OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Alter Login Screen Pictures

Apr 13, 2012

I recently found out you can create custom login screen pictures and remove the apple logo and so on. A part I also loved was the login message. How to alter it so it could be made larger, text change and have new line capabilities (rather than having to space bar of to the end?)

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Stop Applications From Opening When Login?

Mar 9, 2012

Every time I log in to my account, all of the applications I previously had open start up automatically.  This takes a long time and there is a reason I closed the applications when I logged out.  Is there a way to stop this from happening? Also, every time I open up Quicktime, it also opens the past video's I had opened. This is also really annoying.

Software :: Opening Files In The Desktop Via Open With Option?

Jun 13, 2010

I want to add a file to the Desktop, and I want to open it with a specific text editor (emacs) whenever I click on it. So far, I made that file, copied it into the Desktop directory, and I tried to set the application which opens it via a right-click "Open-with" menu item. But when I try to select executable for that file (again, emacs), that application is greyed out and I can't set that application to open it.

So, how can I do it. When I click on the file, I want a window to be opened with emacs running and editing that file.

Apr 2, 2012

I have multiple screens on my Mac Pro. A normal screen, a projector and a USB-to-DVI converter. When I log in the login screen appears on either the projector or the converter screens. Not on the normal screen. I need to drag the cables out for the login to enter on the normal screen. The normal screen is set to the primary screen so thats not the problem.

ITunes :: Keeps Syncing Apps Even When Option Turned Off

Mar 23, 2012

So yesterday, after a good experience with iCloud backup and sync I decided to delete all my apps from iTunes library. I saved nearly 50GB (!). I decided to not sync apps from my iPad and iPhone to iTunes, so I unmarked that option on every device when connected to itunes. I only want to keep syncing TV Shows, Movies, Books and Photos from Aperture library. The problem is that every time I sync my device with iTunes, iTunes starts downloading apps from my iDevices (but not all of them). I've also turned off automatic downloading in iTunes/Preferences/Store, tried to sync via cable, wifi.

OS X :: Apps Bouncing In Dock And Not Opening.

Sep 7, 2009

I have a problem with my MacBook with applications 'bouncing' in the dock and not opening. I took the macbook into the genius store and they said it wasn't a permissions issue they thought it was some 3rd party programme I have loaded.

I have loaded Snow Leopard onto both my iMac and Macbook, the same apps work fine on the iMac but on my MacBook i am having to reinstall nearly all my apps to get them to work. The problem started a few weeks ago with leopard and I was hoping that with Snow Leopard it would sort it but as I used Time Machine to import all my data after upgrading I seem to have brought the problem into Snow Leopard.

The only thing I have done around the time this started happening that I can think of is that I downloaded one of those programmes that help free up space on the mac by deleting all unnecessary languages (I just need British English) . could taking languages off interfere with so many apps?

Mac Pro :: Opening Apps Takes 30 To 45 Seconds?

Mar 21, 2012

Up graded to Lion last week. Everything fine until today. Opening apps takes 30 to 45 secs. Clicking anything on menu bar takes the same time. Everything is so slow I can't hardly use the machine. This happened to me about 10 days ago when I was running 10.6.8 which is why I formatted a new boot disc & installed Lion. Now it's happening again after a week of using Lion. Can I supply any logs to help an expert diagnose my problem & if so which ones? Meanwhile I will try safe boot & another account & report back.

Software :: Changing Default Login Shell For Root User

Jul 17, 2009

I'm running the latest version of Leopard, and I would like to change the default login shell for the "root" user, but the command which works under Unix and Linux doesn't seem to work here. As root, I have done a vipw to change the shell to /bin/zsh (my preference) on the root line. This change persists in /etc/passwd, and it also gets properly propagated to /etc/master.passwd.

However, every time do an su or a sudo -s, I still get sent into the old /bin/sh shell. I have completely restarted the system, and this still occurs (the /bin/zsh entry is still there for root in /etc/passwd and /etc/master.passwd after reboot). /bin/zsh properly appears in /etc/shells, so I know that this is not the problem.

OS X :: 10.5.7 - Machine Slow To Restart And Apps Not Opening

Aug 10, 2010

I am having a bit of an issue with my 13 MBP. With absolutely no rhyme or reason as to frequency, I have been having issues where all of a sudden:
I can't create folders on the desktop (Error code -50)
iTunes won't open (error code 13014)
Spotlight won't search (returns dictionary definitions)
Firefox won't open (A copy is already running...)
Thunderbird won't open (A copy is already running...)
and probably other problems I can't recall right off.

The machine is slow to restart when I do; one time I couldn't get past the gray screen for an hour. Once it gets through a restart however everything is fine for some amount of time before the problem happens again. I have received two kernel panics in the past week. Both came off the back of waking the laptop from sleep. As far as I can tell (or remember), I haven't installed anything that would cause the system to go nuts. I have TM backups, would prefer to use one of those versus a complete wipe as I have Parallels installed and don't want to have to redo that, plus Windows, plus all my Windows programs, etc. I do have a lost+found and Damaged Files folders in my Macintosh HD directory. Not sure where they came from, can't really determine by looking. More info, when I try to save something from online, it says there is not enough disk space. Also, it appears as though dmg's will not mount.
