MacBook Pro :: Not Booting - Getting Infinite Spinning Wheel
May 20, 2010
I put in a samsung 500gb drive, and since yesterday this one is also doing strange. I was browsing the internet and it started launching itunes and going really slow although i wasn't doing anything, then it showed a force quit window telling me there was not enough memory on the startup disk for applications, althoug i still have roughly 340gb of free space. I just thought of restarting it maybe that solved the problem. But no, since then it doesn't startup in mac os x, bootcamp works fine with windows 7 installed. But starting snow leopard just gives me a grey screen like the safe boot screen with the progress bar and the spinning wheel. the progress bar dissapears after a while and the wheel etternaly spins.
Tried single user mode and fsck -fy but it only gives me some dislocations, it gets till the repairing Tree and then says that the volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired. Also tried to reset Pram but that neither. starting up with a bootable usb with the mac os x install dvd on it gives me the prohibitory sign after 2 minutes. I still have to try with my original disc, but that one is at home and I'm not gonna be there till next month.

I'm currently using Win 7 on my partitioned drive since I can't get OS X to boot. Here's what I did to screw everything up: Installed SL awhile back without performing what people here are referring to as a "clean install" (I had lots of third party apps installed). Things seemed to be working fine, though Finder seemed to lag more in 10.6 than it did in 10.5. Today, however, I tried updating Parallels 4.0. It required that I reboot in order to finish the installation.
But, when the Apple logo appeared, that damned spinner just wouldn't stop. [Perhaps Parallels is "tainting" the kernel?] First, I tried reinstalling from the SL Install DVD. No luck there. I tried downgrading to 10.5 (archive and install). Still didn't boot. I even tried several volume repairs. Those didn't help either. So, now I've heard that some users are having luck booting in safe mode. But, if I try that, will I be able to transfer data to a backup drive?

My imac has just all of a sudden stopped working out of the blue. It was working fine yesterday and then just froze with the spinning wheel of death.
After a long long time it still was frozen so i held power button for 4 secs to power down.
PS: i am running snow leopard up to date on both macs.
I tried to power up and it has random start up issues.
1) It sometimes has the flashing folder with question mark and grey/white screen
2) It sometimes has the plain blue screen
3) It once out of the last 30 attempts to boot goes to the desktop and i noticed my wallpaper had been reset to default mac one. - Every move i made had the spinning wheel and i did not get past loading
Firefox and it froze again.
I have tried resetting the PRAM from boot disk but did not help. I ran Disk Utility from boot disk and repaired permissions and disk. No change in imac..
I have also tried pulling out one o the 4gig rams and booting and still the same problem so im guessing the ram is ok??
I have tried connecting imac to my macbook pro via 6 pin firewire cable and booing the imac into Target mode but the imac never appears on the macbook pro desktop to access files. The cd-rom appears showing the disk in the imac and i could eject it from the macbook pro. So looks like the target mode boot works, kind of..
I am running out of options and found out today my imac is not under warranty anymore.. !!!!! $%#%$#%
Any chance i have a virus of some sort?

I have a brand new macbook pro, and whenever I use itunes, iphoto or firefox. I get the spinning "wheel of doom" about every ten minutes. It only lasts about 30 seconds, but happens even when I only have one application open.

My computer stopped charging and turning on a short while after it was dropped.Â
I bought a new charger and my dad managed to fix it. (after i was told by a tech expert at a dodgy asian store the main processer had to be replaced)  The only issue im having are. The spinny wheel apears in almost all tasks, internet , browsing flies , clicking top tab.Â
It only appears for about 30 seconds then goes away, sometimes freezing completely, It seems to happen less when the computer is stationary but still will happen quite often even just typing text. Logic Pro after reinstalling refuses to Open. Music sometimes freezes skips for 5-10 seconds.Â
I did some research and try a few things its not the CPU usage cause i been checking using that program that checks. Is there a way i can check what part is failing through software or maybe do a general clean up? since it was reformated.Â
Do i need to get a new computer or just a replacement part if i eliminate all other issues? Or could it be the start up drive? Â

All of a sudden I was restarting my Air and now, it just has the spinning wheel for a few seconds and then goes blank and shuts down. I have tried everything the 'guide trouble shoots' but nothing has worked. Even was able to test the hard drive and it came back with no trouble. I tried to 'return to factory setting' but no luck and also tried resetting the Parameter RAM.

One day my computer just switched off for no reason. And when u tried to switch it back on it wouldn't pass the apple logo. It just stays on the apple logo with the spinning wheel under.I have tried fsck -fy it say my computer is ok .but then recently there is a losing bar that appeared under the spinning wheel. I have tried putting in the mac osx cd in and nothing happened but the cd won't come out anymore so now every time I switch the laptop it tries to start the cd.

So all of the sudden my mbp will not boot past the spinning wheel/apple screen. I have not let it try for longer than 15 minutes but I don't see the point. I tried to boot in safe mode(hold down shift) but the bar only went to about 1/3 and stopped/disappeared...so I don't know what to do. This shouldn't be happening after a couple months of light use.
Just for extra info:
I am able to boot into windows 7 via boot camp. Cannot boot from cd or go into safe mode.

The other day I went to restart my Macbook. It wouldn't so I had to force it via the off button. Now it boots but is stuck at desktop. I can't do ANYTHING but just look at the desktop background (which loads) and the spinning cursor. I reset PRAM and booted in Safe Mode but the same thing happens, it's just stuck on the desktop with no dock, no nothing but the spinning cursor. My disc drive is broken so can't do a reinstall right now and not sure if I could use an external disc drive. What I have tried: Resetting PRAM Going into single user and running a check- returns saying the volume is okay. When I typed reboot it didn't reboot. Exit brings me to the same desktop with spinning wheel.

A few months ago my 2004 iMac froze as I was simply shutting down the power and attempting to restart. I was not installing any new O/S.Today I attempted two things while booting with the O/S recovery disc-1: (a) I slid the disc in and held down the "C" key while I attempted to power it on. Nothing happened and I continued to see the grey screen and spinning wheel.Â
(b) I slid the disc inside and held down the "ALT" key while I attempted to power it on. Three icons showed up: (a) Hard Disk; (b) Recovery Disc; and (c) Test. I clicked on the Test icon and it took me to a new screen with two options: ( i ) Quick Test and ( ii ) Extended Test. I clicked on Quick Test. The first aspect of the Quick Test (I think it was Airport) went through fine and passed. The second aspect of the Quick Test (Logic Board testing) continued to show "In Progress" for a really long time (about 15 mins.). From that I figured something must have gone wrong with the Logic Board.

I rebooted my MacBook Pro (15", i7). When the system started back up, I got a status bar at the bottom of the screen. It took approx two minutes for the status bar to move to completion (almost like it was performing a BIOS update). I then got the gray spinning wheel (gray backdrop, darker gray Apple logo). I tried holding down the CMD and Option keys during a subsequent reboot....nothing changes.

it's an 15 inch macbook pro. since I bought this computer was working fine about last year. Somehow, start of this year, the problem begins. Everytime when i opened microsoft word 2011 on mac or Photoshop cs5, and quit the software as normaly. When i try to shut down the blue screen with spinning wheel apears. this spining wheel is endless. But funny thing is that after use other software such as games, web browser (safari) etc. and quit them. when i shut down there was not a problem. only word 2011 for mac and adobe photoshop cs5.

What does it mean when my 13" Macbook Pro pointer turns into a spinning color wheel after a web page loads, but freezes while this is happening? Every now and it does this for just a few seconds. At first I though maybe it lost my home Wifi signal, but it's showing 4 full bars.

I apologize for the long message but I want to be as detailed as possible. My MacBook (purchased early 2006, white 13", upgraded to Leopard about a year ago with no problems until now) will not boot past the grey screen and spinning wheel. Here' are the list of 6 steps I've followed so far and still is not working. Oh, and I do not have any peripherals attached to my MacBook:
1. Reboot in Safe Mode: tried pressing down the Shift key before the powering up sound AND after the sound. Could not get into Safe Mode. Did this several times, holding the Shift key for as much as a minute or two. Nothing but grey screen and spinning wheel.
2. Reset NVRAM/PRAM: CMD+R+P+Option: Computer restarted but still goes into Grey Screen, spinning wheel and stays there forever.
3. CMD +S: I read this online. Gave me a black screen with a lot of information, but I don't know how to read the computer jargon, let alone know what to do with said info. 4. Disk Utility Repair Disk : Inserted my Leopard install disk. Went to Utility Disk. Performed a Repair Disk and I did get two error messages, something related to id 70000452 should be id 70000450 ( I'm sorry to say I cannot remember the exact error messages). But it showed as repaired. When I did a 2nd Repair Disk, I got the message that the volume appears to be OK. Turned off and on again, nothing but grey screen and wheel.......
