OS X V10.7 Lion :: Won't Wake For Incoming Network Access

Jun 2, 2012

After Lion upgrade I cannot get my  remote access program (Timbuktu) to show my desktop to remote users. The sleeping screen (not the hard drive) is set for "Wake for network access" and all other settings are checked and appropriate including an update to the newest Timbuktu 8.8.3. The screen wakes from keyboard or trackball activity but not for incoming access. Note: The remote user sees the frame for the desktop in Timbuktu but is shows a sleeping (dark) screen. The file and clipboard exchanges still work but the screen ignores the instruction to wake. Access worked perfectly with Timbuktu until three weeks ago. Then it just sleeps like a teenager on Saturday morning unless tapped on the shoulder by a parent. Call-ins don't get answered.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Java Accept Incoming Network Connections?

Mar 13, 2012

I have several home security cameras that utilize Java.I've had them for years. But just in the past day, I've begun noticing a lightning fast popup that comes flying by and leaves so fast I can't even read it. It happens when I first launch one of the cameras in either Safari or Firefox (likely would do the same in other browsers too. I finally had to use a screen recording app to be able to record when the pop up flies by.I then slowly scrolled and paused on the message. It is a standard security message that says, "Do you want the application "Java" to accept incoming network connections?"

There is an ALLOW and DENY button but there's no way the popup ever is on the screen long enough for you to even read it, let alone click on a selection.  I see lots of other posts about this around the discussion forum and I see how I could go into the Security preferences and perhaps allow network connections there, assuming I can figure out how to point to the correct piece of Java code (System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk???) But my bigger question is why now? I haven't done any updates in the recent past and I log onto to these cameras every day...  Granted this popup goes by fast but it is noticeable...  Had it been there a week ago I would have noticed it...  But no...  It just started today. Why? And why would any message that seeks a user choice automatically appear and then disappear within a fraction of a second?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Best Application For Remote Access (including Wake From Sleep)

Jun 28, 2012

I will soon be getting a new macbook pro ret (soon) and will leave my macbook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) in the office where I am situated in university. I am looking to ensure that I can leave one at office and one at home. Yet keep access to both, I have seen "logmein pro" and seems to look good except one problem. It says to wake from sleep you need a computer on network running logmein. This I cannot guarantee as it is a university network. It also says that it will need to be linked to the network through cable to wake from sleep.

I will also need to close the lid of the laptop (or leave it open and risk trashing it) and have a password/login lock incase someone decides they want to be naughty. Anyway, I need a program that i can use over wifi (not highest priority) that WILL wake my macs from sleep (highest priority) and WILL (essential) allow me to have full remote access to computers including drag and drop. I dont care about accessing from my mobile as have drop box.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Set Up A Local Wireless Network Without Access To Internet

May 18, 2012

In OSX 10.6, I can use "internet sharing" to set up a wireless network, connecting my wifi enabled music player (or Apple TV) to my MacBook Pro via wifi without actually connect my Macbook Pro to the Internet.  However with OSX 10.7 Lion, "internet sharing" requires actual connection to the Internet.  Is there a way to disable Lion's requirement?  All I need is to stream the music files in my Mac via wifi to my music player (Logitech Squeeze Box 3), and I don't always have access to the Internet.  Of course an Airport Express or any router would solve the problem, but that means one more device.

Or, is there any other method to set up a local wireless network without actual Internet access?  I tried "Creat Network...." in Airport but that doesn't work with passive music player (or Apple TV).  It seems only work with computer to computer networking.

ITunes :: Keep Asking To Allow/Accept Incoming Network Connections

May 17, 2012

This is my sis's Mac mini, running the latest Lion OS and latest iTunes version 10.6.1  Her mac mini is on our home Airport Wireless Network.

Whenever she launch iTunes, she gets this pop-up message:

Do you want the application "iTunes.app" to accept incoming nework connections Deny and Allow buttons.  Every single time have to click 'Allow' to continue.

Check the Firewall settings, it's on.  Inside Advance Settings the iTunes allow all incoming connections. This is not really annoying and disturbing, but have to allow almost every day when iTunes is launched.  The other way is to disable Firewall.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Unable To Access Network Disk

Jun 11, 2012

I have a USB disk attached to my Airport Extreme, and use it as the target of my time machine backups from my mac book pro (connected via WiFi).  For the most part things work fine.  But if my macbook goes to sleep, after it wakes up it often (not always) gets the next time machine backup to fail with a message saying that it cannot access the disk.  At first I found a brutal method of correcting it: I would disconnect from WiFi, go to my AE and power cycle it.  After it came back the macbook never had any problem with the disk.  A little more exploration indicated that Lion wasn't unmounting the disk properly.  The following works (but sometimes requires a few iterations): I'll go to finder, eject the disk, and disconnect from Airport Extreme, and then go to the terminal and do sudo diskutil unmountdisk disk1 (I first do a diskutil list to find out the right disk)

and then ask time machine to backup again.  Many times I have to repeat this a few more times before it "takes".  Has anyone else run into this?  It clearly looks like a bug in Lion, since it never happened until I upgraded.

PS. I understand that Apple says that they don't support time machine backup to network disks.  But they do to a time capsule!  It isn't really different.

Software :: Any Network Utility For Monitoring Incoming Connections?

Jun 4, 2009

I have someone monitoring my outgoing internet connections. That person sends pings, knows my logs and IP addresses I connect with, Skype is of his highest interest. Is there any way to protect myself from people monitoring what I do and what websites I visit? Or at least to know WHEN I am being watched? Is Network Utility of any help?

Is so, how to interpret it? I don't know much about MacBook, I was a Windows person till July. I had Tor, Privoxy and NetShield installed but it's a bit fussy and slows the connection. I have a MacBook with Intel 2.1 GHz processor, Leopard 10.5.6 OS and Safari 4 beta (552816). I use a wireless internet connection via a USB modem (Huawei E220). That person uses a PC with Windows XP.

Applications :: ITunes Asking To Accept Incoming Network Connections Every Time

May 27, 2010

Because I have Firewall enabled, everytime that I launch iTunes, I get a popup asking me: "Do you want the application "iTunes.app" to accept incoming network connections?" I click on "Allow." But unlike other applications where this process is only asked once, the first time you launch an app, I'm asked this every time.

I've talked with AppleCare about this, and the representative told me it may be because I've disabled "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library," because I prefer to organize my music folders my own way. She offered 2 work arounds:

1) Enable file sharing of my Music folder. It didn't work. The prompt still occurs every launch.

2) Reinstall iTunes. However, admittedly, she said this may not necessarily resolve the issue as it could simply be because I'm not using iTunes' file location by enabling "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library."

Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this? Also, if I reinstall iTunes, will I have to re-add my Library to iTunes or are the relevant database/album covers files & folders retained?--it took a few hours for a collection of my size to be added.

OS X :: Unable To Access Network Window / Network Settings Changed By Another Application

Dec 11, 2009

My neighbor has an IMac with OS 10.4.11 installed. When I open System Preferences and select the Network icon, the Network window comes up but it is overlayed with a message that states: "Your network settings have been changed by another application." When I click OK, this same overlaid window comes back.

The only way I can get out of System Preferences at this point is to do a Force Quit. In other words, because this overlaid window appears, I am unable to access the Network window to look at TCP/IP settings, make changes, etc.

Next I went into System/Library/Preference Panes/Network.prefPane(more info) to look at the application that appeared in the "Open with" field. It stated "System Preference." I replaced this with a new "System Preferences from the Applications Folder, but the same thing happened - even after I rebooted the computer.

Please let me know how to solve this problem so I can access the Network System Preferences properly.

Thank you.

ITunes :: Doesn't Wake External Drive With Library In Case If Remote Access

May 29, 2012

I have latest iTunes 10.6.1 and its library located on external drive, connected by FW800.

System properties -> Energy saver -> Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible is On  Everything works perfect in case of local access.

Also in case library's drive sleeps, it takes just several seconds more in order to wake drive. But remote access works only in case the drive is waked somehow. I.e. if Home Sharing is enabled and drive sleeps I cannot get access to the content from remote iTunes or Apple TV.

I think it is a bug, remote access shall be not broken in case the drive is sleeping. Also it is known, some forums explain that you shall never put external drives in sleep mode in case this drive used for iTunes Home Sharing [URL]

Hardware :: External HD, Apple TV, Wake On Wireles Include In Existing Wireless Network?

Oct 22, 2010

I have a new AppleTV set up in my entertainment center on the other side of my house from my office, where my MacBook Pro is. Currently I have my U-verse gateway(which has a wireless router built in) in my home theater. The AppleTV is wired into the gateway. The signal from the gateway does not reach my office so I was able to hack a linksys router into a repeater bridge (different SSID as my U-verse setup). This allows me to stream my iTunes library, which is stored on an external HD (1.5tb) connected to my Mac, to my Apple TV.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Applying Rules To Incoming Read Messages?

May 16, 2012

All of my email accounts are IMAP accounts. It seems like Mail won't automatically apply rules to new messages that appear in the inbox, if those messages were previously read on another device. It seems like Mail will only apply inbox rules to a new message if it comes in as "unread". For example, if I was reading some email messages in my iPhone's inbox, and then I come home and turn on my Mac and launch Mail, all of those messages show up for the VERY FIRST TIME in Mail's inbox. But none of the rules are applied to those messages, because I've previously read them somewhere else. This seems to be either a bug in Mail, or a poor design choice in Mail. Is there any way to FORCE Mail to apply rules to all incoming messages that appear in the inbox, regardless of whether or not they were previously read on another device?
