Just got an Intel iMac, with 1.5g ram (one 1g and a 512mb). I've been running CS2, and have been very disappointed. Previously, I was using a G4. I was expecting the program to run faster, even under Rosetta, but not only has it been slower, InDesign is acting buggy, with crashes, and corrupting files.
I'm going to get a second 1G stick of ram to see if it's a matched ram issue, but I'm interested if anyone else has had this problem.
my new white macbook runs slower on battery that when it is plugged in. The most noticeable thing is that the applications folder loads slower and is laggy to scroll in.
Unchecking put harddrive to sleep when possible did not fix the problem.
Any ideas or is it supposed to run slower to save battery?
Firefox hangs pages, won't load pages ect. It does not do this all the time, but a fair amount of it. I do not have the same problem with Safari, so I am suspicious as to whether other browsers are less eefficient on my Mac by design so that I use Safari exclusively

I heard someone talking about this "Safe Mode" and I thought it was an interesting feature in MacBooks and all I have to do was press Shift. I tried that and to my surprise, everything is slower. I tried to swith spaces and the wallpaper renders pixel per pixel on my screen. This never happened before. It's so slow! It has never been this slow before. I was curious if everything was really slower or it's just me so I fired up Geekbench. The results were staggering. 1280 points. A Power Mac G5 is faster than that. Even the Mac mini from 2007 is faster than that! This MacBook SHOULD be 3695! This is really amazing in a bad way. And other than that, I didn't really notice any difference at all from Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

I've been using a LaCie Quadra 2TB Hard drive for a little over a month now.
I've been noticing in that time that whenever I have the HD mounted my system seems to run slower in that it has lots of sporadic hang ups. I get the spinning beachball in all sorts of programs from Safari to Microsoft Word.
I am of course assuming the Hard drive is to blame, so I was wondering:
Can running an external hard drive (for use with Time Machine and general storage) slow a system down (in particular applications)?
The hard drive is a 7200rpm drive and its connected via firewire 800 if that is of any importance.

The iMac is screaming fast except for the Firefox app, the longer I run it the slower my internet is. I have tried disabling the plug-ins as well going to Preferences=>Privacy and setting "Remember my browsing history for at least" to 5 days.
This hasn't really helped. I have confirmed that the DSL is running properly, even had a AT&T tech out to confirm it.
Everything on my mac is running slower and slower, I have the last ver. of the eMac, and still running the 256 Ram, and 12 GB of storage with an external of 250 GB. I dont know why, if you need a list of apps or anything just ask. I also dont have the 100 I need right now to upgrade the ram. Plus if anyone could tell me if and how I can use my external as my main drive, but it is a usb, that sometimes hikups being on my mac for access, it will access it sometimes 5 min after I boot, so I may not want to, or is it a glitch of my mac.

But the same thing occurred after i disconnected it. After repairing permissions and restarting, pmram etc.Is the 9400 causing the slowdown? I know its fairly old but itunes visualizer and safari should be quite basic tasks. Its not the end of the world i know but does the 27" imac have similar issues as i plan to upgrade my machine in 2011.
Got my new iMac 27" i7 2.93 for three weeks ago. Everything was kind of fine but now everytime i boot it starts to write to the disk, and since you really can hear when the machine writes to the disk, it's obvious when it does it. The disk is a WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0
- I turned of spotlight indexing, rebooted, 30 minutes later it was still writing like there was no tomorrow.
- Checked Console.app, just Google Chrome trowing messages (which is running slower then on my old MBP Santa Rosa 5400 rpm).
- Ran disk utilty repair permissions, still no luck.
- Used Lingon to get rid of **** at startup, still no luck.
- No disk encryption.
The bottom line: The machine runs slower, boots applications slower and functions slower then my old MBP 2.4 ghz Santa Rosa 2007 with a 5400 rpm hdd. I tried to run a blu ray mkv from the internal disk, stuttered as hell and didn't work despite VLC being the only open application. Then i ran it from an external 5400 rpm Firewire drive and it worked flawlessy. What is up with this? Shall i reinstall and empty my disk?
Is there any software for checking what applications is currently writing to the HDD?

Thought the house power had gone off because when I returned home, my Mac was off. Rebooted checked email, and went to get breakfast. Came back fan running very fast, and machine is locked and no video. Turned off by holding in power button. Same thing happens when I left again. I have now been on the machine for over an hour and no problems. What is causing this?

I have been having some problems with my MacBook Pro going slower and slower and then eventually grinds to a halt. I'm not sure what is causing it....Is there a log that will show me any memory leaks or at least what was using up the most memory/CPU at the time it freezes? a lot of times it freezes awhile after the screensaver kicks in.

Lately, it stopped booting up again and they told me to use [URL] to take the mobo out and ship it to Arizona to have the solder refloated. I did and got it back, put it together and it would boot up, only to run for 15 minutes and shut down. Thinking I missed something, I dissasembled it today and reassembled it. Now it turns on with a blank screen, the fan runs on high, and it will go no further. I tried to reset the power manager, reset the p-ram, the hard drive is only a few months old and my brain is getting fried with frustration.

My late 2011 iMac started slowing down about 3 months ago. My hard drive then got corrupt and I restored to mac osx lion anew. It sped up a bit but still slow. Last month my iMac started doing the same thing so instead of restoreing I moves all of my files to an external hard drive. Now I rerestored once again but it didn't help. A prime example of the speed decrease is the game minecraft. Half a year ago I could run a server and run on the good graphics smoothly. Now I can even look around with only minecraft. It took me 30 min to turn on. I had to do this on my iPad because I mac couldnt make it here.

Since upgrading to Mavericks my Mac has been running pretty slow. I run Logic Pro 9 and Ableton 8 music programs on my computer quite often and that's where i notice significant lag. I understand those are heavy programs, but even when Safari is open and I try to open Finder there is lag time before the window actually opens. When I restart my computer, it runs a little better, but as soon as I begin to open other programs, the lag begins and will continue even after I close them.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard and never had any issues- it ran extremely smooth under the most stressful conditions with all the current memory and hard drive space, cpu, etc. I

I have been battling with fan speed on my iMac recently.
I installed iStat which shows normal temps, but the fan revs up to 4000rpm - for seemingly no reason at all. Sometimes its quiet for long periods. It sometimes helps for a while if I put the machine into Sleep mode, but then I hear the fan start to rev up again when I resume activity.
I have spent hours with tech support, who then upgraded me to a higher level of tech support. But still the problem continues.
I recently upgraded the RAM on my iMac PowerPC, but after installing the new modules, nothing would come up when I boot it. It gives me 2 (or three) of the "dial tone" beeps, the light flashes on and off and the only thing running would be the fan, running at an ultra high speed.I did install the correct modules, which are 2 x 1gb 184 pin DDR PC3200 400mhz ones, but I realize that they are high density ones. Dumb question here, but would that be the problem?

I don't remember the start up time taking almost a minute to cycle from the blank gray screen to gray screen with the Apple on it. Tuesday and yesterday it started up much faster (at least 30 seconds). ere's my some of the hard drive info:

The only thing I've done since Tuesday is add two songs in iTunes to test the cd-rom drive. I just ran the extended Apple Hardware Test and everything is fine. Given that my 20" refurb died within 3 months and I returned 2 iMacs prior that one, I'm a little nervous. Is this normal for a Western Digital hard drive to take nearly a minute start up from gray screen to grey screen with the apple?
I partitioned my HD and ran a boot from that disk. When I go and run a geekbench score I am getting 2400+ range as opposed to my 5800+ range I get on my normal boot up section?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter owning my Imac for about 12 months or more now I've noticed lately that it has become much much slower. I expected it to slow down just like all computers once you have used up a fair bit of memory space but I haven't used up much at all. I've tried to avoid using up too much space on my Mac by using an external storage drive but I'm wondering if that has the opposite effect? I've got the usual apps that help the Mac to run efficiently and I've followed various threads that show how to optimize the mac so I'm assuming there isn't all that much tweaking left to do... could be wrong though. A long time ago (i'm not sure what got into me) but I downloaded the apple developer software, I don't intend on using it but i don't what the correct names of the apps are and I don't want to uninstall the wrong stuff. I have tested the speed of my Mac with and without the external memory drive but didn't find much difference, but perhaps my tests weren't entirely accurate.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy iMac runs perfectly fine; more or less as it did when it was new. In OS X, when I shut down the computer, the fan runs at full speed indefinitely, unless I unplug it or boot back up. When running, the fan is perfectly normal (increases speed a bit when doing something taxing). I've never heard it at full speed before until this started happening. After following the SMC reset procedure with no luck (I'd like to add that the SMC reset only says it relates to fan problems when the computer is ON), I searched a bit and noticed there are one or two cases where a problem like mine was believed to be a motherboard issue, and therefore a costly fix.
However, here's the fun part. When booted into Windows 8.1, shutting down the iMac does not cause this issue to occur. It stays silent, as it should, even if I disconnect then reconnect the power. This leads me to believe it's unlikely to be a motherboard issue. However I've wiped, restored, and reinstalled fresh copies of Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Windows 8.1, and the result is still the same: if I don't want to have to unplug it from the wall, then I have to use Windows to shut it down.
So then, my questions are these:
-What is the difference between shutting down from OS X and shutting down from Windows?
-Is an operating system allowed/able to touch BIOS settings?
-Is it possible to still be a hardware problem, given this difference?
My default OS is OS X, and it makes no difference if I change that to Windows. I also did a PRAM reset, even though that has nothing to do with fans...

I purchased a Refurb 17" iMac 1.83Ghz Core 2. It would have been the Education Model for what I gather. No Bluetooth, Combo Drive, no 802.11n wifi, and Intel GMA950 graphics. Apple Specs state max RAM = 2Gb (2x1Gb). Has anyone been successful with trying 4Gb (2x2Gb)? I ask because we also have a Black MacBook (MA701LL/A) and Apple Specs state max RAM is also 2Gb, and we have had 4Gb in it, and runs beautifully!

It was purchased brand new. I used it for one hour yesterday, run the set up, install updates. thats all I have done with it. Today I awake to it presenting a loading bar of some sort under the Apple logo and Spinning wheel. I researched the bar, and found that it was a progress bar for a disk check, and since it doesnt complete (I let it do its thing) something must be wrong, However when i run disk utility, it can find now error in the disk. but my sound and video play pack does not work unless i restart the machine. this seems like an unessecary process. what are the possible causes?

currently i have a blackbook and imac core duo, 17 ". My macbook beats the imac in everything except graphics. Before i got my imac i seriously considered a g5 dual 2.0, but the money wasnt there. I see an apple refurb dual 2.0 for 1599, and im sure i cud get one a lot cheaper used here or on another board. How much of a performance increase will i see IN APERTURE going to the PM, if any? i would need a good increase to justify it, and eve then im not sure my parents would be ok with me spending a few hundred bucks to upgrade

The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.
