OS X V10.7 Lion :: Brand New IMac Runs A Disk Check On Start Up?
Feb 16, 2012
I've owned this iMac for less then 20 hours
Mac OSX 10.7.3
21.5"
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ram
"Mid 2011"
It was purchased brand new. I used it for one hour yesterday, run the set up, install updates. thats all I have done with it. Today I awake to it presenting a loading bar of some sort under the Apple logo and Spinning wheel. I researched the bar, and found that it was a progress bar for a disk check, and since it doesnt complete (I let it do its thing) something must be wrong, However when i run disk utility, it can find now error in the disk. but my sound and video play pack does not work unless i restart the machine. this seems like an unessecary process. what are the possible causes?

I recently upgraded the RAM on my iMac PowerPC, but after installing the new modules, nothing would come up when I boot it. It gives me 2 (or three) of the "dial tone" beeps, the light flashes on and off and the only thing running would be the fan, running at an ultra high speed.I did install the correct modules, which are 2 x 1gb 184 pin DDR PC3200 400mhz ones, but I realize that they are high density ones. Dumb question here, but would that be the problem?

I bought a new iMac back in October and used a Time Machine backup from my 2008 Mac Book Pro to get all of my files transferred over. The other day i went into my About This Mac section on my iMac and noticed (i think) im running in 32 bit mode on my iMac. Im not sure if its because my MBP was running in 32 bit mode or not. Im pretty sure my iMac is capable and equipped to run 64 bit. How do i get my iMac running in 64 bit, and if i do, will it cause any compatiability issues with my programs (Adobe Creative Suite, Paralells, etc.)?

Our iMac is 18 months old and three times in the last few months the fan has switched on at full speed as soon as I press the power button. If I disconnect the computer from the power source and turn it upside down before reconnecting and starting it up, the fan will then work normally. Has anyone else had this problem? I guess the answer is to take it to a service centre, but I thought I would see if there is a simple resolution to the problem first.

My IMac is about 1 year old. It is a 20 inch 2.4 intel iMac. It froze today the mouse wouldn't move or anything. My kids were messing around with it. So I just turned it off and back on. After a couple of minutes of gray screen a folder with a question mark flashes over and over again. So I got on my macbook to see what it meant, I found out that the iMac couldn't find its start up disk. So I went to apple support trouble shooting and it said start it up using the install disc which I did. It said go to start up utility and repair the disc. The start up disc doesn't show up, so they said if that happens reset the PRAM, which I did like 3 times, and nothing. They said if all these steps fail just reinstall using the installation disc. Which I did but when it said where would you like to install Mac OS X, you would normally see the Hard Drive Icon and it is gone, there is nothing there.

I am having boot up problems on my imac 27-inch. I pressed the power button and press and held the Option key, I chose the Recovery disk, but the Recovery disk did not start, instead I have the grey Apple logo and it keeps running but will not start.
The imac 27-inch was bought refurbished in late 2010. I also have imac apple care from 2010 never used. First time problem. On pressing the Option key during startup, Mach Hard disk and Recovery Disk 10.9 is displayed.
Choosing mac hard disk does not boot up the OS instead I get a big Zero sign with line through it or a big flash question mark sign. Choosing the Recovery Disk 10.9 does not boot up Disk Utility, instead I get the grey Apple logo.

I have a MacBook Pro running Mavericks.
Recently I noticed that if I run Check Disk in Disk Utility, all the process works correctly but at the end it doesn't tell me that everything is correct (in green).
On the contrary, if I run it in recovery mode, (reboot w cmd-r), it works correctly to the end with the correct green result at the end.

Okay, so my iMac has been slowing down recently and I have gotten the pop-up saying the start up disk is full. When I got this, I went through and deleted a lot of things and moved things onto my external hard-drive. I can't remember how much space it got me, but it only lasted a few days. The same pop-up came up and I was confused because I hadn't really downloaded anything or done anything to use that space. Okay, so I delete more stuff. This second time I deleted enough (my whole downloads folder I forgot about) to get 15GB of space back. That was just a few days ago. Today, I got the same pop-up and had only 1GB of space left. I haven't downloaded ANYTHING especially 14GB worth at least for me to run out of space again.

I used the command System Preferences -> Startup Disk to select the partition that has the OS as the only partition to boot. Now, when I start up the machine with the option key pressed, it doesn't show the Recovery volume and it won't let me start with an external flash drive.

I keep getting a pop up saying my start up disk is almost full, or that my iTunes library couldn't be saved, but I've still got a quarter of hard drive available on my new iMac. OmniDiskSweeper shows that most of the memory goes to my iTunes Media and Pictures/videos, but that shows just 61GB of hard drive used for Users. What could be using my hard drive space that doesn't show in OmniDiskSweeper?

why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk? I have the 10.7.4 on both. The MBP came with it so I installed it onto the hard drive i have been using the same way with an older macbook pro but the new MBP does not see the startup disk. So i installed the same version of the os onto the MBP by hooking it up to my imac as a target disk because it would not recognize the install usb stick. Now the brand new MBP doesnt start up

I got an OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD and it runs fine and it's fast when using the computer. But the boot up time is so ridicules slow, slower then my old 500GB 7200RPM drive. My boot up time is around 37 sec with the SSD. The Apple logo came's up and the spinning wheel spinning forever!.
I think I know what the problem is, it's searching for like 25 sec for the first boot drive, and it can't find my SSD. Other people I know here on Macrumors just checked the SSD in the "Start up" in System Preferences and reboot, then they getting fast boot time. When I check my SSD and press reboot, it's still slow and when I later check the Start Up disk, none disk is selected (neither the SSD or "Network startup"...
Here is how it always look like when going in to System Preferences -> Startup Disk after a reboot, none is selected... (sorry for the Swedish language, I hope you will understand)
What should I do to fix this problem? (I've tried to reset NVRAM, PRAM and SMC, but with no luck).

My 2011 27 inch iMac which was purchased in February 2012 is not turning on. I have never had a problem with it until now. I was working on Bootcamp and when I restarted the computer, it froze at the login screen so I force restarted the computer by pressing the power button down for 10 seconds. When I restarted the computer it did not want to turn back on. The only thing that happens when I restart much computer is I hear something that normally sounds since I purchased the computer which is either the hard drive or the DVD drive but no white screen comes up. I have tried to pull the power plug for 15 seconds and then plug it back into the back of the computer and wait five seconds before turning it on and I have also tried restarting the computer while pressing command option P and R. I removed the memory sticks and put them back in properly get the computer still did not turn on. I have a 27 inch mid 2011 iMac running Mac OS X 10 7.4. It is a quad core I73.4 GHz with 16 GB of RAM 256 GB factory installed SSD +1 TB hard disk drive with the AMD 6970 and 2 GB graphics card. Sorry for the long post.!I wanted to be as descriptive as possible as I am really trying to avoid bringing it to the Apple Store because I need the computer because I go to school online and have finals this week.

My start up disk is my hard drive.
Whenever I take the hard drive out my laptop just stops working and it's back to normal when I put the hard drive in, is there a way for me to use my laptop without having to physically have my start up disk (hard drive) plugged into my laptop?

Just got an Intel iMac, with 1.5g ram (one 1g and a 512mb). I've been running CS2, and have been very disappointed. Previously, I was using a G4. I was expecting the program to run faster, even under Rosetta, but not only has it been slower, InDesign is acting buggy, with crashes, and corrupting files.
I'm going to get a second 1G stick of ram to see if it's a matched ram issue, but I'm interested if anyone else has had this problem.

I have been battling with fan speed on my iMac recently.
I installed iStat which shows normal temps, but the fan revs up to 4000rpm - for seemingly no reason at all. Sometimes its quiet for long periods. It sometimes helps for a while if I put the machine into Sleep mode, but then I hear the fan start to rev up again when I resume activity.
I have spent hours with tech support, who then upgraded me to a higher level of tech support. But still the problem continues.
