Newly installed osx lion 10.7.4the guest user on the login screen disappeared after fresh installation of osx, and an option "Disable restarting to Safari when screen is locked" on "security & privacy" on preferences panel disappeared as well, its so strange!

I disable the guest user from panel of preferences users and groups but in the login screen but in the login screen still remains. Why?

When I turn on my computer, it shows that a guest could get onto the internet without a password. I don't want this to happen. I tried disabling the guest account from the settings but it still shows up.

I just noticed that on my login screen, "Guest" appears even though it is disabled. I have not tried to run it, but when I do click on it I get the message that the computer will reboot into the "Guest" mode. I stopped at that point. This can't be normal.

(Aug. 21, 2014)I just updated to OS-X Maverick 10.9.4, and now I get a guest user option at login. I never saw this before and didn't change any settings.

On sunday my dad and I bought the brand new 24" iMac, it is a great machine. However today when I went to login, all of the user accounts had disappeared and was replaced with "other...". When you click on it, it will ask you to type in your username and password but no matter what you type it will never let me on. I heard you can do this using terminal a while back, by hiding user accounts. However nobody here has done this, and as everybody else's account does not work it, so it raises some suspicions. My mom immediately thought we had been hacked, which I refuse to believe but it still is possible. We were using the beta of Safari and my sister had been using google images to find wallpapers. I downloaded Quicksilver, Adium, and Amua. That is it. We booted into single user mode and all accounts are there.
View 12 Replies View RelatedOk so today my 27" iMac (10.6.2) was acting kind of weird. In safari and chrome webpages would spontaniously crash for no reason (on my macbook, the same webpages were fine). So, to try and fix this issue, I decided to restart my imac. After all the applications quit, I was left with a blank screen with my wallpaper. It stayed like this for several minutes, so I decided to just hold the power button to force the imac to turn off. When I turned it back on, my user name was not displayed in the login window. All there was for accounts was "other" and a network symbol. When I click other and entered my user name and password, it did not work. I am sure I was using the correct password and username. I also tried: username: root, but that also did not work. So i rebooted again and the same "other" still was there without my real account. So i booted into my Mac OS X install dvd and I repaired the disk and all the permissions (there were a lot of things to repair). I thought that this would solve the problem, but it did not.

View 2 Replies View RelatedA machine we have has 4-5 user accounts on it. The login screen GUI just has one user visible and I can't figure out how to log with my user ID and password. There aren't many places to click & I've tried pretty much every thing I can think of to log in as a different user. Am I missing anything obvious? Is there a chance that only certain accounts are enabled for logging in after a reboot?

Apple writes in its OS X Lion screen sharing description that: "You can remotely log in to a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login."
Unfortunately, this is not true in my case: When other users are using my 2011 iMac for webbrowsing or DVD watching and I log in on my own acount from my macbook pro, video will stop playing, the spinning wheel sometime appears. The system does not really crash, but wil respond very slowly and in fact is not useable until I as remote user stop my activities or log out. This is not how it should be, especially as the iMac's CPU, memory and network load are very low according to activity monitor's information.

I would like to be able to configure what applications start when it's logged on using the guest account. For normal accounts you would use the login items option in Users and Groups but this option is not available for the Guest user.
I saw this thread from 2010 - [URL] so downloaded the server admin tools for 10.7.2 but the guest account didn't appear in the user list so I presume this has been changed again since Snow Leopard.

I work for a company that has several Macs available for customers' use. These are basically demo-machines that they can play with, and at the end of each day, the machines are wiped and rebooted.
The way we do this is simple: the machines auto-login to the Guest account, which will wipe the account at the end of the day. Well, getting a few new Macs in this week, I simply copied over the entire Guest user account to the new machines to avoid reloading all the demo content, preferences, etc. And truthfully, the machines have been working great.
Except one thing. The computer keeps giving me that annoying message that says "Safari (or Finder, or System Preferences, or anything!) wants to use keychain 'login'". And asks for the login keychain password. Well here's the thing: the Guest accounts don't have passwords!
So I looked up a little bit on this topic, and did things like... Went to "Keychain List" in the Edit menu of Keychain Access, and deleted both the "login" and "system" keychains. No help. I went to Preferences in Keychain Access and said "Reset My Keychain". When doing this, however, it asks for the new password for the login keychain.
The problem with this is that I cannot leave the field blank! The Guest account doesn't have a password, so how am I supposed to not create a password?
Just bought mac-air last week. When I start it got freeze on first screen where i can see my username logo and "guest user" logo. and can't click on both options .
tried power on/off many times with no success .
i ve recently activated the default guest account in leopard. However even though when I check in the accounts.prefpane it says that it is on and its 'login only' and when I click on the account it says 'allow guests to login into this computer' and its on.
However when I boot up my machine and click on the guest icon, it wont let me in as it shakes the menu(login failed).
Just wondering if it's possible to get rid of a user on the login screen? I have a 'remote' account for other people to access my dropbox, but I never use it to login. Can I remove this user?

Then I tried open a new user account to see if it also has the same problem. Unfortunately it did have the same problem - froze after I logged in. I had done a harddisk check, there seemed to be no problem.

I want to stop using updated Mac OS X 10.5.8 (I think it happens in 10.7.4 too IIRC)'s Flurry screen saver and just let Mac OS X 10.5.8 blank/sleep its screen to save energy, not make Macs (Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, etc.) hot especially in the heat waves, and use less resources. I noticed making display (not the computer) sleep and then waking does not ask me to log in like a screen saver would do. Is there a way to do this for sleeping displays?

Just curious if there is a way to not allow the user to change the "Require password" option (Security Prefs/General) in Lion (10.7.3). If I make the user managed by the server I could disable the pane, but I'd rather than do that in this case. Any way to do it with a standalone machine? I want to force the Require password option and not allow the user to disable it.
