Mac Pro :: Start Up Disk Not Found Automatically?
Feb 10, 2010My system drive recently failed and so I installed on a another drive in my mac pro. I've taken the other (failed) drive out. My current system drive which works great so far when my computer is booted up and running, is not found automatically during start up. For example, if I restart the computer it will either show me a blank screen forever, sometimes a missing folder, sometimes nothing. But if I hold option during start up, sure enough the system drive will show up and I can go on my way with no problems.

May 24, 2012I went searching for lost disk space on my macbook air and by using OmniDiskSweeper found almost 13Gb in two directories that I had deleted a stack of emails from many months ago.
1. Why would the Apple mail app retain deleted emails
2. Is there any downside to using OmniDiskSweeper to remove them
3. How can I convince the mail app to not do that?

Now in my Java preferences I see both the Java SE available.Now my problem is when I enable Java 7(& select Enable applet plug-in and Web start applications), my JNLP file doesn't run with java web start, from Safari as well as Firefox. When I try running the jnlp using Open With option and selecting Java Web Start present in /System/Library/CoreServices, nothing happens.
When I try running the JNLP file from Terminal suing command /System/Library/CoreServices/Java Web Start.app/Contents/MacOS/Java Web Start xyz.jnlp I get following error
Java Web Start splash screen process exiting... Can not find message file : No such file or directory.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Start-up Disk Full?
May 16, 2012Okay, so my iMac has been slowing down recently and I have gotten the pop-up saying the start up disk is full. When I got this, I went through and deleted a lot of things and moved things onto my external hard-drive. I can't remember how much space it got me, but it only lasted a few days. The same pop-up came up and I was confused because I hadn't really downloaded anything or done anything to use that space. Okay, so I delete more stuff. This second time I deleted enough (my whole downloads folder I forgot about) to get 15GB of space back. That was just a few days ago. Today, I got the same pop-up and had only 1GB of space left. I haven't downloaded ANYTHING especially 14GB worth at least for me to run out of space again.

Sep 5, 2014I used the command System Preferences -> Startup Disk to select the partition that has the OS as the only partition to boot. Now, when I start up the machine with the option key pressed, it doesn't show the Recovery volume and it won't let me start with an external flash drive.

Jul 9, 2009How can I download/install OS 9 Disk drivers for an already formatted hard drive?I was not able to exercise the "include OS 9 drivers" in the Disk Utility formatting process on a LaCie Drive because I needed to have also a 32GB partition for Windows-FAT, and when I chose the Windows-FAT format option, the "Include OS 9 driver option" disappeared from Disk Utility Program. The consequence of this is: my OSX main partition is not visible by my other Mac running OS-9, while my MS-32GB is normal. The main partition was formatted with HFS+ but with no "include OS 9 disk drivers" possibility.

It was purchased brand new. I used it for one hour yesterday, run the set up, install updates. thats all I have done with it. Today I awake to it presenting a loading bar of some sort under the Apple logo and Spinning wheel. I researched the bar, and found that it was a progress bar for a disk check, and since it doesnt complete (I let it do its thing) something must be wrong, However when i run disk utility, it can find now error in the disk. but my sound and video play pack does not work unless i restart the machine. this seems like an unessecary process. what are the possible causes?

MacBook :: Repairing Disk With Another Installation Disk?
Jun 30, 2014My startup disk is almost full so I tried to repair disk in Disk Utility but only 'verify disk' was available, which led to the following error message: "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk." I have recently moved countries and cannot seem to find my installation disk anywhere (stupid, I know). Is there another option, such as using someone else's installation disk (since nothing is actually installed from the installation disk in this process, right?) or does it have to be my own installation disk? It is an old MacBook (2007), running OSX 10.6.3.

Apr 10, 2012My iMac does not start up as usual. I now get a ' start up disk is full. You need to make space available on your start up disk by deleting files' message. I am able to key my log on password however I just get the purple galaxy screen with no desktop.
If I try to use the keyboard I get a tone when pressing the keys.
Has worked perfectly well up until I got this dusk full message.
OS X :: Mac Not Start Up After Snow Leopard Installation
Feb 17, 2010I've installed Snow Leopard but now my mac won't start up. (It's a early 2008 mac pro so it should be able to handle it). All that happens is it loads past the apple logo, the rainbow wheel pops up, the background loads and the search icon (magnifying glass) appears but nothing else at all beyond that. It just waits for ages (a few times that note has appeared that say's I need to restart the computer).
I've tried.
1) Re installing it
2) Reinstalling it on a different partition (that had windows on before) but nothing seems to work.
I really need to keep all my data so I want to be careful.
OS X Server :: Start Installation From Scratch?
May 4, 2009I've just had OS X Server installed on my server and the numpty who set it up filled in my name wrong, completely the wrong surname. I know this seems like a minor issue but it's just another one of those things I'd like to be right. I can access my server through 'root' 'Local Administrator' and 'iainmorrison' but not one of them will allow me to change the details of 'iainmorrison' For the most part I will login via 'root' though I really would like the main account on the machine to be 'spadge' instead of 'iainmorrison'. I've also just checked through all the tabs of the Server Admin pane and it appears that 'Iain Morrison' also appears in the 'Registered to' box which I really want to change but again, can't, the changes simply revert as soon as I click Save or move to another tab. I know it's a little pedantic but when you have �700 of software on �2000 worth of server it's kinda nice for things to be right without stupid little mistakes like this. Is there any way I can fix this without having to get the guy who set it up to go back to the datacentre and start the installation from scratch?

Jul 11, 2010I have had my Mac Pro unplugged for about a week or so whilst I did some building work. Plugged it back in today, and it's not finding the hard disk in Bay 2. Bay 1 contains the factory supplied 300 GB drive. Bay 2 and 3 each contain a 1TB drive, which I had set up as a RAID. Disk Utility is finding the 1TB drive in Bay 3 (and is correctly telling me that it's a RAID slice), but not the one in Bay 2. I have checked the physical connection, and that appears to be fine.

Nov 2, 2009I just downloaded Windows 7 (64-bit) from my school's software hub and burned it to a bootable disc. I partitioned my drive, and was able to boot from the installation CD. Now, for some reason, my copy of Windows 7 must be different from EVERYBODY else's, because when I start, it asks for the language, and then I click begin install. Here's where the problem comes. I immediately get a dialogue box that says I am missing a required device driver in order to continue the installation. Please insert the CD, USB, etc. with the required drivers. (Of course, it doesn't tell me what they are.) Now, here is where I would put in my Snow Leopard disk, if it weren't for the fact that the disk refuses to eject. So, I can't even begin the installation at all. Is there somewhere I can go on the disk to find these drivers and put them on a USB flash drive? Or any other work around for this?

Apr 9, 2010I have a Mac Mini and I am running Snow Leopard and BootCamp 3.0. I am trying to install Windows XP. I'm using BootCamp to partition the disk. I've tried with different sizes, the outcome was the same. After partitioning I can see the Bootcamp volume in Finder and on the desktop. Bootcamp then tells that I can start the installation. The Windows XP CD is in the drive. Restart follows. And then nothing but the gray screen. No installation starts. I have to shut down the computer and start it again.
This time I hold the option key and there is only the Mac OS volume! There is no sign from the BootCamp volume. After starting the computer again it doesn't boot from the Mac OS volume, there is the gray screen only, which means that the startup disk have been changed and that usually happens when you install windows with bootcamp - it changes the startup volume from Mac OS to the BootCamp volume, but still the BootCamp volume is not there. I've installed Windows XP with BootCamp several times. I know how it works. Installation starts automatically after the restart.

Jul 6, 2010I am currently on a macbook that I bought in the summer of 2008, and I just decided I wanted to be able to run Windows on my laptop. I found my WindowsXP installation disk, a factory disk, and opened up boot camp to install Windows. I was following instructions from another thread on another computer I have at home. I got through partitioning my disk and got the windowsXP installation ready to begin when I realized I couldn't find my MacOSX disk, and thus wouldn't be able to install the Windows drivers after installing Windows (I was running Mac OS X 10.5.8), so I stopped the installation there and un-partitioned my harddrive. I then ordered Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3, and I just received the CD today. I installed Snow Leopard, then did the same thing that I did before with boot camp and partitioned my drive. However, this time when I got to the part where I put in my Windows disk, the computer reboots and starts, but the Windows installation won't begin. It just sits at a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I've tried giving it over 30 minutes to start but it just won't go. Logically I would assume there's a problem with the disk, but I used this same disk less than a week ago and got halfway through the installation without any problems. Why won't my WindowsXP installer disk boot up?

Mar 30, 2012One day I inserted a CD in my Mac, nothing popped up. So I went into my mac hardware list and clicked on "Disk Burning". I get the following message. "No disk burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it's connected and turned on." I currently am using a mid-2007 Macbook Pro installed with OS X 10.6.8, It is an Intel Core Duo. I have run Disk Utility and it told me to insert the installation disk and run Disk Utility from there.
I have tried rebooting the computer while holding C and nothing happened. I think the computer can not see the CD Drive so therefore, it will not load the disk. Also, I have considered doing a complete wipe of the hard drive and reinstalling but I have programs (Adobe, Parallels, etc,) that I do not have the disks for. If I was forced to do a full re-install, how could I save these programs from being wiped out and then re-install them cleanly back?
