone number of the contact. In the actual app, the names look fine. Is there some way to get contact names to show up again?
I use messages a lot with chat rooms for work.   In the example shown below, I used to see the Chat Room name in bold on the left side like Drew DuP... and
I used to have the green dot with available in the bottom left corner with my status. Now all I see on the left hand side is a picture box with no name and the green dot/available is not there. When I have several different chat rooms going at one time, it's hard to quickly select the one I want. I have checked through all the preferences I can imagine and nothing has worked.Â
Messages and FaceTime in OS X show full names of your contacts. I cannot find a setting to show nicknames instead. I know editing the contacts would do the job. But it would be very dodgy as nobody's first or last name is 'Mum', 'Uncle Bob' or 'Shaggy'. Is there a way to show nicknames instead of full names in Messages and FaceTime?
How can you show a list of contacts (or buddies if you're using another IM/Chat like Yahoo) that is docked in, connected to, separate column or sub-window of the main Chat window...
I looked through all the Menu bar items and preferences and didn't see a single thing. If I activate my Yahoo chat profile/user a floating window pops up, but I can't find any info regarding combining the 2 windows / showing all info in 1 window.

How do I make sure my attachments to emails appear as icons and not as open files? Once they appear as open files I can double click and select 'view as icon' but they don't stay that way. When I send or file the email the attachment is usually open again.
I have created a group in the Address Book. When I create a new mail and entered the name of the group, Mail shows only the name of the first person in the the To: field. How can I get it to send mail to the whole group?Â
A step by step:Â
In the Address Book I select Reagan, G Bush, Clinton, Bush II and Obama and go under File and select New Group and name it Enemies of the State.Â
I open Mail and create a new message. into the To: field I type Enemies of the State and hit Tab or Enter.Â
What shows up in my To: field is Reagan. No one else.Â
I go back and check the address book and there is certainly a group there. I click on Enemies of the State and it lists all the members of the group. Â

how to make finder NOT to show files from a specific folder in "All My Files"? See the attach - I recently installed Civilization 5 from Steam and now I have a lot of unneeded files (*.log and *.ini) shown in All My Files colder in Finder.Â
when i click on an album in Grid view, the track names don't show up, and the "name" option doesn't appear in the column browser when you're choosing what to see.
I am trying to edit my login items as apparently from what I have been told that is the only way to get my Belkin n52te speed pad to work with OS X Mavericks, however when I click on Users&Groups in System Preferences I just keep getting "Preferences error: Could not load Users and Groups preference pane" I have tried rebooting, I have tried going into terminal and showing hidden files to see if there is a corrupted duplicate of the system preferences file.
None of the fixes I have found by Googling the issue to find posts about it have worked. As I said in the beginning I have a belkin n52te speed pad that I cannot change the keybindings for because Mavericks will not recognize the device as being plugged in. When I run the keybind editor program and from what I was able to find about that issue online it has to do with editing the login items to include a file from the installer and then rebooting and trying again. I could just hook into my windows PC since that actually works but its difficult to have to unplug the pad and hook it into my windows PC anytime I need to make any changes to the keymaps, so getting my mac to work.
Is there a way to make song names in iTunes display larger like they did in Front Row, so if you are across the room you can pick songs with a remote easier?Â
I made a new account because it wouldn't let me log in on my old account and now it seems as if it's working but it won't send or receive ANY messages. This application used to work so I don't understand.
Trying to set up calendar in Mavericks 10.9.3. The defaults are Blue = Home, Green = Work, Purple = Holidays and Grey = Birthdays.. until you uncheck some and they disappear.Â
all up and adding them ourselves. But when adding my own groups, I'd like them in different colors to make them stand out. However, they're all showing up as grey. I can't seem to find anywhere where I can set up my own colors.  I wish Apple weren't getting so controlling. I know many of you want everything to synch up but........not everyone uses the calendar for work or even wants to sync it with anything else. Â
The Calendar app used to be simple and easy and you could set it up however you wanted. Doesn't appear so now and very group the same grey color, isn't very useful! I'd get rid of "Home" too but it's the only thing that isn't grey besides Holidays-- since I eliminated "Work".  I don't know what "Home" is. Since "Holiday" is purple, I want "Medical Appts." in Red. I want other things in other colors.Â
I was working on a iMac running Snow Leopard, trying to change the home folder of the previous owner, call her Kathy, to the new owner, Barb, because Barb needs access to all of Kathy's folders, email, etc.Â
Right now all I have in Users is Admin. Barb's account is appearing in Groups, not Users. And I'm not sure if all of Kathy's data is in Barb's account.Â
At one point I added a new account to my print sharing. I later turned printer sharing off for that account. But here's what's strange: If I go into Sharing > Printer Sharing, and click the "+" to add a user, that account still shows up as eligible to add. However - that user account does NOT show up anywhere under "Users & Groups" in the general Systems Preferences pane. So, essentially, I have a User Account that can share resources, but I can't remove it. How to remove a user account from sharing eligibility when it's NOT showing up in "Users & Groups"?Â
Some of the emails I receive from friends show a placeholder for an image. The placeholder has the filename (example.jpg) in the top left hand corner. In the centre of the placeholder is a tiny blue square with a question mark. Is there a way to display the pics in the email along with the text. Funny stories are not quite the same without the pics! I can preview & download the images with no problem. So it looks like the images are there, its just that mail doesn't want to display them sometimes?
I have just installed a new 128 SSD into my MacBook Pro instead of SuperDrive and kept also the old HDD inside. I made a clean install of Lion on the SSD which created a new Pictures folder on the SSD, but I want to have it linked to the old HDD. Is there any way how to change destination of these default folders? (I have tried to create symbolic link and put it instead of the Pictures folder, but Lion does not let me delete the Pictures folder...)Â

As of three days ago, pictures arriving in MacMail have not been showing up. Instead, there are small blue boxes with a question mark inside. Does anyone know what happened or what I did to cause this or what I can do to get the pictures to show up?
I open iphoto and its blank. I go to my HD and I see the pictures in my iphoto folder. Also the side part on iphoto won't show, the option to look at events and past 12 months and so on...How do I fix all of that?
IMAGINE I have 2 hard disk partitions on the SAME hard disk, one is called 'Macintosh HD' and the other is called 'My Data'.
The Plan: In the 'Macintosh HD', there are (1) system files & (2) users' settings. In the 'My Data', there are all the music, pictures, etc.
For example, the 'Macintosh HD' has 40GB and the 'My Data' has 120GB. All I want to do is to separate the SYSTEM and my DATA without migrating my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' which contains folders called 'Music', 'Pictures'... to the partition 'My Data'.
I want to separate the system files and my data incase I need to reinstall the Mac OS X while leaving all my data untouched.
So the way I should do (I guess) is to leave my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' empty, and create files called, for example, 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition. Then redirect the files 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' to 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
In Windows XP or Windows 7, you can redirect those as using the methods below: (1)[URL] But I just don't know how to do that in Mac OS X, it seems that Mac OS X doesn't even provide a way for users to do so: [URL]
I saw a reply in macrumors forum and tried to move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders, but it turned out that those files were being copied, not moved. So I can't move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. to the partition 'My Data' and make aliases of them which can be put in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'.
So, are there only 3 options for me too choose? (1) stop trying to fight Apple and Mac OS X on where it puts things, just put all the things in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD', using only 1 partition (2) move my home folder to the other disk partition, in this case, the partition 'My Data' (3) can't redirect the location of Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders in my home folder in the 'Macintosh HD', but just simply put things in the 'My Data'.
