OS X V10.7 Lion :: IPhoto 9.3 Freezing MacBook - Rebooting (Infinite Loop)
Jun 22, 2012
I updated iphoto to 9.3 but never bothered to launch it until today. It asked me to upgrade the library. However, the process got stuff with a spinning beach ball and my mbp completely froze! When I cold booted it, it launched iphoto on its own and the whole process repeated. I had to reboot in safe mood in order to break it. In safe mode too iphoto library froze the machine.

Dusting off my old computer books and was wondering if anyone knows of an Infinite Loop that runs on OS X?
Interesting to see how this would tax the CPU or is there a better code out there now?

I got a 1 TB Western Digital external last night and had left it on all night so that Time Machine could back me up a few times. Then this morning, I had disconnected the drive and decided that I ought to update to 10.5.8 because Software update had told me to the day before. So I did, and I walked out of the room after it started installing the update. Then I walked back in when I first heard the startup chime and the fans were running at 6000 rpm and the screen showed the Apple and the daisy wheel. It proceeded to turn itself off, and repeat the process, always getting stuck at the Apple logo screen. So I tried booting it up in safe mode, but nothing changed; it never got past the apple screen. Then I booted from the install disc and used disk utility to verify the disk and repair the disk permissions. I tried starting it up a couple of times after that and nothing had changed. So I booted from the install disc again and was going to reinstall Leopard, but I decided to restore from one of the pre-10.5.8 Time Machine Backups.

I've had snow leopard for a few weeks now, and it's been unexpectedly slow for that duration of time, especially considering how much faster it's supposed to be.
Just for the record, I deleted all the Nikon software off my computer a few months ago. So I found jp.co.nikon.NikonPtpEnum, and deleted it. That didn't help. I then deleted any files I could find in my ~/library/preferences folder. That didn't help. I reinstalled some of the nikon software from the original instillation CD, and then used the uninstall software that comes with it to wipe my system. I even looked through all copies of any file entitled "com.apple.launchd" I could find, and looked for a reference to jp.co.nikon.NikonPtpEnum. Nothing. Any ideas? It's really slowing my system down, so I'd love to get rid of it.

My G3 keeps repeatedly rebooting. It goes through the loading process, but when it comes time to give you the desktop, it shuts down and restarts all over againl. As it boots up, a double image that you can't read comes up on the monitor, along with a solid color bar that separates the desktop image in two. I have two internal harddrives and changed it to reboot from the second harddrive, thinking that might be the problem. Immediately after doing this, it rebooted fine one time, but now is caught in the reboot loop again. When I startup from the install disk, the image is fine on the screen, as is the startup itself and when I run disk doctor, it says both drives are fine. I homeschool and would like to keep using all of the classic educational software on it for my 5 year old. It's running 9.2.2, 256mb memory 9gig drive is current booting drive, other one is 2gig.

Yesterday my wife's iMac froze and she tried powering off manually by holding the power button down on the back of the machine. Then she tried to boot it back up and got the welcome screen but she couldn't select an account to login to. Tries restarting again and gets a blank blue screen.Â
Call me out to take a look.Â
Not knowing much, I googled some help sites and performed the following:Â
SMC reset
PRAM reset
Verified disk permissions and repaired disk permissions
Boot from install disk (repaired permissions and verify disk)Â
Restarted and everything seemed to be working fine. Until this afternoon. She was in the middle of an upload and the computer restarted itself. She's in the middle of the upload again (almost finished). But when it's finished, I'd like to troubleshoot this some more.Â

As I was passing around a shop where they sold MBP's of all sizes, I tried them out. Amazingly, every single one of them seemed to freeze when I opened iPhoto, for not a short time. Am I not understanding something about it or is it just freezing?

I put in a samsung 500gb drive, and since yesterday this one is also doing strange. I was browsing the internet and it started launching itunes and going really slow although i wasn't doing anything, then it showed a force quit window telling me there was not enough memory on the startup disk for applications, althoug i still have roughly 340gb of free space. I just thought of restarting it maybe that solved the problem. But no, since then it doesn't startup in mac os x, bootcamp works fine with windows 7 installed. But starting snow leopard just gives me a grey screen like the safe boot screen with the progress bar and the spinning wheel. the progress bar dissapears after a while and the wheel etternaly spins.
Tried single user mode and fsck -fy but it only gives me some dislocations, it gets till the repairing Tree and then says that the volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired. Also tried to reset Pram but that neither. starting up with a bootable usb with the mac os x install dvd on it gives me the prohibitory sign after 2 minutes. I still have to try with my original disc, but that one is at home and I'm not gonna be there till next month.

Notebooks affected by this troubleshoot:Macbook Pro 15" 6,2 Mid 2010 (OS 10.7.3) with all Apple updates installed - 2,66Ghz Core i7 - Apple SSD 128GBMacbook Pro 15" Late 2011 (OS 10.7.2) - 2,4Ghz Core i7 - standard specs Troubleshoot : At startup, Lion freezes before the user is able to type his login/password. We see the login prompt interface of Lion, but can't even move mouse cursor.Keyboard's inactive too because system is frozen. So you must force a shutdown. And it's a loop-freezes. You'll try several times to boot your laptop before it will succeed to open. (it's a 5-times boot to succeed - average) I've tried several times: P-Ram reset, repair the permissions of Macintosh HD with latest Lion recovery & from an external boot too.None of this has solved this issue. I'm sure I'm not the only one who saw that issue. Have to boot 5 or 10 times his Macbook Pro to succeed a boot is not a normal use

my computer takes too much time to boot or reboot after switching to Lion, additionally I found out that there are duplications to the applications I am using so 2 Application Support folders and so on, means also wasting space of hd but probably long booting time is caused by that as well.Â
After searching a bit I found that this is a users issue, but since I am the only user I don't think this is necessary to have, so is it ok to delete and how the users option.

I'm running Lion on my 27 inch iMac, after rebooting everything runs good for a short while. Then for some reason when I try to open an application like iPhoto, or iTunes, or and external hard drive the system freezes up.I can still open up a browser such as Safari, or Firefox, but no applications not even the Finder. Yesterday, I ran a new Lion when rebooting my system but that didn't help. From the utilities I repaired the Mac drive.

ive had my macbookpro for about a year and a half at this point, and no real problems. i always upload photos from my canon digital SLR into iphoto, and today for some reason on one specific photo, the upload kept freezing. i rebooted, forced quit, etc. none of that worked. i deleted the photo and tried again- it only froze on the photo before the previous one. so i deleted the one after, thinking perhaps that was the problem. nope. so now im just short some pictures i actually liked and this thing is still freezing. ive read of options to upload to a folder then iphoto, but my camera does not show up as accessible hardware anywhere... so from what i can tell, i cant do that unless i go purchase card readers and the whole lot, but that seems ridiculous as this has worked for well over a year, and on my powerbook before this.

I recently set my Mac Mail preferences (using a me.com account) to send an "away message" to the senders of all incoming messages to my mail account. Little did I know the hassle this would create -- while I was away, there were problems with neverending back-and-forth away messages to various recipients where hundreds to thousands of e-mail messages were automatically exchanged back and forth from my account to the recipient that was also away or unable to receive messages. Then I really goofed up big time and sent myself an e-mail from the same away e-mail account, and I couldn't even stop it, there were so many messages upon messages it was just ridiculous. How can I avoid this problem in the future? Is there a simpler way to set an away message using Mac Mail and a me.com account?

My address book has suddenly gone haywire. It contains nothing 'on this mac' and seems to be stuck in a loop of downloading from iCloud - it gets a few contacts, then more, then yet more, then all, then back to just some and goes through the cycle all over again. Looking at the plist files in the library com.apple.addressbook.plist keeps vanishing and reappearing. I've tried quitting address Book, deleting the plist files (all of them) then reopening, but problem persists. I've tried turning off the iCloud sync for Address Book, whereupon it asks me if I want to keep a local copy: I say yes, but nothing is copied. Turn it on again, it syncs and starts looping all over again.Â

I have an iMac A1225 EMC2211 that is exhibiting some weird behaviour. After about 5 minutes of using it (cold boot) it will either have a kernel panic, freeze and go into a blue (bondi blue I think) screen, or shut down. I ran an extended AHT on it and after 10 minutes it shuts down (black screen) then goes into a boot loop (screen stays black and system chimes once every 2 seconds). If the system is warm it will not boot (goes to blank grey screen). The consol reports something with the NVRAM (havent had the ability to post the log yet).

I just literally updated my macbook pro to the latest version of Lion, today 4/3/12 and now it's just stuck on the main log in page for lion. As in, I type in my password, it thinks for two seconds, goes black, and has the log in page again. It just loops. No end in site. I've rebooted in safe mode, run disk utitily, and repaired the disk... but no dice, still. It repairs the disk, fine right? When I reboot in regular mode, it just goes back to the password/login screen loop.

I am currently using a mid-2009 13-in MacBook Pro with an upgraded hard drive (750 SATA disk). I had ZERO problems with the computer prior to or after the hard drive upgrade UNTIL I got Lion (currently have 10.7.3).
Now, not a day goes by when my computer doesn't freeze. If I try to open multiple web pages AND Word at the same time, the spinning wheel of death pops up. God forbid I even think of opening PhotoShop. I can usually get the Force Quit application to appear, but it never works, and ultimately my computer can only be made to work by shutting down and restarting.
As a grad student who uses my computer for research (usually involving multiple web pages, datasets in Excel, Word notes, and sometimes statistical software packages like Stata all running at the same time) this is very very frustrating.I'm tech-capable to a point, but I am not well-versed enough to know how to fix this on my own (or if there even IS a fix). I was a loyal Mac enthusiast until recently, but this has got me at my wit's end.

My cursor freezes, and I'm not sure how to fix it or why it's occuring. It sometimes freezes when I'm in Safari, but, alas, I can't now recall if that is the only time it freezes. I'm using the 10.7.3 operating system and the latest Safari.

I've had my Macbook (10.5.8) for over two years and have had no problems until recently. It's crashed twice in the past month, and before that (for a few months) it has been extremely slow. I've cleaned out everything I didn't need and placed most of my documents onto a external hard drive in hopes that this would speed things up - it has not. When the thing crashes it basically reboots itself with out any warning, losing my data. Both times this has happened I had photoshop and Acrobat 6.0 Professional open (I've been editing photos of texts of my research and turning them into pdf - some of these files are quite large (400 colored pages) ie. 600mb). The system usually crashes and reboots while I am editing an unsaved pdf in Acrobat.

There was a "click" heard most of the time when the screen when to black. I tried running the laptop with only AC, and then only battery.

I was using my Mac normally. I tried to open iTunes and got an error. I decided to restart the computer. Restarting was going normally, but at the stage of entering username and password, Mac tells me that my startup disk is full. I proceed, Mac recognises password and it gets me to the regular screen and mouse arrow appears. Nothing happens then. No icons, prgrams, nothing. I can't delete anything as I have no icons. What should I do? I tried rebooting few times but get the same thing.

I suddenly cannot access the several thousand photos in my iPhoto Library. I believe my computer must have automatically downloaded and upgraded the version I previously had. Now I get an error message that reads: The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete. I still need my images able to be read by previous versions since I go back and forth editing between older desktops. Is there a way to access the photo library without okaying the upgrade? If I reinstall an older version of iPhoto, will I lose the existing library of photos?
