Jun 1, 2012I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.
I tried converting it in the terminal with:
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.
I tried the terminal command:
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

Nov 30, 2014I have been trying to download the new Yosemite update and kept getting an error message regarding the download. When I finally figured out what was going on, it appears that I don't have very much room on my hard drive to allow Yosemite to download. As you can see, the large problem is found in the movies and other categories.This brings me to my question.
1.) How can I clear up the 'other' clutter effectively, despite not knowing what falls into the 'other' category?
2.) Without having an external hard drive, is there a way to transfer movie purchases from iTunes to either USB drives or something simple to free up some more space? I don't want to outright delete anything, as I'm afraid that I'd lose the purchase, and therefore, the money spent. However, I'm not opposed to getting an inexpensive external hard drive.
I don't have a CD drive--just 2 USB ports and 1 for a memory card, so hopefully that won't inhibit storage options.

Apr 14, 2012My computer won't turn on. Earlier today while playin music it just paused itself. I minute later it resumed. Then tonight it just shut off instead of sleeping and now it won't start. All I can get if I'm lucky is the start up chime and a super quick flash of a white screen.

I have tried / boot from DVD, then go to Disk Utility, file/ create new image from disk but the process stops imediatlly with a. cant unmount drive, b. drive is busy, c. in use how the drive is in use is not sensable, as it should be as 'just a drive' This is on a laptop with OSX 10.5.8 / 32gig hd, 2 gig ram, just in case it matters. Apr 28, 2010I have a Lacie 1TB external drive. I'm trying to create another partition on it using Disk Utility so that I can use one of the partitions for Time Machine. When I go to add another partition, or even just resize the existing one, I get an error saying drive must be HPFS+ with Journaling enabled. It is. I've seen reference to this error in searches, but have not found a solution. Is there a fix for this, or another tool that I can use to re-partition my drive without wiping out existing partition? I have about 450GB worth of data on the drive that I might be able to store somewhere else temporarily, I would just prefer not to have to go through that....

May 17, 2012I have university work I need to complete tomorrow. Machine is a 13" MacBook Pro with Bootcamp and windows 7 installed but the problem is on the Mac partition sequence of events:-I was using MS Word for Mac when it crashed as being unable to write to the disk.I went to utilities and ran a verify permissions - failures were found - one marked as not repairable I ran repair permissions - it repaired all but one I ran verify disk - it said it there was an error which could not be repaired - reformat the drive a restore from backup I have full time machine backup so thought no problem I shut down the machine and restarted using Cmd R and went to disk utilities - no "format disk" option.Browse on internet finds I have to delete the "Macintosh HD" partition - re- create it and restore - ok Find I cannot delete the partition because it cannot unmount the drive - because I have booted from the recovery partition which is on that drive - catch 22 Try to boot from original Snow Leopard disk - LION wont let you do it Read some more on Internet and find I can boot from the Lion Revovery HD on a USB Only way of getting it is to download it or create it using the machine I want to recover - but that machine won't boot in OS X ?...Tried the Lion Internet install but it simply fails with an " error occurred please try again.how I can get a recovery USB written in order to externally boot my Mac and recover it ?

Jul 5, 2012I have a Mac Mini that I plan to use as a simple file server with a 2TB external disk. I would like to be able to add future external disks to grow the original 2TB volume I create to 4TB, 6TB, etc. using RAID.
I know it is possible to add disks to a concatenated RAID set without destroying the data on the disks already in the set, but I cannot get Disk Utility to let me create a single-disk concatenated RAID set.

Mar 10, 2012So my Mac froze for some reason, while my Kingston thumb/flash drive was in. I tried to eject it, but I could only force eject (which it said may cause issues). After that, whenever I put the thumb drive in, it said something like the drive won't work and I had to copy the files to my desktop. When I go into disk utility and click repair disk, it says this: "Disk Utility stopped repairing “UNTITLED 1”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." I can't erase the thumbdrive, because it says I need a source, which I don't know what that means.The files are useless now as I have transferred them to a CD, so I'm fine with erasing the whole thing.

May 16, 2012Okay, so my iMac has been slowing down recently and I have gotten the pop-up saying the start up disk is full. When I got this, I went through and deleted a lot of things and moved things onto my external hard-drive. I can't remember how much space it got me, but it only lasted a few days. The same pop-up came up and I was confused because I hadn't really downloaded anything or done anything to use that space. Okay, so I delete more stuff. This second time I deleted enough (my whole downloads folder I forgot about) to get 15GB of space back. That was just a few days ago. Today, I got the same pop-up and had only 1GB of space left. I haven't downloaded ANYTHING especially 14GB worth at least for me to run out of space again.
